Yes, there was a time when the likes of White Oak, Sabine, Mineola, Gladewater, Tatum and smaller schools or similiar sized ones were our district opponents. And yes, we did consistently compete and win at that level. Then our small growth and the UIL's classification cuts (2008ish to 2014ish) threw us into a district with the likes of Carthage, Kilgore, Henderson, Gilmer and Chapel Hill for a few years. In that time, we absolutely couldn't compete at any level JH, JV or Varsity and the program went south in a hurry. Coaches left every 1 or 2 years because there was such a bad attitude, lack of interest or support and some kids were moving away to play football elsewhere. Mercer came in and has slowly erased all that negativity. We had kids moving in now to play for him instead of out because we didn't stand a fighting chance. He has us competing and the kids have a chance to win most weeks as opposed to "let's see if we can keep this loss under 30 points this week."

I couldn't agree more. He did a phenomenal job given what he came in to 4 years ago. He flipped the attitude, expectations and culture of a community (that had been very deflated) in the 4 years he was here. The "Build the Hill" attitude he rallied around worked well. I'm not sure everyone remembers just how bad it was before he arrived. Wins and losses do not measure the amount of success he achieved with our programs. I wish him well and believe it's a sad day for SH that he "chose" to leave. Too bad our administrative leadership wasn't able to work out a better situation to keep him here if that were a possibility.

Closer to the truth to say SH would've won your district. We played everyone closer than your district did. Congrats to Gilmer, Pitt, LE and PG.

Haven't ever seen that called and doubt I see it called again this season. If it's in fact a rule, it's the most uninforced rule in HS football!! SH band must do an exceptionally great job to have it called on them. Good job SH band for your ability to influence the game to that magnitude!!

Good job on this one Wildcats!! On to James Bowie next week.

Walks, HBP's, couple of timely E's and passed balls led to Harleton's runs. Harleton played very solid D all night, making all the routine plays, didn't walk kids and Diana couldn't get a big hit when they had the chances. Diana hit the ball harder all night, but Harleton outplayed them in the field and straight up beat them.

Rusk was called for a foul with about 1:30 or so to go. Then one Rusk player got a tech for his reaction/something he said? Then another tech was called, and then another all within about 10 seconds by the same official. I don't know what happened on the floor to provoke 3 consecutive techs being called, but it appeared Rusk kids must've have been saying something to the Ref to provoke 3 techs like that. SH make 7 of 8 Ft's and the game was pretty much over.

I did go to the game and was expecting to see a great competative match up. Fouls were posted on the clock and game was handled competently by Winona ISD...no problems there as best I could tell. It was apparent CHill coach did not want to be there Friday. Thus looked to not have his team really compete as a way of protest for "having" to play? My unofficial take on it.....

Longview New Journal: Bulldog coach Robert Sampson described his most unusual strategy this way, "We were just trying to get to the fourth quarter with nobody hurt. We got a playoff game Tuesday." Apparently risk of injuries were biggest concern for Chapel Hill on Friday...not trying to win district. :-) It worked for the coach. Not one player was hauled out on a stretcher or needed medical attention so congrats on staying healthy. I'm sure Tatum will be very banged up after actually trying in their seeding games so advantage Chapel Hill. :-)

0-0 after 1qtr SH up 5-0 at half Chapel Hill coach decided they weren't shooting tonight. They held ball entire 1st half. Guess he didn't want to play?

I bet Van isn't too excited to see they are the newest member of 4A DI Dist. of Doom. Joining that district will change your perception of how good you are quickly.
