Boerne plays “the Horse” at the beginning of the second quarter every game before heading down to the end zone. It’s my daughter’s favorite in the stands routine to dance to. I wish more teams would play “Callout” outside of East Texas. It’s got an intimidating feel to it especially when the band gets into it with all the motion. Chapel Hill did a great job against Boerne with it and the acoustics of the Alamodome really made it pop. I usually think of Gilmer more when I hear it due to Navasota’s two playoff games in 2009 and 2012 with them.

If Boerne doesn’t take their foot off the gas, or gets any of the three big missed calls (late hit on 18, roughing/late hit on 9, and running into punter) never mind some of the missed PIs, it’s a different game. I say both because Boerne was good enough to overcome bad officiating but conservative play calling and some youthful mistakes scattered around were the main issues that let CS score 24 unanswered. The Cougars showed their championship experience and pedigree while Boerne watched.

Same here, I knew the Hounds were solid but corralling opposing team speed on defense was what gave me pause and had me thinking CH vs CS a couple weeks ago. Boerne’s defense is playing phenomenal especially against the run. I think if the CH QB could have connected on a few of those throws it may have opened things up a little more for them, but the Hound D did cause the pressure, played close pass defense and picked off three throws and bobble-dropped a sure pick 6. I expect the Cougar offensive line to play much better ball so I’m looking forward to an exciting game.

I have to go with the Hounds. They’ve been proving themselves outscoring the last 3 playoff opponents 135-19 with two shutouts. China Spring is still very strong and deserves respect, but based on the Decatur game, they are not invincible. I’m going with a 38-28 type Boerne win for their first state championship! I would not be shocked at all for an even bigger Boerne defensive effort.

It can be a sore spot for Champion HS fans, but Boerne ISD implemented High School choice after a lot of parent complaints that Champion had much stronger and diverse academic programs. It used to be that north of TX46 went to BHS and south of TX46 went to CHS. There are a few starters at BHS that live in the old Champion feeder zone, but it’s not as impactful as Champion would have you believe. They had a down year, Boerne is having a statement year.

Bode Brown got hurt on a flip tackle near the goal line back during a district game at Memorial if I remember right. He’s been in jeans and jersey ever since. Hicks and Dement have been toting all year though. Dement is the feature back now, Hicks runs hard but Dement is just tougher to get a clean shot on. It helps when the defense usually can’t get a hand on you until you’re up to speed 3 yards past the LOS. When you have to respect 14 Hendrix and three other good receivers and watch the running back coming out of the backfield, it’s tough to commit numbers to overcome those 5 big linemen. At least so far, ready to see if they can handle CH athleticism on their DL. I think the nose tackle and LBs for Calallen were the best they faced so far and they passed that test.

I’ve seen some weird stay lines on tackles. 22 Hutson Hendrix is the leading tackler, I can assure you he’s had way more solo tackles than that. Most of Boerne’s opponents have been ground and pound offenses, not a lot of real speed on the outside edges save for Flour Bluff (5A-2 Quarterfinalist) and Antonian Prep (Quality Private Squad). It’s probably a lot easier to credit multiple tacklers than to spot the main man in the pile when the ball is up the middle 75% of the plays.

Leave early tomorrow, get there a few hours ahead of time. You can either watch Cuero/Wimberley at the dome first or walk the River Walk and Alamo which are very close to the Alamodome. Get a hotel room on the River Walk so you can do either post game celebratory drinks or drown your sorrows. Winning either way!

You can only play who’s on your schedule. It’ll be a good game.

Well they can’t even get the game time right (3 PM) but only the old folks listen to Boerne Radio. The games are all on either the Greyhound Sports Network or NFHS for streaming.

You bet we did, lol. Easily the best smack talk and chest puffing when an “outsider” like Sota came out of the woodwork on the East Texas boards. Took a few seasons and classes of kids to get over the hump for the ole Rattlers but it paid off 2012-2014. Wish we could have kept Fedora, but even A&M Consol couldn’t keep him happy. I was secretly hoping for a Boerne/Navasota matchup in this round but the Rattlers just aren’t on that level anymore. Chapel Hill, Kilgore, Gilmer and Carthage are still plugging away in Region III though

Where is that at? No real football fan is looking past CH. Maybe a kid or idiot journalist.

Well this is my first post in 14 years here, I moved away from Navasota years ago and really only made a few state championships last decade. I’ve been in Boerne since 2013. Really started to watch them and Champion H.S. the last few years as my oldest got closer to her freshman year. Hoping for a Greyhound win vs an opponent that is familiar to me over the years so my baby girl gets to dance on the Cowboys star at halftime next week. I wanted to say that I agree with the few guys above that said that you can’t just rely on strength of schedule alone. Boerne surprised all of us when they straight up whipped Calallen last week. That was an eye opener for the region. They are a passing team but they run the ball very well also. Only one skill position is a senior but the lines have a good group of seniors and they are very big for a 4A squad. They have enough speed to get open where they need to be on their route and they catch 90% of the balls thrown their way. QB #9 is Jaxon Baize, a sophomore. His favorite target is WR #7 Braden Baize, a senior and his older brother. Braden didn’t play last year for some reason but he runs clean routes, catches everything including jump balls, and will not go down from poor tackling attempts. #11 Brooks Perez is the other leading receiver and is also a sophomore. TJ Dement #18 a junior and Adam Hicks #1 a sophomore are the main two running backs. Defensively they have surprising speed in the secondary and will be aggressive jumping routes for picks. Chapel Hill definitely has me worried because of the “been there” factor and the talent and speed, but they had better play a clean game, limit penalties and turnovers, and don’t miss their blocks. Boerne has made teams pay all year long for sloppy play. I hope that everyone makes it safe down to the Alamodome tomorrow. I’ve been traveling between Boerne and Shreveport for years for work so I know it’s a haul.

Don't add fuel to the fire. Besides, both onside kick attempts are on youtube. Look them up. The ref threw the flag right as the kickoff happened. Kye and his coverage weren't on the same page about how he would approach and kick the ball, and as a result, the guy two down from him on Gilmer's side of the field is a half yard past the ball when he kicks it. It was the correct call. Contrarily, the 4th and 5 is also on there. Sweed was hit at first down yardage, but the official on the sideline marked it where he was knocked backwards out of bounds at. Bad call? Nope, good awareness and play by the Gilmer defender in making a big hit right at the first down line. If this were the NFL, we could review it for a better spot. But it is not, and credit Gilmer on making a big defensive stop, which they then scored off of. The Rattler defense still could have stopped Gilmer after that turnover on downs, but did not. Hey, calls against our team that are close are never going to be just accepted. But even if you cannot accept that the call was correct and there is nothing you can do about it, you can always at least credit the other team. I know you did, navasotatx, and that is what I would expect from someone representing our great fan base. After all, in a 42-35 game, penalties obviously did not do much to hamper the teams.

Calhoun only comes in on defense in short yardage situations usually. Having him in there more often wore him down on offense, hence a few blown assignments. But are you saying that holding Gilmer to 14 points in the second half is not an improvement from giving up 28 in the first half? While we're at it, who else has held Gilmer to 14 points in the second half this year? The 3rd quarter is usually Gilmer's cruise control on the way to a blowout.

Reply to above: 1.) Yes, Gilmer has great depth. Navasota wasn't worn down by depth so much as they were by their offense keeping their defense on the field in the second half. Credit Gilmer's defensive adjustments, namely aggressive blitzing. 2.) Whatever it was, it sure worked good for both teams. 3.) Yes, they were loud. I was shocked more Navasota fans made the Silsbee game than this one. Probably thought they would get blown out or something. 4.) He punted very well. That one with a 21 yard Gilmer roll after landing helped, especially since Navasota had no one back to receive it defending a possible fake on 4th and 1. Props to him. 5.) Here is where I disagree, and strongly. Those were the correct calls, and you are forgetting that Navasota was flagged twice as well for the same penalty and deservedly, as they were no doubters. Just because the Buckeye defender had a play on the ball doesn't mean the offensive receiver loses the chance to catch the ball as well. They both went for the ball. If anything, it should have been a no call or offsetting. But if the call is made one way or the other, usually the defender gets flagged. 6.) Gilmer has had no need to recover an onside kick up until this game. Their attempt was basically a trick play, trying to gain the upper hand in a tight contest. As far as recovering an attempt by another team, it worked. Now you face Cuero. Cuero is always a strong program. They are like a football mecca in a dry desert of mediocrity that is South Texas football. They will probably show you a more disciplined defense, though they won't be too much different on offense from what Navasota is. Good luck Buckeyes, it is time to talk Rattler basketball and another state ranking to live up to. The road goes on forever, and the party never ends!

I am pulling for the Rattlers, and I know they can pull off the upset. I don't see it happening per say, but I would be willing to bet Gilmer is not joking around this week in practice. As a matter of fact, I doubt the Buckeyes have taken anyone lightly. They have been on fire all season and nobody has called the fire department yet.

I may be a little partial to Caldwell, but I think their defense will give them their best shot at knocking off the defending champions. The Hornet offense is the Slot-T, and they played another Slot-T in Cleveland. Their OT game was over before most other games were done with regulation! They run, run, and run. The Hornet's fullback, little Kysan Woolverton is good for 4 up the middle on almost every touch. If he is getting 4 a carry, that opens up the sweep and end around, and occasionally the QB bootleg. Nelson Scott is their speedy back. But their defensive line is pretty big and fast, and their linebackers are too. I don't know about their secondary in pass coverage, Cameron gave them a good run for their money, but usually their front seven are in the backfield so fast, the QB doesn't have time to throw a good pass. My head says Carthage 21-13, but if Caldwell executes and limits mistakes, Caldwell will win this one.

Navasota 24, Bellville 14. Good game. 3 INT by Rattler D were key in halting Brahma drives. The Brahma D held Navasota to a FG in the second half, also stopping them on downs three times in the game.

Well, I thought maybe there would be some interest outside of central Texas in a matchup this big. Well, I am still hyped about this game. After Celina lost, it is now #9 at #6.

You are forgiven for your ignorance. I hope Jacksonville doesn't fall down to 3A anytime soon. Not for our sake, but for the Tribe's sake. Ask Navasota, Brownwood, Palestine, West Orange Stark, etc.....

Should be a helluva game. I hope the weather is not as bad as predicted next Friday. What are the thoughts of those who have an interest in this top ten matchup? I have confidence in the Rattler defense to be the edge in this game. Rankings are set aside, because they really have no bearing in this rivalry, these two teams always come out thirsty for blood against each other. Bellville should have the edge on paper because of the home field and defensive experience. They do have some issues on offense, mainly line size and strength. Their QB is a three year starter, though not all at QB, who knows how to win. Navasota's defense has pitched two shutouts out of their three road games, one to 4A Henderson and one to 2A Hearne. A under the radar Palestine squad put up 20 on them in week 1. Navasota's offense is led by arguably the most dangerous athlete in Region III, Kye Hildreth, and a very large line with 3 three year starters. Other skill position players with mostly JV experience have shown promise, but are still untested by a team like Bellville. I don't think a good prediction is within my reach yet, but the homer in me says 28-21 Navasota. They are for real this year, without all the hype given to the big names from last year.....if they win this game.

Navasota 27, Hearne 0 FINAL Navasota 324 yards rushing, 98 passing. 80 yards in penalties. Hearne 67 yards rushing, 31 passing. 160 yards in penalties. Outstanding performers were Kye Hildreth with 155 yards rushing and 2 TDs, one passing, Kesnick Jones with 114 yards rushing. Aaron Collins had 3 catches for 40+ and a TD. Good game Rattlers! Big, big matchup with Bellville there next Friday!

Not to pick at Van, but I thought their defense was their strong point? Did they have an off night?
