  1. There are a lot of things that could be discussed ... but after examination, there were two things that jumped out. Of the 32 regions, from 2A to 5A, only three regions feature Final Fours who were ALL district champions/#1 seeds. And along those same lines, there are SEVEN Fourth Seeds that made the Final Four in their Region. And to re-visit an old adage ....
  2. They average throwing less than 10 times a game. They rush for a bit over 300 per game (and about 50-60 thru the air) QB is just short of 2000 yards rushing and has 24 TDs ... the RB is just over 1,000 yds ... One receiver has about 2/3 of all their receptions.
  3. Looks like a version modeled after Barbay's Jasper offense.
  4. ???? SWEEP = All four playoffs teams in a single district win in first round
  5. There were seven first round sweeps this year from 2A to 5A: 5A D1 = 3 (2, 11, 15) 5A D2 = 1 (3) 4A D1 = 1 (5) 4A D2 = 2 (7, 12) Oddly, there were none in 3A or 2A
  6. Regardless of what you may or may not feel, I can understand why one might make that argument ... first, Heritage was actually the best team in their district - just an internal hiccup forced them into a backup role. And one might even make the argument that Heritage is the best team in the region outside of the DOD ... it appears Huffman may challenge for that though. Navasota's district is relatively weak, being made up predominately of Houston ISD schools - and all, including Navasota, posted a mere 7-26 combined record in non-district play ... The Rattlers they were 0-4 in non-district including a 22 pt loss to Madisonville who was 2-8 ... and shutout by Sealy who finished 4th in their district ... So it is possible that someone might denote that .... however, these are playoff times - and one bad night can spoil the best laid plans and prognostications.
  7. One would think that if you score 50 a game that that would be enough ... but, of course, surrendering 38 per will eventually catch up to you. In their three losses last year they gave up 78, 59, and 48 ... and even in three of their eight wins, they gave up 49, 44, and 42 ... I assume they had to replace most of the bulbs on their scoreboard after the season.
  8. As a young coach listening to his elders, I thought that' was the reason why napkins were placed on a table in the first place.
  9. Always was ... always will be ... And I figure anybody with 185 wins oughta be listened to anytime they say sumpin.
  10. Amen, Coach ... All the Barkers, Old and New, miss you ...
  11. Don't know … but I'm kinda leaning BS. In the final year of this decade, it is apparent that this group is not representative of the Centerville teams from the earlier years of the decade. They did go undefeated in district, but it is most likely the weakest, if not one of the weakest districts in ET. Their wins came against teams that finished 0-10, 0-10, 1-9, 3-7, 4-6 (+ a recent drubbing at the hand of Alto), and 5-5. So why am I just leaning? … because I'm still trying to digest the Carlisle-Leon (*out of that same "weak" district) game, when Carlisle was probably a clear and present favorite. Good luck to both ... and may all stay safe on the field and on the road.
  12. Good question ... according to TF they lost 21 seniors, but had 22 lettermen returning ... IDK, but 43 lettermen for a school this size (enrollment 488) seems a lot. Anyway and oddly, it also says they were returning 6 offensive and 8 defensive starters from an 8-3 club (most games in a season since 2005) ... must be a story in there somewhere. With all those defensive starters returning they went from giving up 38 points a game last year to giving up 50+ points a game this year ... and offensively they scored 18 points a game this year with 6 starters coming back - last year they averaged scoring over 50 points a game. Something strange had to happen ..
  13. Looking at their stats ... their two top receivers ... #8 - 6'1 175 - 49 catches for 971 yards and 12 TDs #12 - 5'11 175 - 43 catches for 632 yards and 6 TDs
  14. In my experience of four decades in the school bizness, I have run across several districts who would accept an ounce of positive even if it comes with a pound of negative .... depends entirely on their priorities ...
  15. May be apples and oranges here but .... Crandall scores 50+ on Athens ... Crandall scores 0 vs CH ... Red Dawgs stop at 40 vs CH ... not a good sign. Athens ... be thankful it's Carthage and not Argyle. If it were, they would see to it that there weren't enough lights on the Tomato Bowl scoreboard to handle it. (Argyle 59 or more the last two years: 14; Carthage 59 or more the last two years: 2) May everyone travel safely to the Mater Bowl ... and may all kids be safe on the turf. Fair winds to both teams ...
  16. Point taken and it's a good one ... however, the numbers may mean nothing to us; but since no one - not college football or the NFL - plays a universal schedule - these numbers still get thrown around in poll and media blitzes from ESPN to game commentators ... LSU & Baylor are undefeated - are they equal? No, but they still use numbers like this in vogue to rank offenses and defenses. Texas is ranked near the bottom in passing yards allowed - it doesn't take into consideration that the secondary has been decimated by injuries and the Big 12 throws the ball all over the lot compared to other conferences ... The NCAA has a rule that to qualify for a bowl game, you must win six games ... A&M became bowl-eligible with their sixth win a couple of weeks ago - three of those wins came against Lamar, UTSA, and Texas State - hardly national powers, but they still count according to the NCAA ... Their freshman runningback, Isaac Spiller, will probably end up in the A&M record book as one of the top freshman ground gainers in Aggie history. He has 667 rushing yards right now and three 100+ yards games ... next year, what the Media Guide will not mention is that 65.8% of those yards, and the three 100+ yeard games, to this point came against Lamar, UTSA, and Texas State. In any sport, numbers are numbers regardless of who you achieve them against. That doesn't make it right in reference to competition level - but they go down in the book regardless. Is what it is. Stats are stats ... and as I learned in my Statistics class in college - If you totally believe in statistics, then you could put your feet in a frozen bucket of ice and then set your hair on fire, then you should be perfectly comfortable.
  17. The fact that they chose a pre-Morris asst to lead the program for the rest of the season certainly means they want nothing to do with anybody Morris brought in.
  18. They finished Runner-Up in '16 ... in the 4-yrs of 2013-2014-2015-2016 they were 49-4 ... last year they were 10-2 ... have no idea why the fall off ... WOW TxF shows them returning 6 off and 5 def starters this yr with a new head coach ... picked 2nd in district Opened the season with a 80-6 loss to Crane ... downhill from there ... in their ten losses they scored 6 points or less in nine of them. On defense, they averaged giving up 48 points a game ... not sure what happened to those 5 or 6 starters on both sides of the ball. UPON FURTHER REVIEW ... news sources indicate that the enrollment has fallen to less than 100 in HS and 70 in Jr High ... the state closed the Texas Challenge Academy in Sheffield which meant that the district lost about 30-40% of its funding and had to reduce its staff by almost 1/2.
  19. Could it be caused by the fact that: That the game was played on Thursday That the starting time for the game was 5:00 pm (unheard of around here) That the game was played In Andrews, With Tornillo being about 4 hours away (Shallowater's drive was less than two) Not to mention the fact that economics probably meant parents from Tornillo were less likely to be able to take a day off from work to get there.
  20. On paper, LIFE appears to be rather formidable .... Offense: Rush 72% of the time against a 28% Pass rate Points per Game: 40.6 Points per Game Scored Defense: 27.1 Points per Game Allowed Record: 7-3 with losses to FW Nolan (TAPPS 10-0), Crandall 7-3 (8-2 with Forfeit), and Midlothian Heritage Total Offense per game: 442 yds: Rushing 292 yds (@ 8.1 yards per carry); Passing 150 yds (@ 19.1 yards per catch) The Offensive Players: #5 (5'11 185lbs - Dual Threat QB) and #15 (6'2 195lbs - more of a pocket passer), both seniors, apparently split time at QB and both are very adequate; #5, the better all-around athlete, also plays a good portion at WR #5 has 896 yards passing (19.5 yds per reception; 11TDs, 5 Int; leads team), 896 yards rushing (10.0 yds per carry; 9TDs; 2nd best rusher), and 299 yards receiving (19.9 yds per catch; 2TDs; 2nd top Receiver with 15 receptions) … based on this, he averages 18.6 touches a game – which represents about 40% of the offense in terms of plays per game Leading Rusher: #1 (Senior; 6'0 200lbs) … averages 12.1 carries per game for 1306 total rushing yards at 10.8 yds per carry and 19 Tds and 5 100+yds games; he also has 7 catches on the season for 178 yds (25.4 yds per catch) and 3 Tds Leading Receiver: #17 (Junior; 6'1 160lbs) has 21 receptions for 465 yds (22.1 yds per catch) and 7 TDs
