Longview returns to the national landscape for the second consecutive year, and for the sixth time overall. But for the first time, the cameras of ESPN will be amongst the crowd. Longview comes into Rose Stadium fresh off a 53-0 beat down of the Marshall Mavericks. The Lobos, winners of a school record 18-consecutive games, saw the Mavs control the tempo in the first quarter to the tune of a 0-0 contest with Marshall running the 40-second clock down to 1 second every single play. Longview’s one possession in the first quarter ended in a punt. Following the first quarter, the Lobos..and more so Kaden Meredith…took over. Longview ended the half up 17-0. A quick score to start the second half deflated any chance the Mavericks had. A safety following the kickoff, then a kickoff return of the kick pushed the game out of distance and the route was on. Longview rolled to the tune of 53-0 over the Mavericks, the largest such margin of victory in the series’ history. The win marked the fifth time the Lobos have scored at least 50 points on the Mavericks in the last 11 seasons. Previous to 2008, Longview had never scored 50 or more points on a Marshall football team. The shutout was also Longview’s 19th overall against the Mavericks, and third since 2011. Overall, it was Longview’s 18th victory in the last 19 meetings over the Mavericks. Since Longview’s first 19-game winning streak started over the Mavs in 1969, 50 years ago this season, Longview is 42-9 against their long time rivals from the east. The Lobos now switch focus to their rivals from the west, the John Tyler Lions. Fresh off a rebounding season in 2018, that saw Cujo nearly upset the defending state champions, the Lions opened their 2019 campaign with a loss to the Mesquite Horn Jaguars. Then followed things up with a 34-7 loss to their cross town rival, Tyler Lee, 34-7. The Lions, after missing the post season two years ago, bounced back last season after the drop to 5A Division I. But the Lions still suffered big time early on in the season, with big losses to Cedar Hill & Longview to start the season. JT had a scheduled meeting with Euless Trinity, but it was cancelled. Last season’s victory for Longview marked their 50th overall against the Lions, the second most over a single program in school history. Since defeating the Lions in 2001, which sent the Lobos to the post season and the Lions home for the year, Longview is 13-3 against John Tyler, having won the last two meetings. Longview rolls into Rose Stadium on a high note, having not lost to John Tyler at their home away from home since the 2000 season. The Lobos have won the last seven meetings against John Tyler at Rose Stadium, and have won the last 14 overall against TISD dating back to 2002. Overall, the Lobos have won 20 of their last 21 visits to the Rose City, with the only loss coming to Mansfield Lake Ridge in 2015 by two points. Since ending their 20-year playoff streak back in 1967, the Lobos have pounded their way to a 34-15-1 record over John Tyler. The Lobos will be rolling in, looking to win their 19th game in a row overall and their 12th non-district contest in a row. In 1980, Zane Butter started the scoring before Nathan Harris tallied two of his own in a 35-19 Longview victory over Fort Worth Paschal at Lobo Stadium. Terry Morrow and Ronnie Hunter each scored on the night. In 1986, Thomas Snoddy rushed for two touchdowns while Joe Brooks returned an interception for a score from 70 yards out. In 2015, Longview grabbed the lead in the 4th quarter thanks to a Jacorian Jones 11 yard passing touchdown followed by a two point conversion. The Lobos, fresh off a 35-28 national televised win over long time rival Lufkin, headed into Marshall's Maverick Stadium and handed the Mavericks one of their worst losses ever in their home stadium with a 60-14 Lobo win. Longview tallied three times in the first quarter and never looked back, strolling to a point total that Longview had never reached against the Mavericks before. The 60-14 win increased Longview's lead in the series to 19 games and gave the Lobos a three game winning streak over the Mavs. Since their 2015 upset victory, Marshall has not been able to get a single thing going in the three games against the Lobos, struggling to a 157-28 scoreline in favor of Longview. The Lobos now turn their attention to another long time rival, their third in three weeks, in the John Tyler Lions. The Lobos and Lions will meet for the 95th time on Friday night as the two storied programs are two of East Texas's most traditional powers. The Lions got a little revenge on their cross town rivals last Saturday night, handing the Tyler Lee Red Raiders an ugly 65-21 loss, following an upset Red Raider victory last season that saw the Lions miss the post season for the first time since 2007. The win for Cujo seemingly rectified the Lions' opening season, 57-7, loss at the hands of DFW powerhouse Cedar Hill, where the Lions could not get a single thing going their way. The Lions come into the rivalry game having won their past five games in Lobo Stadium, three of which have come against the Lobos. Longview's last victory over the Lions at their home stadium came in 2006, when the Lobos had to come from behind to win 28-21. Since that win, the Lions have had three straight blow out victories, with all three match ups being multiple score games at halftime in favor of the Lions. Overall, the Lobos and Lions have traded victories back and forth in the last six meetings, with neither team being able to regain control of the series, following Longview's 9-game winning streak over the Lions. The two schools will meet for the 95th time, after three previously unfound games were discovered from 1917 and 1920. The series dates back to 1912, when Longview registered a 13-7 victory in Longview. The two schools will meet for the 46th time overall in Longview this coming Friday, where Longview plans to celebrate Green Out and Homecoming. The Lobos are 14-2 all-time in their Green Out contests, dating back to 2002, with the only losses coming to Allen in 2011 and John Tyler in 2014. The Lions are 1-3 in Green Out contests. Under John King, the Lobos are 14-0 in Homecoming contests with Longview's last loss coming in 2013 to Tyler Lee (18-14). This will be the first time since 1992 that John Tyler will be the Homecoming opponent for the Lobos, when Longview pulled out a 17-16 victory. Overall, the Lobos are 38-13-4 in Homecoming games. The Lobos are looking to improve to 3-0 on the season for just the fifth time in 15 seasons under John King, and for the first time in back to back seasons since King's first two seasons in 2004 and 2005. In 1951, Longview hosted Port Neches-Groves at Lobo Stadium and walked away with a 19-13 victory. In 1956, the Lobos jumped out to a 20-0 lead behind two Pete Burks 50+ rushing touchdowns before South Oak Cliff attempted to climb back into the game, but the Lobos held on for a 20-14 win over the Golden Bears. In 1962, Longview and South Oak Cliff battled to a 6-6 tie in Lobo Stadium. In 1973, Mike Mock kicked a 40 yard field goal before Danny Majors rushed in from 1 yard out to give the Lobos a 9-0 lead. The Longview defense would have to hold on and gave the Lobos a 9-6 win over La Marque. In 1979, Fort Worth Paschal’s Daryl Zeller had an 11-14 passing night and hit David Brooks with 5 minutes to go to give the Panthers a 30-23 victory over the Lobos. In 1984, five different Lobos would tally and added on a field goal as Longview would run all over Fort Worth Trimble Tech for a 35-14 victory. In 1990, seven different Lobos would run into the end zone, including a first quarter John Washington 38-yard pass reception, as Longview dominated Fort Worth Trimble Tech the entire way in a 47-0 thumping. In 2001, Bobby Renkes finished his record setting day by kicking his 3rd field goal of the night with 1:12 remaining to lift Lake Highlands to a 15-14 victory over Longview at Wildcat-Ram Stadium. In 2012, Tory White would get the night started as 7 different Lobos tallied in a rain soaked game as Longview would roll past Marshall, 48-0, in Lobo Stadium. In 2013, Ja’Mycal Hasty would scored three touchdowns and a missed extra point would pay dividends for Longview, as the Lobos squeaked past Mississippi’s Olive Branch, 27-26, at Independence Stadium.

Two one point wins over your biggest rival, is something to cherish. For the second consecutive meeting, Longview knocked off their arch rival Lufkin by a single point. Following a 43-42 comeback victory in the post season last year, the Lobos one up themselves by blocking an extra point with 34 seconds remaining in the contest to send themselves to a 1-0 record in the opening game of the 2015 season. The 21-20 victory over the Pack gives the Lobos a series lead over Lufkin for the first time since 2003, 37-36-4. The win also marked John King’s 121st victory as the head coach of the Lobos, moving him into sole possession of first overall in wins by a head coach in Longview history. But the road following the victory over the #10 ranked Panthers doesn’t get any easier as they travel back to Tyler for the third time in their past four games where the John Tyler Lions, fresh off an opening season loss to Plano are awaiting them. The 89th edition of Longview and John Tyler will cap the Trinity Mother Frances Classic on Saturday night, with games on Thursday and Friday at Rose Stadium prior to Saturday. The visit to Rose Stadium will mark the 70th overall visit, not counting the old Rose Stadium with this stadium opening in the late 1940s. In the first 69 visits, the Lobos have posted a 42-26-1 overall record with last season’s two point loss to Lake Ridge ending a 15-game winning streak in Tyler. The Lobos still have yet to lose to a Tyler ISD squad inside Rose Stadium since October of 2002 against Tyler Lee (28-21). The last time Longview lost against John Tyler in Rose Stadium came 15 years ago in 2000, by a 27-14 count. Longview and John will meet for just the fourth time in the previous 8 years, after having met every season from 1931 to 2007. A series that Longview took control of with a 9-game winning streak from 2001 to 2007, has gone back and forth the past three meetings. John Tyler rolled to a 41-25 victory last season inside Lobo Stadium, marking the second consecutive victory in Longview for Cujo. Coming into the game, the Lobos will be looking to start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2011, where they knocked off Marshall and John Tyler on consecutive weeks. The Lions will be looking for a 2-game winning streak over the Lobos, which hasn’t happened since John Tyler won three straight from 1998 to 2000.
