  1. I find it odd that they are playing in Crockett...the stadium seating is not very large and unless major renovations have been made the locker rooms are not big or nice.
  2. The recommendation from UIL to the commissioner is that any school that allows homeschooled students to participate will be given a 20% "penalty" on their realignment numbers. That may not matter to schools at the lower end of a classification, but any that are in the middle or upper part of their division/classification would have a hard time approving the non-school participation. ex: If a school has 100 students but allows home schoolers to participate, the recommendation would make them turn in 120. The commissioner has not approved that yet, but that is the proposal.
  3. Beckville and Tatum tied in 1974...Beckville lost to Waskom 16-12 and Waskom represented the district.
  4. Is he tranferring or did he move into the district? Big difference.
  5. Who would be on the hiring committee? The librarian, band director, head of maintenance, moms and dads of upcoming players, booster club president? Most people do not have the experience to even ask appropriate questions in a coaching interview. I didn't interview a lot, but when I was before a committee I was always amazed with some of the questions that were asked that had nothing to do with the job. Let the people who will be held accountable for the supervision of the employee do the hiring then actually hold them accountable for the outcome.
  6. In the small schools that I've been a part of, the AD will find the candidates and come up with his selection. Then the high school principal (or MS principal for that campus) will interview that candidate as well to make sure they can do the job in the classroom. Typically, the superintendent will support the recommendation coming from the AD and principal and make the recommendation to the board. Now, I know not everyone has the same experiences that I've had at small schools, but the teaching aspect has always been a part of the decision because as schools get smaller in faculty size, the coaching staff plays a much bigger role in the academic classes. I have seen a few times where an inexperienced person has had to take over a sport, but it was because of the lack of applicants for the job, not just to improve football.
  7. It would have to be the third generation...the dad and 5 boys are no longer coaching.
  8. You keep applying for jobs...work on expanding your network of contacts...act professionally at all times because people are always watching...get with an AD/HFC who is part of a coaching tree...don't get frustrated if the first job takes a while...attend as many clinics as possible...meet with as many coaches as possible...attend as many events as possible so you can meet other coaches...always speak well of your current school/district/boss/community or else remain quiet...be the best assistant coach on every staff that you're on...pray for peace no matter where you end up.
  9. I guess a few Gilmer fans forgot 2014 when they scored 80+ twice and 70 in another game...if you're going to run it up you shouldn't gripe when it happens to you.
  10. How did he get a raw deal? He had his contract extended at Overton and left on his own to return to Arkansas.
  11. Which schools will be effected by today's changes to UIL Division I and 2 enrollment in both 4A and 5A?
  12. Dr. Nichols is one of the brightest lights in the superintendent world....I'd trust him with pretty much anything when it comes to school business and that includes finding a good fit for the coaching position.
  13. Sabine Pass-Hull Daisetta-Evadale-Burkeville-Deweyville-Colmesneil-West Sabine (possibly Tenaha) Tenaha-Mount Enterprise-Cushing-Overton-Cross Roads-Wortham (maybe Frost or Lovelady if Tenaha goes south) Maud-Clarksville-Bowie-Detroit-Boles-Cumby Lovelady-Iola-Snook-Somerville-Bremond-Chilton-Mart-Frost (Lovelady or Frost or both could move)
  14. I've been employed in 8 districts beginning in the 70's (and I'm still going) and I've never been in a school that had terrible conditions where admin didn't support teachers with difficult kids. I don't think every school fits your description...certainly not the ones I've been in. I don't doubt there are some that have that issue, but please don't make it out to be all public schools because I know that is not the case.
  15. There is also the scenario that the opposing team ran the score up on Thursday night (JV-JH) when there really is a chance for a huge imbalance of talent and now they are just getting pay back. Most coaches hate games that are blow outs. Once you have a game won you are looking ahead and don't want someone to get hurt in a game that is already in the win column.
  16. AT&T is awesome....Mr. Jones does a great job in putting on the games....but remember that the most important thing is that high school athletes are playing for a state championship and the metroplex schools do get an advantage when the game is played in their neighborhood every year...bigger fan base...less travel...more fans plus a lot of the top 5A-6A schools in the area play there either in playoff games or pre-season games. There is some advantage to playing in a place with which you are familiar. If the sites were rotated to the other domed stadiums then the Gulf Coast and San Antonio schools would at least have the same opportunities that Metroplex schools get every year. I don't know that there is a solution for the far west and panhandle schools...nothing out that way with a roof.
  17. What does West Sabine have? They just beat Grapeland so they can't be a slouch.

  19. The pro athletes could certainly do it outside of the school practice and it would be appreciated. To interfere with the team practice just because you are a celebrity would be counter-jproductive.
  20. I think the defenses adjusting to the spread offense makes the rare triple option (Navy) or slot t successful since they are hard to emulate in practice with backups and jvs.
  21. I fell into the trap of thinking since Refugio beat San Augustine so convincingly that they couldn't be beat...Mart dominated after the middle of the first quarter.
  22. It is true Timpson was considered very good...but this is the first year in any sport in a while that they've been that good. Muenster has been a perennial contender in multiple sports for many years...they've been up against the best and have contended well. I do think experience in big games makes a difference. Tenaha will likely still win...but I would not be shocked if it was close.
  23. I agree...but I do think there are some really solid matchups this year. I hope they are all good, close games.
  24. Just curious as to why team success should be factored in to all state teams if you are only looking at regular season, not playoff, awards? Just because a great player is surrounded by sub par players doesn't take away from his talent and an average back behind a great line can have success without being worthy of awards. I know the winning teams get publicized, but we've all seen players on bad teams who are deserving of recognition despite their unfortunate circumstances. We all know that sportswriters cannot see every team in person even in their area, much less statewide. They have to rely on coaches to send in accurate stats (!) and then try to come up with some sort of plan to decide if a RB with 1800 yards in the panhandle is better than one in SE Texas with 1790 yards.
  25. Harris Ratings is one of the oldest and best ranking systems in the state. They've been around a long, long time. Here are their picks for this week's games: 6A D1 Allen 3 pt favorites over lake Travis 6A D2 Midway 6 pt favorites over Cy-Fair 5A D1 Manvel 5 pt favorites over Highland Park 5A D2 Aledo 7 pt favorites over College Station 4A D1 Carthage 3 pt favorites over Kennedale 4A D2 WOS 1 pt favorites over Pleasant Grove 3A D1 Brock 8 pt favorites over Rockdale 3A D2 Gunter 3 pt favorites over Newton 2A D1 Refugio 3 pt favorites over Mart 2A D2 Tenaha 2 pt favorites over Muenster I have some different picks than Harris...but it is interesting to see how someone who has this background picks. Broken down by regions; Region 1 has 4 teams in Arlington, Region 2 has 6, Region 3 has 8, and Region 4 has 2. Of course, the regions vary geographically by classification and while regions 2 and 3 are generally more east and south, Rockdale, Gunter, Mart, Muenster, Cy Fair, Highland Park, Manvel, College Station, and Kennedale are really not in the region I would call East Texas.
