  7. 2023 ETCA HALL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED Longview, TX – Officials from the East Texas Coaches Association (ETCA) announced today the seven exceptional individuals, representing the sport of football, who will be honored during the 2023 ETCA Hall of Honor banquet. BRYAN – Dallas South Oak Cliff senior defensive lineman Billy Walton, who helped the Bears to the Class 5A- Division II state championship, is the defensive player of the year on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A all-state football team. Walton, who signed with Texas, had 105 tackles, including 34 for losses that included 20 sacks for the 13-3 Bears. Sharing offensive player of the year honors are Midlothian senior quarterback Kaden Brown and Montgomery Lake Creek sophomore running back Tyvonn Byars. Brown, who signed with South Dakota State, passed for 3,291 yards with 40 touchdowns and four interceptions and rushed for 639 yards for the 11-2 Jaguars who won their first Class 5A district title. Byars rushed for 2,346 yards with 37 touchdowns in leading the 12-1 Lions to their first 5A district title. THANKS Cease Third in a five-part series Carthage’s Cuff, Cuero’s Burks are players of the year BRYAN – Carthage senior quarterback Connor Cuff and Cuero senior linebacker Sean Burks are the players of the year on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A all-state football team. Cuff passed for 4,033 yards with 52 touchdowns and only four interceptions in leading Carthage to a 16-0 record and Division II state title. Burks had 257 tackles, 36 of them for losses. He had 16 quarterback pressures for the 13-2 Gobblers who lost to Wimberley in the Division II semifinals. Carthage’s Scott Surratt was the coach of the year. Washington, who signed with Baylor, rushed for 2,131 yards on 244 carries with 30 touchdowns in leading the 16-0 Lions to the Division I state title. Bennett had 123 tackles, 15 for loss and seven quarterback pressures for the 16-0 Tigers who won the Division I state title. Timpson’s Bussey, Shiner’s Brooks, Albany’s Wyndam are players of the year BRYAN – Timpson quarterback Terry Bussey is the offensive player of the year on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A all-state football team, while Shiner defensive back Dalton Brooks and Albany defensive back Wyatt Wyndam shared defensive player of the year honor. Bussey, who also was Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s player of the year, rushed for 2,596 yards on 184 carries (14.1 avg.) with 46 touchdowns and the junior threw for 2,177 more yards with 26 touchdowns for the 14-1 Bears who lost to Refugio in the Division I semifinals. Brooks, who signed with Texas A&M, had 120 tackles and five interceptions for the 11-3 Comanches. He also rushed for 2,530 yards with 37 TDs. Wyndam, who led Albany to the Division I state title, had 140 tackles and five interceptions for the 14-2 Lions. The junior also broke up 11 passes. Albany’s Denney Faith was the coach of the year.
