Two teams that have played in fits and starts all season... with Tenaha clinching district last week, Maud and Overton are fighting for who plays who in the postseason. 3-0 Tenaha 2-1 Overton 2-2 Timpson 1-2 Maud 0-3 Mount E. 0-4 Fruitvale Hmm, do three teams go into the postseason, or four? Because at 1-2, Maud is on the outside looking in. If they win, that's a three-way tie for second but I'm not sure how the tire-breaker would work. That would mean they beat Overton, who beat Timpson, who beat Maud, who beat Overton, who beat Timpson, who beat Maud, who beat... With a win, Overton would finish second in 11-2A and likely face Evadale in bi-district. Man, I'm not sure what'd be a neutral site for that game... Lufkin? Maud had a pretty hot start, so I don't know what happened against Timpson, but I reckon we'll have to score more than 9 points to beat them. Plus, I don't think this one's gonna come down to a last-second field goal. If Overton leads late, they'll run out the clock. If Maud leads late, they'll probably try to run it up for the sake of playoff calculations (I know I would). The Cards are usually tough at home (3-0 this season), so the Mustangs are gonna have to grab some momentum early to offset the homefield advantage. Can they do it? We'll see...

Overton vs. Normangee Wildcat Stadium, Whitehouse 7 p.m., Friday, November 14 The Mustangs are riding high after surviving their nailbiting 30-28 win over Maud, while the Panthers hope to get back on track after a shellacking by Iola. Both are programs in the midst of rebuilding. Overton is a very young team, with sophomores and freshmen that start on both sides of the ball. The Panthers have more senior starters than the Mustangs have seniors, but Overton's youngsters are actually more experienced in the post-season than Normangee's, as this is the school's third-straight playoff appearance. I don't know much about our friends from down south, but I'm certain they're not willing to settle for "one and done." Looking at their schedule, they've won and lost some close games, so I suspect they've got what it takes to play four quarters. Having taken on some tough squads in Mart and Iola, they won't be intimidated by the young Mustang upstarts. Overton is showing steady improvement since a disappointing loss to Timpson with a hard-fought loss to speedy Tenaha, a surprising rout of Mount Enterprise, then last night's gutsy performance against a determined Cardinal squad. There's a lot of excitement and confidence bubbling up, and the team seems to be showing a consistency that has eluded them for most of the season. Normangee will win if... they can make big plays on offense. Overton has a plodding, time-consuming offense. If the Panthers can force a shootout, they'll keep the Mustangs off-balance. On defense Normangee has to load the box to slow down Overton's three-headed rushing attack. Overton will win if... they don't get in 3rd and Long too often, and hold on to the dang ball. Mustang junior halfback Julian Herndon (6-2, 210lbs) can run the ball 30-40 times easy, but speedy junior Kam Hawkins and explosive sophomore Tanner Lee can break the big play. If Overton's running game gets rolling, the Panther D is gonna have a long night. Defensively the Mustangs don't have to pitch a shutout, just prevent the big play. I predict the Mustangs will control the clock on offense, bend but not break on defense. The game will be close throughout, with Overton pulling away late. The Mustangs win the battle of the kelly green teams, advancing to the next round: 33-20.

Maud at Overton 7:30 p.m. Friday Coach Roy Stadium Two teams with a lot in common, and some pretty competitive matchups in recent years. They've played for playoff position and district titles, so having something on the line is nothing new. This year it's the third and final playoff spot. The winner has a shot at the postseason. The loser starts shooting hoops. A lot in common between these two teams, including their results against common opponents. This one's too close to call. I vacillate between homer and poormouther on this'n, but, really, I think it depends on which team plays consistently for four quarters. Yeah yeah, it sounds like something John Madden might say, but it's legit. Both teams have squandered leads and given up games they should've won. The winner is gonna have to play a complete game. With fingers crossed, I think Overton takes this oneβscoring late and holding on for a hard-fought win by a narrow margin.
