  1. Big opening as the Yates Girls Basketball job is open. Who gets this gig? Could be a dream landing spot for someone with ties to the area like Garrett Hilton, although I imagine Kerry Strong’s name will find its way into the conversation.
  2. Does the UIL have any priority to moving it or are they content leaving it in SA?
  3. Let me talk to Coach Wise and see if he feels like dropping a couple hundy in a warmup game.
  4. The Scorpions from Silsbee proved to be too much down the stretch for the once Mighty Jack Yates Lions, clinching their third consecutive state tournament appearance with a 120-103 victory in the 4A Region III title game Saturday at Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State University. A highly anticipated matchup between the top two ranked teams in the state brought out more than 4,000 fans and a whole lot of trash talking in a game many considered to be the de facto state title game, and it didnt disappoint. While the Texas Relays are still a few months away both teams looked as if they were in qualifying heats with a helter skelter pace for four quarters. Yates, which hasn’t made a state tourney appearance since 2014, and hasn’t won one that wasn’t gift wrapped from ineligible Madison players since the 2010 season appeared poised to buck that trend, led by a pair of SFA signees and a trio of Southern New Hampshire online commits. After an auto-tuned National Anthem sung by none other than Yates alumnus Fergie, both teams traded buckets early, but the hate was strong from the striped trio as the old Lion nemesis, the whistle, caused major problems. Mitchell “Big Mitch” Seraille, the 6’8 anchor to the Lion “defense” was whistled for three fouls in the first five minutes, all of them highly questionable according to all Lions fans in attendance, sending him to the bench and creating a major void in the middle. Standing fearless and a foot shorter was Silsbee superstar sophomore Braelon “Too Smooth” Bush who drove the lane with wreck less abandon with Seraille out. Despite the foul trouble and constant whistles from the Golden Triangle officiating crew, the game was back and forth throughout the first half. A 58-58 tie at the half, considering the circumstances would leave many Yates fans satisfied, however Head Coach Greg Wise was the total opposite. Normally the epitome of calm and collected, Wise lit into his team with a 5-minute long rant that left one time Silsbee head coach Kerry Strong scratching his beard while Yates super-fan Bob Knight was left speechless. Silsbee alumnus Mark Henry was strategically placed outside the Yates locker room after half instructed to simply growl and flex, sending the team onto the court with a little more speed than normal, except for Wise, who didn’t flinch; only offering a cup check on the walk by which sent the worlds strongest man to the ground. It took all of one possession for Seraille to pick up his forth foul, and it was clear to everyone in red and yellow that the fix was in. The Lions once again hung around, frustrating Silsbee fans and local bookie Juanito as it was going to take more than a few whistle happy refs to ruin the Lions parade. Heading to the fourth with an 83-82 lead the Lions opened the 4th with a 3 from fabulous freshman Jo Valrie and the Lions felt unbeatable. Insert Devon McCain. The standout Junior who once drew interest from Baylor and SMU now draws it from Bellator and UFC; but the playmaker came alive in the fourth at just the right time, scoring 25 of his 36 points after the break. McCain and Bush helped fuel a 20-2 run that erased the Lions 4-point lead and led to boisterous “You Outta Gas!” chants from the Silsbee fanbase. After a timeout and a broken clipboard the Lions clinged to life with back to back buckets but McCain delivered the knockout blow with a personal 8-0 run to put things away. The Lion faithful avoided the cliche “we are proud of you” chants instead going with “Aint no debatin, these refs were hatin” and “You woulda got a beatin but these refs stay cheatin!” bringing about laughs and waves from the pompous Silsbee fans. Seraille finished with just 6 points in 8 minutes for the Lions, a strategy that clearly “paid” off for the Scorpions, while Hughes finished with 29 points as they both head north up Highway 59 to SFA in the fall. The duo of Bush and McCain couldn’t be stopped, finishing with 37 and 36 respectively with Bush collecting tournament MVP. Wise, normally known as the Sergeant of Sportsmanship was the Mayor of Saltyville postgame with the local media, directly blaming the poor officiating on his teams woes while assuring everyone his team would make the trek to San Antonio to pick up their silver medals for falling just short in the 1 vs 2 matchup in hopes that he can dig up an incorrect address for a Silsbee starter in the coming weeks. He was oddly quiet though on rumors linking him to the University of Arizona job, as he is highly regarded as the best clean recruiter in the state of Texas. Silsbee (28-8) advances to their third straight state tournament where they will face and destroy Somerset at 3pm on Friday and another pushover opponent on Saturday. As for the Lions(25-3), well, theres always next year. Lets Go Lions!
  5. I’ll takes Muenster until someone beats them in any sport.
  6. Really impressed with the way Coach Strong has put the whole DeSoto mess in the rearview mirror and focused on this playoff run. Best of luck Tuesday.
  7. “There are people that sit on the message board and they hide behind the message board," he continued. "They can say anything they want to say because they're so cowardly that they won't say it to your face.” Wonder what his username is?
  8. I’ve got something official. The “sources” in Marshall are, as Chuck would say, turrrrrible.
  9. The fans in attendance at the Pirate Center were in for a rare treat Friday night in a first place seeding game...a win by the home team. Despite a slow start, the Mighty Wildcats from Big Sandy claimed the #1 seed in District 16-2A with a 58-50 win over the fighting Gary Colemans. The two teams were deadlocked in a first place tie with identical 9-1 records, having split the regular season matchup, each defending their home court. What better place to settle the tie than a centrally located site, Pine Tree High School. The scrappy Colemans came out hot from the start, eager to prove their victory over the Wildcats earlier in the week was no fluke. Cason “Stormy” Daniels couldn’t be kept quiet, connecting on back to back bombs from deep on the teams first two possessions, giving the Wildcats a quick punch in the mouth and an early 10-0 advantage to the Colemans. Smoaky legend and Big Sandy head honcho Kerry Strong wouldn’t be trumped however, calling for All-Upshur county guard Josiah “Jumpman” Johnson off the bench. In his first game back the do it all guard came off the bench for the first time since the age of 4, when he lead his U12 team in scoring, and wasted little time igniting the Wildcats. A pair of buckets and an assist brought the Wildcats within striking distance, only down 15-10 after one quarter. What the Colemans lacked in size, they more than made up for with heart, and that was on display early in the second quarter. Daniels was “lit” as the kids say, hitting his 4th triple of the night early in the second frame to push the lead back to double digits. Collin “C-Squared” Coleman had his back with a pair of buckets and it looked like Deja Vu all over again as the Colemans stretched their lead before the break, only to be upstaged by the returning Wildcat star. Johnson came up huge just before half, getting to the basket at will with a silky smooth euro step which repeatedly angered a confused Gary fanbase as they frustratedly stood in unison and begged for travel calls seemingly all night long. It didn’t bother Johnson, who rose up and buried a trey from just outside the Crown Kia parking lot just before the half ended, cutting the deficit to just 3 at the break. As Coach Strong entered the halftime locker room eager to congratulate his bunch on only being down 3 he was met with an unexpectedly angered bunch. The whispers of the Gary players during the game to the Wildcats that their coach was fielding other job offers and didn’t want to be there, a constant Smoaky.com rumor, had clearly rattled the Wildcats. In a scene straight out of a Mighty Ducks movie Coach Strong had to do his best Gordon Bombay, assuring his players that despite the constant internet rumors he was their coach, and wanted to be their coach, for the long haul. The locker room erupted and the Colemans never stood a chance after that. It was different strokes for Gary in the second half, as lockdown defense limited Daniels to just three points after the break. Johnson controlled the pace after the break, sliding through the defense in James Harden fashion at times, finishing at the rim and displaying a handle that drew oohs and ahhs from the Wildcat faithful and “he caint do that” and “thats a travel” from a knowledgeable Gary side that included famous alumni Gary Busey and Gary Sinise aka Lieutenant Dannnn. Freshman Elijah “David” Beard hit a big pair of triples down the stretch with a “whatchu talkin bout Willis” glare to a loud Gary crowd and sophomore Joshua Shipman added several key buckets as the Wildcats kept Gary at bay. Despite a big 4th quarter from Gary’s Cole “Xavier” McDaniel the Wildcats held on late as Johnson went 8-8 from the line in the final frame. Despite being a bit rusty from a short layoff Johnson finished with 33 points, Shipman added 10 and Beard contributed 6. The trio of Daniels, Coleman and McDaniels combined for 44 points in the losing effort. Gary (21-13) will open the playoffs Tuesday night against Linden Kildare at a site and time to be determined. The seeding game throws off plans for a much anticipated warmup game between teacher and pupil, Coach Wise and Coach Strong, as Yates will no longer be hosting the Wildcats Saturday night. Ticket refunds will reportedly be accepted through your local scalper where anyone needing/selling tickets is available. The Wildcats (22-6) now move their focus towards the Macaques from McLeod as they too will meet in the middle with a 6 PM tip set for Tuesday night in Union Grove. Come out and support the Wildcats as they look to capture their first ever state championship. Lets go Wildcats!
  10. My apologies. Those struggling Hawks from Big Sandy improved to 12-4 on the season with a win tonight at 4A Spring Hill. Big night for Coach Strong back at his alma mater, especially with all the Smoaky noise on what the problem is with his ballclub. We’ll see how they fare at Athens on Tuesday.
  11. Does appear they’ve come back down to earth a bit after several years in a row at state. Relax though Coug, Coach Foster will have them back in San Antonio before you know it.
  12. I would argue that hoops have fallen on hard times for longer than just recently.
