  1. It never fails that within seconds of this debate coming up there are always voices in support of the private schools stating some version of "public schools recruit too". I always wonder what these same people do when they are correcting some aberrant behavior of their children and the child says "so and so does it too". That is a really lame debating point. Yes some public schools do recruit, but there are rules against it and if caught they pay a hefty price. Just because some public schools do recruit is not a valid reason to admit the private schools to the UIL If you want a private school education for your child I applaud you and I certainly understand. But if the public school atmosphere is not acceptable for your family for whatever reason why is it tolerable when it comes to competing with them in extracurricular activities? You cannot have your cake and eat it. If you make the decision to attend a private school fine, but you must live by the consequences. The bottom line is this, the UIL is based on attendance zones and schools not being allowed to give any inducements to students that attend or might attend a particular school. Private schools CANNOT follow those guidelines, it is impossible. I cannot loan a kid at my school $2.50 because he forgot his lunch money yet private schools can give students scholarships worth thousands. Membership in the UIL is not a right and I still am very upset with the UIL allowing the two Jesuits too enter. It is not the problem of the UIL that they did not have a league to compete in.
  2. If the charges were dropped that means he is innocent, INNOCENT. As in not even "not guilty".
  3. Between the Jesuits and the Charter Schools I would say that the camels nose is already under the fence. I would speculate that within the next ten years any school that wants in the UIL will be allowed to do so. One thing is for sure, we can count on the UIL leadership to fight the good fight for us on this one..........when pigs fly upside and backwards that is.
  4. i think its a great offense but it dont help the kids get to the next level. you can run it on the highschool level but not college or the pros. run an offens that can send some kids to college instead of misdirection all the time. Dont get me wrong if it works then run it but the kids are not getting look at on the college level for it foreal. Not once in twelve years of coaching and three times twelve years of being a coaches son and grandson have I heard of a college NOT recruiting a kid because of the scheme they played while in HS. Of course that is just me.
  5. Any kid that leaves the program based on what offense the new coach ran at his prior school is not worth having in the program. Seems to me the sensible thing to do would be to at least meet the new coach, talk to him about his scheme and get to know the guy before you turn into a quitter. I just had an image of me going up to my father and telling him I was going to quit because I did not like the style of offense the new coach ran at his old school. Why a chill just ran down my spine I have no idea. LOL
  6. I am not implying guilt in this case but as for coaches who are found to have been guilty of this behavior I will never understand what could cause someone to put their career, the well being of their family, their freedom, etc.... at risk over something like this. There is nobody out there that would make this worth it.
  7. As long as Jerry Jones has anything to do with the team I could care less if they ever win another game. First he disrespects Tom Landry the way he did then he trips over his bottom lip (ego) and runs Jimmy Johnson off. They would have won two or three more Super Bowls if they keep Johnsons Staff intact instead we get the Bootlickers Boob as the coach. He may be a brilliant businessman but he has not let that get in the way of being a world class horses butt.
  8. No disrespect to the new Timpson Coach but are there really those here or anywhere for that matter that expect someone to believe that Norman Cobb did not expect his teams to behave with class and sportsmanship?
  9. From what I saw of University if you had gotten in a zone #35 would have nailed about twenty threes. That guy did not miss against Red Oak. Phenomenal shooting touch from the edge. I don't think he missed five shots if you counted the pregame.
  10. John Tyler v. Conroe Bi-District 1973 #1 in state vs. #2 Tyler had a guy named Campbell actually three guys named Campbell, a couple of them wound up playing in Austin you may have heard of them. TJ won 10-7 and goes on to win state by an average margin of 30+ in every other playoff game. Only game his senior year Earl did not score or gain 100. To this day he will tell you that was the toughest game he ever played in.
  11. The guy that was the HFC this past season got reassigned right after the end of football. According to what I was told the OC was promoted right away. Is someone trying to say that the NEWEST HFC has now left? Even if this is not the case the turnover there the last few years is abysmal and the kids are paying a high price because they cannot get their act together and stick with someone.
  12. Long way for Rivercrest to go. ROADTRIP!!!
  13. From what I saw the rest of the team did a better job of moving without the ball than most teams I have seen. VERY active on offense kids without the ball are moving to get open or setting screens. I no way did I see a team that sat on their heels just watching the star. Like I said earlier, the other kids were the ones that won it for Athens early in the game by knocking down buckets when the "good" kid was being double teamed. I doubt that Athens will be troubled by a pressing defense. From what I saw they would like nothing better than to get in an up tempo running game. I thought they were very well coached and most well coached teams have little trouble breaking the press. If you are a well coached team and not totally outmatched talent wise when pressed you should have three passes and a layup.
  14. From what I saw last night she did not take any "bad shots" there were a few in the fourth quarter that were a little "iffy" only because they looked bad and I attribute this to her being out of gas. This kid plays with her motor running at 100% the entire game and late in the fourth quarter she was understandbly running on fumes. Without a doubt one of the better talents I have seen in some time. The hardest thing in basketball is for your point to be your high scorer. Once you give up the ball it is really hard to get it back to score. The rest of the Athens team complements her really well. The difference in the game in my opinion was in the first half Lorena was overplaying the Athens girl and when she hit the open "man" they were knocking the bottom out of the basket. The thing that impressed me most about Athens was the way they played in your grill defense the entire game. Very impressive, very well coached team. Plus Athens has an assistant coach that is HOT!!!! :notworthy:
  15. To those whining about Cayuga running up the score I hope that the next time you play Cayuga leaves the starters in the entire game and leaves the press on. When you go home afterwards having been beaten by 2oo points THEN you can whine about getting the score run up on you. I have seen Hubbard personally in basketball and on film in football and what I am wondering is, why aren't they better than they are?
  16. Huffman to Bryan is a one heckuva road trip for East Texas. But I will admit, I do like it.
  17. That is great to see. I am very happy for those in Cayuga. It is awesome when schools that have "struggled" historically start having some success. Great football season and it appears that the hoopsters are going strong also. Must be very exciting to be in Cayuga these days.
  18. I do not know the latest "victim" in Trinity but the two prior AD's there were dang good football coaches and upstanding and moral men. I have talked to several that have been there the last few years and all of them were glad to put Trinity in their rear view mirror because of administration.
  19. Bet they want the spread in Malakoff, they just went through a few years of wishbone and I would imagine that they are tired of the power running game.
  20. We have regulations out the whazoo now and we have problems. But for the record I never said eliminate the regulations. Nor did I as another poster stated say we need to abolish the UIL. I referred basketball for few years a few years ago including quite a few playoff games and I am still waiting on a check that has a piece of the gate attached as our regulations require. Not one person has caught on to my primary point so I will state it again. The skill level, competence, attitude, etc..... of officials has been dropping for years. Parents and some coaches are at an all time when it comes to verbally abusing officials. The pay rate for officials has not kept up with inflation and they were not making enough to start with. To attract new, motivated, skilled officials only one thing will work. Give them a raise! That is Economics 101. No bureaucrat in the state capital will EVER regulate us out of this mess and I think I can safely say that when it comes to officiating we are just at the start of this mess. But I guess I could take the point of some and agree with getting people out of the stands to tide us over. No problems on the horizon there.
  21. I guarantee you that if my suggestion were enacted and half of the UIL staff were told to go get real jobs in education you would still get all the rulings you need. The UIL = government bureacracy. Bloated / over staffed / overpaid. Schools all the time in Texas have financial crunches and have to cut back. How many times you want to bet the UIL has cut staff? When the UIL bigshots meet it is in the most expensive hotels in Austin for two or three days, betcha anything that they do not limit themselves to the sixty or seventy bucks a night for room and twenty five bucks a day we get paid per diem. When we as schools meet it is in someones cafeteria and if we are lucky they have pizza catered. Of course we meet at night so our districts don't have to pay for subs. You wanna guess the odds the UIL holds themselves to the same standards? You could get every teacher in the state of Texas a raise on what the UIL spends every spring on nifty blue polos and straw hats for a bunch of "officials" to stand around and watch other people run off events at the regional track meets. But of course they are all there for the kids. Please. Officials of all sports have been getting screwed for years in this state. I say way to go to the baseball officials for finally standing up to the UIL.
  22. I agree IF he is found to have been involved. In this country we call that a trial. Until someone is found guilty they are innocent. Personally I find it just a trifle had to believe that a police department, a school district, and a coaching staff, all conspired to get this kid out of jail with charges dismissed just so he could play football. If this kid is guilty I hope he pays the price and I pray that he sees the light and gets his life on track. If there was a conspiracy, a bunch of people need to go to jail.
  23. Spot on. These people that are whining about "it's all about the kids etc" sound like a bad Simpsons episode. Yeah the kids need a break but the people umpiring the games should not be screwed in the process. The fact that some schools do not charge for attending baseball games is not the problem of the umpires. Schools CAN afford to pay officials a reasonable wage. Having been in education for over twenty years I can safely say that most schools waste more money on a daily basis than what they pay for officials. Everytime I hear an empty suit from the UIL say "We just want to do what's best for the kids" I run and hide. To say that the UIL works for the schools is a joke on just about every issue whether it be allowing private schools to compete in the UIL or determing state championships for football the UIL ignores what the schools want. Then they justify it by saying "we are just doing what's best for the kids". From where I sit the individual communities know what is best for the kids. NOT some centralized governmental bureauacracy with NO accountability. The UIL needs to butt out and let the districts and associations work this out. If not for the UIL this would never have come to this point. If we need to save money I suggest firing half of the UIL staff, and cutting the salary of the rest, you would see no effect on the day to operations of extra curricular activities.
