I remember when only 1 team went, and penetrations was how they determined a tie. No overtime

Don't remind Gladewater fans of those tie games where penetrations or first downs determined the winner.  I remember 1984 vividly.  I always told people that '84 Bear team would've won a title had they gotten by Daingerfield that year.  I think that was definitely the closest they came to a title.  I think it was the best team they've ever had in my lifetime, although you could make an argument about the 2014 team.

  2. Gilmer Buckeyes 2022 Football Schedule

    Scrimmage 1 Gladewater
    Scrimmage 2: Pine Tree
    Week 1: Chapel Hill
    Week 2: Kilgore
    Week 3: Paris
    Week 4: Lindale
    Week 5: To Be Announced
    Week 6: Open
    Week 7: Pleasant Grove
    Week 8: Liberty Eylau
    Week 9: North Lamar
    Week 10: Spring Hill
    Week 11: Pittsburg

We're still looking for a Week 5 opponent.

  3. Folks, I guess I will chime in and give my thoughts on this game.  China Spring is obviously the real deal this season.  We will have to be on top of our game in all aspects to win this one.  We can't keep making the same mistakes we have been and expect to win against a team the caliber of China Spring.  Do I think we can win?  Absolutely!  We will need to get quite a few stops defensively, and find a rhythm early on offense.  Without silly penalties and turnovers, and we do the aforementioned, we will win.  Otherwise, CS will make it extremely tough for us to accomplish our goal.  I'm hoping for our best outing of the year, and that's likely what it will take.  Will the Buckeyes rise up?  We will see.

  4. I've mulled over cutting the cord many times over the years because I prefer HD over just digital, but I keep going back to what our local cable company offers.  I get the HD package and we have always had both Bally Sports (formerly Fox Sports Southwest), although the alternate channel is not HD, so I get to watch all the teams I have interest in, i.e. the Mavericks, Stars, Rangers, and high school football.  We also get the NFL channel..., they even piped in a Cowboy game one year when it was blacked out locally.  The only network we don't get is NBC, which I don't sweat it because I have peacock.

  5. "Third time's a charm" is what Duncanville is hoping for in this matchup.  Psychologically, NS has a definite advantage.  I think that if Duncanville can get a two score lead going into the 4th quarter, they will win for sure.  The biggest hurdle for D'Ville is psychological.  Talent wise I think these teams match up very well.  My brain says NS, but my heart says D'Ville.

  6. Let's go Buckeyes!  You are being challenged.  The Black Flag Defense needs to show up big time in this one, and our offense needs to find a rhythm early.  Are you ready?  Dem Celina boys be saying theys gonna take you to da woodshed.

I absolutely know the Buckeyes can and "should" win this game.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to watch it in person.  I have to work.  Win this one and I will most certainly be in Jerry's world, Lord willing.  I just want to see the Buckeyes playing in person one more time.

Follow the $. How many Dave Campbell subscriptions do you think they sell in Upshur County, as opposed to that $$$$$ Area in the Metroplex?

Dave Campbell, the UIL, they are ALL the “New NCAA”. How much money are they making off of high school kids!?!?!

Watch the film. Coaches have. And you don’t have to be a coach to see what you see.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion.  I don't think Matt has an ulterior motive at all.  I don't think he's that kind of person.  If he thinks Celina is "better" than Gilmer it is our job to prove him wrong.  Celina comes out of a weak region for sure, but they did what they were supposed to do, and that is blow everybody out.  We will definitely be the best team they have faced since Argyle.  It's always tough to gauge teams from different regions, but historically region 1 hasn't had a lot of success against region 2.  I do think this will be a good game, and I think it will be up to our players how well we play.  They will have to play with fire in their belly, so to speak, and a lot of discipline.  Celina is the first serious threat to our team's goal.  Will we rise up?  We will see.

  8. I saw last night where Celina is now a 10-point favorite in this game according to Dave Campbell's.  The Bobcats must be for real this year for sure.  The Buckeyes better bring their A-GAME to this matchup.  We better set the tone early and maintain it throughout.  Finding an offensive rhythm early, and staying in rhythm is a must.  We better get SEVERAL defensive stops, too.  For me, it's hard to believe we are the underdog going into this game.  It is what it is, and we better be UP for the challenge.

😂😂😂can’t speak for all of the teachers but definitely know this one is and if you think that the players having negative thoughts is helping then your welcome.

If they think like that, then yes, they will definitely get beat again.  Absolutely can't go into any game against a quality opponent, much less Carthage, thinking that way.  You won't just get beat, you will get humiliated.  That's why I've been saying that Carthage has gotten into the Buckeyes' heads too much.  Tell them kids to relax, and play ball.  Their good enough to compete with anybody, and yes, even Carthage.... if they have the right frame of mind going in.

That's the way I see it.

  10. Personally, I would be shocked if China Spring beats Carthage.  I keep going through it over and over in my head, and I just can't wrap my head around a scenario where that happens.  Preston's defense is for real.  It will be a monumental task just to have any kind of consistency moving the ball against them.  I'm not saying it "can't" happen.  It's just a daunting challenge for sure.

Offensively, if the Dawgs are playing consistently without turnovers, they will hog the ball and score several times.  Usually, that's all it takes for them to win.  It will likely take at least 28 points offensively to stay in the game, and that's something no other team has been able to do.  I don't see it happening Friday either.

I've been wrong before, for sure.  At least there's that.🤔

seems like this topic comes up constantly.  can't imagine him making a big change with his family just as his son gets to high school.  he will have infinite opportunities at the time of his choosing.

Agreed.  I don't think he will leave until his son graduates.  I've always believed that, and have said so a few times before.

I hear what you are saying and understand the rationale. But the same thing was said last year when it came time for the state title game and also this year when they played in non district. “This isn’t the same Gilmer team. Gilmer has gotten so much better. Gilmer has closed the gap.” Then 70-14 happened in the title game and this year Gilmer was nearly shut out. They had one great play that was a desperate scramble to get off a pass and a fantastic catch by the receiver to score.

Carthage has also gotten better and if they meet again I don’t think it will be 70-14, because that’s not the profile of this years Carthage, but I think it won’t be any closer than the game earlier this year. But Honcho could absolutely be wrong, we shall see.

Yep, I can't argue that.  Gilmer has to actually PROVE they can play with Carthage before even the majority of their own fans will agree with that rationale.  Both teams have improved since the first meeting.  The thing is, the Dawgs have gotten into the Buckeyes head space, and shaking that is hard to do.  You certainly can't play "scared" on offense against anybody, especially the Dawg defense.  You have to relax and do what you do best.  Any team left will absolutely have to play their very best football for a FULL 4 QUARTERS to have a chance at beating Carthage.  You can't just go out there and punch them in the mouth, and lay down.  You have to get back up and keep punching because you know Carthage will.

I just hope Gilmer has that opportunity.  There's too many good teams still trying to get to Jerry's world to overlook anybody.  Our players minds better be on Van this week for sure.  If not, we might not get there.

  13. I heard someone say that Gilmer set a record in this game for penalties and penalty yards, over 250 yards in penalties I think.  Nothing stopped the Buckeyes but themselves.  Cudos to Caddo Mills.  They made some great plays.  We definitely can't play that way again for the rest of the playoffs or our goals will not be realized.  Every team that is left is a good team and very capable of beating us if we continue without discipline.

The Buckeyes remind me of box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

  14. The Buckeyes "should" win this one comfortably, but they can't afford to take any team lightly.  Lowly Mexia moved the ball on us way too easily, although they only scored twice.  I know some of our defensive starters had limited playing time against Mexia, and a lot of that yardage given up can be attributed to some of the subs.  To their credit, they didn't break but twice all game.  Caddo Mills has a better team on both sides of the ball than Mexia, so we need to stay focused.  I would absolutely LOVE to see us play a complete game on a weekly basis.  The competition gets better and better the further into the playoffs we get.

Hey bear crawling a 100 plus yards and running them until you find out what they ate for lunch use to work miracles lol. Need to get back that old school discipline

That ain't no joke.  I'm not sure how the coaches are punishing these kids, or even if they are, but whatever the punishment is it's NOT WORKING.  It's the same players time and time again for the most part.  I was speaking more about during the game when the offense takes place.  Bench them, then make them pay for it in practice.  I don't care how good of a player they are.

  16. Discipline does seem to be an ongoing problem for the Buckeyes.  Way too many unsportsmanlike penalties, which can kill drives offensively and extend drives defensively.  That's one thing that needs to improve for sure, especially against stiffer competition.  Those kind of penalties should not be happening this late in the season for sure.  It should've been nipped in the bud early in the season when the games were not going to count except on their won/loss record.  I would've made a player ride the bench for a series or two for a first offense, and progressively stiffened the discipline upon each seceding penalty.

First of all......the assumption is that Gilmer is the definitive winner of this game, and that has not yet been established.  Although Glimer is favored, it's not like PG is not a formidable opponent......esp. this late in the season when they have been winning convincingly the last several weeks.  But just because.......I voted NO!!

Oh, and I did, too.  He ain't from Gilmer.  He's just trying to stir the pot.

  18. Heck, I would be happy with a one point win.  A win is a win.  Even I wouldn't place any bets on a score between these two teams.  This game will probably be close just like last year, just my humble opinion.  I would love to see us beat them comfortably, but I don't really see that happening unless we are firing on all cylinders in all phases of the game.  PG has gotten better as the season has gone along just like well coached teams do.
