  1. This Gilmer fan never picks against Carthage. Plus, there are relatively few Gilmer fans on this site since Traylor left.
  2. A poster called 'oldbuckeye#62' who hasn't been on here since 2018 (so he may be doing it from heaven now) liked to put what he called the 'Buckeye tinkers dang hex' on opponents. So I'll give him credit wherever he is for causing the bad snap. The new QB y'all have is a gamer. If he can learn to pass as well as tall and lanky #17 used to do, watch out. Sam Peterson - had to look up his name. Fame is fleeting or my mind is going, one or the other.
  3. THIS! You left out Craig's List, which took over classified ads more than 20 years ago. I am in this business. It is only because I am a lifelong pessimist who has tried to save and invest everything I ever made that I am not bankrupt and living under a bridge.
  4. Coach Rodgers is now beginning to resemble WWII General George S. Patton as played by the actor George C. Scott. His nickname was "Old Blood and Guts." In the movie, one of the soldiers serving under him quips "Our blood, his guts."
  5. The good news is that Cadon can run for his life better than most.
  6. Gilmer-PT scrimmage info.
  7. I just looked up Argyle's population as of the latest census. While it is larger, Gilmer is not MUCH LARGER than Argyle. The only reason Gilmer is in 4AD2 and not 3AD1 with our former rivals Gladewater and Atlanta is because the Gilmer ISD terrritory covers so many square miles in Upshur County. It's about 30 percent of the county, IIRC. The city of Gilmer covers only 3.8 square miles. It is not only not growing; some of what used to be in the city has been de-annexed in recent decades. 8. From what he has said on his show (and this is not unique to Gilmer, I'm sure), Coach Metzel "takes what the defense gives him." That's his play-calling philosophy in a nutshell (pardon the pun). The way to shut down Gilmer's offense (ahem, Coach Preston...Carthage) is to make the ground game an impossibility and keep us behind the chains. If you can't do that, it's probably going to be a long night.
  9. A narrow definition of East Texas is anywhere pines grow in the wild. There are broader definitions, but in terms of population, it is a very small percentage of the state. So even having only one team out of a dozen playing would still be proportional to our share of the Texas population and maybe even more than proportional.
  10. It is not always a good idea to force Brandon out of the pocket. Time will tell. Celina, being a D1 team already by the numbers, is the solid favorite in this game, but they still have to play it.
  11. The good news/bad news, considering whether you like the matchup, is that this is the last time these two teams will ever meet in the playoffs. It's similar to the Gilmer-Argyle third round playoff game in 2013 at Kincaide Stadium in that respect.
  12. You'll know you've made the big time when they stop calling you China Springs.
  13. Congratulations to your kinsman. He played a helluva game tonight.
  14. You are a very verbose and imaginative writer, but you lost me. As what? Another patsy opponent like Kent State? That's what it'd be at this point.
  15. I think a lot of people probably figured out immediately who buckeyefandom is.
  16. 17-0, Gilmer at the half
  17. I want my money back. This game was not entertaining at all.
  18. He doesn't sound afraid at all. He thinks it should have been 35-0 by halftime if I heard him right.
  19. In 2018, Pleasant Grove shut out Gilmer, 14-0, in Gilmer.
  20. I saw this game online. I think Celina will be Gilmer's semifinal opponent (if we make it that far). I suppose the only stumbling block would be Graham, but I don't see them taking Celina out two years in a row. MaxPreps had Melissa as the second-ranked team in D1 and Celina as seventh in D2. They got it backwards.
  21. I heard from a somewhat reliable source that Gilmer High School had 80 more students enrolled on the first day of 2021 compared to first day of 2020.
  22. Wrong year. It wasn't until 2017 in Gilmer. In 2016, Poppy Brown and the Bux handled PG fairly easily. https://gilmerbuckeyes.blogspot.com/2016/10/gilmer-31-pleasant-grove-10.html
  23. Agreed. Not to take anything away from the legendary Jeff Traylor, but Gilmer in the mid-2000s before the "District of Doom" days was in some very low "power rating" districts. I well remember one night in that era when we were playing a district game against Sabine there. Bux got the ball back with less than two minutes before the half, having already scored about six or seven touchdowns. Gilmer "O" decided to see if they could execute the two-minute drill and score again right quick. Done. No problem. As the game finally ended an hour or so later, the few Sabine partisans left in the stands booed Gilmer at the top of their lungs. It can be argued that some of these cupcake districts didn't adequately prepare the Bux for postseason play. There's a balance to be struck. You don't want to play a perennial power each week, but you need to play opponents that can give you a game. I found the account of the Sabine game. Note Traylor's concern about the lack of competition: https://gilmerbuckeyes.blogspot.com/2007/10/buckeyes-clip-cardinals-for-30th.html
  24. Correct. Stump led the Bux to the state championship game in his sophomore year, only to be routed by Liberty Hill in Waco. That should have been the last time Gilmer ever agreed to play in Waco (also the site of a state championship game loss in 1981), but they went to the well one more time in 2016, losing to Sweetwater in the semifinals. I don't think the game in 2008 was as close as the original poster seems to think it was. As I recall (and have verified by reading Joe Dodd's archived game account), Carthage had the game well in hand with a 31-14 lead and Gilmer rallied back to make the game look closer than it actually was. It was a bit like Gilmer's win over Graham last week except Graham couldn't rally back as well in the second half as Gilmer did at SFA that night.
