  1. There was a time when this game way 17-12. Gladewater kicked off, there was a late hit at the end of the play, tempers flared, a scrum started, and Coaches came on to the field to separate players (however, I still saw Gladewater players on the field.) Gladewater had to rekick because of an offsides on the kickoff. Before the kick, Coach Traylor called time out. He got the whole Gilmer team together on the field and had them take a knee. Emotions were running high, and he clearly told them not to respond to what was going on. Gilmer came back on the field and took over the game. Best time out I've seen this year. I really was disappointed with the sportsmanship of Gladewater. I'll probably get some criticism for that comment, but the last drive of the 1st half was totally uncalled for. A Gladewater player going after the Gilmer bench and stands, and a late hit that was incredibly late. They gave up a touchdown on that drive in large part because they took a cheap shot and gave Gilmer a 1st down. As far as Mr. Sells #75. Well, I did see him try in vain to catch Stump on a scramble and then get decleated as he ran back into a block. I also heard him make a tackle in the 3rd quarter after a 6 yard game, but that was about it. But I wouldn't have even been paying attention to him if it hadn't been for his comments on this sight, so I guess he got his 15 minutes of fame. Corey Davis is incredibly fast. Fastest player Gilmer has seen this year. When he got outside, he was gone. But outside of 2 plays, Gilmer did a great job of containing him. In fact, after Gladewater's 2nd touchdown and Coach Traylor's speech, Gilmer's defense really played lights out.
  2. There was a time when District 13 5A included Lufkin, Nac, JT, Tyler Lee, Marshall, Longview, PT, and THigh. I can't imagine what the Tuesday night bball game between THigh and Lufkin was like. Getting home at 2:00 am, probably. I think Texas High and MP have to stay in the district w/ the Longview / Marshall area schools, b/c there is just not other district geographically that makes sense.
  3. Based on last year, I would say the Kilgor Sophmores are better than the Kilgore Freshman. However, a lot of those sophmores are on varsity this year. Last year, Kilgore's freshman team was scary good.
  4. Remember, if someone comes to the door with a box of roses, run. Seriously, back on topic for this game. Spring Hill has always been a well discipline, hard nosed, competitive football team. Whether they are loaded with talent or not (and in the past they have had some talent), they are always a group of kids that hustles, plays hard, and gives total effort. I don't think they can beat Gilmer, but they will play with as much intensity as any team Gilmer plays. One thing I really love about high school football is Jr. high school football. If more people went on Thursday nights, they would understand what goes on on Friday nights. I've been watching Gilmer's 7th -9th graders every year on Thursdays for 5 years years. As 7th graders, they are running the spread offense. They are learning how to run that offense and defense from 7th grade on (maybe even from little league on). The JV team at Gilmer is undefeated this year. The 7th graders at Gilmer are undefeated (and look like they are loaded w/ talent). In other words, Gilmer is winning at the varsity level because they have their system in place from 7th grade on. If they make the playoffs, they can bring up those Freshmen and Sophmores and give them great exposure. They establish a culture of winning, effort, hard work, & commitment from the beginning. That translates to victories on Friday nights. I am still amazed at how often I see a 8th grade team or Freshman team on Thursday night that is not running the same offense their own varsity is running on Fridays. that doesn't happen at Gilmer.
  5. This is from an 8th grade game, but it's pretty crazy. Gilmer played Chapel Hill tonight, 8th grade. At the end of the 1st half, Chapel Hill completes a 45 yard pass and the kid is tackled at the 2 yard line as time expires. But there is a penalty (Horse collar tackle), so the ball is moved to the one yard line for an untimed down. Chapel Hill Score a TD. So the game moves to the 2nd half. Gilmer is trailing 32-24 with 5 seconds left. The clock runs out, but there is another penalty (False start, I think). So Gilmer has one untimed down. They hand off to the running back who goes 80 yards for a touchdown. The score has no bearing on the outcome of the game, Chapel Hill wins 32-30. But it's the first time at any level I have seen 2 untimed downs in a game, and both of them go for touchdowns.
  6. Haven't seen Jeffrey play, but it would be very hard to pick against Cooper from Arp or Chris Jones from Daingerfield. Not taking anything away form Jeffrey, but Jones and Cooper are unbelievably talented football players.
  7. Sometimes I don't understand the reasoning of the UIL. There is an 18 year old kid who is staying at the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission. He is homeless. Last year, he was enrolled in Hallsville until semester. He wasn't in school at all during the second semester. He is at Pine Tree this year (Hiway 80 Rescue Mission being 1/2 mile from PTHS). Now he wants to play football for Pine Tree. Of course, he is ineligible for the 1st six weeks. But at six weeks, he has passed all his courses. Is he eligible to play? No, the UIL has ruled he can't play. Now it's going to take this young man 1-1/2 to 2 years to finish school. He is going to school and passing all his classes while living in a shelter. He has been staying after school the entire year with the football team, looking forward to the opportunity to play basically for 1/2 a year. Now the UIL says he can't. How is this benificial to this student?
  8. I always take my kids on Thursday (least crowded day). Of course, I have daughters and they don't play football. If I had a kid playing football, he wouldn't see the square until Saturday. Now some kids have hogs, chickens, rabbits, cows, etc at the stockyards, so they are goint to be up at the Yamboree grounds before then. But most will stay away from the square. I bet most coaches do the same thing, even though I've seen Gilmer coaches on the square on Thursday. But again, it was with their kids, not players.
  9. The Yamboree thing is always a bigger deal for the 7th - 9th graders than for the varsity. The 7th & 8th grade teams can get really distracted by Yamboree week, but the varsity team will stay focused. I am curious to see how this disctrict plays out. I thought Spring Hill's victory really hurt Chapel Hill's chances for the playoffs, and When Gladewater almost beat Tatum, well that would have made things a mess. I want to watch Chapel Hill to see how they play. Gilmer should win, but what is going to happen to teams 2-3 in this district?
  10. Okay, back on topic with this post. I think this district will shake out: 1) Gilmer 2) Tatum 3) Chapel Hill I know most people had Gilmer going Div I this year, but I really don't see Bullard, Spring Hill, or Gladewater beating out Chapel Hill. The Chapel Hill / Spring Hill game should be a good indicator. I originally thought Gilmer's best bet would be to go Div. I. That way they miss Carthage, Mexia, and WOS. But if they go Div. II, they miss Navasota, and that might even be better. Region III is going to be hard to get out of, regardless.
  11. by no means am I a big shot. But there have been multiple posts here from Gilmer and Daingerfield fans who were at the game, and you are the only one who thinks this was a blowout. But you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But please, don't accuse An Old Buckeye, JakeBrake, and 98 Crush of knowing nothing about football. These are some of the most respected posters on this site, and they have provided me with hours of humor this week in their posts. To throw them under the bus and accuse them of knowing nothing about football is insulting to men who have been posting on this site long before either you or I have. If you want to think this is a blowout, go ahead. But do it in a manner that doesn't accuse other posters of ignorance.
  12. I don't know if L-E is better than Daingerfield or not. But this was a 22-6 game at half time and could easily have been 22-15. The game turned when D-field fumbled with a minute left in the half and Gilmer blocked a Daingerfield punt the 1st possession of the 2nd quarter. I don't call that dominating Daingerfield. I also really don't go for trash talking a team. As far as not knowing squat about football, my seat was in the press box. Where was yours?
  13. First of all, hats of to Daingerfield. They are an incredibly talented football team. If I was a college coach, I'd offer Edmund a scholarship today. And Boyd, Jones, & Smith are incredible athletes with incredible heart. I honestly don't see how a single program in 2A can compete with you guys this year. Secondly, this game was closer than the score indicated. Daingerfield turned the ball over at Gilmer's 5 with less than a minute left in the 1st half. Gilmer also held D-field on a possession early in the 3rd quarter when they had driven inside Gilmer's 20. A 22-15 score at half time would have made this a much closer game. Thirdly, Stump Godfrey is a great football player. He kept plays alive by scrambling and then hitting open receivers. He moved in the pocket well and ran well. Gilmer's offense wasn't clicking on all cylinders like it did against Kilgore, but as AOB said, that had more to do with Daingerfield's speed on defense. Finally, I don't know if Gilmer could have won a game like this 2 years ago. But Gilmer has a really good defense. They run to the ball, they don't give up on plays, they swarm tackle, and they get better in the red zone. This was a great game to watch. Gilmer won, and they should have, considering they are ranked #1 in 3A. But that takes nothing away from Daingerfield. They are a great football team, and they played with great heart.
  14. Now That's funny, I don't care who you are.
  15. Matt Camp is now home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Many prayers extended to his wife and son. I know his church family will be there to offer as much support as possible. But after just losing a sister-in-law to cancer, grieving is a process that will take a lot of time, love, and prayers. Sometimes we forget at time goes by just how much the family needs that encouragement and prayer support.
  16. born in 1970, deluded myself into thinking that I could give honest, non-biased observations.
  17. I am the son of two school teachers. My father was at Longview High School some 20 years ago when the shooting took place in the locker banks. I have subbed in schools in California that were more like war zones than schools. I have also watched as more and more has been demanded of schools and their teachers while less and less authority has been given to them. It is not, nor should it ever be, the responsibility of the school system to raise children. Schools have the responsibility of educating children. The responsibility of raising children rest upon the family. However, absentee parents, single parent homes, divorce, abuse, teen pregnancy, and the rest of the mess that is our society has totally destroyed the family. So school have been given the responsibility of raising children, something they were never intended to do. However, when a teacher truly wants to make an impact in a child's life, he can't. He's not allowed to pray with the child. He's not allowed to discipline the child (God forbid we paddle children!). The school can't teach values and principles to children. So we've told teachers, "This is all your responsibility, but you have no authority." Anyone who becomes a teacher today faces an unbelievable challenge. I cannot imagine anyone being a teacher without believing God has called them to teach. But can they share that sense of calling with the very kids God has called them to? Not legally. God have mercy on us.
  18. 2003 Gilmer loses to Atlanta (only loss of season), Atlanta wins state championship 2004 Gilmer wins state championship 2006 Gilmer loses to Liberty Eylau (only loss of season), L-E wins state championship 2007 Gilmer loses to Defending State Champ Liberty Hill in state championship game (only loss of season) 2008 Gilmer loses to Carthage and the Beast that is Dwight Smith, Carthage wins the state championship. Gilmer has won the state championship only once, but four out of the last six years, the team that beat Gilmer in the playoffs wound up winning the state championship. That's not bad.
  19. I'm hoping everyone in the Smoaky nation will please pray for Matt Camp. Matt has for years been the play by play man for the Gilmer Buckeyes internet broadcast, which is his connection to this site. But anyone who knows Matt knows he is much more than the voice of the Buckeyes. Matt is one of the nicest men in most devout Christians I have ever met. Matt has for the last few years been dealing with Cancer. He has spent months in Houston at M.D. Anderson and more recently at the Cancer Center in Tulsa. Now, Matt is being sent home, as the doctors are telling him there is no more they can do. I know that every breath any of us breathe is a gift from God, and only He knows the number of our days. I also know that for all of us who trust Christ, to live is Christ and to die is gain. I'm asking for prayers that God would do a work in his life. Matt is a Christian witness to everyone he meets (he ends every Gilmer broadcast with "remember God loves you and so do we"). Right now, he and his family are in real need of your prayers.
  20. What do I tell my wife when I get fired for lack of productivity this week? Gilmer 140 Daingerfield 2 Gilmer scores on it's 1st 20 possessions, kicking and recovering 8 onsides kicks. Then, with 4 seconds left in the game, the 7th string quarterback takes a knee in the end zone so Gilmer cannot be accused of running up the score. Seriously. if Gilmer plays like they did Friday night, Gilmer wins. Period. If Gilmer turns the ball over, Daingerfield has a legitimate chance. I KNOW nobody in Gilmer is going to underestimate Dfield. AOB, I'm laughing myself out of my chair at your posts, but I'm blaming you if I lose my job.
  21. All right, Gilmer won, Daingerfield won. Seven days to blow this post up. It is so on.
  22. This was the best I've ever seen Stump Godfrey play. His deep passes were perfect throws, hit receivers right in stride. In the 1st half he was 15 of 18, and one of those was just dropped. Gilmer scored on their first 10 possessions. Receivers caught everything. Holt, Franklin, and Griffith all had huge games. I was surprised that Godfrey stayed in as long as he did, but Gilmer was running 2nd and 3rd string receivers, linemen, and running backs. Gilmer can play about 4 different kids at running back, but Vance Green is definitely the best of them. Their receivers are also largely interchangeable. I thought Kilgore would try to run the ball and control the clock, but Gilmer's D totally dominated the line of scrimmage. This was a LOOONNNNG game. 1st half lasted forever, and I think most other games were ending about time this game started the 3rd quarter (even half time ran long!) If Godfrey plays like this the rest of the season, Gilmer will be really tough to beat.
  23. Gilmer 9th / JV B team played Lindale 9 / JV. Score 6-6. Gilmer 8th B team vs. Kilgore 8th B team (Controlled Scrimmage) Gilmer won 2-0. In Gilmer 8th grade A vs. Kilgore 8th A Gilmer won 28-0.
  24. Don't understand why John Tyler isn't getting more love. I think they could be a very dangerous team this year. In 3A, I think Navasota could probably be ranked higher. Region III is just scary tough.
