  1. Okay, for a few quick observations:

    1.  For all the Gilmer fans who left with Gilmer trailing 49-35, you missed a great last 6:00 minutes.  Honestly, I don't know why anyone would leave a Gilmer game early, as explosive as their offense is.

    2.  Gilmer still struggles mightily on defense.  A team with a big offensive line really gives them fits.  and Lindale had some BIG offensive lineman.  Give credit to the defense however for coming up with a huge stop with the game tied 49-49.

    3.  Gilmer's offense has 3-4 players who are serious playmakers.  Tate, Webb, and Noble are all explosive receivers, and Henderson has a gear most other players simply don't have.  It makes them very dangerous on offense.  But they have to clean up the holding penalties, especially the receivers.  Gilmer had a TD called back at the start of the 4th quarter that was crucial.

    4.  This feels like the reverse of the Kilgore game for Gilmer.  They had the lead and couldn't make the plays down the stretch when they needed to.  This time, Lindale had the lead and couldn't make the plays down the stretch.  You have to hand it to GIlmer, they are a resilient group.

    5.  There were a couple of Gilmer kids injured in this game.  At least 2 players were out by the end of the game, and one with his arm in a sling.  Hope it's nothing serious.   Gilmer is going to need all hands on deck this year from the looks of it.

    6.  Biggest takeaway from the game for Gilmer is rallying when down 14.  Special teams were a huge part of it.  A Beautiful onside kick (great 2nd bounce), and a great runback when tied 56-56, and then a clutch FG.  Big night for Gilmer Special teams.

I still don't know what to make of this Gilmer team.  There is a lot of talent, but the defense struggles mightily against the run.  I don't know if the coaches can fix it with schematics, or if they just don't have the size and strength on the D line this year.  But so far, the offense has shown it can run with anyone.  If the defense can come around, I think this will be a good team.

  2. Gilmer has a pretty big O line this year.  And of course, they’ve got 2 or 3 players that can take it to the house on any play.

To me the key will be how Gilmer handles the Kilgore loss.  It was a game I’m sure many of the players thought they had in the bag at 17-7, and thought they should have won. Emotionally, that can take a toll on a team.  If Gilmer is flat, I could see a scenario where things go south in a hurry.  But I could also see Gilmer going up to Paris and laying 50+ on them.  Time will tell.

  3. Okay, a few quick painful observations:

    1) This game should have been remembered for what it was:  a tough, hard nosed, defensive slugfest.  Gilmer recovers an onside kick with less than 2 minutes left and needs 1 first down to put the game away.  But they can’t do it.  Now, I’m all about imposing your will on another team.  Getting 4 yards a carry to put a game away is fine by me.  But Gilmer ran the same play 3 straight times and averaged 2 yards a carry.  So what do they do on 4th and 4?  Run the same straight play.  Who knows, maybe if they fake it to the RB and had the QB run, it ends the same way.  Maybe Kilgore D stops whatever Gilmer runs. But a first down ends the game at 17-14.  I just wish there had been something else tried.

    2) Tate didn’t play for Gilmer due to concussion, but it did give other Gilmer receivers a chance to step up.  Webb and Noble played absolutely great.  This will help Gilmer in the long run.

    3) I’ve never been a fan of the fake cramp.  A Kilgore player so OBVIOUSLY did it on the TD drive that put Kilgore ahead.  You could watch him running down the field, and as soon as the Kilgore receiver caught the ball inbounds, he falls to the ground grabbing his leg.  2 plays later, he’s back in the game.

    4) Both teams should have learned that they are more explosive than they thought.  When they opened up the passing game, both teams played better.

For Kilgore, this should be a HUGE confidence booster.  I’m not sure they can hang with Chapel Hill, but they know they can play with anyone, so it should be a great game.

For GIlmer, this could go either way.  They could be furious they lost a game they feel they could have one, and commit to working even harder.  Or, a loss like this could totally deflate them.  I think the coaching staff is going to really have to coach them up this week.

I think Tennison is a very good qb. It’s hard to look good when your receivers are covered like a blanket. Gilmer lost their big playmaker last year when Fluellen graduated. They don’t have any receiver close to his caliber this year.

I think the bigger problem Friday night was O line Play.  Tate can be a playmaker and Gilmer will always have some talent at the skill positions.  But too often Friday the CH D line was in his face really quickly.

His biggest challenge might be the standard of comparison.  Anyone who has had a big brother who was a superstar knows how hard it is to play in his shadows.

  5. Nobody in the district had anything to brag about after Thursday and Friday. LE, Pitt, Spring Hill, and Gilmer all lose, and PG scratched out a low scoring win. But unless Gilmer defense really improves, they are going to have to win Track Meet style:  just scoring as quickly and as much as they possibly can.  Don’t know if Kilgore is a team they can do that to.

Dang!  I thought the Gilmer / Chapel Hill game was high scoring!  But compared to this, that game was a defensive slugfest!

  7. Okay, a few quick Observations:

    1)  Before we announce the end of Gilmer, remember, Chapel Hill was a higher ranked team in a higher ranked division.  CH went to the state semifinals the last 2 years, and returned their starting QB and RB.  Maybe as Buckeyes we have unrealistic expectations at times, but a team in a higher classification that went deeper in the playoffs that returned more players probably should have been favored to beat Gilmer.

    2)  That saying, the Gilmer defense was bad.  Really Bad.  Really, really bad.  The Defensive line was dominated tonight by Chapel Hill.  Now it's too early to say whether that's because Chapel Hill has a really dominant offense or whether Gilmer has a really bad defense.  But outside of possibly Kilgore and PG, Gilmer won't see a team with that kind of offensive firepower again until the playoffs.  But Gilmer D line play must improve.  And tackling must improve.  There was a key play in the fourth quarter when the game was still a 1 possession game and Gilmer had C Hill in 2nd and 13.  The C Hill QB was stopped dead to rights in the back field, and Gilmer didn't wrap up.  That has to improve.

    3)  Offensively, Gilmer has the firepower to score at anytime, from anywhere on the field.  Tate and Henderson are game changing players.  And the Gilmer O line played okay on running plays.  All Gilmer backs had some success tonight.  When firing straight ahead, the Gilmer O line played great.  Their pass protection, however, was very lacking.  That will need to improve.

    4)  Gilmer QB had an off night tonight.  Granted, some time he didn't have a lot of time to throw, but he missed some reads, locked in on one receiver at times, and overthrew receivers on several attempts.  Maybe first game jitters.

    5)  As for Chapel Hill, their QB and RB are amazing.  Unbelievably talented.  Their defense gave up a LOT of big plays, but they have an offense that can make a long run.

    6)  Saw a 30 yard pass interference penalty tonight.  The officiating crew wasn't awful, but the Umpire was.  There were multiple times when he didn't know where to mark the ball are which direction to mark off a penalty.  But it was the first game of the year for them, so I'm sure they're trying to work out their mistakes as well.

So, it's the first game of the season.  Yes, Gilmer has a lot to work on.  But I wouldn't predict a losing season just yet.  If they can fix their defensive line problems, that would be the biggest improvement from game one.  But give them time.

  8. A lot of Gilmer vs Gladewater on here.  The battle of 271.  The G Town rivalry.  Orange and Black vs. Orange and Black.  And the 2014 game selling out and overflowing Lobo Stadium.

I understand why it, and Gilmer vs. Daingerfield have come to an end.  Enrollment disparity means teams will never be in the same district, and it probably doesn’t benefit the programs to have non district games either.  But all you had to do was watch the Gilmer / Gladewater scrimmage last week to realize the intensity of the rivalry is still alive and strong!

For Liberty Hill there are at least a dozen that come to mind where the masses didn't give them credit or much of a chance.  A few that jump out...

    - 2018 semi-final win over Carthage, 44-41.  Nobody gave Liberty Hill a second thought.

    - 2007 State championship over Gilmer, 38-13.  So much smack talk that week on Smokey from Gilmer fans and LH simply punched them in the mouth.

I was at the 2007 game.  Cold, cold, cold.  Wind blowing made it miserable.  And LH did punch Gilmer in the mouth.  One of the few times I saw a defense shut down the Gilmer offense.

  10. Gilmer vs Gladewater

    Controlled Scrimmage:

Gladewater,  TD drive, 3 & out, and either a TD drive or a fumble in the end zone recovered by Gilmer (refs never gave TD signal and it was GW’s last play)

Gilmer, TD drive, 3 & out, TD drive

    2nd Team Controlled scrimmage:

Gladewater:  TD Drive, Ran our of plays

    Gilmer:  3 & out, 3 & out, 3 & out.

    Live Quarter:

Will Henderson 70 yards to the house on the very first play.

Gladewater, 2 first downs and punt

Gilmer, 1 first down and punt

    Gladewater, 3 & out,

Then scrimmage ended with a fight that caused the refs to walk off the field with 5 minutes left to play.

(Long and short of the fight.  in the controlled scrimmage a GW player ripped the helmet off of a Gilmer player and then Threw it at him on the Gilmer TD.  Then with 5:30? Left in the quarter another Gilmer kid got his helmet pulled off and punched the GW player in Response.  So the GW / Gilmer Rivalry is clearly alive and well.  Both coaching staffs had the kids running across the field multiple times at the end of the game, so they clearly weren’t too happy.  I was surprised the refs walked off however.  They could have brought the kids together, given them a talking to, and finished up.  But I guess they were hot, tired, and didn’t want to mess with it in a scrimmage)

    As for observations:

Gladewater is quick, and fast at the skill positions.  But they are undersized, and don’t have many kids out (so depth will be an issue)

Gilmer is got tons of talent at the skill positions (again).  But Defense us undersized from last year, and Oline will need to improve.  Gilmer doesn’t seem to have a strong kicking game this year either it appears.

IT’S A SCRIMMAGE.  The best news for both teams is no one got injured.

  11. Most Gilmer fans will say the 2006 team.  But I believe if Luke Turner doesn’t break his ankle, Gilmer wins state in 2011.  He was the best and most important player on the field for Gilmer that season.  It’s a testament to the team and coaching staff they they could go all the way to the region 2 finals before losing to Argyle in a tough, close game.

  12. My final 4A D2 Rankings:

    1. Carthage

    2. Gilmer

    3. Glen Rose

    4. Pleasant Grove

    5. Wimberly

My reasoning for Gilmer over Glen Rose:

Football is all about matchups. The strength of the Glen Rose team was its offense.  The defense was good but not great. Carthage scored on every possession without a fumble or interception, and the Carthage offense pulled away from Glen Rose defenders in space. With the speed of the Gilmer skill possession players, I think Gilmer would have been able to score on them as well. Which means the key matchup of the game would have been the Gilmer defense Vs Glen Rose offense. And I think the Gilmer D line led by Ward would have made enough stops for Gilmer to win.

enough of my rant. Congratulations Carthage on championship #9. I would LOVE to see a Carthage / China Spring battle royal for all of 4A
