  1. The Alto Yellowjackets will travel to Groveton on Friday in the first game of the season to take on their old rival for the 73rd meeting of the Jackets and Indians. Groveton leads the series 38-32-2 winning last year's meeting with the Jackets for the first time since 2012. Groveton is under the leadership of Coach Mike Waldie, first year HC, and has 22 returning lettermen with 14 lost to graduation; they return 4 starters on offense and 6 on defense. The Indians went 7-4 in 2023, 4-1 in district play and are picked by Dave Campbell's Texas Football to finish 5th in District 12-2A D1 behind Centerville, Leon, Corrigan-Camden, and Hearne. They are expected to beat Normangee. The Mean Sting is under 3rd year HC Brock Grigsby and return 20 lettermen with 3 lost to graduation; they return 9 starters on each side of the ball. The Jackets had their first (and only 3rd overall in 96 years) winless season since 1977, finishing 0-10. Alto is picked by DCTF to finish 6th in District 11-2A D2 behind Lovelady, Mt. Enterprise, Overton, Tenaha, and Grapeland. They are expected to beat Cushing. The Jackets will be looking to break that *^#%*! losing streak and get in the win column. Groveton would like to get that first win under their new coach. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Groveton. 3. Hard to believe but here we are at Week 10 and in the last week of district play! The Alto Yellowjackets will host their old rival the Groveton Indians for the 70th installment of what was once one of the most highly anticipated games in the state. Many a battle between these two through the years. The “young ‘uns” do not realize as much the WARS between these schools because the rivalry has been somewhat lopsided in recent years and also because many years we ended up in different districts or not on the schedule at all. Now, mention the word Groveton to 90s kids on down and that word evokes some emotion. Both teams come into this game with wins on Friday. The Jackets “upset” the Normangee Panthers 56-23 while the Indians grabbed their first win of the season 30-26 over the Leon Cougars. The Jackets are looking to continue to improve and build on the success they are experiencing under the new/old system in place by Coach Gamble. With the win this past Friday, the Mean Sting moves into second place in the district standings behind Centerville. The Jackets defeated the Indians 48-38 last season. The last victory by Groveton was in 2012. The Indians lead the series 37-30-2. Who finishes district with the dub? 4. Today begins the 2018-19 high school baseball season! Four 2A schools (Alto, Cushing, Douglass, Groveton) and three 1A schools (Apple Springs, Kennard, Wells) come together to comprise District 22. The 2A schools will play each other three times in district play and the 1A schools one time. Douglass (28-7 | 11-1 Regional Finalist in 2018) is the pre-season #2 team in the state while Cushing (12-10-1 | 7-5 Area Finalist) also gets a mention. Groveton (14-10 | 9-3 Regional Quarterfinalist) is just two years removed from playing in the state tournament while Alto returns six starters from a 26-6 | 10-2 Area Finalist team with a talented freshman group coming. Should be a competitive district! http://txhighschoolbaseball.com/2a/22-2a/ http://txhighschoolbaseball.com/2a/diamond-pro-thsb-preseason-2a-top-20/
  5. No better way to get this season started than against the neighbors from down the road. Groveton’s strength seems to be their size along the OL/DL and Lovelady’s strength seems to be at the skill positions. There doesn’t seem to be any love lost between these two rivals so I expect it to be an all out war. I like our chances as I see us spreading them out and being a mismatch for them in the open field. Should be a good one. Let’s hear some thoughts from the smoaky experts!
  6. So, if Lovelady wins they win district, if groveton wins AND Centerville loses, they'd win district (the win would be the tiebreaker, right?) But if groveton wins AND centerville wins, that'd make all 3 teams each have 1 loss. So how'd they break the tie?
