  1. Well, the GP acquisition of Temple , GE buying Lufkin Industries and the new Army National Guard facility here has brought in a few new folks. No recruiting rumors needed. :) Every little bit helps.
  2. Looked very good. No pads until Thursday or Friday, They picked up 10 transfers, some from the East Texas area, one from Jasper, one from the Show Me State of Missouri and one coming in from last years Mississippi 6A State Champion. Got a few players that adds to our depth.
  3. It is all about the sponsor money to run things. Hopefully they will do a better job in the stadium this year. Gone is the kickoff is sponsored by Socia's Septic Systems. Not sure about Big Nasty's side of tings.
  4. That is just plain wrong. :) Thankfully there has been some changes made on that side of the ball. No other comment from me.
  5. Lufkin and Nacogdoches had some very heated 7 on 7 competition this summer. So much so they had to cancel the last game they had scheduled together. That rivalry just got cranked back up quick.
  6. Longview will probably have the largest number of kids participating in 5A East Texas this year. I read from one of their fans on one of the forums of numbers in the 280 range. Maybe one of the Lobo faithful could confirm a number.
  7. Lobofan07, used the incorrect quote to respond, sorry, yours was not the intended.
  8. They do, not literally in the animal world but they do in the Lufkin world. One Pack Together! Have had that slogan for 70 plus years. It works well for us and that is all that matters. Don't much care what others outside think about it.
  9. The Pack offense is a simplified one for sure and hasn't change all that much the past few years, however scoring points and moving the ball has never been an issue over those years. DEFENSE has been the big problem. I believe Steven Sowell is one of the better RB in this area, very underrated IMO. Maybe not on the level of a Hasty, but very good at finding the running lanes and catching the screen. There will be a few minor changes taking place this year, making the offense a little more diversified in short yardage situations. Junior Ellis Jackson had an outstanding Spring and Spring game for the Panthers he will compliment Sowell. Lufkin has some depth at RB with Damarrie Dukes a nice speed addition, not very big but he can fly.
  10. Regardless of what some Lufkin fans may think, Trey Cumbie will do well this year and has a great supporting cast around him. He may not be considered by most the dual threat a normal spread offense employees, however, he can keep you honest enough with his feet when needed. Longview probably has the kid everyone is watching but he, like Cumbie is a big baseball player too. Cumbie, a pitcher, may be leaning toward baseball after high school and I think that is why some Lufkin fans don't think he fits and want Soph Cordell Rodgers, who is full time football, to be the QB. I disagree, I think he will have a great senior year. Rogers will get his chance in 15-16.
  11. On paper it looks like 16-5A will have a few good QB's this year and some potent offenses. Ennis, Whitehouse, Nacogdoches, Jacksonville and Lufkin should have lots of fire power. The key is who will have the D to go with those offenses. Ennis, Nacogdoches, Jacksonville and Lufkin all return their starters from last year while Whitehouse will have a new signal caller and if what he did at the State 7 on 7 is any indication, then they don't lose much from last year, Lufkin has some depth at QB with Cumbie, Rogers and Abney all able to run the Pack offense. The key is who can play defense. Besides Longview, we know they are set, who are some of the better QB in 15-5A?
  12. Cordell will get his touches occasionally from the QB position. The difference is much of the O group coming back this year have been with Cumbie since they were freshman. Everybody has expectations for Rogers, not disputing he has talent but he also has only played freshman ball. He is not a Reggie McNeal IMO, he has the same skill set and he will be the QB for Lufkin in 2015-2016.So we will see. Everyone said that Ashford Ayers was the next Reggie too, NO! Cumbie will no doubt face some pretty good counterparts in this new district, hopefully it will bring out the best in him. The quarterback position has not been the problem for Lufkin the pass 2 or 3 years, or has the offense in general. You fix that defense somehow and you have a contender IMO. We will find that out in a few weeks.
  13. Plano, Plano West and Plano East are huge schools with enrollments over 5000, yet in recent times, the past 10 years in particular, has not yielded any of these three a State Title. Plano use to rule with a few titles in the late 70's and early 80's. You would think they would be able to have 30-40 blue chippers each out of those enrollments. Winning titles is not an easy thing, it's hard work, luck, good coaching, the right bounce of the ball or right decision made in a crucial game situation. So many factors. You look at Katy and Southlake in what they accomplished at the largest classification with half the number of the Plano schools. They are like Tatum, Gilmer and Carthage in the smaller schools with huge winning traditions, kids buying into the program and great coaching . I really don't have an answer, just a perspective. Lufkin won a title in 2001, had to come from behind in the last 4 playoff games, including the title game to win. Luck, yes, determination, yes, good coaching, yes, outstanding play from one player who willed his team to win, yes. You see it takes so much to get there and win it. It is never just the one thing. Like someone said in an earlier post, if it were easy, everybody would have one, just ask Longview, their only title was in 1937 and they have been so close on three occasions since 1997. Smithson Valley went to the title game three straight years and lost. It can become frustrating to a program and it's fans because they know you only have that narrow window of opportunity to win it all. Lufkin had 4 opportunities from 2001-2005, won one and then helped start part of the Southlake legacy by losing 3 semi finals to them. Those days may have been Lufkin's only window of opportunity.
  14. Trey Cumbie does not bother me, he is a senior coming off his first start last year while losing one of his main threats in Jeffery, Coutee and Sowell were banged up toward the end of the season too. Mark was pushed to pick it up the latter part of the season and he did. Different scenario if all those components were healthy last year and Cumbie needed them because he is not going to beat you with his feet. Lots being said about Cordell Rogers and yes he has the potential to be quite good, he will help at WR and spot play at QB in certain packages. However, no time to hand the reigns over to a sophomore with the group we have coming back. Senior leadership means a lot with Cumbie IMO, but having Rogers is a plus too as a backup because he gives the defense a speed option to deal with. This opening game with Longview will be a great test for Lufkin to start the season. Rivalries are great no matter what time of the year they are played and normally Longview and Lufkin usually don't disappoint. How much Lufkin can improve on defense will be the telling story of this game and how the season may go for the Panthers. The Lufkin D has been MIA for the past 2 or 3 seasons and has bore no resemblance of what was once a great strength of the LP program. IMO there is lots on the line this season for many people on how things turn out in 2014.
  15. Lufkin has a new drone camera, better yet MSGPR who do the full video package for all Lufkin games for rebroadcast has a new toy to play with next season. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=615324668565559&set=vb.124629667635064&type=2&theater
  16. Not many from Lufkin coming in here. There just too many questions for us fans after last season. Injuries played a big part for Lufkin last year but it was also more than just that issue. Uncharted waters, dropping in class for the first time ever and certain uncertainties do exist. IMO this is one tough competitive district and this will be a huge test for the Lufkin program to see which direction they will take. Quick is in his third year, there are no more Outlaw players left, this is his team. Great 10-4 first year following Outlaws death followed up by 5-6 in 2013, so this will be the year to see if he is a program builder on his own. Still quite early for most fans to be thinking anything about HS football. Practice begins in less than 2 months, first scrimmage is 2 months from tomorrow Friday. Moving fast, can't stop the train.

  18. No T-shirts please! :):) :) I will not be able to attend, will be in SA to see the Spurs on Sunday. Could not turn down the opportunity to go. Good luck to the Panthers. To be sure, success in 7 on 7 most of the time does not translate to the 11 man playing field, as Lufkin had great success last year making it to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket but going 5-6 in the season. Just good practice for your skill guys. Would really have liked to see our new sophomore Cordell Roger in his first varsity type action as QB and WR. Hopefully will make the State Tourney if Lufkin makes the trip.
  19. Frankly, I don't know how to even talk about a game 3 months away especially when we Lufkin fans are not sure we are talking apple to apples with the Longview program anymore. Not saying those question won't be answered this year. It is just starting to sink in with our fans how much we lost when John Outlaw passed from this earth. No knock on Todd Quick, he had some big shoes to fill. Todd is a good man and football coach for Lufkin. There has been talk within the fan base that Coach Quick applied for the Huntsville AD/HC job back in January. HISD hired Rodney Southern. Can't confirm if this was ever true or not, but somebody knew something. This new school board/Superintendent working with Athletic department I think has become a little bit of an issue. It will be good to see the season get started so we can all watch some good high school football and evaluated how we think our teams will stack up for the season. Longview - Lufkin is a great rivalry and both school look forward to playing each other every year. Hopefully the Panthers can make things more competitive than they have the previous three years. Those Lobo smack downs get old after awhile, but I am sure the Lobos love it. :)
  20. Just no reason for Pack fans to get into this 3 months in advance. IMO from the way this post has been dominated by Lobo faithful your ready for the season to begin. It is hard for Lufkin fans to know which direction the program is going based on the past two years. You Longview guys think you have the best team coming up in many year. So I don't know what expectations Lufkin should have after a 5-6 season. I don't know, but it is a situation where Lufkin has everything to gain this season, if they are improved and maybe Longview to lose because they have so much talent coming through. So many factors determine a season. A rash of injuries compromised Lufkin's season last year. Just never know until you start playing in 3 months. Our fans are only concerned if Lufkin can re establish a winning program after Outlaw and with a new school board that is not as athletic friendly now. Longview with King still had their strong template in place to continue their winning system. Lufkin fans are waiting to see.
  21. My statement mentioned was "IF" Lufkin does not make the playoffs in reference to Blitzem's first post on the top 4 predicted finishers in 16-5A. He later changed his prediction. It was more of a statement made tongue in cheek. No contridiction from how I really feel about an improved Lufkin team, who did finish 5-6 last year amid several key injuries. Lufkin never had all their starters on the field at the same time in any game last year. To my Lobo friend, you know the 5-6 record last year was not the norm for Lufkin in that district. We finished either 1st or 2nd in District 8 of the 10 years we were down there. IMO Conroe, Conroe Oak Ridge, College Park or Bryan were not anything close to JT, Ennis, Whitehouse or Nacogdoches last year. Only The Woodlands and A&M Consolidated were formidable opponents as the Lobos know well. Personally I believe Lufkin will do well for themselves in 2014.
