The story of week 1 football for the Longview Lobos and the Lufkin Panthers as the two old rivals met for the 87th time this past Friday night at Abe Martin Stadium. It was the definition of opening week football as the two schools struggled to move the ball against either teams' defense. Both scores came on fluke plays that probably shouldn't of happened. Longview was shut out until the final play of the first half, when the Lobos were granted an extra play due to a Lufkin players' helmet coming off which stopped the clock. After fumbling the hand off, Longview's Kelvin Washington picked the ball up and scrambled 48-yards for what would end up being the only touchdown of the contest. Lufkin's three points came midway at the start of the fourth quarter. However, the play never should have happened, as the Lobos forced Lufkin back on 4th down...only for the refs to grant Lufkin an extra play and a fifth down. The three points for Lufkin ended nearly an 11-quarter scoring drought against the Lobos. At the end of the day, Longview will be much happier to work on things following a win than following a loss, and that's what they do this week after winning their 8th in a row over their southern rivals. The win marked Longview's 11th win over Lufkin in the last 12 meetings. Now Longview turns their attention to their eastern rivals, in the Marshall Mavericks. Marshall's season was off to a rough start after fumbling the opening kickoff against the Tyler Lions. However, the Mavs turned things around and rolled to a second half, 41-14 victory over Cujo. The win for Marshall over Tyler was just their second since 1998, and their largest since 1989. The two long time rivals will face off for the 114th time, the third longest series in Texas High School Football history. Longview has won the last eight meetings against Marshall, and 22 of the last 23 meetings. The lone loss for the Lobos since 2001, was a 28-25 loss at Maverick Stadium in 2015. That loss is the only loss for the Lobos at Maverick Stadium since 2000. winning 10 of the last 11 visits there. Overall, the Lobos are a dominating 17-5 at new Maverick Stadium, which opened in 1980. Friday's 7-3 victory was Longview's lowest scoring victory since defeating John Tyler 7-3 back in 1985. It was just the 5th time in the John King era that Longview had score 7 points or less in a game, which dates back to 2004. Marshall will be looking to do something on Friday that they haven't done in nearly a century. Marshall's last non-district win over the Lobos came back in 1931, when the Mavs walked away with a 14-0 victory. Longview has won 18 non-district contests between the two sense, almost coming since Marshall dropped to Class 4A in 2002. The two schools first met in 1909, when Longview and Marshall battled to a 0-0 tie at Brown Park in Marshall. The larger city of Marshall dominated in the early going, until the tides turned in the early '30s. After taking their final break in the series, in 1932, Longview has taken control of the series overall, with a 64-24-3 record against Marshall since. To continue the winning ways, Longview must protect the ball better as the Lobos, for the second consecutive season opener, fumbled the ball away three times. Longview's defense was able to force it's own turnovers in the second half with two interceptions, however two fourth down stops by Lufkin stole points from the Lobos that prevented Longview from another multiple win score over the Pack. 2. This will be third year that these two schools have met up. This only a rivalry in name only. Most of these kids have only heard stories about the games between both schools. in the first meeting Marshall showed they had a bit of run through the halls by blowing out a Cujo team everyone thought would win the game. That was the start of many more losses that season. In the same season Marshall used that win to push them into the playoffs. in the following season TH got the win in a TO game. Cujo fell short of the playoffs last season after going 6-4 on the season. this season both teams are looking to start off with a win. thoughts

But the first time since 2018, the Lobos and Mavericks will both enter the contest with undefeated records. Longview, the state’s #1 ranked team in 5A Division I according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, avoid the mass upsets we saw across the state in the opening week by a dominating 36-10 victory over the McKinney Boyd Broncos. Longview was paced by their all-everything receiver Jalen Hale, who became the first ever Lobo to catch 30 touchdowns, and another edition to the running back lore of Longview High in Taylor Tatum, who rushed for three scores entering his junior season. Three year starter Jordan Allen had his best game as a Lobo starter, throwing for two touchdowns and 201 yards in the win over Boyd. Jalen Hale’s 2nd quarter touchdown that gave him 30th career score, marked just the 12th time a Lobo had registered 30 or more touchdowns in a career. Hale is now tied for 11th all-time in Lobo history in touchdowns scored. Allen himself is moving up the history books, his two tosses for scores pushed him into a tie for 4th all-time in passing touchdowns in Lobo history. The win for Longview was the largest season opening victory, 26 points, since their 2011 victory over Marshall which finished 30-0. For Marshall, an unexpected win has hopes high as can be as they head to Lobo Stadium for the 2nd consecutive season. The Mavericks dominated old time rival Tyler High, with a 40-29 scoreline a bit deceiving. Marshall controlled the contest the entire way, rushing for over 300 yards aided by 153 from J.Q. Davis and 121 from Byrd Robinson. The 1-0 start is just third win to open a season for Marshall since 2016. Marshall enters Lobo Stadium looking to end quite a few running streaks. First, the Mavericks have not started 2-0 since 2015. A 2-0 start mark just the fifth 2-0 start for Marshall since 1997. The Mavericks also enter looking to end a series that has become completely dominated by the Lobos. Marshall has not defeated the Lobos since the 2015 season, marking a 6-game losing streak to their rival from the east. Longview, overall, has won 20 of the last 21 meetings between the two programs, with that 28-25 loss in 2015 marking the lone exception. The longest streak for the Mavericks will come in the way of the stadium they’re entering. Marshall’s last win in Lobo Stadium came back in 1998, when the Mavericks upset another #1 ranked Lobo squad at the time, 35-28 in double overtime. Since that overtime loss, the Lobos have won the last 10 meetings by an average score of 40-12, having been shutout the last 11 quarters overall. Marshall’s last score at Lobo came back in the first quarter of the 2017 match up. For Longview’s head coach John King, he enters the Marshall contest on the quest for 200. King sits at 198-44, just two wins shy of 200 in his career. King also sits 1 shy of his 85th win inside Lobo Stadium. King coach teams have recorded an 84-6 record inside Lobo Stadium, with Longview having won their last eight contests at home. Under John King, Longview is 16-2 in their home opener, with both losses coming to Tyler High. The series sits at 4th most games played in a single series in the history of Texas High School football. A series that dates back to 1909, only three series have played more with El Campo vs Bay City sitting in top spot expecting to play their 119th game this season, Denison vs Sherman just finishing their 118th edition and Cuero-Yoakum scheduled to play their 114th contest in two weeks. Early on in the series, the Mavericks dominated the series, winning 18 of the first 22 match ups leading up to 1931. After a year off from playing each other in 1932, an 18-0 win in 1933 changed the turn of the series. Since that 1933 victory, Longview has recorded an 62-24-4 series advantage but things were not as dominating for the Lobos until a 1969 victory that started a 19-year streak that still sees the Lobos riding a 43-9-1 advantage. The Lobos held the Cowboys to 107 yards on the night while rushing for 261. In 1983, Charles Smith hauled in a 46 yard reception before Joe Johnson rushed in from 10 yards out but it wasn’t enough for Longview to catch Fort Worth Eastern Hills in a 26-15 loss to the Highlanders. The loss snapped a 20-year opening game winning streak for the Lobos. In 1988, Steve Boyette rushed for three scores for the Stallions in a 28-14 North Mesquite victory over the Lobos. Renard Dixon and Mike Tidwell tallied for the Lobos, in a game Longview was held to just 88 rushing yards. In 1994, Isaiah Stoker tallied twice with Chris Butcher rushing in for another as Longview knocked off Waco 20-13 at Paul Tyson Stadium. In 2006, Chris Lacy returned a fumble 50 yards for a score tacked on with a Jazmon Moon touchdown and Zach Decker field goal to give Longview a 15-13 lead late in the 4th before West Monroe’s Don Brown rushed in from 3 yards out with 30 seconds left in the game to give the Rebels a 19-15 victory over the Lobos. Longview had held the Rebs to just 150 yards of offense on the day. In 2016, Kendrevian White rushed for four scores in a 56-7 beat down of Marshall at Maverick Stadium. The Lobos rushed for 321 yards, while holding the Mavs to 222 total. 5 different Lobos scored in total.

The 2021 season for the Longview Lobos opened similarly how the 2020 season opened for them, a crushing, blow out defeat. It was a comedy of errors as the Lobos experienced penalties, fumbles, interceptions and even a blocked punt in their 40-7 opening season loss to the state number one team in the Denton Ryan Raiders. Longview, opening their 112th season of football, suffered the 3rd worst defeat to open a campaign in the history of their program last Saturday afternoon. It was the second quarter, for the second straight season, that did them in. After the Lobos held a 7-6 advantage after one quarter, the Ryan Raiders opened things up and strolled to a 33-7 halftime lead. The two defensive scores for Denton Ryan were the first defensive scores given up by a Lobo team since 2018. It was the first time Longview has given up multiple defensive scores in the same game since 2012 vs Austin Westlake, when they gave up three. Similar to that contest, once the wheels started coming off, they really came off. Multiple times, the Lobos had the ball in scoring position only to fumble it away, including one with the Lobos fumbling on the one yard line. For this week's opponent, things went pretty similarly. Four interceptions led to the demise of the Marshall Mavericks, as they opened their season with a 23-7 defeat at New Caney on Friday night. The Mavericks are coming off a season which saw them miss the post season for the first time since 2012. It was the Mavs' lowest output to open a season since 2016, when Marshall fell 34-7 at Tyler Lee. Marshall was able to muster just 169 total yards on the night. For the two programs, it will be another year meeting on the gridiron. The 111th time, in fact, of meeting on the gridiron and the 89th season in a row. Longview and Marshall first took to the grass field back in 1909, when the two schools battled to a 0-0 tie at Brown Park in Marshall. Since that November 25th day, the Lobos and Mavericks have gone just 8 years without meeting (1913, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925 & 1932). And two of those years (1924 and 1920), the two schools had a game scheduled but were later canceled. The Mavericks controlled the series early on, up until the 1969 season, where they had a 13-game lead. The streak then started with a 17-16 Longview victory at Marshall thanks to Jimmy Hill's 34 yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining. What started was a 19-game winning streak that led all the way up to the 1988 season when the Mavs finally knocked off the Lobos, 28-0 at Lobo Stadium. However, the winning has continued to be heavily in favor of the Lobos despite two 3-game winning streak for the Mavericks. Longview is currently riding a 5-game winning streak over Marshall, and has won 19 of the previous 20 contests. Overall, since that 17-16 win back in 1969, Longview has a 43-9 record over their long time rivals to the East. Since Marshall's last win in 2015, the series has taken an even further turn to dominance for Longview. The Lobos have outscored Marshall 263 to 49 in the last five match ups, 21 of that coming last season. Even dating up to 2008, Longview had never scored 50 points in a game against the Mavs. Since scoring a 50-21 win in 2008, the Lobos now have scored 50 or more points against Marshall in six games including a series high 60 points back in 2018. For Marshall, returning to Lobo Stadium will not be a ideal to start their 2021 season, seeing as the Mavs have not won at Lobo Stadium since a 1998 victory that saw Marshall win 35-28 in double overtime. Since then, 9 consecutive defeats have come their way, with the closet game being in 2006 when the Lobos held off the Mavs, 38-35. The last 5 visits have been particularly rough for Marshall, with Longview winning by a combined score of 228 to 20, with there being three shut outs by the Lobo defense. No doubt, both teams will be looking to get on the right track of things going into Friday's 111th showdown. While it wasn't fancy, and mistakes were made, Longview still grabbed the lead against a Temple team looking for revenge from their 2019 playoff loss to the Lobos. Then came the third quarter. Anything and everything that could go wrong for Longview did and a snowball effect led to the third worst loss to opening a season in school history. The Wildcats took advantage of four turnovers, seventeen penalties, and 142 penalty yards and walked away with a 40-13 win over the Lobos. It was a disaster of a second half, the third worst in school history in fact. The loss ended a 26-game regular season winning streak, a 13-game non-district winning streak and handed Longview's it's first 2-game losing streak since the 2015-2016 season. Now Longview heads to arch rival Marshall for the 111th meeting between the two programs, the third oldest rivalry in the state of Texas. The Mavericks, season opening winners over New Caney, look to defend their home turf against Longview and rekindle the magic that say the Mavs upset the Lobos back in 2015. That 2015 win, also at Maverick Stadium, is the last time Marshall has knocked off Longview and the only time since the 2000 season. Since that 2015 loss, the Lobos have won 4-in-a-row over Marshall, including two at Maverick Stadium. Marshall has scored just 28 points in those four losses, while the Lobos have tallied 210 points. Overall, Longview has won 18 of the last 19 meetings against Marshall. Longview will head into Maverick Stadium looking to avoid their first two-game losing streak, in the same season, for the first time since 2014 when the Lobos lost to Lufkin (44-14) and John Tyler (41-25) to open the season. That was also the last time Longview has lost three consecutive games. In fact, it's so rare for the Lobos to open a season winless 2 games in that it's only happened twice since 1964 (1971 went 0-1-1 to open the season, 2014 went 0-2). Marshall, on the other hand, is looking for it's first 2-0 start since 2015, and only it's third 2-0 start since the 2010 season. Marshall will also be looking to do something it has not done in quite some time. The Mavericks have not beaten Longview in non-district play since 1931. Since their 1931 win, the Lobos are a perfect 15-0 against the Mavericks in non-district contests. Tonight will mark the 111th meeting betweeen the two schools, which sits at third for most games played in a series in the state of Texas. Marshall was extremely successful early on in the series, winning 18 of the first 22 meetings (two of the contests finished in ties). After a year of not playing each other in 1932, the Lobos and Mavericks have seen each other every year since on the gridiron for the past 88 seasons as of this year. Since that 1933 meeting, Longview has defeated Marshall more often than not, to the tune of 60-24-3. Since the 1969 season, the Lobos have completedly owned the series by a 42-9 record. Longview will be looking to continue that in a stadium that it has quite a bit of success in over the years. Since Longview's first visit to the new Maverick Stadium, Longview has aquired a 15-5 record there, including an 8-1 record in their last 9 visits. It'll be a show of two teams in different spots on Friday night, with Longview look to regain some momentum and confidence following a shocking defeat to open the season, while Marshall will be looking to continue their momentum and make some history along the way in their second home game of the season. Coming into the season, Longview's Haynes King was all the talk about this 2019 Lobo squad. After week one against Lufkin, all the talk is about how impressive the defense was. The Lobos, despite a less than stellar performance from King, relied on the defense in the fourth quarter to bring home the win and they did just that. After stopping Lufkin on a 3 and out, the Lobos fumbled a punt on their own side of the field. Two drives later, including having given up another turnover with under 3 minutes to go, the Lobo defense bowed and brought home Longview's just second win at Abe Martin Stadium since 1997. The 24-21 win improved Longview to 1-0 on the season, giving them their 4th consecutive win over their arch rival Lufkin and also extended a winning streak that stretched back to last season's 16-0 State Championship squad. Longview also improved to 99-24 in this decade, a school record for wins within a decade. With the week one victory, the Lobos now welcome another long time rival to their home opener in the Marshall Mavericks. Marshall came in extremely high in the rankings for 5A Division II, but after a two hour lightning delay, saw their season start on the wrong side of things with a 27-20 setback to the hands of the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. The Mavs turned the ball over four times in their loss, that saw the Red Raiders lead throughout. Marshall and Longview will meet for the 109th time, with the two schools having met consecutively since the 1933 season, 87 seasons ago. The Lobos, riding a three-game winning streak over the Mavericks, have dominated the series in recent years running up a 17-1 series record in the last 18 years. Overall, since 1969, the Lobos are on a 41-9 run against their rivals to the East. Early in the series, it was Marshall who dominated. From 1909 to 1931, the Mavericks held an 18-2-2 record over the Lobos. The two teams did not play in 1932. Since then, Longview has controlled things apart from one six game Marshall winning streak in the late 40s into the early 50s. Since that 1932 break, Longview has stormed over the Mavericks to the tune of 59-24-3. The last five meetings between Longview and Marshall, however, has seen historical highs for the Lobos against the Mavericks. Prior to 2014, Longview had only registered 50 or more points against the Mavericks just once in their history. Since then, the Lobos have managed 56 twice and 60 once. Longview's 60 pointer last season at Maverick Stadium, was the most points the Lobos had ever scored against the Mavericks and the most ever scored at Maverick Stadium. It's all about improving in Week 2, and the Lobos will need to continue to do that if they are to extend a number of streaks currently going. In 1985, the Lobo defense shut down Fort Worth’s Eastern Hill Highlanders to the tune of a total of 93 yards on the night. Brian Williams hauled in a 13-yard pass to get Longview on the board. Clyde Boyd and Jason Baird were the only other Lobos to tally points, as Longview rolled to a 17-0 victory at Lobo Stadium. In 1991, Dion Marion tallied three touchdowns and Charles West hauled in another as the Killeen Kangaroos passed all over the Longview Lobos, 27-7, at Lobo Stadium. John Washington was the only Lobo to tally in the season opener, hauling in a 19-yard passing touchdown. In 1996, Waco’s Joseph Montgomery rushed in from one yard out to give the Lions a 7-0 lead in the 4th quarter. Tajuan Stoker had different ideas, however, coming right back with back to back touchdowns. Adrian Lee would return a 21-yard fumble for a score to give Longview a final score victory of 23-7 at Paul Tyson Stadium. In 2002, welcoming in the #2 team in the country, the Lobos and Evangel Eagles traded blow for blow for three quarters. Evangel took a 28-21 lead into the 4th quarter, before the Lobos took off. Alex Cammack kicked a 17-yard field goal late in the 4th quarter, before Marcus Maxey picked off a David Booty pass and preserved the 31-28 victory over Evangel that pushed Longview back into the state spotlight for the first time in five years. Joel Armstrong tallied two scores, while Chris Jones and Malcolm Kelly tallied the other two touchdowns for the Lobos. In 2013, despite trailing 7-0 after one quarter to the Mavericks of Marshall, Jeremy Powell and Ja’Mycal Hasty would each tally two touchdowns to give Longview a 26-14 victory over the Mavs at Maverick Stadium in Marshall. Longview rushed for 331 yards on the day, while holding the Mavs to 85 on the ground. It was Longview’s 13th victory in a row over their rivals from the East.
  9. It's homecoming for the Mavericks. Marshall is coming off a 47-21 win over Lindale. Hallsville is coming off a 55-35 loss to Pine Tree. The Mavs had another stellar performance from QB JJ Green. He had 222 yards passing against the Eagles. Marshall had another 224 on the ground. They rolled up 484 total yards. The Marshall defense gave up 265 yards, 176 through the air. Hallsville rolled up 471 yards against Pine Tree in their loss. Only 37 yards were through the air. However, the Bobcats gave up 558 yards to Pine Tree.... 400 of them on the ground. This will mark the 19th game between the Mavs and Bobcats in a series that started in 2000 as a 5A/4A match-up that became an annual district match in 2002. Marshall holds a (13-5) edge in the series.

The Longview Lobos opened the 2018 football season with a national televised audience watching on, in the 82nd edition of their long standing rivalry with the Lufkin Panthers. Back and forth the two rivals went until the final three minutes when a loose fumble right at the 50 gave the Lobos a chance to bring home the win. And that’s exactly what junior quarterback Haynes King did. Throwing the ball up for grabs, Lobo receiver Kaden Kearbey came down with the game winning touchdown. Following an interception just two plays from scrimmage later, the Lobos sealed their win with their third straight win over the Panthers and their 6th in their last 7 meetings. Next up for the Lobos is another long standing rivalry with the rivals from the East, in the Marshall Mavericks. The 108th edition comes to Marshall’s Maverick Stadium after a solid win for the Mavericks in the 2nd year of the Claude Mathis era for the Mavericks. The Mavs traveled to Tyler to take on Tyler Lee and walked away with a comfortable 42-29 victory. The win in the opening game was Marshall’s first since 2015, and just their third opening game victory in the last decade. The two rivals will meet for the 108th time, and for the 86th consecutive season. A series dating back to 1909, the two schools have met every year since apart from 1913, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925 and 1932. The Lobos come into the game having won two in a row against the Mavs, and 16 of the previous 17 contests. Since the start of their 19-game winning streak over Marshall back in 1969, Longview has registered a 40-9 against the Mavericks. Inside Marshall’s Maverick Stadium has been just as impressive for the Lobos winning 7 of the last 8 games there, with the lone loss coming in 2015 with a 28-25 loss. Longview’s last visit, in 2016, resulted in a 56-7 victory over the Mavericks. WEEK TWO 11-6A SCHEDULE: Longview at Marshall (Maverick Stadium) Mesquite vs Grand Prairie (E.H. The two teams combined for a total of 16 first downs on this defensive day in Lobo Stadium. In 1979, Clifford Ward scored the first three touchdowns on the night and Nathan Harris added another in the 2nd quarter as Longview rolled past Dallas Thomas Jefferson, 27-6, in Lobo Stadium. The Patriots only were able to muster 155 yard on the night. In 1984, Joe Johnson tallied two touchdowns in the first quarter as the Lobos dominated the Highlanders of Fort Worth Eastern Hills, 38-14. Longview used a 31-point first half to take control of the game as four different Lobos scored on the night. In 1990, Killeen grabbed a 9-7 lead heading into the 4th quarter from Leo Buckley Stadium before Andre Davis took over. After a 61 yard rushing touchdown gave the Lobos the lead, Andre Davis got his 2nd on a 4th yard rush to seal the victory for Longview with a 21-9 win over the ‘Roos. Bobby Taylor’s 96 yard kickoff return was Longview’s only tally in the first half. In 2001, trailing the three-time defending 5A State Champions and #2 ranked Midland Lee, 17-13, heading into the 4th quarter, Lobo mania returned with a big celebration. The Lobos had not made the post season in four years and used that aggression to make their returning statement with a 20-point 4th quarter to knock off the Rebels in Lobo Stadium, 33-17. Fred Hawkins tallied all three touchdowns to seal Longview’s biggest victory in years. In 2007, Mark Johnson tallied twice and Johnny Garrett added three more insurance as the Longview Lobos dominated the Mavericks of Marshall from the get go in a 41-7 victory at Maverick Stadium. Longview produced four turnovers in the victory that saw Dacorris Ford return an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. In 2012, a week after losing senior quarterback Bivins Caraway, the Lobo special teams and defense pulled through in big ways to help push Longview past North Little Rock, 30-14. A 84-yard punt return and a 4th quarter blocked punt return for a touchdown highlighted the day for Longview.

Right with the kickoff of the 108 season of Lobo football, a kickoff return for a touchdown started the 2017 season with a bang for the Longview Lobos. The win started off what would become their 39th victory against their long time rival, Lufkin. While the Lobo offense got off to a slow start, it was kick into gear mid way through the 2nd quarter when Carter would take over the helm. Despite a drive of over 7 minutes and 17 plays for Lufkin to start the second half, the Lobo offense would continue it's dominance with Carter at the QB spot until midway through the 4th when the Lobos coughed up their only fumble on the night. By then, the Lobos had established a 28-10 lead and looked well onto the way to their first victory of the year. The Lobos, starting the season with a win for just the second time since 2012, now look towards another long time rival. From #80 against Lufkin, to #107 against Marshall. The rematch following Marshall's 2015 upset of Longview (28-25) proved to be no match up last season, as the Lobos marched all over the Mavericks in a 56-7 victory. The win marked the largest victory against Marshall in the series history for the Lobos. The win marked Longview's 15th win over the Mavs in the last 16 seasons. Tonight, the Lobos will look to win their 60th overall game against the Mavericks which would be the first time in Longview history that Lobos have recorded at least 60 wins against a single opponent. Marshall, with a fresh new coaching staff following Harper's move to Duncanville, started the season off with a 29-27 loss against Chance Amie and the Robert E Lee Rebels. Claude Mathis takes over for the Mavs in their first road game under his helm but Mathis is definitely no stranger to Longview football after two seasons being district mates when he was the head coach at DeSoto. Both contests went Longview's way as the Lobos upset the Eagles in 2010, 38-35, and held on for a strong defensive victory in 2011, 23-21. This year's edition marks Marshall's 20th visit all-time to Longview's Lobo Stadium (the new stadium). Since their shocking double overtime victory over the Lobos in 1998, 35-28, Marshall has not beaten the Lobos at the stadium running a record of 7 consecutive defeats. The Lobo defense held the Broncos to just 57 total yards on the night. In 1967, Ralph Blount’s field goal and Rodney Hill’s 2nd quarter touchdown reception was all Longview needed to a 10-7 victory over Woodrow Wilson. In 1972, Mick Mock tallied the only touchdown the Lobos needed but Calvin Portley, Chuck Boyd and Charles Robey added the insurance markers in a 27-0 Lobo win over Dallas Jesuit. In 1978, five different Lobos scored for the Lobos, highlighted by a 78 yard interception return by Ed Jackson, as the Lobos knocked off Dallas Thomas Jefferson 34-0 at Cobb Stadium. In 1989, the Lobos fell behind 12-0 at Mesquite Memorial Stadium against North Mesquite before a huge 4th quarter comeback spurred by two Selwyn Broughton touchdowns in a 15-12 shocker over the Stallions. In 1995, after a scoreless first half, the Lobos marched out to a 10-0 lead behind Isiah Stoker’s 3rd quarter marker before holding on to knock off the Waco Lions for the 7th straight time, 17-7. In 2000, fresh off their 2nd straight State Championship, Cedric Benson notched four touchdowns as the Midland Lee Rebels opened the season with a 40-7 win over Longview at Memorial Stadium in Midland. In 2006, the Lobos grabbed a 38-21 lead before a late 4th quarter comeback by the Mavericks pushed the game to the brink with a last second hail mary falling just short. Jazmon Moon tallied four touchdowns in the 38-35 victory over Marshall.
  12. MARSHALL MAVERICKS Vs. TYLER LEE RED RAIDERS August 26th, TMF Tyler Rose Stadium, 7:30 pm The last time Marshall and Tyler Lee met on the football field during the regular season..... gas was $1.46 a gallon brownouts were rolling across California and the terror attacks on 9/11 dominated the news and people's minds as a new era dawned on our country. October 12, 2001, was the last time the two long-time rivals met in a district game. Following that season, Marshall and Nacogdoches were realigned into (then) 4A, forever changing the landscape of East Texas football. A rivalry that dated back to 1960 had an unceremonious ending in 2001. Since 2001, both programs have seen both all-time highs and all-time lows. Tyler went on to win a 5A Div I state championship in 2004, while Marshall had back-to-back state title appearances in 2004 and 2005. Both have had plenty of other playoff successes since their last meeting in 2001. However... both have recently seen historic lows. Tyler Lee's fall from grace was punctuated in 2010 when they went (2-9), prompting the departure of Mike Owens, who had lead the Raiders to the aforementioned state title just 5 years prior. The struggles of 2010 continued in 2011 when Lee went (1-10). 2012 was no better with a mark of (1-9). 2013: (4-6) 2014: (5-6) 2015: (5-6) Since 2010, the Red Raiders have gone a combined (18-46) with their last playoff win coming in 2009. Similarly..... Marshall fell on hard times in 2011 when they went (2-8) followed by a dismal (1-9) in 2012. It was the first one-win season for the Mavs since 1971. They narrowly escaped their first winless season since 1963 (0-9-1) thanks to a 49-29 win over Pine Tree. Enter MHS alumni Clint Harper, who has helped turned the Mavericks' fortunes around with three straight playoff appearances since 2013, a shared district championship with Longview and Texas High, and a 5A regional semifinals finish last season at (11-2). Marshall leads the all-time series Vs. Tyler Lee (23-18-1). Lee won the final 5 games from 1997-2001. Marshall last beat Lee in 1996 when the Mavs finished (10-0) in the regular season. -------------------- Red Raiders last Season: (5-5, 4-3) Tyler Lee will be breaking in another new coach this year with Clayton George taking over the reigns of the program. He came to Tyler from one of the most decorated schools in the state, Southlake Carroll. He spent 10 years at SLC as the OC, where the Dragons amassed a record of (115-21). He will come to town with an offense that only has 3 returning starters. Luckily for him..... one of them is QB Chance Aimie. He replaced Mr. All-World QB Zach Hall last season when a knee injury Vs. JT ended his season. Aimie started just 4 games last year and amassed nearly 1,000 yards passing and another 400 with his legs. WR K. Davis may prove to be one of his favorite targets. The offensive line may be a concern for Tyler Lee as they will be very inexperienced. The biggest concern for Lee may be needed improvement on their defense from last season. The Red Raiders gave up points in BIG BUSHELS last season: 66- To Garland Sachse (Loss) 65- To Rockwall (Loss) 59- To Fossil Ridge (Loss) 54- To Rowlett (Loss) 54- To Garland Lakeview Centennial (Win) 52- To Lufkin (Loss) 47- To Garland (Win) 38- To John Tyler (win) 35- To Naaman Forrest (Win) 21- To North Garland (Win) That's average of surrendering 49.1 PPG. Luckily for REL, they had an offense that was scoring points at almost an equal clip at 41.7 PPG. ----------- Mavericks last Season: (11-2, 6-1 District Tri-champions) Coach Harper enters his fourth season with the Mavericks in what may be the season he has the highest expectations placed on his team. That's a tall order knowing Marshall will start the season with a quarterback not named Justin Hart for the first time since 2011. Four-year starter Hart graduated and has since taken his talents to NCAA Div III ETBU. When Hart went down in week 7 last season, Mr. Everything Cameron Haller stepped up to QB and lead the Mavericks to the third round of the playoffs, going (3-2) under center. http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/cameron-haller/RtS-z696EeO00gAmVebEWg/videos.htm Enter Junior QB Hunter Herrington in 2016, who is expected to do big things as he soaked up the offense last season on the sidelines learning from both Hart and Haller. Hobbled by his own injury last season, he spent the latter portion learning the offense. He had a stellar summer of 7 on 7 play..... but inexperience at the varsity level will be a concern. Meanwhile..... Cameron Haller is expected to return to the position(s) in which not only he.... but the entire Mav offense shone brightest. He may line up as a WR, perhaps TE, or even the backfield. Let's not forget in the wildcat formations as well. Like last season, he could be a DC's nightmare. Concern for the Mavs? Offensive line.... they will be young, but not completely inexperienced thanks to some late-game action last season in some blowout wins. However, they will have to mature quickly for the likes of Lee, Longview, Corsicana, and Ouachita in the first 4 weeks of the season. The Mav defense returns no less than 8 starters from last year on a unit that was peppered with numerous sophomores. While they played well enough last season to win several games.... their youth betrayed them at times, giving up lots of real estate. Although they improved as the season progressed.... they were exposed in the final game of the season in a big loss to Frisco Lone Star. The defense will need to do some work at the beginning of the season as a new QB works on getting his legs under him. ---------- Coach Harper is (41-21) on his career as a HC. He is (21-15) at Marshall since 2013 with three straight playoff seasons; advancing in 2014 and 2015. He lead the Mavs to their first district title since 2005 last season (shared). Last year's region semi-finals was the deepest playoff run for the Mavs since 2009's region semi-finals appearance. The Mavs have advanced to at least the region semifinals five times since 2004. Tyler Lee's last district championship came in 2009 when they shared it with JT and DeSoto. That was also the last year Lee won a playoff game. ---------- Rose Stadium has been somewhat of a house of horrors for Marshall in recent memory, but there have been some bright spots intermingled with the doom and gloom 2014: lost 2nd round playoff game to South Oak Cliff 55-35 2011: lost district game to John Tyler 56-35 2009: WIN Area Playoff game over Corsicana 34-4 2007 WIN Bi-District Playoff game over Texas High 31-27 2007: lost region semifinal game to McKinney Boyd 21-14 2005: lost 4A Div I State Championship to Highland Park (score blocked from my memory) 2001: lost district game to Tyler Lee 35-10 2000: lost district game to John Tyler 28-14 1999: lost district game to Tyler Lee 30-10 1998: WIN district game over John Tyler 28-14 1997: lost district game to Tyler Lee 24-21 1996: WIN district game over John Tyler 24-17 Marshall is (4-8) at Rose Stadium in the last 20 years. Including (3-3) in the playoffs and (1-5) in district play. -------------- Marshall Vs. Tyler Lee tid bits: 1. Marshall and Lee first met in 1958 in JV only games for the first 2 seasons. The first varsity game between them was in 1960. Marshall won that game 36-6. 2. Tyler Lee's first win over Marshall came in 1963 when the "Rebels" beat the Mavs 32-8. 3, The Longest winning streak Marshall had Vs. Lee was 6 consecutive from 1979-1984. 4. The longest losing streak Marshall had to Lee was 5 consecutive from 1997-2001. 5. The lowest scoring games in the series was 6-0, each winning one of them. 1975 (Marshall) and 1967 (REL). 6. The Highest scoring game in the series was a 57-50 thriller in 1992 won by Lee on a 52 yard TD pass with just seconds remaining on the clock. 7. The closest game in the series was a 30-30 tie in 1991. While most of the current players were toddlers the last time Lee and Marshall played a regular season game, they have scrimmaged each other the last three seasons.... so there is some familiarity. 2015- Marshall beat Lee 28-14 2014- The squads tied 28-28 2013- The squads tied 21-21 2012- Lee beat Marshall 21-0
  13. Teams have started work outs and such so time to move from pre-season talk to regular season/post season talk. The Lobos and Mavericks meet on the gridiron for the 105th time, with Marshall’s Maverick Stadium the setting for this potential 15-5A District Championship match up. The Lobos, fresh off their first shutout since 2012 in a 51-0 romping of Greenville, head into Maverick Stadium full of confidence after back to back 51+ point margin victories to open district play. One of those 51+ point margin victories came against crosstown rival Pine Tree as the Lobos defeated Pine Tree two weeks ago 61-6 in Lobo Stadium. That same team, took Marshall down to the wire in last week’s second district game for the Mavs as Marshall struggled all night long before pulling out a 35-28 nail biter. The win improved Marshall to 2-0 in district play, and 5-0 overall for the first time since 1996. The Lobos and Mavericks will meet for the 105th time this coming Friday, and for the 83rd consecutive season…dating back to the 1933 season. And while the series is one of the longest in the state of Texas, the Lobos and Mavericks haven’t exactly been the closest of competitors. In 1968, the Mavericks defeated Longview 20-3 in Lobo Stadium…the following season began a streak that saw the Lobos defeated Marshall 19 consecutive seasons. Following 12 seasons of battling back and forth, the Lobos currently are trying to match the previous streak..holding a 14-game winning streak over the Mavericks that dates back to the 2001 season. During the streak, the Lobos and Mavericks have battled to just four contests that have been decided by two scores or less. Last season, the Lobos defeated Marshall 56-13 inside Lobo Stadium. Marshall hasn’t scored more than three scores on Longview since a 30 point night in 2009 during a 47-30 loss. The 56 points were the most a Longview team has ever scored on a Marshall squad, and just the second time the Lobos have scored 50 on Marshall. Marshall opened the series with an 18-2-2 series lead in the first 22 games from 1909 to 1931. After taking a year off in 1932, the Lobos and Mavs have met every year (82 seasons). In those games, Longview is 56-23-3. Since the original streak started in 1969, the Lobos are 37-8-0 against Marshall. The Lobos also returned to Marshall for the first time since a 26-14 victory over the Mavs in Maverick Stadium. In the new Maverick Stadium, Longview has found it almost as a home away from home…sporting a 13-4-0 record with the first match up happening in 1981 there. The Lobos haven’t lost in Marshall since 2000, where they fell 38-28. Regardless of past games, this week’s game has potential to be for the 15-5A district championship. Marshall has not won a district championship since 2005, while Longview is looking for their 11th district championship in 12 seasons under John King. Longview was rewarded with a 2-0 victory. In 1931, Shreveport Byrd humiliated Longview by a 50-0 scoreline. In 1936, Longview knocked off Fort Worth Polytechnic 18-0 inside Lobo Stadium. In 1942, Robert Crowley’s three touchdown night spearheaded Longview to a 42-7 victory over Athens at Lobo Stadium. John Dunaway, Bill Hughes and J.T. Jeffress also added scores for the Lobos. In 1953, Robert Bayliss’ 20 yard touchdown reception from George Myers on the first play of the fourth quarter that ensured a 27-20 victory for the Lobos over Palestine inside Lobo Stadium. George Myers rushed for two touchdowns on the night as the quarterback threw for a then school record 298 yards. In 1959, a last second comeback attempt from Longview fell short as the Lobos fell to West Monroe in Rebel Stadium, 13-7. Douglas Bruner was Longview’s only score on the night on a 33 yard pass in the 4th quarter. The Lobos turned the ball over 5 times on the night in a game that saw Kim Flint’s pass intercepted with 28 seconds remaining that ended any chance of a comeback. In 1964, Longview fell to Houston Smiley, 21-18, in their first ever visit to Jones-Cowart Stadium. In 1970, James Lomax rushed for two touchdowns that saw Jeb Blount added a field goal in the 2nd and David Hiett score in the 3rd quarter as the Lobos rolled over John Tyler 27-8 at Lobo Stadium. Longview’s defense held John Tyler to just 27 yards on the night, including just 5 rushing yards, and grab two safeties in the same game. In 1981, Kenny Frazier rushed for two touchdowns in the first half inside Abe Martin Stadium in the only two scores of the game as Longview knocked off Lufkin, 12-0. In 1987, Ray Allison ran for three touchdowns and Eric Faggett added on two as well as the Lobos rushed for 308 yards rushing on the night in a 50-0 defeat of Nacogdoches. In 1992, LaMarcus White rushed for a 70 yard touchdown in the first quarter and Devin Lawson caught a 40 yard pass in the 3rd as the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 14-6 at Lobo Stadium. In 1998, in arguably the biggest match up between the old foes, the #1 Lobos and #4 Mavericks met at Lobo Stadium in a game that still is talked about to this day. Fred Talley’s 226 yard rushing night wasn’t enough to slow down Kendrick Starling who finished the night with 157 yards receiving behind two touchdowns as well as a kickoff return for a score, as the Mavericks upset Longview 35-28 in double overtime. In 2009, Tyler McCray rushed for three touchdowns behind a 453 total yard night for the Lobo offense in a 44-0 thrashing of Mount Pleasant. It was Longview’s first ever visit to Sam Parker Field and first visit to MP in 81 years.
