  1. Excellent post BlueDuckSaddle. I recall the grief Coach McFarlin took at Whitehouse yet he stood firm on his beliefs. And now all sports are better for it. And those that are saying that the only thing the athletes at Bullard are doing is lifting weights are mistaken. It is a strength and conditioning program that includes speed, quickness, drills, etc. that make a better overall athlete, regardless of the sport. Again, I will reiterate what I have written previously, give the man a chance to put in his program. If memory serves correctly, there were coaching changes (even a very successful basketball coach) at Whitehouse. Much like what is going on at Bullard. Give it 2 - 3 years and then see where the athletic programs are at Bullard.
  2. I don't know anything about Coach Cobb but I do know that Lufkin baseball has a history of sound, fundamental baseball teams. So, if Coach Cobb has been associated with that program he is at the very least coming from a good baseball program.
  3. Whether you like Coach Owens or not, it is a sad ending to a great run at Lee. Coach Owens took Lee football to the next level and high regard throughout the state. Good luck in whatever you choose to do Coach Owens.
  4. I saw that yesterday and could not believe what I was seeing. It was totally disrespectful, "bush league", and showed the lack of character of Wade and James. Dirk and the Mavs will get the last laugh and let's see if they are mocking him then!!!
  5. My goodness give the man a chance! Coach Wilson has been at Bullard one year. He inherited many of the coaches that were already in Bullard and it is not unusual for coaches to decide to go elsewhere and the new AD/Football Coach to hire the new coaches. If you review the schools Coach Wilson has coached at it is an impressive list of extremely successful programs (Southlake Carroll, Duncanville, Irving, Arlington Martin, & Arlington Sam Houston). Bullard has had one coach who has had a winning record during his tenure at Bullard. ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACHES AT BULLARD Paul Rothwell (1989-1994) 34-29-1 .539 Barry Bowman (2001-2003) 14-16-0 .467 Jim Taylor (2007-2009) 10-20-0 .333 Bo Wilson (1986-1988) 10-20-0 .333 I know Coach Wilson has brought an expectation level of success, of hard work, and drive in not only football but all the sports programs at Bullard. I have a kid about to enter 7th grade and he is so excited to play all sports that he wishes school would start tomorrow so he can begin to compete and work. Give Coach Wilson the chance to put his programs (all athletic programs, not just football) into place. I personally beleive that Bullard athletics is moving in the right direction.
  6. I agree with threejs that Pirtle at Lee has to be in the conversation. But, I think you also have to look at the talent he has to choose from every year. There have been teams in the last 5 years that went deep into the playoffs but never made it to the State Tournament. In many programs, with that kind of talent nothing less than making it to the State Tournament would be acceptable.
  7. And this is becoming the norm in Texas for new stadiums that are being built or refurbished. This does not include the indoor facilities many schools now have. It makes Rose Stadium in Tyler look antiquated. TISD is going to have to do something in the near future to keep up. The field turf at Rose Stadium is worn out and is the worst in East Texas.

    Leo Berman

Berman is an embarrassment to East Texas!!!! He is a laughing stock in Austin for sure.
  9. The Daingerfield game will be officiated by a crew from the Dallas chapter and the Carthage game will be officiated by a crew from the Ft. Worth Chapter. The Tyler chapter has been extremely successful for a "mid-sized" chapter in being selected to work State Championship games. Since 1991 the Tyler Chapter has worked 15 State Championship games including this weekend. Two each year since 2008 including this year. It is truly a tribute to the officials in the Tyler chapter and the respect they have been able to garner throughout the state. This is the breakdown by chapter for 2010: Ft. Worth 3, Tyler 2, Houston 1, Dallas 1, Corpus Christi 1, South Plains 1, Waco 1 (this does not include 6 -man games or Parochial games).
  10. The UIL and their rules continue to baffle me. I don't know the particulars in this case but in other cases I have been privy to the decisions were absurd in my opinion. How can they determine that a kid and his family have moved into a school district for athletic reasons??? And even if they did but followed the rules by moving into the district legally how can they deny a kid the ability to play? I don't recall hearing anything about a band member who moved to be in a bigger band being ruled ineligible to be in the band. The UIL says they are there for the kids and some of the rulings they come out with cause one to wonder in certain situations if this is truthful!
  11. When I was a kid (6th grade or so) relatives of Dolph Briscoe lived down the street from me. I was able to meet him and was awed as a kid meeting the Governor. He was a genuinely nice person and I still remember the day. He was one of the good guys!
  12. Berman needs to make up his mind what he wants to do!!!! Obviously, he has no intregrity and will do anything to get elected by not following through with his PROMISE to serve only two terms. I sent him an e-mail when he decided to not honor this and I got an e-mail back from him saying he would do what his constituents wanted him to do. Yea right!!! He seems to always file a bill that is the "hot topic" at the time. Can you say publicity stunt? Think for yourself. Then, he wanted to run for Governor. How did that work out for you Mr. Berman? And now you want to be the Speaker of the House? Make up your mind!!!! Not to mention his "comments" that were caught on camera on the House floor when he was not aware. Makes me wonder what he says when the cameras are off. No worry .... he has about as much of a chance of being Speaker of the House as I do of playing for the Cowboys!!!! ZILCH!
  13. I did not like the firing of Leach. Whatever people thought of him he WON! More than any other coach in Tech history. I liked the hiring of Tuberville and agree with what he said about the Big IX and the inequity of the money payout. It is not fair. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves. While he has a good track record he has yet to coach a game at Tech! The proof will be if he can win games at Tech consistently.
  14. Do the records Texas set show their strength or the mediocrity of the Big IX baseball this year? Look at all the teams at or below .500.
  15. I liked the way LOST began with Jack's eye opening and ended with Jack's eye closing. Smooth!
  16. It is time to see what Feliz can do in the closer role. How frustrating to have great pitching until you get to the 9th inning and then lose with a 2 run lead!!! 2 blown saves in less that 10 games is bad!
  17. The mention of UIL = money mongers!!! The fact is the UIL is not involved in these off-season basketball leagues and 7 on 7, both of which have become big with participation and exposure. For instance, the 7 on 7 State Tournament is now televised on FoxSouthwest. The UIL gets nothing from all of this. That is next in my opinion. The UIL will say if you want to continue these things they will want to control them and get their part of the money that is made from them. Plain and simple.
  18. Coach Thompson could get very "excited" when the Friday night lights came on. But, if you ever just sat and talked to him he was a solid person and really cared about kids. Good luck Coach Thompson.
  19. One of the few shows I watch on television other than sports!
  20. I am from Lubbock and I personally know Shannon and his family. He is an superb person who comes from a strong family and has a passion for coaching football. He will bring the knowledge of several top programs and a great attitude I think the kids in Bullard will rally around. He is an excellent choice for Bullard. Good luck Shannon.
  21. Sad day for Texas Tech athletics. And didn't I hear Craig James say he only wanted to "protect" his kid? So, as a good parent he puts his kid in a position of national scrutiny, ridicule and name-calling on blogs, and most likely in a situation where if he does want to transfer as has been reported who would want him? Great job of being a good dad Craig James!
  22. If Tech fires Leach over this I immediately become a Texas fan!!!!! Yikes!
  23. Excellent post YTDogs. All these pics prove is that franksnbeans can take some pictures and then zoom in on something that may have happened in a split second. Who knows? It also needs to be said that in NCAA rules under which Texas High School football plays, as you pointed out, it is not a foul for "hands to the face" or even the face mask. There has to be grasping and pulling of the face mask or a punch or swing for there to be a foul. Many times people get the rules they see and hear about on Sunday pro football confused with the rules for a college or high school football game. It appears that is what happened in the case of franksnbeans. And I too was at the game and there were two personal fouls called on Bushland for this kind of thing. One was a defensive face mask called on a Bushland defensive lineman (where the face mask was grasped and pulled) and another where a Bushland lineman slapped a Daingerfield lineman on the helmet from behind after being driven off the line of scrimmage. The fact of the matter is Bushland was getting their tails kicked and driven off the line every play and Bushland did not know where they were putting there hands because they were overwhelmed and just hoping to not get pancacked and trampled to the ground!!! Daingerfield was not only much faster (as many stories have stated) but also physically dominated and beat up Bushland. Football is a tough, physical game and things do happen in the trenches at times that are not seen or called. But, to call out coaches, players, teams, and officials over a few isolated pictures is totally irresponsible and uncalled for.
  24. Good luck to Coach Thompson in whatever he chooses to do. He was an intense coach on Friday nights but seemed to get the best out of the talent he had recently at Mt. Pleasant. To those who know him best, he is a good, decent person. All the best to him and his family.
  25. Both teams were very well disciplined, very well coached, and play hard every play. A tribute to both Coach Owens at Sulpher Springs and Coach Meador at Lindale. Both class acts. And kudos to Van for hosting the game. Also done first class. I would be very surprised if Van did not get several more playoff games.
