  1. I have to eat my words. I watched both teams play early in the season and I really did not think it would be much of a contest...boy was I ever wrong This really says something about the quality of coaching and players in Carthage. Congratulations guys. Bring home the big prize for your town once again :excl: To the Springhill guys. Any team, and I do mean any team that makes it to one game away from playing for the State Championship deserves a lot of respect. Hold your heads high... you had one heck of a season
  2. Surprise, surprise. Appears North has a bonifide ACE and Turley is not as sharp as usual.
  3. Ditto: Carthage has a a great baseball tradition. Community support, a very good youth program, and previously having the same excellent high school coach (Scott Lee) there, for I believe about 20 years is the formula for success. PS I am not from Carthage but this is what i have observed from the outside looking in. Please feel free to correct me if any of the the above information is inaccurate.
  4. Thanks Joe....just kidding. I remember watching Joe Wylie in High School...he was head and shoulders above every player on the field.. and I dont mean in height. He was the best High School player that I have ever seen.
  5. What about Larry Centers, Tatum. 3 time pro bowl 95, 96, and 2001.
  6. I have seen both teams play. Both have very good coaching. I know players and parents from both and all are exceptional so i hesitate because I don't want to hurt anyones feelings. Anything can and does often happen in baseball. Both teams are there because they are GOOD. (A team doesn't make it this deep in the playoffs on luck) Having seen both teams Springhill is the clear favorite. Sorry Bulldogs, just callin it like I see it. Maybe this will give you a little extra incentive.
  7. Yes thank you...I definitely didnt mean to leave either of them out. Keep us informed as you keep rolling.
  8. Well unless I am overlooking any local teams (Longview, E. Texas area) it looks like we are down to Springhill and Overton. Both won last night and I wish you continued success for the remainder of the season. Just getting to Austin or Round Rock would really be special and to win it all, would be like a dream come true. Making memories that will last forever!!! I think I'll drive over to Nac (Pollock) and watch Overton. To the Hallsville seniors and their families. I know it was a frustrating roller coaster ride with all of the distractions this season and right now is a sad time knowing that its over. Keep your heads up...You are some exceptional young men...You played very well...for many, many years. I genuinely wish you all the best in whatever you decide to do with the rest of your life.
  9. Garrett, Telvin, Steven and the rest of the "Mean Green Machine" Play Hard, Play Smart and leave it all on the field at Pollock.
  10. Is this bash youth baseball week or something? There have been many kids that if not involved in youth sports may have gotten into a lot of mischief, and many have learned to work as a team...not the me, me, me syndrome that permeates todays society. Many adults volunteer hundreds if not thousands of hours because they care about the present and future of our youth. Is it a perfect system? NO. If you chose to be a coach at any level, expect to be second guessed and criticized..it comes with the territory. At the professional level there are many critics that make a very good living talking about coaches and players. As a coach I fully expect to make mistakes and be second guessed. Guess what...Sometimes their right. I am certainly not naive enough to think that I always am. Our High School coach is being bashed because he agreed to a one game playoff. If I was in his shoes I would have made the same decision. Hindsight is 20/20. You go with what you think is best for your team. Sometimes your right, sometimes your wrong. So goes the life of a coach. I can truly say that I have been rewarded and blessed many times over what I deserve. The positves far out weigh the negatives.
  11. Thats a lineup in itself! Some great baseball players named there, that will definitely be missed and create some big shoes to fill for those underclassmen coming up. Having the pitching return will be HUGE.
  12. PingPong ~ Please come on here and post your picture and scare these error making boys away!
  13. In baseball one can almost always look at the stats and come very close to knowing the quality of the player or the team. If the ALL Star team has been very successful. State Champions etc. You can be assured, baring injuries, that a good high school coach can take them, sharpen skills, develop position players, pitchers and be successful. An excellent fundamentally sound youth program can make a high school coach look like a genius. A poor program can get him fired. A good example of that is this years Texas High team. Dixie State Champions. (They will be 4A State Champions) or Carthage, many Dixie Championships and many UIL State Championships. Please don't discount the importance of sending the High School coach quality players.
  14. Pong...you gotta get that picture off of there. I cant even read your post w/o being eat up with the ugliness in my peripheral vision.
  15. Thanks for the reply Zone. I appreciate your sense of humor when it sounds like you may have been put through the wringer. Is any of this exacerbated by the lack of funds for uniforms and coaching staff etc? As an example, I know many larger schools could have Freshman teams if $$$ and fields were available. I havent seen a lack of funds for football. Plenty of coaches, great facilities (indoor and outdoor), full support by the local administration. I know at our place most of the improvements for the baseball facility are either donated or funded by the Booster Club and volunteer labor. About little Johnny...I would agree, many parents grand parents dont have a clue. They just want to see Johnnny playing.
  16. I am very curious about the reasoning behind this. Could you expound a little. I know one of our former baseball coaches (is still in our coaching system) who was not the Head but would have been an excellent one, didn't have any interest when the position came available several years ago. He coached my older son and he was fantastic. Great baseball background and knowledge, all of his players loved him and he was a great motivator. I know its not an easy job and you have to have thick skin...but every coaching job is that way. If it was easy anybody could do it. If you can be honest on this forum and tell me what is the issue with coaching baseball I would appreciate it. If not please send me a private message.
  17. As for your footnote quote..."success is never final, but failure can be." I couldn't disagree with you more!..."Fall down seven times... get up eight" you are only a failure if you dont stand back up and and try even harder the next time. If I were you I would remove that quote. I know that you and yours are trying to stand back up right now. This failure is not final.
  18. Boy...I could write you a book on this subject...but I will spare you the extra long disertation. The short version is: If you have a desire to coach, be a student of the game. Learn as much as you possibly can and experience will bring about constant improvement. It depends on what age group you are coaching as to the level of sophistication needed. If you dont know much, start out with the younger youth. Use very little negativity and a lot of postive re-enforcement and patient teaching. Many years ago I coached a fall ball team with one of our former High School Baseball head coaches. Every Saturday when we were playing i would hear a long litany of complaints of a lack of fundementals of his high school players that he had experienced the Friday night before. I made my mind up then and grew a passion for coaching boys baseball the right way. I and a couple of other coaches taught fundementals and situational baseball for many years. I did my best to keep the same basic team together every year. When others were going off here and yonder, I tried to keep the boys together that I thought would be playing on the varsity in my school district. All of the hard worked paid off with a couple of Dixie State Championships and two trips to the World Series..placing 5th in South Carolina and 3rd in Alabama. These are not the prevelent World Series that you here about in Select baseball...where if you got enough money...come on down and you can play. These were, all expenses paid State Champions from each state that had played a very similar format as the UIL. District, Regional, State. As to sportmanship. It is not an option. It is essential. You cant be perfect but, teach it, live it, be the example. My teams won the Sportmanship award 3 times. Give your High School coach the talent he needs to be successful. He should be honing their skills not having to teach fundementals. If you have a High School coach that is open to advice, which I did. Write him up everything and anything you know about each player. He needs to make up his own mind but this will give him/her a basic knowledge of what he has to work with. Since you have played against the same players in other towns for many years you can supply him/her with some tips there also. As to Carthage. I saw the same thing many years ago, so I asked Coach Goodwin who had won State Championships: What do you do in Carthage that makes you so succesful. The answer I got was at that time, is that Carthage is a baseball town. The school administration and the community, place a priority on baseball. (Its not that way in my town or most towns. Football brings in the $$$ so it is the King, all other sports are secondary) This was very evident back then because the Carthage High School coach was there for 20 years and had State Championships as proof of all of the above. Also many players work on their skills year round by making use of the indoor and outdoor facilities. And last but not least Practice, Practice, Practice. There is no other alternative for hard work. If you want the best results and I think all of us do, you have to work hard for it...and have some "FUN" while you are doing it. I will double your money back guarantee that you as a coach will be rewarded much more than you sacrifice. Our kids are worth it!!!
  19. FANTASTIC!!! Congratulations Carthage & Michael.
  20. You are only awaiting Texas High. Mesquite will go back to Poteet.
  21. 9 - 4 Overton. Williamson pitched a complete game win.
  22. Overton...but it wont be a sweep. They will have to play 3 to win it. Darden, Williamson, and Bearden came through last night and I believe they got more left in em where that came from. GO GREEN!!!!
