  1. 2024-2026 UIL REALIGNMENT DAY finds a couple new schools added to last realignment's District 11: Grapeland & Lovelady. We lose Carlisle who bumped back up to D1. District 11-2A (D2): Alto Cushing Grapeland Lovelady Mount Enterprise Overton Tenaha Should be a competitive district! Maybe only second to District 10.....in Region 3 anyway. When you look at the map, seems the UIL got East Texas right.
  2. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to The Reservation in Carlisle to take on the Indians in the last district game of the season; kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. A win by Carlisle will secure the 4th seed playoff spot unless Cushing upsets Mount Enterprise by 8+ and then the Indians could be knocked out altogether. This year has been a struggle for both squads, but especially the Yellowjackets as we have one more opportunity to salvage the season with a win. With only 2 returning starters on offense and 4 on defense and a handful of freshmen contributing, the Jackets are 0-9 for the first time since 1977. A loss Friday would be the first winless season since that same year. The Jackets are young, playing for pride, and hungry for a win. The loss last week was the first to Cushing since 1992, but the Jackets didn't give up. Down 28 to 6 in the second quarter and with starting QB Davis playing with a broken leg (hairline fracture), the Mean Sting battled back to pull within a touchdown to make it a game, but eventually fell 55-39. Carlisle, who returns 6 starters on offense and 8 on defense fell to undefeated rival Overton 38-14 for the first time since 2005. The Indians have had to replace several linemen from last season and learn a new system under first-year head Coach Sharp. The Indians have 3 wins: Harleton (38-25), Lone Oak (21-14), and Cushing (49-48) and have shown that they can score points in district losses having put up 60 on Mount Enterprise and 30 on Tenaha. Last year's meeting between Alto-Carlisle was a barn burner and one I will remember forever as the Jackets scored in come-from-behind fashion in the last seconds of the game (my son's last TD!) to topple the state ranked and then undefeated Indians 36-31. Alto and Carlisle have played a total of 16 times with Alto leading the series 8-6-2. Since 2015 the teams have alternated wins every year. Carlisle's turn, but I think we should have it this time. We need it more! lol The series: ALTO VS. 3. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Mount Enterprise this Friday to take on the Wildcats; kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. The Jackets and Wildcats have only played three times in football: 1978, 1979, and 2022 all Alto wins. Mount Enterprise returns 20 lettermen with 2 lost to graduation; they have 9 starters back on both sides of the ball. Both teams had a bye last week. The Jackets lost to Groveton the week before 44-20 while the Wildcats soundly defeated All Saints 60-8. The young Jackets are still looking for that first win of a season that has been pretty harsh thus far. Is this the week? ALTO VS. 4. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Tenaha Tigers at Cam'ron Matthews Field at Jacket Stadium Friday; kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. Tenaha returns 20 lettermen with 4 lost to graduation; they have 8 starters back on offense while 9 return on defense. The Tigers began district play with a win over Carlisle last Friday; the Jackets fell to Mount Enterprise for the first time ever. The Alto-Tenaha series goes all the way back to 1929 but have only actually played a total of 15 times with Alto leading 10-5. The Jackets have started the last two games with 14-0 leads but have not managed to finish; young group trying to find their way. My father-in-law always says the next best thing to playing and winning is playing and losing. 5. The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D2) will host the West Sabine Tigers (11-2A D1) this Friday at 7:30 in the home opener for Alto. The Jackets are coming off a tough loss at Shelbyville 43-12 while the Tigers fell to Tenaha 21-20. The Jackets are young and it shows. West Sabine has 8 returning starters on offense with 7 on defense, 19 lettermen returning with 5 lost to graduation; they are picked by Dave Campbell's Texas Football to place 5th in their district. The Tigers gave Tenaha a battle coming up just short of the win at home. The Jackets continue to show improvement from the scrimmages but with the schedule coming, need to grow up fast. Alto leads this series with West Sabine 4-1. Both teams are looking for that first win. Who gets it? ALTO VS. 6. The Alto Yellowjackets (District 11-2A D2) will travel to Shelbyville (District 11-2A D1) to take on the Dragons in the season opener Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Jackets fell to the Dragons in a back-and-forth game last year where each team scored the same number of TDs but the Jackets failed to convert on a couple 2-point conversion attempts. Shelbyville is picked 4th in their district by Dave Campbell's Texas Football and return 9 offensive and 10 defensive starters; they have 18 lettermen returning with only 4 graduating. Alto is picked to finish 2nd in the district and return just 2 starters on offense and 4 on defense; the Mean Sting returns 12 lettermen with 12 lost to graduation. The Jackets have held their own on defense in both scrimmages against highly touted Beckville and Troup but have not scored a TD in either scrimmage. Lots of potential with seasoned senior QB Davis leading but the line is going to have to grow up fast, as only one returns from last season (Hernandez) and the others are basically new to varsity play in sophomores and juniors. The Jackets lead the all-time series with Shelbyville 18-4. Who starts 1-0? ALTO VS. 7. The Alto Yellowjackets travel to Tenaha this Saturday to take on the Tigers. It’s Tenaha’s homecoming and kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Jackets and Tigers go way back….to 1929….but have only played 14 times! It was 2015 the last time these two met, a 52-7 Alto win at home; Alto leads the series 10-4. The Jackets defeated Mount Enterprise on Friday 46-34 struggling a bit defensively while the Tigers were blanked by Carlisle 48-0. Tenaha started the season 2-0 but has lost an uncharacteristic 4 in a row. Their 13-game district win streak was snapped by the Indians and this is the first time since 2019 the Tigers have lost 4 in a row. 8. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Carlisle Indians this THURSDAY night at Cam’ron Matthews Field at Jacket Stadium; kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. It is Senior Night and a special one at that. The Jackets and Indians will battle for the district championship! Carlisle is undefeated on the season and because of the Tenaha loss to Cushing, the winner of this game is the district champ. Carlisle looks to keep their season perfect while heading as the one seed to the playoffs. The Jackets are playing for pride, family, community, and their brothers on the field. Alto and Carlisle have played a total of 15 times with Alto leading the series 7-6-2. The last game played between the two was in 2020 with a 12-0 Carlisle win. The Jackets’ won the year before 29-7. Covid won in 2021 as the game was cancelled last season. There is no streak because since 2015 the teams have alternated wins every year. The Mean Sting defeated Cushing in a game that was called at the half because of weather 30-6 Friday while the Indians whipped Overton 70-10 on their Senior Night Thursday. UIL decision or not, it’s the last game for my son (#21) to play at Jacket Stadium. Factor in the rest, and it has been excruciating. I am happy that we get to go out with a chance to compete for a district championship. Gonna be a battle Friday night! Everyone knows we are the underdog. Carlisle has had a phenomenal year and total respect for their team. They are putting up huge numbers. Since 2015 when Cam’ron Matthews passed away during our game, we have shared a bond. I will be the biggest Carlisle fan through the playoffs and wish them all the best. I hope we can muster enough to make this a real game Friday night. We will have to minimize mistakes, score when we have the ball, and try to get a few stops. It will be emotional. I know our boys will lay it all on the line and play with heart; it’s who they are. The season has been dedicated to #9 and to finish with a win would mean everything. Good luck to both teams!
  9. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Cushing this Friday to take on the Bearkats; kickoff has been moved up to 5:00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE. The Jackets and Bearkats have played a total of 24 times with Alto leading the series 20-4. The last game played between the two was in 2019 with a 61-0 Alto win. The Bearkats’ last win in the series was 24-23 in 1992. The Mean Sting hung on to defeat Overton 32-29 Friday while the Bearkats defeated Tenaha 23-20 with a field goal as time expired. Both squads are 2-1 in district. I expect a hard-fought game between both squads. I think our offense will be fine but our defense is going to have to tighten up. Should help getting two (possibly three) of our starters back. Our 3 losses are by a total of 13 points so I know we have it in us. Just have to execute! We know we are in for a fight. Cushing is solid and has proven that this season. Looking forward to this game!
  10. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Overton Mustangs this Friday; kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Jackets and Mustangs have been district mates twice: 1978/1979 and 2008/2009 with the Jackets winning all 4 contests. They played a playoff game way back in 1937 with the Mustangs winning 27-0. Other than that, a couple scrimmages in 2018 and 2019. The Jackets lost to Tenaha in a heartbreaker on Saturday 43-42 while the Mustangs defeated Mt. Enterprise 47-38 Friday. Both squads are 1-1 in district. Results for the 2022 season thus far: Shelbyville 48 - Alto 44 Alto 48 - West Sabine 22 Alto 22 - San Augustine 8 Garrison 28 - Alto 20 Alto 32 - Groveton 20 Alto 46 - Mount Enterprise 34 Tenaha 43 - Alto 42 Quinlan Boles 27 - Overton 12 Overton 45 - All Saints 6 Simms Bowie 47 - Overton 28 Colmesneil 36 - Overton 25 Linden-Kildare 28 - Overton 26 Cushing 22 - Overton 15 (OT) Overton 47 - Mt. 11. The Alto Yellowjackets will renew their rivalry with the Garrison Bulldogs when they travel to Garrison this Friday; kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. The Jackets and Bulldogs last met in 2019 in Garrison with Alto winning 26-7. This will be the 45th time the teams have met with Garrison holding the series record 24-18-2. The Jackets defeated San Augustine on Saturday 22-8 while the Bulldogs fell (surprisingly) to Warren 25-22. Schedules and results for the 2022 season thus far: Shelbyville 48 - Alto 44 Alto 48 - West Sabine 22 Alto 22 - San Augustine 8 Garrison 35 - Hugh Springs 30 Garrison 28 - Arp 21 Warren 25 - Garrison 22 ALTO-GARRISON SERIES All-Time Record for Alto: 600 wins | 382 losses | 34 ties | 1,016 total games All-Time Record for Garrison: 548 wins | 286 losses | 13 ties | 847 total games All-Time Series Record: Garrison - 24 wins | Alto - 18 wins | 2 ties Garrison's longest winning streak vs. Alto: 5 wins in a row (1966-1970 | 1976-1987) Alto's longest winning streak vs. Garrison: 9 wins in a row (1988-1998) Current streak: Alto won 26-7 in 2019; haven’t played since. I think I am missing one year. In 1973, there was a 6-6 tie, but I can’t find any record of the year before or after 1973. We had to have played twice because of realignment. This Friday should be a good test! Both teams are 2-1. Who moves to 3-1?
  12. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Pineland to take on the West Sabine Tigers Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Jackets fell by 4 to Shelbyville while Tenaha won the battle of the Tigers 50-38. West Sabine returns 8 lettermen with 11 lost. Returning starters: O/D 6/3. Not much history between the two schools; best I can tell the series looks like this: Series Record 3-1-0 Season Winner Score 2013 West Sabine 28-10 DIS 2012 Alto 40-26 DIS 1993 Alto 48-8 DIS 1992 Alto 26-0 DIS The Jackets matched Shelbyville touchdown for touchdown, but the Dragons had 2 more conversions. (That series now stands at 17-3 Alto.) Many positives from Friday night…especially the second half when the Mean Sting defense made adjustments and held Shelbyville to a single score. Down by 19 and 20 points at separate times, the Jackets fought and scrapped their way back into the game and were driving when time expired, falling 48-44. The Jackets racked up 447 yards in total offense. Hope to take these positives into Friday’s game with the Tigers! Who ya got?
  13. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the San Augustine Wolves this Saturday at Cam’ron Matthews Field at Jacket Stadium; kick-off has been moved to SATURDAY at 2:00 p.m. The Jackets won the 599th game in program history this past Friday by defeating the West Sabine Tigers 48-22 to even the season record at 1-1; it was Coach Grigsby’s first career win as a head coach! The Wolfpack fought hard against Tenaha but fell in an overtime nail biter 12-6. In Week 1 SA fell to Hemphill 44-0 while Alto fell to Shelbyville 48-44. This will be the 31st meeting between the schools with Alto leading the series 20-10-0. Usually a battle between these two! Who ya got?

  15. Hard to believe but here we are at Week 10 and in the last week of district play! The Alto Yellowjackets will host their old rival the Groveton Indians for the 70th installment of what was once one of the most highly anticipated games in the state. Many a battle between these two through the years. The “young ‘uns” do not realize as much the WARS between these schools because the rivalry has been somewhat lopsided in recent years and also because many years we ended up in different districts or not on the schedule at all. Now, mention the word Groveton to 90s kids on down and that word evokes some emotion. Both teams come into this game with wins on Friday. The Jackets “upset” the Normangee Panthers 56-23 while the Indians grabbed their first win of the season 30-26 over the Leon Cougars. The Jackets are looking to continue to improve and build on the success they are experiencing under the new/old system in place by Coach Gamble. With the win this past Friday, the Mean Sting moves into second place in the district standings behind Centerville. The Jackets defeated the Indians 48-38 last season. The last victory by Groveton was in 2012. The Indians lead the series 37-30-2. Who finishes district with the dub? 16. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Normangee Panthers this Friday at Jacket Stadium in a key District 11-2A showdown; kickoff is 7:00 p.m. The Mean Sting blanked the Leon Cougars 46-0 Friday while the Panthers downed Grapeland 56-36. Normangee was projected by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to win the district. The Panthers lost 15 seniors and return 10 lettermen, 5 on offense and 6 on defense. Normangee started strong in pre-district with wins over Bremond (49-13) and Iola (51-14) but then had a rough stretch with 3 losses in a row to Chilton (37-0), Lovelady (35-6), and Groesbeck (54-6). Since then though, they have won big in district over Groveton (42-21), Leon (55-0), and Grapeland (56-36). As best I can tell Alto and Normangee have only played twice: a 2018 bi-district playoff game where Alto won 47-16 and then in District last season, a 35-22 Normangee win. Who breaks the series tie of 1-1 and gets the important district win? 17. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Leon County to take on the Cougars this Friday. The Jackets lost a hard fought game to the Centerville Tigers at home last week 38-16 while Leon fell to Normangee 55-0. The Cougars lost 14 seniors from last season’s area finalist team and return 5 on offense and 5 on defense. Leon has wins over Dawson (22-20), Somerville (38-20), and Cayuga (38-6) with losses to Rosebud-Lott (60-22), Bruceville-Eddy (14-12), Centerville (54-8), and Normangee (55-0). The Mean Sting looks to regroup and get back in the win column. After starting district with a big win over Grapeland 49-14 the week before, the Jackets lost a very physical game against Centerville. The Jackets went toe to toe with the Tigers with a halftime score of 17-16 but were shutout in the second half for the first time this season. The Jackets travel to Jewett for the first time since 1991, the last time the schools were in the same district. Having only played 5 times, the Jackets lead the series 4-1. In last year’s contest Alto fell to Leon 30-8. Who gets in the win column this week?
  18. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Centerville Tigers this Friday in what many believe will give the winner a big leg up on the district championship. The Tigers, like the Jackets, return almost their entire team from last season. Centerville defeated Alto in 2020 34-24 after Alto lead 24-6 at halftime. (This loss really stung!) Alto comes into Friday’s game on a 3-game winning streak having most recently defeated district rival Grapeland (49-14), San Augustine (47-20), and Winona (42-7); the loss was to Troup (48-18) in Week 1. Centerville has won the last 4 in a row. They have wins over New Waverly (27-14), Thorndale (42-28), Westwood (26-20), Bremond (56-7), and a district win over Leon (54-8); their loss was in Week 2 to Corrigan-Camden in OT (27-19). The Mean Sting is making progress every week under Coach Gamble’s new (old! Lol) system averaging 46 points a game the last 3 games. Centerville is playing with confidence having put up over 50 in the last two weeks. Both are improving on defense. Who starts district 2-0?
  19. DISTRICT OPENER! The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Grapeland Friday to take on the Sandies in the District 11-2A D1 opener; kickoff is 7:00 p.m.! The Jackets are on a 2-game win streak after beating Winona (42-7) and San Augustine (47-20); the loss was to Troup (48-18) in Week 1. The Sandies handily defeated a much-improved Burkeville team 58-22 Friday and have wins over Shelbyville (50-30) and Cayuga (36-20); their two losses are to Elkhart (40-14) and Kirbyville (33-14). Both teams should be feeling confident after experiencing success in their respective pre-district schedules. Alto returns 20 lettermen while Grapeland returns 22. The Jackets have 8/8 returning starters on O/D while the Sandies return 8/7. Both are under new head coaching leadership. Grapeland defeated Alto for the first time since 1991 in last year’s contest 50-28. The Sandies are picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to finish 3rd just ahead of Alto. The Mean Sting leads the series 39-23-1. Who gets the win and a leg up in district play? Interesting side note: Alto and Grapeland first played in Alto’s inaugural season in 1927, a 14-0 Jacket win. Grapeland began playing football 2 years earlier in 1925. Grapeland’s first win over Alto came in 1934 18-6. These two go way back! Lol
  20. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the San Augustine Wolves this week. The Mean Sting got their first win of the season 42-7 against the Winona Wildcats on Friday. San Augustine fell 62-7 to a talented West Rusk squad. The Jackets have only played one other game (a first week loss to undefeated Troup) and then had a couple weeks off because of Covid. The Wolves started the season with a win over West Sabine but have dropped the next games to Beaumont Kelly, Elkhart and then West Rusk. Both squads have new coaches this season. The Wolves are a young group and the Jackets are feeling confident after putting together a good win at home. San Augustine won last year’s contest 48-20. Alto leads the series 19-10. Who gets their second win of the season?
  21. The Alto Yellowjackets will host the Winona Wildcats this Friday at 7:30 in the first home game of the season. (I’m claiming it right now! Lol) The Jackets have not played since Week 1 vs. Troup and are anxious to get back under the Friday night lights. Winona has three games under their belts with a win over Lone Oak and losses to Frankston and Elysian Fields. It’s homecoming in Alto with festivities beginning at 7:00 p.m. Fingers crossed that we are 100% and everything goes as scheduled. UPDATE: District 11-2A play is now October 1st for all schools; bye week has been moved to November 5th per District 11-2A coaches meeting on Monday, 9/13/2021.
  22. The Alto Yellowjackets will hopefully return to the gridiron this coming Friday when the Carlisle Indians are scheduled to come to town. Alto HS dismissed classes Thursday and Friday because of high absences due to Covid and is set to resume school on Tuesday, September 7. The game with Timpson was cancelled. The Jackets and Indians have one common opponent: Troup, both losses. Alto fell 48-18 while Carlisle lost 41-26. Both squads are looking for that first dub! These teams have a special bond because of one night back in 2015 when Alto lost Cam’ron Matthews on the field of play during the Carlisle game. Total respect between these teams. That being said it looks like it’s Alto’s turn to win this one and I’ll take it! (See pattern below! Just sayin’!) Lol The series is tight with the Jackets leading 7-6-2. Who ya got?
  23. (Side-note: I asked Bear9T1 if he wanted to start this thread since Timpson is the heavy favorite! He said for me to go ahead. Lol) The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D1) will travel to Timpson to take on the #3 Bears (10-2A D1) this Friday. The Jackets stumbled out of the gate with a 48-18 loss to Troup while the Bears soundly defeated Frankston 61-0. The Jackets lead the series 30-16-1 but lost to the state semi-finalists 40-6 last year. The last time Timpson defeated Alto two years in a row was in 2003 and 2004. Seems like a tall task for the Jackets, who are learning a new system under Coach Gamble, but that’s why you play the game, right? The Jackets will have to limit mistakes (too many turnovers vs Troup!) and play with their hair on fire every down to have any hope of upsetting the Bears. I’m a homer and never pick against my Jackets so I’m going Alto by 7. Some folks are saying Timpson by fiddy. We’ll see Friday night! It’s the BATTLE OF THE BLACK & GOLD and IT’S ON!! GOOOOOO JACKETS! STING ‘EM!!
  24. The Alto Yellowjackets (11-2A D1) will travel to Troup to take on the Tigers (9-3A D2) in the first game of the season. The Jackets return 20 lettermen with 8 offensive and 8 defensive starters. Alto graduated 4 seniors and finished the 2020 season a disappointing 2-8 (1-4 in district) and missed the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. (Tough tough all the way around and very humbling, too! They say adversity is good for you though, right?!). The JV Jackets finished as district champions. The Mean Sting is picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to finish District 11-2A 4th behind Normangee, Centerville, & Grapeland, and ahead of Leon and Groveton. Coach Meeks left for Center after 3 years and the Jackets hired Alto alum Lance Gamble back in early spring. Brand new offense & brand new defense (well “new”….. back to the 90s! Lol), and here we goooooo! The Troup Tigers return 23 lettermen with 9 offensive and 8 defensive starters. The Tigers finished the 2020 campaign 5-5 overall and 4-2 in district. Texas Football has the Tigers predicted to finish 3rd in District 9-3A D2 behind West Rusk and Harmony. Last year, Troup defeated Alto 27-0. The Jackets are making progress in the new system. Is it enough to derail the Tigers and start 1-0? We will see! Let’s gooooo Jackets!
  25. The Alto Yellowjackets travel to Centerville to take on the Tigers this Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Jackets fell in the district opener to Grapeland 50-28 while Centerville was “upset” (?) by Leon 44-14. Best I can tell Alto and Centerville have played a total of 10 times with Alto leading the series 6-4. The last meeting was in 2016 in the bi-district playoffs with Centerville winning 49-28. Alto put up a season-high 28 points against a tough Grapeland team but is still looking for that first W. It’s 2020.....like Bizarro world. Covid pandemic, HS baseball cancelled, no track season, son and nephews’ prom and senior activities cancelled, masks, football cancellations, lost my grandmother and wife’s grandmother, my teams at every level HS, college, pro losing, etc etc....but in church this morning I gleaned some perspective. Lots to be thankful for and not the end of the world. Lol We press on and continue to work hard to improve each week. These young guys are gaining valuable experience and I am proud of each one of them for the work they have and continue to put in. Their time is coming. Who gets that first district win? On a positive side note: Alto had a groundbreaking ceremony last Friday for the new high school! Construction has started on a $10.5 million high school, coliseum, and elementary gym following the two tornadoes that ripped through our town in April 2019. Excited to see the finished product! Move-in date: August 2021.
