  1. I would love for them all to be 4A... Actually, I dont care about TX High as long as they arent in the same district as Marshall. It was kindof nice having Longview in our district for the safety in a 20 minute trip down highway 80.
  2. There has been talk in the past about cutting PE and keeping all sports after school to save money. But most Coaches are PE teachers so it is a fail idea, although it wouldnt be a bad idea to give them a year or 2 to get certified to teach something else. The way we are going, music, pe, health, and almost all electives will be cut at some point. So schools will be reduced to learning what we "have to know".
  3. What's really sad is sometimes that is the best kid at your school for that event...
  4. I can give you some good ones from the private school side. (1) Track meet scheduled to start at 4:00. We really start at 4:30 because without the other 2 teams its only us... (2) We break for field events... they take 3 hours. (3) Because the field events are so demanding, we need a 45 min break before we start running. (4) The "officials" for the event measure the long and triple jump from the front foot instead of the back. (5) (I'm an athletic trainer just so you understand this next one) 2mile starts at 7:00, girl comes up at 6:45 and says "my hamstring hurts." Respond "Where were you at 5:30?" Girl: "At Rosa's getting a snack." What did you do to hurt it? "I don't know" Respond "Ok we will talk after your race." (6) We had a "practice meet" against another local school (just 2 schools). It lasted 5 hours... I am sure there is more, if this is still running Thursday, I am sure I'll have some fresh material.
  5. I believe they went 7-3 as freshmen. They lost in a mud battlle, to Longview, and I don't really remember the other one (maybe Kilgore).
  6. I wasn't throwing this at democrats. I was throwing this at our government trying to be Socialists. (1) You can't allow school districts to be "independent" then attempt to control their money, even if you give it to them. (2) This legistlation looks like one of those smoke screen bills thrown out there where his people complain about something, so I'll write this and when it gets rejected I'll say "I tried" and get re-elected. The solutions are easy from an educators point of view. Give education enough money to run properly. But the TX government can't look at it that way... if we take away to money we have for roads, limos, airplanes, and personal escorts, what would we do then? Dallas ISD is doing something perplexing to me. They are laying off 1-3rd year teachers. But keeping the older ones. Why? Fire the ones that don't teach. Fire the ones that are only there to coach a sport. I had coaches as teachers in schools that I did not learn a single thing, well I did learn alot about Braveheart, Shrek, and Pochahontas. I had an English class in High School where we were assigned to read a book, but our tests were only over the movies. For Shakespeare, we watched the Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio. Why aren't these teachers being laid off? Whatever, I could go on about this for days... but education doesn't really matter right?
  7. Whether Tutt "wins" it or not, he will split snaps with Rogers. I think it will be much like Fitzgerald and French. Where it was a bit obvious when we put French in, we were running right, or left. But the difference between the duo next year is that they can both throw the football a mile... just one of them is more accurate, while the other one can outrun the wind. Mavchamp, who do you see being the RB? I know Mario Adkins was the RB when these guys were freshmen, any chance he makes an appearance there again? Or will he just be the Linebacker that makes everything go for Marshall on Defense? Next year will be interesting to see. This has been the class that Marshall coaches were drooling over for the past 4 years... lots of expectations, and maybe the last legitimate shot of making a deep run for 2-3 years.
  8. The school boards and supt.s are failing. That is why. But this legistlation wouldnt hold up against the Texas Supreme Court if it went that far. It takes the Obama method and forces independent "buisnesses" such as the schools and tells them what to do with their money. I think for anything like this to happen, the "Independent" part will have to vanish and we start having Texas School District Region 1-A, etc etc. Which can be done if we keep with our socialist laws etc. And as someone mentioned above, go out and vote and know what you are voting for. We voted in a Democrat as president... That I'm not upset about. But we voted in a Democrat with views that mock Socialist leaders and ideals. Now these same views are creeping down into our state governments? Get these people out of office!
  9. I work at a private school. While in theory, this would work out perfect. But in reality, some of your best players would not play any sports because they can't afford it. Or Dr. _______ would be paying for 2-3 kids because he wants his son to have a legit shot of playing on a good team. I work at a private school. My parents pay close to $1000 for their kid to play football each year. This includes most of their travel expenses, jerseys, equipment upkeep, 2 new workout shirts and shorts, and their game day stuff each year. They still have to come up with money for food etc on their away trips (this is the one thing I'm 100% ok with). Another good idea mentioned though. Why do bands at most schools get the concession stand money? I kind of have an idea why in Marshall. The band parents don't care as much about the football game as the football parents do. But really? Why would football programs allow this to happen without a fight? They are losing alot of money for those 5-6 home games.
  10. I'm not calling for a change... yet. I was just wondering if you had any thoughts regarding the statement "Is he on the hotseat?" I felt like he has been there for a few years. But what he did with Haigwood, Anderson, and Co. bought him a couple of years. That team was picked 6th in that district and was competitive with Longview (for 3 of the 4 quarters). Last year, they were expected to finish 2nd and lost a couple of games that shouldnt have been that competitive. I believe that put him back on the burner. I've said it in the past... I respect what Harris has done with that program. They find ways to send at least 6-7 kids to college SOMEWHERE, to play football and escape Marshall, Texas. I just believe that if the offensive output doesn't improve this year and they go in as the #4 seed out of 14-4A and are 1 and done again, I think Harris will probably be done as well.
  11. With UIL rules and regulations, how much can booster clubs give and what can they give to? Do they give the money to the school or do they give it to athletics? Are booster clubs purpose to "boost" funds or "boost" spirits? That is one thing I've always been perplexed by b/c booster clubs are different everywhere. It seems that private schools rely on booster clubs for funds, but they fund all athletics. In East Texas, booster clubs mainly boost football then vanish and reappear with about 1/4 of the people for baseball.
  12. Question about the Lady Mavs softball... (1) Who is thier #1 pitcher? Who is #2? (2) How far are they expected to make it in the playoffs? Are they competitive?
  13. Pine Tree never gives up. They just have not had the horses nor the talent to hang in games against good teams for all 4 quarters. And what you said about Hallsville seems to be a broken record. They hang in games against good teams. They have a great strategy when they play Marshall and seems to come down to the end every year. But they lose games against bad teams. So where does that put them? At the bottom for me. Now if the OC and DC in Nac are gone, I would have to agree and move them down with Hallsville and Pine Tree for next year. Now for a real debate... in 14-4A are there any coaches that you would say are on the hot seat this season? I think Thed Harris has been on the hot seat with the fans for a couple of years now, but not with the administration because he does win and he does put kids in college. I think this year will be his first year that he could be in trouble if they dont make the playoffs. Anyone else feel the same about any other coaches in 14-4A?
  14. Not sure if thats a shot at Pine Tree or w/e but I will say this. Some districts have the tax money to fund their education system. Some do not. We are debating for the sake of debating sports because this a sports forum. Most of the money we lose comes from stuff we can't replace. Office supplies, salaries, electricity bills, textbooks etc etc. But you think of something like a stadium... that will be a multi purpose facility. Graduations, football games, soccer games, track meets, field days, Walk for the Cure events, etc. $29m is relatively affordable if you look at modern day new high school stadiums. Most of that money will come from the tax payers and a slight increase that most middle class families won't really notice. Our losses in athletics stem from alot of things. The events we host aren't where the losses come in. Its the events we go to that kill us. We pay for bus drivers, food, drinks, police escorts. In Marshall, we ate a Golden Corral and fed about 80 ppl every away game and also had a post game meal. Throw in 160 20oz Pepsis and the cost can get outrageous for 3-4 away games. There is also this "mystique" about riding a charter bus to big playoff games and games over 2 hrs away. I think its a HUGE waste. Marshall was very careful about their use of charter buses and I completely respected that aspect of it. But I see some schools get one every game... even for games 30 miles away. I am not sure what the rate in East Texas is for that, but for a trip from Fort Worth to Dallas it costs my current school $800 and that is a huge discount off of the normal price (one of our parents own the company). If I get another post, I can think of some ways to cut costs in my own area of expertise.... Athletic Training... I will chime in on that in the next episode...
  15. Being in Fort Worth and getting a full year of listening to the news each night, I will tell you this... Whoever does the voting for Dallas ISD are uneducated and do not research anything. Everything about Dallas ISD is BAD. It makes Fort Worth ISD look amazing, and FWISD is so bad that there are at least 40+ private schools in Fort Worth that I can name off the top of my head. Home schools are so big in DFW that we could play an entire private school basketball schedule against homeschool seasonal teams. But i believe the supt. you mentioned has been removed from dallas ISD. Or is at least under the microscope.
  16. I think Tyler ISD works because both schools are in Tyler as well. Whitehouse, Bullard, and w/e would go #### if the state said they needed to join Tyler ISD bc they arent Tyler. Although it seems like each of them are about 5 mins outside of town.
  17. That's where the money is saved. 1 Supt. and 1 Asst Supt. should be enough to handle what I am proposing. 1 AD for the district and 3 Head Football Coaches. Make everyone have to teach, heads 1 class, assts full load minus 2 athletic periods and 1 conf period. The perception of an athletic director is skewed in East Texas. Mainly because its always the Head football coach. Why? So we can pay him $80k+ with no real administration experience. An athletic director should not be biased to 1 sport, which most cases it is. An athletic director should be able to adequately allocate funds as needed to each individual sport. They should know what is going on comprehensively throughout all of their athletic programs. Take Mesquite ISD for example. They have 1 AD, and an athletic Coordinator at each school. That athletic coordinator is an extra stipend, but comes with alot of responsibilities. It's not always the head football coach, but there is alot on the table with that position as well. Such as scheduling and keeping checks and balances on all aspects of the athletics at each individual school. Again this is all examples and whatnot. I am taking big city practices and putting it in some possible East Texas scenarios. This couldn't be done at a smaller ISD like Longview ISD. This would require 3-4 high schools to manage plus plenty of Junior high feeder schools to work properly. But it would save alot of money across the state. Would this solve all of the problems? Absolutely not. Would it cause more problems? Potentially, but not financially if done right. Is it realistic? Probably not, since the likelyhood of independent towns joining together for their education system seems ridiculous to east Texans.
  18. Kilgore may be 1 spot too high and Whitehouse may be 1 spot too low. Marshall SHOULD take 2nd, but we know how well we've done to our expectations the past few years... Jacksonville plays well enough to make the playoffs and Nac has made continual strides to get better. But I said in a earlier post that we have 2 teams expected to finish at the bottom, everyone is still in play. But based on last year and what I see coming back, I think Kilgore will be a real contender and Marshall will be better than alot are giving them credit for. J'ville and Whitehouse will be where they traditionally are without any big stars which is a good middle of the pack football team. So that leaves Nac... I don't know what really to say about them except they play well as a team. I don't know anyone that plays for them, I don't know if they have any D1 talent, but I know they won some big games and barely lost some big games that kept them from dancing last year without any big names. I hope that clears up my PREDICTIONS for next year.
  19. I guess the concensus is Trey Rogers as the QB for next year? Who will they coach to be the backup? Biggs? Tutt? Either way I completely agree with all of this above. French is an amazing athlete, he made alot of things happen all year, but it was too predictable. With a passing option available at QB, it will add a new dynamic to an offense that has potential to put up some big numbers. Can't wait to read about the Mavs in the fall, but this entire district will be fun to watch. Even Pine Tree and Hallsville will be interesting Tell us why its so funny?
  20. Someone mentioned this previously... but are there too many ISDs? It seems that every small town has their own ISD. Would it be better if (JUST AN EXAMPLE), Marshall, Karnack and Waskom combined? Longview, Pine Tree, and the other smaller Longview ISDs combined? How would school funding go then? The Robin Hood fees would lessen for some of the schools in East Texas, but it would also keep that money in East Texas to the other schools. Which could do a couple of things, 1) Improve the quality of education and 2) the stability of education in East Texas. Lets face it neither one of those 2 points are anywhere near consistant enough to expect our kids to suceed at the next level without a real challenge.
  21. This is mean, but I really feel like this is the truth. If he can beat Hallsville next year and go 2-8 or 1-9 he will have had a sucessful first season at Pine Tree.
  22. Officials $75 a baseball game... 2 officials per game... 6 teams... each team gets 3 games... 2 pools of 3 teams.... top team on each pool plays for championship etc. So we have a total of 9 games. $75 x9= $675 for officials. Your entry fee is waived since you are the host. 5 teams... What would your entry fee be for 3 guaranteed games?
  23. I've seen it done. But if your tournament can't pay the officials and extra workers for the tournament with your entry and gate fees then you have no buisness hosting one.
  24. How do you enforce this? Proper documentation? Background checks? Sounds like alot of money being spent trying to save the same amount of money. And no, I do not support our tax dollars going to illegals... but I would like to see them have the option of going to Afghanistan and fighting in our wars to become citizens. Make them earn it, which IMO they already do... they do jobs we don't want to do nor would we ever want to do. They haven't been exposed to the new American disease called lazy yet...
