  1. Okay,  some observations about THIS GAME:

    1. Gilmer should not have won this game.  When you are -2 in the turnover battle, blow a 14 point 4th quarter lead, and give up a touchdown in the final 30 seconds of the 1st half, you shouldn’t win.  Yet Gilmer found a way to win.

    2.  Sunnyvale had a good defensive game plan.  They played their linebackers and secondary so deep, they didn’t get caught up in the run of play.  Usually when Henderson breaks the 1st line of defense, he’s gone.  But the linebackers were deep enough to keep those plays contained.

    3.  That said, Henderson still broke 2 for TDs.  I’ve never seen anything like it in all my years of watching football.  He takes defensive angles and makes them meaningless.  There will be 2-3 kids who are in position to make a play, and he just blows right past them.

    4.  Gilmer offense was slow to make adjustments.  the quick pass to the receiver was open all night for a 6-8 yard gain.  And when they lined up 2 receivers on one side, the opposite side receiver was man up every time.  They almost never went that direction.  I don’t care if it’s Webb, Noble, or Tate, any of them would have won their one on one matchup.  But they rarely exploited it.

    5.  Defense.  Ugh.  They simply have not been able to hold a lead at anytime during this year.  And what is frustrating is they can play!  They made some huge stops at times in the game, but they simply cannot hold a lead.

    6.  My biggest criticism with the D is how they coach the corner backs.  You don’t need to track the receiver when you know he’s running fly route!  Get your eyes in the backfield!  Locate the football!  But Gilmer doesn’t ever seem to do that.

    7.  Take it for what it’s worth, but I heard a Gilmer kid say this was one of the toughest opponents they had faced.  I will say this for Sunnyvale.  I lot of teams would have thrown in the towel down 38-24.  But Sunnyvale played with the confidence of a team who thought they had a chance to win.

This wasn’t pretty, but the name of the game at this time of year is Survive and Advance.  As for “Gilmer’s not the same since Traylor left,” well, some day people will probably say that about Carthage & Surratt and Longview and King.  But consider this:  this is the 4th year for Metzel as HC.  The results so far:  lost in SC game year one.  Lost in SC game year two, only loss to eventual state champ Carthage in year 3, in the 3rd year of the playoffs in year 4.  A lot of programs haven’t seen that kind of success over any 4 year run in their school’s entire history.

Two of the 260-pounders are juniors, one of whom has already committed to Baylor. The other, who several DI schools have expressed interest in, is the only Bulldog playing both ways this year.

Only one player going both ways. Unbelievable.  To have that much depth at a 4A school. I bet a lot of 5A programs don’t have that depth.

I really think this is the key to developing great programs. Every team has 2-3 all stars. But how many teams develop all of the “other kids.”  Teams like Carthage and Aledo have been able to keep kids in the program and develop their talent. It’s why when one graduates, it’s a plug and play system.

  3. A few quick observations:

    1.  Gilmer offensive line really dominated the game tonight.  If you give Henderson a crease, it’s over.  But Smith had holes to run through also.  And the few times Gilmer passed, protection was good for the most part.  Really have to give the Oline a lot of credit.

    2.  Most impressive thing to me in the game was the 1st possession for Gilmer in the 2nd half.  75 yards, 6 minutes of clock, and a TD.  Gilmer can score at a lightning quick pace because of their speed.  But it was really nice to see them just impose their will on another team and methodically go down the field and chew up clock.

    3.  Gilmer’s defense is maddening.  They played the best quarter of football possibly all season in the 2nd quarter (which decided the game), but they couldn’t stop Center at all hardly after the half.  Yes they were probably rotating kids and putting in some 2nd stringers, but they gave up big play after big play.  Frustrating.  Gilmer has to keep their foot on the gas offensively because they can’t get defensive stops.  It just causes outrageously high scores and lengthens the came.  I couple of quality stops in the 2nd half and Gilmer could have burned more clock and played more kids on offense.

    4.  KICK THE BALL DEEP!!  Center’s average field position when Gilmer kicked it deep was 15-20 yards worse than the directional kicking.  But Gilmer still tried to directional kick.  It makes no sense.

Overall, a good win for Gilmer.  Praying for all the kids.  It was a wonderful gesture to hand the playoff trophy to G, but there is still a whole lot of grieving and a whole lot of healing needed in the community.

I have a question for Gilmer fans. There used to be a poster from Gilmer I think his name was An Old Buckeye. He would write a good long posts about Gilmer. Seemed pretty knowledgeable. I haven’t seen him post in like two years. Was wondering if he was still around or changed his screen name? Thanks

AOB is still alive. I see him at church.  But he gave up the Smoaky smack talk several years ago. He’s slowed down a lot these last few years.

  5. Defensively, Gilmer has made some adjustments. Probably the most important at outside linebacker, adding speed to the defense. Gilmer is also playing some of their offensive players on defense more, and that should help.   But it’s hard to tell how much the defensive “improvement” is due to playing better, or defensive adjustments, or just a drop off in the quality of the opponents the last 4 weeks. We shall see this Friday.

  6. I thought Pitt might wind up 3rd in district at the beginning of this year.  Sad to see what has happened to them. I simply cannot see them playing with much emotion in this game. And it’s senior night for the Gilmer kids. Best scenario:  get up big early, rest kids for the playoffs, and play backups the entire 2nd half

  7. Ok, some quick observations:

    1. I think Gilmer is making a quarterback change. Edmonds played every snap of the 1st half after Tennison fumbled a snap, and Tennison played a lot of defense in the first half after that. This might be a good thing. Getting an extra player on defense would certainly help.
    2. there is no substitute for speed. Henderson prove that the first half.
    3. Gilmer took a quarter to figure out the Spring Hill offense. But once they did, the defense looked pretty solid.
    4. That being said, the playoff road for Gilmer will be difficult.  Center will present problems due to their QB, and Van will be in tough game as well. Gilmer needed good defensive reps tonight.

congratulations to Spring Hill for playoffs. They certainly exceeded expectations this year.

  8. So, Pitt & LE are still winless in District play. North Lamar beat Pitt, and has PG and LE left. Pitt has LE & Gilmer left, and LE plays Pitt and North Lamar. Possible for all three teams to finish with only one district win. The road to a Carthage beat down seems quite interesting.

  9. Not a lot to say about this game. Gilmer defense struggled for an entire quarter to stop the wing T, but finally made adjustments. Offensively, Gilmer looked like a team with Yamboree hangover, but it didn’t matter against North Lamar.  Tennison was back at QB, which was good to see. But he will need to get in a lot of reps to find his rhythm.

This was really an uneventful game. Over before 10:00 (a rarity for Gilmer). nothing splashy. Looks like next week will be the battle for 2nd place in the district.

  10. Ok a few quick observations:

    1. I don’t know what has happened to LE. I thought they would be 3rd in district this year, and now I don’t know if they’ll even make the playoffs. Tough to watch a team that has always had talent look so bad.
    2. Most impressive Gilmer players tonight were #14 Smith and #22 Butler. Smith has clearly shown the last 3 games he is a capable backup for Henderson at RB. That’s good because Gilmer has always relied upon a thunder and lightning tandem at RB. But Butler was really impressive tonight. He had been playing cb, but he played inside tonight. Made a bunch of tackles, ran to the ball really well, and had the speed to run down players when they bounced to the outside. Hopefully that continues.

not much else to say. It was good to see Gilmer take care of business and put the game away in the first half.  First time that’s happened this year.

  11. A few quick observations:

    1) PG is really Good.  Big on O line and D line.  The QB isn’t a great QB, but he’s an Oustanding Athlete playing QB.  He throws it well enough to keep teams from loading the box, but he killed Gilmer with his feet.  PG / Carthage should be a really good matchup.

    2) Gilmer defense is just overmatched every game.  The D linemen are Big, but some of them haven’t grown into their size yet.  The corners too often never turn to locate the ball (a Gilmer issue for years).  But the biggest issue is at linebacker.  Gilmer’s linebackers are undersized, and they just don’t have the speed to contain anything on the outside.  It’s just rough.

    3) Gilmer didn’t even attempt to play any of their O linemen on the D line.  May have to rethink that.  May also need to look down to the JV to see if there is help at LB.

    4) Praying Tennison is OK.  I heard possible concussion.  Really appreciated PG players circling up and praying for him and Ovation PG fans gave to him while being taken off the field.  It’s always just terrifying when a player goes down and doesn’t get up.

Things will be tough for Gilmer going forward this year.  It’s hard to be competitive when the only way to win is a track meet.  People keep talking about a 4th round matchup with Carthage or PG again in the playoffs, but I’m not sure a deep playoff run is possible this year.

  12. I think Gilmer needs to really think outside the box to win this game.  Like on-side kick every time, going for it on 4th down every time, etc. Gilmer hasn’t played consistent defense yet. So I think their best chance at winning is to steal some possessions here and there.

  13. Kilgore list has to include ED “Extremely Dangerous” Jackson.

    Gilmer:

Justin Johnson, Red Jones, Kris Boyd come to mind.

Pine Tree:  Rodney Jones lead PT to the playoffs as a sophomore. I believe he was the leading rusher in the old District 13 5A for 3 years straight back in the 80’s.

but I’ll echo what others have said:  Dwight Smith was the best HS running back I ever saw.
