  1. This will be a tough challenge for the guy for sure. What PT has to hope for is what happened at Gilmer and Carthage - find the right guy to turn schools not known for football into powerhouses - and in both cases it came down to the right hire for head coach. Pine Tree's recent slide is directly related to the hiring back in 2005 of a certain 3A head coach who quickly found he was over his head in a 5A district, and probably one of the most competitive ones at that. Pine Tree has never recovered from that hire and the slide that he put the program in since then. Remember - the year before PT won a share of the district title. One bad hire can doom a district just like one good one (Gilmer and Carthage) can set one up for success for years. This guy may be a good coach. But still, he is coming from a lower classification (and don't tell me how 4A is a super competitive classification - 5A and 6A are the only levels that have to go through the gauntlet of DFW, Houston, and San Antonio schools to reach their respective championships). If he can quickly grasp the difference between 5A competition, and have the patience to understand that he has a 3-4 year project at BEST to get PT competitive again, then he might have a chance to be successful. I can certainly remember when Gilmer was known for nothing athletic wise and Carthage was known as a baseball school. Those two programs show that the right man can turn around the whole culture and expectations of a district. It can certainly be done at PT. Time will only tell if it will.
  2. Pine Tree beat MP 6-0 and Texas High beat Longview 5-3.
  3. I believe PT is still in contention: PT needs to win tonight against Greenville AND beat Hallsville on Saturday. MP would need to beat Texas High, which split with PT in head to head. Both teams would have the same district records at 7-7. PT has gotten some injured players back within the past week and they are a much better team than what they were in the first half and even the fist part of the second half of district. But they did dig themselves a hole.
  4. I think the main thing this guy brings is that he is coming from what I would say is a powershouse type of program in ALL sports. Lake Travis competes for district championships in all boys and girls team sports. That is unique, even in East Texas where typcially a school is a competititor in one or two team sports, but not the whole athletic program. Pine Tree has always been a competitor in basketball and baseball, but never football. The last AD tore down the basketball and baseball programs in order to try to strengthen the football program. I think the new hire will go back to re-building ALL programs at the school, similar to what was done at Lake Travis. Coaches make a difference - I can certainly remember Carthage, Henderson, and Gilmer not being too successful in football until they got the right hires. Carthage was always considered a "baseball" school - but not anymore. Longview has always been strong in football, but not so much in the other sports (other than girls basketball for many years). Is Collins the answer - who knows? But at least PT is trying something different. The last few hires were from 2A and 3A head coaches who were obviously in over their heads once they got to a very competitive 4A district. This new guy is not going to be seeing anything he has not seen before. I think this may be a great hire and that PT may have finally gotten it right, similar to what Carthage, Henderson, and Gilmer did when they hired their respective championship coaches.
  5. There is no reason why PT cannot find the right coach and become a successful football program. Gilmer and Carthage are two schools who come to mind who built very successful football programs after they found the right men to lead them. Carthage was always a baseball school and Gilmer was an easy win for everyone in football until Traylor came along. Pine Tree has been very successful in every other boys program (basketball, soccer, and baseball) so there are definitely athletes there. And I do agree that the new stadium will help greatly in recruiting a good coach. It is really a spectacular place to play a Friday night football game.
  6. So I believe that all four district teams won their 1st round series? If that is true, I wonder how many other 4A or 5A districts had that happen?
  7. PT JV 3 MP Chapel Hill 1 PT JV 8 Joaquin 2 PT JV 12 Garrison 14 PT JV 12 Linden Kildare 0 Game against Tatum tomorrow cancelled by Tatum so that they can watch their basketball team. Bummer.
  8. I don't mean to take up for the coach at Henderson, but I think the point above may be the real reason for the problem. Let's face it, Henderson in 2004-2005 was pretty much miserable in most Boys sports: Football, Basketball, and Baseball. Are ALL the boys coaches at Henderson bad coaches or maybe the classes going through HHS right now just aren't real strong as far as athletics are concerned? Things go in cycles and this situation will change. Give the coach a chance - at least 3 or 4 seasons to see what he can do. And give the kids a break - they should be out there for themselves and their teammates - not so the adults can live their lives through them.
  9. Really?! Then please expose your football knowledge and give us your nominations. And don't even mention Kilgore - I don't believe they have even won District in the past couple of years (that below average coaching staff at Texas High took care of that for two straight years). Good coaching staff, but nowhere near the level as what is at Texas High or Lufkin (or even Tyler Lee for that matter).
