  1. I have never heard of the 3 hour rule for officials

If a kid gets hurt for 45 minutes on your JV and you can't proceed. They take that time into account too.?

What a deal. We have a staff that was put together 2 months ago and get in a half of a scrimmage before the opener.

Would have been nice to get in all the work but it is what it is now.

Marshall getting in 2 full scrimmages is huge to our bus trip to Sunnyvale and back home

There is not a three hour rule unless the chapter of officials says they will only work for three hours. The officials don't get paid for scrimmages, the chapter does. I believe the current fees are $125 for the first three hours and then $75 per hour after that. I worked a scrimmage that lasted 4 1/2 hours on Friday night....could have been longer but one team decided they were done. In Tyler we try to stay until the scrimmage ends. When you play freshman, JV, and Varsity it can be a long night for the officials, but we love what we do. Just glad the real games start this week.

  2. TASO approved the JT uniforms....

Since there was a significant rule change that takes effect this year uniform discussion is a very valid off-season topic

Surprised that they did, but glad they can wear the jerseys that they spent money to purchase.

  3. If everyone could lift up the town of Cooper it would be appreciated. Another graduate from the class of 2015 was lost to yet another fatal car wreck a few days ago by Lindale. This makes five so far in the past year & the fourth from the CHS class of 2015 lost to fatal wrecks. Please lift up this community & the families involved during this difficult time.

A life lost way too soon. He was heading home from a Football Officiating clinic in Tyler.

  4. Jmo, certainly will be borderline. I see you stated outline will not matter. I don't know how/why the rule is written, but if it's for identifying the number, some outlines are bolder than others. The John Tyler outline is very thin, while the outline on the Evadale numbers appears to be a half inch thick (dark grey w/blue numbers). The blue doesn't contrast well with the dark grey, but the half inch thick white border makes the number standout. Got a feeling this rule will be the subject of controversy several times this year.

Is the rule needed? Imo, yes, for fans, officials, and announcers. But here's a question for someone who knows the rule. If JT wears them through game 3 and nothing is said, could they incur a penalty in game four, w/different (biased?) officials?

The onus is on the officials to enforce the rule. Yes, there is a chance that one crew would enforce the rule while another would not. The different officiating chapters are supposed to get pictures of questionable jerseys and advise the members as to which jerseys are legal and which are illegal. This has been taught to the coaches at the coaching convention a couple of weeks back as well. There is even an email address where coaches can send pictures of their uniforms to inquire whether or not they are legal. The hope is that all officiating crews enforce the rule the same.

  5. Are you talking about the gray numbers? I can see those being a nightmare for guys calling the game from the press box.

Yep the numbers have to be a contrasting color...The outline does not matter....the number has to be contrasting. Hard to see from the press box and on film. NCAA changed the rule several years ago...the UIL has had a exception on the books, but it goes away this season. JT will not be the only team that won't get to use new uniforms....It will cost them a timeout each qtr if they choose to wear them. If they are out of timeouts...a five yard penalty.

  7. I would like it...but like watching my team play on Friday nights!

I am sure the SFA chapter would love to have you on Thursday nights. Remember football officiating is about more than Fridays. Every chapter actually calls more games outside of Friday than they do on Friday. Most officials make more money calling subvarsity games than they do calling varsity games as well.

  8. Just a reminder...Football Officiating is not only about Friday nights. I know many of you attend and support your favorite team each week on Friday. Our biggest need is Sub-Varsity coverage on Thursday nights...we also have some games on Monday and Tuesday. We have officials that only work sub-varsity games because of child playing on Friday or wanting to just be fan....but if you get into officiating and grow to love it, you won't want to be in the stands on Friday either. We have the best seats in the house.

See the original post for information on our meeting July 17th. Come and check it out. You might find that you look good in vertical stripes.

  9. Money is not really the issue..... there's more than enough to do everything that needs doing. It's just hard to convince those who are in control of the money to give up a lot of it at one time. Sharing the stadium with KC doesn't make things any easier to get approved. We got the video board a year or two ago, we get new lights this year. The new baseball/softball complex should be ready soon which means (hopefully) they can make a parking lot where the current one is. After that it's new bathrooms on both sides, improved seating/handrails, pressbox (ADA compliant, of course), and an updated facade at the entrance. Cue the ole Johnny Cash song.... "I got her one piece at a time..."

Is baseball no longer using Driller Park?

  10.

    Football rates per UIL......

Varsity Gross Gate Receipts 1 Game

    $150 to $250 $60

    $250 to $500 $65

    $500 to $1,000 $70

    $1,000 to $2,000 $75

    $2,000 to $3,000 $80

    $3,000 to $4,000 $85

    $4,000 to $5,000 $90

    $5,000 to $7,500 $95

    $7,500 to $10,000 $100

    $10,000 to $12,500 $105

    $12,500 to $15,000 $110

    $15,000 to $17,500 $125

    $17,500 to $20,500 $135

    Each additional $5,000 $30

    Sub-Varsity and Junior High (7th & 8th Grade) Each Game Per Official 12-minute quarters $55 10-minute quarters $50 8-minute quarters $45

NOTE: After three hours, each additional hour is $50 for all sports except football, which is $75 each additional hour.

The note at the end refers to scrimmages. That money goes to the chapter. Officials are not paid for scrimmages

  11. So the pay is a percentage of the gate?

Yes. Football is the only sport where "gate" still factors. You can google uil 1204 and see the pay for all sports in Texas

In East Texas, $200 would be an extremely high game fee. Matt Steps assertation that many guys get more than that is probably more true in the areas with a lot of large schools. Officials do get paid mileage. Some schools fudge on the gate as well.

Not a perfect solution out there, but I wish they would raise the Varsity pay and get rid of the gate. Subvarsity pay has gone up in recent years...but I would not complain if it were higher.

The officials that love the gate are the ones that only work 5A and 6A games. Plus gates can be large in the playoffs as well.

  13. Lee somehow needs to leave enough talent in the JV to get some kids some quality reps. That's been easier said than done with a varsity that's needed every key piece they could find. To me that's how to jumpstart the program and get some kids interested in having fun again and just playing football.

I agree 100% the sub-varsity teams have not been very competitive lately. Hopefully more numbers will mean more people can play at the lower levels.
