  1. Dalton Santos' stats for the season: 75 Tackles (11 for loss) 4 sacks 1 Int. 1 Forced Fumble He is a Soph. and has worked really hard. Alexander is probably the best pound for pound DL in the area. 6'3" 225 lbs. Has 85 tackles (32 for loss), 20 sacks and forced 2 fumbles. Faces double and triple teams all the time. Great kid too.
  2. Why would Shead go to UT? Maybe because it is UT. Many players have gone to a school because they have always dreamed of, or wanted to play there. G.J. Kinne and Jevan Snead both left UT because they knew they would not play sitting behind Colt. Justin Johnson, who was an All-American at Gilmer, left OU, and is now doing great at ACU, and I am happy for him. Snead (Ole Miss) and Kinne (Tulsa) are now starting for their respective schools (or at least were up to a couple of weeks ago). I have a buddy that coaches in Cayuga. I know he is a great kid, so lets just stop trying to make that point. Nobody is disputing this. I saw him in the playoffs a couple of times his Soph. year. The game that stood out in my mind was against Maud. They had 3 D1 players on their D-Line, and he far from dominated that game. Now, I realize that was 2 years ago, but he will face that kind of talent everyday as soon as he steps foot on campus. He, just like every other player, will have to make the adjustment to the speed of the college game. He will be facing LB's and Safeties that are as big (if not bigger), and just as fast as he is. It will take him some time to adjust to the college game. Even the great AD did not start the first time he stepped on the field at OU. Shead will get his chance to play. When, and at what position, will determined at a later date. Taller RB's are not the norm, no matter what their abilities are. They present a big target for defenses. Eddie George was the last great tall (6'3" or taller) RB to excel at the College Level (won the Heisman). Even Chris Chiles switched to WR this year to get on the field. He is still the back-up to Colt, but he wanted to get on the field. That is why at some point he could switch, or be switched to another position. With his size, speed, and athletic ability, he would look great at WR, and probably be more attractive to pro scouts at that position. But again, all that will be determined at a later date. Let's let him enjoy his senior season, as he and his teammates try to get back to the state title game, and bring home some hardware. Oh, and back to the original topic. I am a little biased, but having coached Calhoun his last 2 years, I feel that Calhoun is better. I feel the competition you face in high school does make a difference. Plus, I saw this guys work ethic, and it was emaculate. Great leader, teammate, person. I know Shead has all the same characteristics as well. Like I said, a buddy of mine coaches over there, and we talk about how things are going. Calhoun and Shead will have there chances to show what they both can do at the college level over the next few years. Then, who knows what can happen. You can definitely not go wrong with either kid. Go Vandals, and go 'Yuga.
  3. Current Standings: Van 2-0 Wills Point 2-0 Eustace 2-0 Canton 0-2 Mineola 0-2 Kemp 0-2 Week 3 matchups: Van @ Wills Point (Winner could wrap up a playoff spot with a win, depending on what else happens) Eustace vs. Kemp (Eustace could wrap up a playoff spot with a win, depending on what else happens) Canton vs. Mineola (Winner keeps hopes alive, loser is all but done) Week 4 Matchups: Canton @ Van (Senior night, big rivalry game, throw out the records). Wills Point vs. Eustace (Could decide District title) Mineola vs. Kemp Week 5 Matchups: Van @ Eustace (Like last year, may be for the district title) Wills Point vs. Mineola Canton vs. Kemp Good Luck too all, and all staying healthy.
  4. Ore City's 8th grade team played us last week in Van. Even though the score was lop-sided, I came away very impressed with their size and speed. I feel that if they had taken care of the ball better, then it would have been a totally different game. I know that as a coach, that their coaches will get that straightened out, and they will have a very successful season. I thought that #13 was absolutely amazing. I wish we could have kept it away from him on those kickoffs, but that was my fault. What happened to #3. He was in there for a while, and then we did not see him any more. I hope he is not hurt. Good luck this season out there in Ore City. Things look to be good over there this season.
  5. I have heard the name of Zach Duke mentioned as well. A young, successful, cheap starting pitcher, who is from Texas (Waco), so he is accustomed to the Texas heat.
  6. Did you see where Jason Castro hit a 3-run HR in the Futures game that game the U.S. team a 5-3 lead late in the game? They lost 7-5, but a great sign for both the Astros and Castro. He keeps making strides, and a better possibility of being the man behind the dish come next year. Imagine Castro back there, and possibly Ausmus as his Manager next year. You couldn't ask for a better mentor to start your career.
  7. Great game. Only an error by Uribe in the 8th kept it from being a perfect game. 1st No-hitter for the Giants since 1976, and first by a Giant at home since 1974. Amazing. The irony, is the last player to throw a perfect game, is the player he replaced, Randy Johnson.
  8. 43-43. At .500 for the first time since they were 1-1. Bourn had a big night. 2-5, HR, 3 RBIs, SB, and threw 2 runners out in the plate, including one to cut down the go ahead run in the top of the 9th.
  9. Baseball tonight on ESPN is going to it as well. Kid gets into rotation after Randy Johnson gets hurt. Definitely making the most of it.
  10. I'd like to see the lineup change a little. Perhaps: Bourn Pence Berkman Tejada Lee Keppinger/Blum Pudge Matsui I wish they would bring Maysonette back up. Very impressed with him. He is the future at 2B, and I think that could fill Michaels spot, who has pretty much done nothing since they signed him. Experience is fine, but at some point you have to produce. And a HR off of Johnson in SF after hurting his shoulder was nice, but that's about it. Maysonette is a good enough player to be able to get that occasional start in LF to spell Lee, and like I said, with him being the 2B of the future, he could be the guy against lefty starters for Matsui. 42-43 is a lot better than most people expected. Take at least 2 of next 3 and guaranteed to be no worst than at .500 at the break. They are at their best after the break, so who knows what can happen. Ausmus for 2011 (if not sooner). GO 'STROS.
  11. He will probably get comeback player of the year, sign with someone else for more than he is worth, and fall back to what he was the previous 2 years. Hope it doesn't happen, but seen it happen too often. Oh yeah, Berkman now up to .277 with 18 HRs and 54 RBI.
  12. Underrated in the respect of most media outlets don't give him much attention. Does get it from his peers. Agree with the Oswalt and Halladay centiment. Would like to throw Berkman's name in there. Struggled at the beginning of the season, but now on pace for another 30 HR, 100 RBI, 100 walk season, and now up to .272 after today. Will always be in Pujols' shadow. But then who wouldn't.
  13. Teams bidding for Halladay will have to give up at least their top pitching prospect, if not top 2, and probably a third prospect that could be ready to be in the bigs within a couple of years. The biggest obsticle for 95% of the teams is going to be the $20 million price tag that he brings with him for next year. You can count the teams that can take on that burden on one hand with fingers to spare. The Phillies are the most likely destination. Like another poster said, I doubt that the Jays will deal him to an AL team, much less a divisional foe. Watch out for the Dodgers as well. Team I don't want him to go to, the Cards of course. The Astros have a couple of good arms at Round Rock (AAA), and one at Corpus (AA), but they definitely can't take on the payroll. Not to mention that if Oswalt retires after 2012 (like he says he is probably going to do), then that may be too many prospects to give up for a guy that their is no guarantee of re-signing after 2010. My guess is he stays put this year, but maybe a deal works out in the offseason or next year's trade deadline. The team that gets him will have one of the best rotations in the league. Dream rotation for Astros (just a wish, not reality): Halladay, Oswalt, Rodriguez at the top. Not bad. Sadly, it won't happen.
  14. If Blalock gets traded, you could see Smoak at 1B and Davis at 3B. I've heard that discussed in the Dallas area as well. But then again, that is next year.
