For the second time in three years, the Lobos and Rangers meet at John E. Kincaide Stadium in the Area Round of the playoffs. In that meeting, the Lobos and Rangers combined for 1,238 total yards and 118 points. While Jesuit’s attack was through the air, 433 yards and 51 pass attempts, Longview did their damage on the ground with 462 rushing yards. The Lobos completed 7 passes on just 7 pass attempts and rolled up 75 points on the Jesuit defense on just 36 offensive snaps. The star for Jesuit that day was Parker Towns, but EJ Smith tallied two scores that afternoon, while Longview’s Haynes King returns after throwing three touchdowns and accounting for 234 total yards on the day. The two programs meet for the eight time because of both teams dominating performance in the first round. Longview started their defense of the 6A Division II State Title with a 41-10 beat down of Temple at Lobo Stadium. Longview rolled up 537 yards on the Wildcats, while holding the vaunted Temple offense to just 218 yards on the night. The Wildcats had not had a game all season below 490 yards. Jesuit hosted Lakeview Centennial and rushed for 342 yards on the night, and accounted for 404 total yards, in a 45-14 beat down of the Patriots. The Lobos come into Friday’s contest against Jesuit holding the state’s longest winning streak at 27-game. The Lobos tied John Tyler’s 27-game winning streak, from 1994 to 1995, on Friday night, tying the longest winning streak in 6A/5A East Texas History. The Lobos and Rangers come into Kincaide Stadium, or better known as Lobo West to Longview fans, meeting for the 8th time. The Lobos have dominated the entire series against the Rangers, a series that dates back to 1972. The two programs met four years in a row in non-district action between 1972 and 1975, where the Rangers did not tally a single point. The closest contest was a 1973 Lobo victory at Lobo Stadium, 14-0. The two programs did not meet again until 2004 in the Area round, when the Rangers switched from a TCIL schedule and joined the UIL. The Rangers had lost just one game that season as they walked into Lion Memorial Stadium in Ennis. After a lengthy delay due to rain, the Lobos rushed for 513 yards to introduce Jesuit to the big boys and handed Jesuit a 44-14 beatdown. Jesuit and Longview met again in the Area round in 2012, this time at Wildcat-Ram Stadium in Richardson. While the Rangers were able to be competitive for a half and lead the Lobos 19-14 in the second half, the Lobos dominated the rest of the way and defeated the Rangers, 57-25. Tory White’s 99-yard rush for a score is the best thing Lobo fans remember from that contest. The last meeting came in 2017. Meeting at Kincaide Stadium, Lobo Stadium West has become a huge home for the Lobos under John King through out their playoff runs. Longview has run out an 11-0 record at Kinciade, and a 10-0 playoff record, dating back to 2007. It’ll be a big showdown on Friday night between the Lobos and Rangers. In 1945, Joe Young scored three times, Bobby Dill returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score while the Lobo defense held the Bears to just 116 yards on the day as Longview steamrolled Gladewater, 39-7, at Bear Stadium. In 1951, Dick Nash rushed in from two yards out in the third quarter to tie the game, but Marshall's 46 pass reception by Jimmy Moore in the 4th quarter gave Marshall a 14-7 victory over Longview at Maverick Stadium. In 1963, four different Panthers tallied scores, including a 32-yard reception by Robin Welch and a 55-yard run by David Paulette to give the Panthers a 28-6 victory over Longview at Panther Stadium. Rusty Musser scored Longview’s only tally in the 4th quarter, a 47-yard run. In 1974, Leo McCoy scored twice, and Steve Gaddis added the other Longview tally but it wasn’t enough as Plano’s Tony Wallis scored from 8 yards out with 8 minutes to play in the 4th quarter to lift the Wildcats to a 28-21 victory at Rose Stadium. In 1986, Jimmy Smith rushed in from two yards out, the Lobo defense forced a safety and Alonzo Adams returned an interception for a score in the 3rd quarter to lift Longview to a 14-7 victory over Conroe McCullough at the Astrodome in the Area Round. In 1997, Fred Talley, Shawn Byrdsong and Jay Hurst all tallied for Longview as the Lobos knocked off Plano East, 21-10, at Texas Stadium in the Area Round. The Lobos forced three turnovers on the day to bring home the victory. In 2014, Longview fell behind 16-0 early in the second quarter, came back to take a 21-16 lead late in the same quarter before ultimately falling to the Mansfield Lake Ridge Eagles at Rose Stadium, 37-35. Jett Duffey’s Eagle rung up a program worst for the Lobo defense, 579 yards on the night, but a missed field goal from 49-yards out in the pouring rain as time ran out was the nail in the coffin. In 2013, McKinney Boyd jumped out to a 10-7 halftime lead, but Longview jumped right back with 20 unanswered points in the third quarter as the Lobos knocked off the Broncos, 27-10, at Wildcat-Ram Stadium in Richardson. Travis Howard’s 25-yard fumble return for the score finished the day on a very chilly Saturday afternoon.

Longview sent their statement to the rest of the region following their 42-21 demolishing of the Beaumont West Brook Bruins. The Lobos held a slight 7-6 lead at halftime only to come out roaring in the 3rd quarter to the tune of a 28-point quarter and a 35-14 lead. Another touchdown added in the fourth pushed the Longview lead to 42-14 before the Bruins finally broke the scoring run in the final minutes with the second stringers in. For Longview, it avenges a loss to these same Bruins from a year quarter. A loss that saw the Lobos blow a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter down in Beaumont to fall 34-33. The win gives the Lobos their 10th 10-win season under current head coach John King, and their 60th playoff win in program history. Next up for the Lobos is a familiar playoff opponent in the Dallas Jesuit Rangers. The Lobos and Rangers meet for the 3rd time in the playoffs, after previous meetings in 2004 and 2012. In 2004, the Rangers came in with a 10-1 record to the Area round meeting as the Lobos came in 11-0. In a rain drenched game, Longview walked away with a 44-14 victory. In the 2012 meeting, a profilic offense was suppose to give the Rangers a big chance but after a back and forth 1st quarter, Longview imposed their will on Jesuit and ran away with the contest with a 57-25 win. The Lobos return to John E. Kincaide Stadium for the first time since their 2013 Bi-District contest against Rowlett. Kincaide has become a 2nd home for previous Longview teams, as the Lobos sport a 10-0 record at the Dallas ISD based stadium. 9 of those 10 victories came in the post season. Those 3 of those games saw the Lobos not score 30 points, and only 2 of the games were within two scores. Longview will be looking to advance to their 10th Regional Round appearance under John King.
