I know this topic will come and go throughout the years but its a shame that it is so discussed. I am a high school coach in a neighboring state. Im not crazy about coaches jobs being in jeopordy. Sure if a coach isn't doing his job well he or she should face consequenses of losing their job. Coaches have so much invested in kids, schools, communities and of course their own families. I am not at all bragging but I have had alot of success coaching football and track. My 1st job in Texas (assistant) was at a school that was in a no win situation. I was fired by the new incoming AD. This was extremely difficult to handle at the time. Its tough to be fired at 23 years of age when you did the best you could in a rough situation. After it happened I was 99% sure I was leaving the coaching profession. Luckily I changed states and got in a successful program. I have been fortunate enough to win 2 state titles over the last 20 years. I have been blessed to be apart of hundreds of kids lives. This has made me such a better man to apart of so many kids. lives. I know this topic hasn't got out of hand but please never use names or trash coaches that are doing the best they can. Most people never have to tell their wives and children they have to leave their home because school board members or community members get mad at a coach for whatever reason. Just my oppinion though.

Daingerfield's Davin Nelson on AD/Football Coaching Job...
oldhornet replied to Smoaky's topic in High School Sports
I think Nelson will do a good job but not hiring Horn - proven success is puzzling. -
I hate Coach Ray only stayed 1 year. He is a good one. I'm also a big fan of Coach May. Lucky for JB he was available.
-
Hope it all works out for Coach May. Great leader of kids.

What are some of your craziest coaching stories?
oldhornet replied to Mr. P's topic in High School Sports
I remember one story I read about BR was posted on Smoaky a couple years ago. I saved it. The best Coach Ray one liner I heard: When a player was in panic mode to get to practice on time, he could not find his jockstrap. He ran up to Coach Ray as he was walking out to the field, "Coach Ray, can I have a new jockstrap?" Coach Ray responded in typical Buddy Ray fashion, with his old, rough voice (not happy about the kid being late, so a little mad too!), "Son, if you did not have any feet, would you still ask your mom for new shoes?" -

any good Buddy Ray stories worth telling? -
Read this quote from Dallas Sportsday: Mathis, who was at DeSoto for eight years, added, "The community is very fond of me, and I'm very fond of the community. My kids live in DeSoto, they still go to school in DeSoto. ... I've always said those kids at DeSoto are still my kids. I love those kids. I know all the people that have been there in the youth football leagues, the AAU basketball, the track. I'm involved with everything there still. It's one of those communities that I will always call home."
