  1. Maybe I missed something.... The fee schedule that's causing all the problems...1204....is this the same one that was set like 4 or 5 months ago? Octoberish??? If so, why is this just now being addressed. Makes more sense to do that when it first hit rather 12th hour just before first pitch. Like I said, maybe there has been another change to 1204 recently that I missed and that's what's causing all the turmoil.
  2. "Absurd" is an opinion...I said nothing about whether or not I agree....I pointed out facts according to UIL rules. And it's not you the UIL would punish...it's the sanctions against your child's school. Those come in the form of reprimands for the coach or forfeiture of wins. Make no bones about it, UIL has specific policies and sharp teeth to back them up. The kids work hard and a state championship is something to be celebrated as it provides memories for life. In eutopia, they would all receive a great ring as a reward for their accomplishment. However, in Texas, you have to win the final game AND pay for your own ring.
  3. Carthage gets hit so hard by Robin Hood they don't have the money you think they do. 2 years ago, they absorbed a $500 pay increase for teachers that was granted by the state because they were already paying $2000 over state base and didn't have to pass the raise along. They just held (or it's coming up soon) a bond election to make repairs to their schools and there's not enough money left from the previous bond to do the promised conversions of the former football locker rooms and weight rooms to accomodate cramped and over filled areas for the indoor sports. There's plenty of room, just no money to upgrade it where it can be used by girls and boys. Don't assume money flows like water in that or any other school district in these trying economic times. And, as has been previously stated by other posters.....UIL doesn't allow the purchase of rings. The $60 cap is to allow for the purchase of a letter jacket. An athlete may also receive an awardy (trophy or such) at a sports banquet but the value of that is capped at around $7 or $8. I don't know all of the booster club UIL rules but I'm sure UIL covered that as well. They aren't allowed to even feed a team after the first contest of the season. No individual can purchase a ring fora kid who's not theirs either. That's considered "pay for performance". Unless the kiddo works off the $$ it's not allowed. Gonna be a lot of lawn mowing and house painting going on in Carthage it appears!!
  4. when to they play in round 2? or is it coming down to a tie breaker halloween weekend?
  5. You heard correctly. Game was called by the officials in 4th quarter. Per UIL, game score is final. Bench emptying brawl, yes. Don't have many details other than there was friction between a couple of kids all night and on an extra point play, a fight erupted. Don't know who took first swing or what the punishment for the kiddos involved will be. Wish someone would post film footage somewhere. It was apparently quite a sight. Anyone know any more details?
  6. What's the status of Si Blackshire's knee? I've heard it's a partial tear and they are bracing and playing him anyway. Any truth to that?
  7. Coach S does have a business he's been trying to get off the ground for a couple of years as his coaching schedule would allow. He stepped down 3 years ago as a coach to devote more time to it but got talked into coming back. It wouldn't be an idea out of left field for him to step down again for same reason. Who knows if it's the real reason but definately a legitimate possibility. Has anyone every wondered........ Does there have to be a "story" behind every coach who departs their post? Sometimes, folks are just ready for a change....or to have more time with their family. Could be any number of reasons as uneventful as watching a curling match.
  8. He has posted on the game board with TGCA looking for games for Crosby. Still using his Gilmer ISD email addy for contact info. Crosby is a 4A just north east of Houston. Mystery solved.
  9. Mizuno is expensive and my girls complain they are too hot. Unless they've really gotten into the dry fit material trend..I'd steer clear. Also more expensve than most brands. We went long sleeve for 2 years...more complaints about heat and my DS's had to adjust to the new feel of passing with fabric. I bought Adidas brand and they held up very well. They do look sharp but we aren't using them this year. Under armor is skin tight. Well made but not terribly flattering on anyone not completely thin. Asics jerseys have held up over time best for me. My girls prefer a sleeveless or racer back for comfort. Spandex...2 words...Asics Baseline....very durable and every one of my girls tell me they are the most comfy they've ever worn. It's all I've bought for 3 years. Shoes...steer clear of Nike and New Balance. Our Nike's fell apart and had to be replaced less than half way through the season. NB run very narrow and the way they construct the toe, the color wears off quickly. Our first choice is Mizuno with Asics 2nd and Adidas 3rd. Your budget will like the Adidas if you are watching expenditures...least expensive and you have to set them afire and throw them off a cliff to tear them up. Comfy and lightweight also....we just got tired of the look. Hope that helps!
  10. That could be April Washburn. She was a junior high coach at Sabine at one point but has also served as a HS asst. I don't know what she is coaching presently. I do know she was scaling back because her daughter plays for White Oak. If it ends up that she is the one who got the job, would be a good pick on Sabine's part. Purely speculation though...just can't see her wanting a coaching schedule conflicting with her daughter's game schedule . Anyone out there have a name that's for certain?
  11. Jasper is a half hour closer than Crockett....guess that's an improvement
  12. Ricky was in a bad spot at Pitt...just can't compete with bball there..he will do a great job with new school Carthage coach....job xfer for hubby and one heck of a pay raise and paid for masters degree for her..good move for the family
  13. Who got the Chapel Hill job? Anyone know who's going to Pleasant Grove?
  14. Anyone know if they've hired and who it is?
  15. This will be the 2nd year for us to have 60+ girls. Tryouts have become a necessity since we only have 3 coaches. To have a 4th team, you almost need a 4th coach because that 4th team will have to go an opposite direction from the others on game nights. We used the same process as you find in better 4 or 5A programs which is fair and thorough. We do ours like Sports suggested. We keep the best of the best, regardless of grade level, on varsity. Next 12 on JV, also regardless of grade level. Final 12-14 Freshmen team. We try to move up as many promising freshmen as possible to the JV so we can keep as many as we can in the program that first year. That gives us one year to work with them at the high school level. If they still dont have it by their 10th grade year, we reasses. We cut more sophomores and juniors than freshman last year. Do no attempt cuts without full approval of your AD. You will definately need administration support. Know what you are doing, keep good records and make sure you give them a day or two of instruction in August before you start "testing" formally. It does work if you have to do it and you do it right. All 3 of our teams were undefeated district champs last season. Since it was the first year of cutting players for us, it helped that we were able to show the benefits to the program as a result. Warning, it's a heartbreaking process. Your program will be stronger but it will hurt your heart to do it.
  16. LOL I must have struck a nerve. I came home from work tonight and had this U2U waiting for me from Ace. Thought everyone else would enjoy the same chuckle I did. Pretty safe to say he's "bashing". Maybe the moderators will take it from here. Talk about sour grapes..... (exact copy and paste from AceofSpades' U2U to me) 903-693-2552 How about you call the school and schedule a conference? For a school that is so strong in its math and sciences, which SS is a teacher in if I'm not mistaken (well teacher is used loosely, since he just sends his students to the babysitter AKA computer lab), he's apparently too busy to talk to someone who played at CHS a few years ago. It's a forum sweetheart, meaning a place to voice your opinion. You get to run your ignorant mouth on the board, why not everyone else. Gah you're up there as far as idiots on this forum go. From the rest of us out here in CHS Bulldog Land....Keep up the good work Coach S. We think you're doing a great job!
  17. Someone needs to put in a call to Bill Engvall. We need one of his stupid signs for Ace. Hey buddy, until you sign the paychecks for the coaches in Carthage, keep your opinions to yourself unless they are positive and supportive of our team and coaches. If you are that concerned about playing time for someone, schedule a conference. Coach S can be reached by calling the Carthage High School main office. I hope someday someone visits your place of business then proceeds to go out in public, attack the decisions you make on your job and compare you in your 2nd year to the person with 30 years experience that you replaced. It won't matter that you are doing a great job. Their opinion that you aren't, educated or not, will be posted for all the world to see. Geez...what's the matter with people?
  18. I have no information regarding the club/team in question. My comments are general and informational only.... quackerjack is correct regarding the rules about recruitment. Prior to the release dates in November, The only thing a club can do is invite a player to tryouts...PERIOD You can't talk to them about being on your team, you can't invite them to be on a specific team and you for sure can't make a written offer before the November window opens. As a former director in attendance at the board meetings for NTR when all this was adopted about 3 years ago, I can tell you they do mean business and if you have very talented kids playing for you who were with a different club last year, you better make sure it's a clean transfer with absolutely no questions regarding your recruitment practices. Even the appearance of "pre November release date" recruitment for a specific team is subject to investigation by the region. After the release dates in November, all is fair in love, war, and recruiting. This isn't terribly public knowledge, but it's not hidden either. Directors and coaches just don't talk about it to parents...less is best. However it is on the committment paperwork a parent signs each year with the clubs...standard region form. http://ntrvolleyball.org/forms/07_08/NTR_T...m_2007_2008.pdf Congrats to the ET team who qualified for nationals! Nice to be represented from this area!
  19. Region III, 3A is held in Humble at HHS. Spectators have to pay but I don't recall the price. We have 8 coaches (4 for boys and 4 for girls)...all were given wristbands at no cost for entrance into the meet. No one ever said anything about a UIL crackdown on admissions. Horse Hockey As a former Region II 3Aperson I can tell you, the food is higher in Commerce, the tshirts cost twice as much and there's not enough housing or restaurants so you have to drive back and forth from Greenville to Commerce. If they are charging a gate fee that exceeds the state meet that needs to be addressed as well. The location and host for that meet really needs to be moved. That's been common knowledge for years.
  20. Congrats to Coach Parker and family! You will be sorely missed in Carthage. EF, you are getting a great coach and family man. Excellent choice!
  21. You might look at 3Abaseball.com when you need info....it's a great site!
  22. One word WOW  That's for you luvsoftball4ever. I am a coach, although not a softball coach, and I know Coach Terry well. He rarely reads anything on Smoaky and doesn't even have a username to post a comment on here. If you knew the real Jay Terry, you'd know he'd never stoop to the level of acknowledging, must less responding, to your comments. You have just openly accused a perfectly innocent man of not doing his job well and when that wasn't good enough you decided to publicly accuse him of violating professional ethics and confidentiality laws by discussing players/students with the general public. Just for fun I guess you thought you'd throw in the real ringer, "I've heard rumors he may be leaving". If you really cared about the girls in Carthage and how they are doing, you'd know they are in a slump and need encouragement and well wishes to finish their season as strongly as they started it. What they don't need are people like you stirring up trouble. I can only hope that my report to the powers that be at Smoaky take care of your nickname and this thread once and for all. What a disgrace. :nuke:
  23. Before you blame the AD on the weak girls vball program.....better talk to the softball coach and ask him why he won't allow his players to participate in volleyball.
