Give me Sunnyvale in an upset! Gilmer, you're way too cocky and arrogant, and you're taking this team way too lightly! You're already looking ahead to the third and fourth rounds, and you've already claimed a victory over a team you haven't even played yet! I hope Sunnyvale beats ya'll this week! Good Lord, show some class!

Ain't nobody in their right mind overlooking Sunnyvale, especially coaches and players.  "Some" fans might act that way, but most of these people talking past this game are from other fan bases.  I can't wait to meet Spring Hill again this year.............., oh, wait!  Spring Hill people have a lot of gawl talking about "class".

Yeah PG is good I watched them play Gilmer this year. I just don’t think they will match up well against Carthage. The thing I want to know is how did Gilmers defense play such a great game against Kilgore this year and then just fall out? They looked great against Kilgore. What happened to that team?

Things that make you go hunh......  Most Buckeye fans are wondering the same thing.

PG playing their QB and D line and O line both ways will not work against the Dawgs. 72, 54, and 70 will push those PG 190 pound tackles into the back field all night long. The Dawg linebackers are bigger than some of their O linemen.
Do I think PG have a chance yes if the Dawgs make mistakes such as 15 yard penalties or turnovers.

You definitely have a point there.  Games are decided in the trenches, and I think Carthage has a definite advantage there.  The Dawgs will likely wear them down just like they do nearly everybody else they play.  How does Carthage always have four to five 6'4" 300 pounders every year on their OL and DL?  Where do they come from?  What the heck are they feeding them fellers down there?

I think they definitely have a shot at winning.  They are ranked #3 by Dave Campbell, so they have to be considered as a potential state champion.  That's why you play the game!

Beating a perennial power like Carthage is a tough task to begin with.  Has PG ever beaten Carthage?  I know they haven't anytime recently.  That would be a signature win for their program if they can pull it off.

Gilmer should win out until the fourth round unless something weird happens then they get smashed by Carthage.

I wouldn't be too sure about it being Carthage in the 4th round, provided we make it there.  Pleasant Grove is the real deal this year.  If they can get past that mental hurdle I think they have a legit shot at the win.

The guy doing the interview said something to the effect of - P G and Carthage have improved but Gilmer has improved a lot more….he likes Gilmer’s chances whoever they play in round 4.

Do you have a link to this "homer", or "football guru", saying a silly thing like this, or is it just hearsay.  Provide the link.  I'd like to know who this guy is.  To be honest, our defense has to have improved because we were absolutely terrible for the first six weeks.  There was absolutely no way but up as far as defense goes.  That's the only reason I can think of where someone might think something like that.  Center is the only team we're focused on right now, and they will definitely test us.  I have no idea how our game will go with them.  I'm hoping we have put the right people in the right places to get stops on a regular basis.  We will just have to wait and see.

And, also, any well coached team will improve more and more as the season progresses, barring injuries and such, and it's silly to think otherwise.  The amount of improvement is definitely subjective.

According to the FB interview I watched today, this region is locked up……Gilmer is now better than PG and Carthage.

You're just stirring the pot.  Give a link or I don't think you're being truthful.  Ain't nobody in their right mind would say something like this.  Gilmer has improved but they are not up to that level yet.  Somebody was drunk..., lol.

  8. All I am going to say is PG is a very good team, obviously.  I do hope that Carthage smokes them in the playoffs.  That would make me extremely happy.  Carthage is probably the only team in our region that can give them a game, and possibly beat them, in my opinion.

    Carthage for #9, please!

No he is not right, The Dawgs have held some opponents to minus rushing yards in the first half. By the time the playoffs get here you will see a Preston defense fine tuned and rolling.

The sad part, as a Buckeye fan, is you're right.  I think Coach Preston is the best defensive coach in the area, if not the whole state at any level.  Carthage will only get better the more games they play. Other teams usually get better, too, but the difference is in the starting point.  If anybody is to beat Carthage, they will have to have an equally good defense, and an explosive offense.  It's in the trenches where Carthage almost always wins.  If you win in the trenches, you win the game.

I'm pretty certain that Carthage will face both these teams.  In what round depends on what happens tonight, in my opinion.

  10. Heck, I'm just praying the coaching staff finds a way to get players in a position to get stops.  No arm tackling, and it will take lots of players flying toward the ball carrier to get the stops we will need to win.  If we can force PG to play at our pace we have a solid chance at beating them.  If we play at PG's pace we will have to score on every possession.  PG normally "hawks" the ball, taking the air out of it, so their pace can keep our offense from getting into a rhythm.  The thing that bothers me tremendously is we are susceptible defensively to the RPO type of offense, and that is PG in a nutshell.

I just don't understand how one year would make this extreme of a difference in our defense.  Losing six starters definitely doesn't help, but I know we have the talent.

The good news is that we make up for our shortcomings by being younger, smaller, slower, can't fight off blocks, miss gap assignments, and can't get penetration.  Good news....., for PG that is.

It's hard to tell right now, but we do seem to be getting better.  Whether it will be enough yet is up in the air at this point.

Do I think we can beat PG?  Absolutely.  We will really have to be disciplined and fired up in all phases of the game.  Being a homer, I will take Gilmer for the win, 36-28.

I know us fans our spoiled, but as a fan myself (not a "fair weather fan") we have a right to point out the obvious.  Our defense has been terrible.  Yes, we have played a tough schedule and we are 3-2, and just as easily could be 4-1.  As it stands, though, it doesn't look like we are improving.  That's not typical of former Buckeye teams.  That's got to change somehow.  Somebody definitely has to be held accountable whether it be players, or coaches.  I'm not pointing fingers when I say that, and neither is anybody else I don't believe.  Our defense has GOT to get better, period.  If it stays the way it is, an inordinate amount of pressure will be on the offense to score every (or nearly every) possession.  We won't be able to do that against the better defenses out there.  I just hope we get it figured out quickly enough to beat our next opponent, Pleasant Grove.  That game will more than likely decide the district championship.  That should be, and is, the overall focal point right now.

Just to follow up, teams that run the RPO seem to be our achilles heel, and that is the offense we will be facing most.  If a QB can run at all, we have way too much trouble with it defensively.  We have to have players at least in a position to make a play.

Sorry I didn’t remember your quote from 2006.  Thanks for reminding me.

I wasn't on these forums at that time, but it's true.  I wasn't buying in to the hype of their number 1 ranking that season.  As God is my witness, I told a buddy of mine after the Daingerfield game in which we won 62-42, that if anybody holds this offensive juggernaut under 40 they will likely beat us.    That team was terrible defensively against any decent team with a pulse.  My brother (may he rest in peace) and I were discussing this exact thing on the way to the game, and I said it again to him.  We were seriously worried about L-E, even with them coming in with a 7-3 record, I believe.  It turns out that first round game was determining the state champion, in my opinion.

Why do you think most people say that the visiting team is down 7 points at Gilmer when they get off the bus?

I can understand that from the Jeff Traylor days, but it hasn't really been that way since.  The only way a visiting team is already down 7, as you say, is because winning there is hard to do, and visiting teams know it.  Gilmer is always a tough team to beat even when they're down.

I expect some adjustments this week that might slow Lindale down, and I expect the Buckeyes to find an offensive rhythm.  If they can do these two things, and not turn the ball over, I expect the Buckeyes to win.  If not, it's a toss up.

Times are changing for sure.  Never seen a quote like this from a Gilmer fan.

I said the same thing in 2006 when Gilmer was ranked number 1 all season.  L-E held them to 36 points, and therefore got the win in the first round of the playoffs.

I haven’t see Gilmer play and have heard it’s not your typical Gilmer team.  But with our defense giving up 43 pts a game, I have to go Gilmer here. Yes, team showed improvement last week. Without a doubt. But with this being a Gilmer home game, slight edge to Gilmer. Let’s call it 45-42.

LOL!  Gilmer has been giving up 45 points a game on average, and it could be higher than that, albeit to a couple of very good teams, and one not so good.  The Buckeye defense took a step back against Paris, and the offense never really found its rhythm, even though they scored 43 points.  I know nothing about Lindale, but if they have a good quarterback who can scramble, and/or who can get the ball out quickly, they have a very good chance at beating Gilmer at home.

With neither defense being up to their usual standards, this should be a high scoring game.  I think a really high scoring game, say over 40 per team, favors Lindale.  If Gilmer can hold Lindale under 40 points, I think the Buckeyes win.

Wasn’t talking about officiating.  Was taking about clock operations.  Don’t say that doesn’t favor the Buckeyes at home.  I’ve seen it too many times.

I been to almost every home game for 20+ years, and I don't remember the clock ever being operated improperly or favorably for the home team, on purpose anyway.  Besides, that would be on the officiating.  We can agree to disagree on this one.

  18. 18 hours ago, PantherNation2015 said:

And Gilmer doesn’t get the same benefit playing at home?  😂 You can’t apply rational thinking to irrational people.

Actually, no.  Gilmer definitely doesn't get the benefit of the doubt at home anymore, and haven't since Jeff left.  The same officiating crew did the Chapel Hill game, and they had no idea what they were doing in that one.

It really doesn't matter.  Not saying it did or didn't, but it should never come down to officiating to begin with.  The Gilmer coaching staff made some mistakes, and those likely cost the Buckeyes this game.  You "dance with what brung you", and I absolutely hate "prevent defense" because all that does is prevent you from winning.  Another head scratcher was getting away from the game plan in the last 2 minutes.  One first down would've locked the game had we been just a little more inventive.

It is what it is, though, and Kilgore did what they had to do to win.  Congrats to the Bulldogs.

  19. Gilmer's schedule is definitely no cakewalk:

    Chapel Hill (home)

    Kilgore (there)

    Paris (there)

    Lindale (home)

Prosper Walnut Grove (home) - This was a fill-in for an open week.  I know nothing about this school's size or its football team, except that they play Gunter, Celina, Palestine, Gilmer, and Anna in pre-district.  WG will definitely be tested.

I didnt see them but I bet the 1984 Daingerfield team is up there

I think they were a little overconfident going into the title game that year, JMO.  I was telling my brother while listening to that game on the radio, that if Daingerfield won it, they would lose in the title game, but if Gladewater won it, they would win state.  We will never know about the latter, but that was, and still is, my opinion.
