Well its not like I watch a lot of Cowboy games anymore. I'm a draftnik more than anything (except college football) at this point. Every rating site had Mazi Smith in the first round.

First round busts every year that the rating sites were wrong on. Smith is another one.

I believe he meant Brian Mauk. I don’t know much about Brian as a coach but can tell you that having grown up around him that he is a stand up God fearing man. If his Xs and Os match his character then Harmony is in good hands.

No doubt. Coach Mauk is a fine Man. He will be a great leader and role model for the Harmony student athletes!

My point is, Russel left Harmony and they gave him a second stint and he did well. He consistently had Harmony in the playoffs. Some parents and administrators thought they had the talent to do more and they were correct.

We don’t have to beat this horse to death every time Harmony is in the news.

Harmony didn’t GIVE him a 2nd stint. They begged him to come back after the Harmony AD had gotten fired for a DWI. Thankfully, Jeff Traylor let him out of his Contract at Gilmer and Coach Russell came back. No one knows what Coach Russell would have done with the talent over the last 2 years. He didn’t get the chance. Most knew Jenkins would jump at the first chance to get out of Harmony once his kid graduated. Now, unfortunately Harmony will be back to the revolving door job it was before Russell….

^^^  That seems about right. I think they'll (again) be outmatched in the trenches, and wear down against teams with better depth, but they've got enough raw talent to hang tough in the Big XII...   barring, of course, a season-ending injury to their stars.

His schedule is a LOT easier this coming up season than it was in the Pac 12.

Does he still have the fire or is he just looking for one last payday?  He is in a great situation to succeed.  Especially if the district remains close to the same as now, not much competition except maybe Melissa but they are hamstrung by their HC.  I expect it will be LJ and SOC going at it most years in region 2 until one of the two HC’s hang it.

This post is laughable! Reminds me of one of the greatest Texans, football Coach, War Hero Bum Phillips who once famously said about the HOF coach Don Shula - and I’m paraphrasing “He could take his’n and beat yours’n and take yours’n and beat his’n!” In other words when you have a Superior Coach that is playing Chess while the other Coaches are playing Checkers, he ain’t worried about SOC or any other team they are going to match up with!!

  6. Unbelievable hire for Lovejoy. Reminds me of the quote from the old Baseball player & Coach Bobby Bragan- “You can’t hit the ball with the bat on your shoulder “. Congrats to Lovejoy for hiring one of the best high school football Coaches of all time. How many other programs are kicking their selves  for not reaching out to Dodge. Have not doubt he will have these boys competing for a State Championship soon. Hook ‘em Horns to the old Longhorns QB!!

The Washington guy would have ended up at Texas if Bama hired Sark imo. This is the year we really see what Sark is made of. He loses so much and plays a tougher schedule that he’s had. If he wins 10+ this year I’ll be sold on him, but I’m expecting more like 7 or 8 with the amount of production he’s lost.

I think you said the same thing last year and they finished the Season #3 in the Country and beat the SEC champs

I am personally not worried about the OL. I think what we think OL recruiting should look like sometimes is antiquated with the transfer portal. OL is the hardest position to project, but you don't have to project guys out of the portal. They have real film already of what they can do.

I think every serious program will take transfer portal OL every year regardless of their HS recruiting.

Not worried about the OL? Lost all 5 starters and just hired a FCS defensive coordinator? Ok. Man this is a recipe for a dumpster fire. You have a 2nd year HC that is over his head and you are about to run the SEC gauntlet. Can’t wait to see how this plays out for your Sooners. 😂😂😂😂

I would certainly hope so after 6 years. LOL

I think Penix is a great QB, don't get me wrong. But if I'm an NFL GM, that IS one thing I have to consider with some of these QB's.

    Penix - 6 years

    Nix - 6 years

Gabriel - going into year 6

Alan Bowman - Going into year 7

I understand they didn't all 'play' the full season every year (except Nix), but when most players now don't spend but 3 years before going to the draft, and you've been there for 6!, you better be able to outplay them.

Penix and Nix are ballers! You really think NFL teams will not draft them in the top 10 because they have been in College for 6 years? New age with the Portal and QB’s transferring multiple times. Penix went from a projected 3rd rounder after last year to a probable Top 10 pick by coming back this Season. You should probably expect more of this in the future.

  10. The difference in QB play was shocking. Penix made Ewers look like a JV QB. What an absolute stud. I thought the DB’s actually had pretty good coverage but Penix was absolutely dropping dimes on the long balls. One of the best bowl performances I have seen and I’m old. LOL. Texas had a hell of a Season and Sark proved to me and others were wrong about him.  They beat the SEC champion this Season and the future is very bright. Can’t wait for the spanking they will give to the Aggies this upcoming Season and look forward to another strong season and playoff appearance!!!

I actually think the same thing.  The Carthage and PG offense was better than Bellville’s offense.  Once Gilmer made 2nd half adjustments, they were able to shut Bellville down for the most part.  That didn’t happen with Carthage or PG. As far as the closeness of the game, Tate had a clear TD if Tennison doesn’t under throw him for the interception, and Gilmer ended the game on the Bellville 9.  I thought I heard someone say Bellville had punted twice all season. They punted 3 times in the second half last night.  But most importantly I thought Gilmer was the tougher, more physical team. That was definitely not the narrative before the game.

On the flip side. Belleville Defense shut out Gilmer in the 2nd half. Something that Carthage could not do. I agree Carthage offense was better but their Defense was not on the same level. I know most on here are East Texas homers but this game could have gone either way. The last play call worked out because of the extraordinary effort by #1 but was not a good call. Don’t get it twisted the Belleville defense was in position to make the tackle (4 broken tackles by #1) and then go down and kick a game winning FG. Great game but if you are going to make excuses for and underthrown pass that could have been a TD you need to point out the bone headed pass the other QB had that should have been a TD for Belleville. Be happy about your 4th championship!!!

Carthage would have beat Belleville. Gilmers QB and receivers were deadly against the Dawg secondary. Nobody was just going to run the ball on Carthage. Belleville had no passing game. Gilmer’s defense played lights out against Belleville. I doubt Belleville would have scored on Gilmer had Gilmer left a safety back. Go back and watch the game. There was no one back in the middle of the field on both TD runs of Belleville. All Gilmer secondary was close to the line of scrimmage.

I agree that Carthage probably would have beaten them. I was at the game. That’s what Slot T teams do. You bottle them up, stack the box and they pop a long run. That #5 was a stud and was fast! My point was that the Belleville Defense was playing at a State Championship level. Not sure any other Team held Gilmer scoreless for a half this season.

That's exactly what I was thinking; and truthfully, the score was closer than the actual game. Their 3 scores on busted plays, outside of that, pretty much nothing. And that's with the Bux turning ball over on downs at least twice, maybe 3 times so it definitely could of been 42-45 to 21

I don’t agree. This game could have gone either way and this was a pretty even matchup. Gilmer won the turnover battle. Belleville Defense shut out the Bucs in the 2nd half. Something Carthage couldn’t do. Gilmer ran up and down the field on Carthage. I didn’t see PG play this year but the Bellevillle defense is on a whole different level than Carthage.

Metzel has been to 3 state championships in 4 years as head coach.  Knocked out last year by the eventual champion Carthage. More importantly, he has established a culture that permeates through the program. I know everyone likes to complain about the coach, but it’s hard to argue with that kind of success.

What years were Gilmer in the SC game with Metzel? I thought this was his only appearance as a HC?

I am by no means a Gilmer fan, about as far from it as you can get. But I have been pulling for them this season because nearly everyone in East Texas was throwing them under the bus in September, including most of their own Smoaky fans. "Worst defense we've had since the 90's" I remember reading on here... and "we'll make the playoffs and probably get knocked out in the 2nd round". It was nice to see the Gilmer staff and players prove all the haters wrong by knocking off #1 in the quarterfinals and then for the ultimate irony.... they held the #1 scoring offense in the state to 32 points below their season scoring average in the title game. Helluva coaching job by Metzel and #1 is a bad, bad dude.

Great post! Coaching staff did a great job with this Team! Been a bunch of haters all year dogging out this staff. Great job Coach Metzel and staff!! Maybe the ghost of Coach Traylor is gone!

I'm sorry to say this......but IMHO the Gilmer PLAYERS won this game DESPITE the Gilmer coaching staff.....they are as dumb as rocks.  There.....I said it.  My brother concurs.

Disagree! The halftime adjustments by the Defensive staff was the difference in the game. Giving the Offensive Coaches a shout out too. The Gilmer QB was off all night and kept under throwing his receivers other than the 1 great pass to #3. Coaches went to the ground game and the Gilmer Oline took over
