The Longview Lobos return home to Lobo Stadium for the final time of the regular season this Friday night, as they host the Robert E Lee Red Raiders for Senior Night. The Lobos, 8-0 overall and 4-0 in district play, are fresh off their largest victory of the season in a 55-0 beat down of the North Mesquite Stallions. The win for Longview was their 7th in a row over the Stallions, dating back to 2010. Overall, the Lobos have won 24 games in a row, 24 regular season games in a row and 16 district games in a row. The Lobos return home where Longview holds a 45-1 district record under current head coach John King, having won 17 games in a row. A win against the Lee Red Raiders will clinch Longview's 15th #1 seed in 16 seasons under John King. Tyler Lee (5-3, 2-2) comes into Friday's game with a case of the almosts. Two weeks ago, Tyler Lee held a 14-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter over Mesquite, only to lose that lead in the final 30 seconds and fall 18-14 at Hanby Stadium. This past Friday, the Red Raiders once again held a late lead on Rockwall, but the Yellowjackets overcame the Red Raiders and posted a 35-32 victory with a touchdown in the final two minutes. Lee comes into Friday's contest looking to post their 6th win of the season, clinching just their second winning season since 2009. But the Red Raiders, more importantly, are still looking to clinch a playoff berth, which would be their first since 2014. Longview's 55-0 win over North Mesquite clinched their 19th consecutive post season appearance and 45th overall in program history. The Lobos last missed the post season in 2000, when they posted a 3-7 (1-4) record. Longview and Robert E Lee meet each other for the 60th time on Friday night. The 60 meetings is the 5th most in Longview history. The Lobos, holding a 43-14-2 series lead, have won 14 in a row over their rivals to the west. Longview's last loss came in 2003, when the Lobos dropped an 18-14 decision to Lee after holding a 14-3 halftime lead. In the 16 years since that loss, the Lobos have steamrolled the Red Raiders..especially since 2010. The Lobos have scored 45 or more points in six consecutive meetings, and 50 or more in five consecutive meetings. While it looks like the Red Raiders are much improved from last season, where they dropped a 63-14 decision to the Lobos, they will have to slow down Longview's quick starts at home this year. The Lobos have outscored opponents 80-3 in the first half play through three games this season. It'll be a East Texas shootout this Friday between two strong running games, as the Lobos and Red Raiders battle in meeting #60. That's the mantra the Longview Lobos rang out following their 49-13 beat down of the Rockwall Heath Hawks. The Lobos, with the win, moved to within a win of clinching the program's 19 playoff consecutive playoff appearance. Already a school record at 18 years in a row in the post season, the Lobos have never gone to the post season for an entire decade (Lobos missed the post season in 2000 prevent the 2000s from completing an entire decade in the post season). Longview rolled to within one game of clinching that post season berth, by eliminating the Heath Hawks, the first team to be mathematically eliminated. The Lobos saw quarterback Haynes King return to this 2018 form, by throwing four touchdown passes on the night in a 10 for 14 night for the senior. King now holds 5 of the 15 four or more passing touchdown nights in Longview school history. The win for the Lobos was their 6th in a row over the Heath Hawks, the sixth time in school history the Lobos have opened a series with 6 or more victories in a row. Longview now turns their attention towards eliminating another team from playoff contention, in the North Mesquite Stallions. Second year head coach Tim Seder has not been able to bring North back to its glory days in his first couple years as head coach, with the Stallions staring a fourth consecutive season without a post season berth in the face. The Stallions have opened 11-6A play with three consecutive losses, getting outscored 156-34 in those three losses. The Lobos return to Hanby Stadium just two weeks apart from having knocked off North's rival in Mesquite Horn. The Lobos and Stallions will meet at Hanby for the first time in the series' history. This will be the seventh time for the Lobos to take on North in Mesquite, with all six previous games being at Mesquite Memorial where the Lobos hold a 5-1 record against the Stallions. In what will be the 15th game of the series, the Stallions actually hold the most wins over Longview by any Mesquite ISD squad at three. North's last victory came in 2010, when Joe Bergeron and the Stallions went wild on a Lobo squad in the fourth quarter, as they erased a 14-3 Lobo lead and defeated Longview 24-14. Since that loss, six games ago, the Lobos have outscored North 291 to 83. The Stallions previous two wins came in 1971 and 1988, both non-district meetings. Longview rolls into Hanby holding a 23-game winning streak, the state's longest. The Lobos also are holding a 23-game regular season winning streak, the second longest in school history, and a 15-game district winning streak, the fourth longest in school history. I should be a big night from the Lobo offense as the Lobos and Stallions meet at Hanby for the first time. WEEK EIGHT 11-6A SCHEDULE: North Mesquite vs Longview (E.H. In 1963, Jimmy Grahm ran in from three yards out and Reese Brown brought in a reception for a score in the first half as Lee ran all over Longview, 27-6, at Rose Stadium. Longview threw the ball 25 times on the night, completing just 6 passes in the loss. In 1968, David Kiowski ran in from 23 yards out late in the 4th quarter to lift the Friars of Bishop Lynch over Longview, 27-21. Longview took a 21-13 lead into the 4th quarter before the Friars grabbed hold of the game at Roffino Stadium. In 1974, Leo McCoy tallied twice in the second quarter following a Tommy Thomas 36 yard field goal in the first, as Longview defeated Texas High, 17-7, at Lobo Stadium. In 1985, Thomas Snoddy rushed in for two touchdowns in the first quarter to start the domination over the Marshall Mavericks at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos, rolling to a 42-12 victory, rushed for 305 yards and put up 409 total yards in the dominating victory. For the fifth time this season, it was the Kaden Meredith show as Longview returned to E.H. Hanby Stadium for the first of three contests there in the next five weeks. Kaden Meredith racked up four touchdowns and 354 yards, coming just shy of Fred Talley's 387 rushing yards in a single game that Talley set in his final game as a Lobo down in Nacogdoches back in 1998. Kaden Meredith's career day led to a 44-20 victory over Mesquite Horn, their first over the Jaguars in Mesquite since 2011. This was the first time the Lobos had visited Mesquite Horn since their last regular season loss back in September of 2017. Since then, including the victory over the Jags this season, Longview has reeled off a 32-1 overall record. Longview has won 22 wins in a row overall, 22 regular season victories and 14 district victories in a row. Longview's 22 wins overall is the most in school history. Longview's 22 regular season wins in a row is second most in school history (29 is the record set from 1975 to 1977). And Longview's 14 district wins in a row sits 5th in school history, but with four more wins to end the regular season this year, they can tie the second longest school record (school record is 36 set from 2004 to 2010). With the win, the Lobos improved to 2-0..sitting atop 11-6A along with fellow East Texas rival, Tyler Lee (5-1, 2-0), who had a bye this week. Longview now returns home to face on the Rockwall Heath Hawks, who have struggled since starting the season 3-0. The Hawks (3-4, 0-3) fell to their cross town rivals the Yellowjackets of Rockwall 38-17 this week, and sit on the edge of being eliminated from post season contention. However, the Hawks have been in all three games. They led Tyler Lee before a last minute drive by the Red Raiders brought home the win. They battled back and forth with Mesquite, but a late score by the Skeeters pushed it to a two score Mesquite win. Mike Spradlin had his Hawks flying, dominating three straight opponents in non-district, before McKinney North tore of the Hawk defense and the Heath season has come to a crashing halt. Heath returns to Longview for the third time in their young history. Their first meeting, in 2012, Longview jumped out to a 49-6 lead on the Hawks before halftime. Heath attempted a mini come back in the second half, but the Lobos rolled to a 52-27 win. In their last visit, the Heath Hawks actually grabbed a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Longview woke up on the first play of the second quarter and it led the Lobos to a dominating 49-7 win. In 1968, Ralph Blount’s field goal was the only score on the night for the Lobos as Marshall defeated Longview, 20-3, at Lobo Stadium. Four turnovers did the Lobos in on the night. In 1974, Ricky Watts hauled in two pass receptions for a score, and Thomas Cook took back an interception 60 yards for a tally as Longview defeated John Tyler, 29-7, at Rose Stadium. In 1980, Nathan Harris, Ronnie Hunter and Gahlen Johnson each brought in scores for the Lobos as Longview shut out Tyler Lee, 24-0, at Rose Stadium. In 1985, Tommie Taylor, Thomas Stauts and Brian Williams scored first half touchdowns before Jason Baird added a second half field goal as the Lobos defeated Lufkin, 24-10, at Abe Martin Stadium. In 1991, Andre Davis tallied five touchdowns on the night and Amond Hutchings scored another two in the 4th as Longview blew out Nacogdoches, 59-6, at Lobo Stadium. The Dragons’ only score on the night came on a blocked punt in the second quarter. The Lobos rallied up 21 first downs and 361 rushing yards on the night. In 1996, Longview trailed 21-6 midway through the 4th quarter before Fred Talley tallied two scores, including one in the final minute, sending the game to overtime. Longview’s Jay Hurst would rush in from three yards out in the second overtime to seal the win, 35-28, over the Tyler Lee Red Raiders at Rose Stadium. In 2002, Longview took a 12-10 lead into the 4th quarter, behind Fred Hawkins and Joel Armstrong first half scores, against the defending state champions before Lufkin woke up in the 4th and rolled to a 23-12 win over the Lobos at Lobo Stadium. In 2013, the Lobos rushed for 338 yards and compiled 501 total yards in a 49-30 beat down of Mesquite Horn at Lobo Stadium. Hanby Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW Bye week is over and it's back to the grind for the defending 6A Division II State Champions. Longview and Mesquite Horn meet for the 13th time this Friday night, heading into the contest in two extremely different situations. The Longview Lobos head to E.H. Hanby Stadium fresh off their lone bye week of the season. The week prior, the Lobos opened 11-6A play with a dominating 49-3 victory over the #14 ranked Rockwall Yellowjackets. Most would not have been shocked at the Longview victory over Rockwall, who won their 9th in a row over the Jackets. But the way the Lobo defense dominated Rockwall was beyond eye popping, as the Jackets were averaging over 50 points a game in non-district. The Mesquite Horn Jaguars head home this week, a week after facing those same Rockwall Yellowjackets...and falling in Rockwall, 45-7. With the loss, the Jags fell to 2-4 on the season, the lone team with a sub-.500 record in district 11-6A. The Lobos and Jags still have it all to play for in district action, as a win for the Jags could easily jump Horn back into the district championship race. Longview, 5-0, heads into Hanby with a 5-0 record and holder of the state's longest winning streak at 21-games. Longview's last loss came back in December of 2017, and the Lobos stand 31-1 in their last 32 contests. Longview also holds a 13-game district winning streak, with the last loss coming...to the Mesquite Horn Jaguars, back on September 22nd, 2017. In Longview's 13-game district win streak, the Lobos have had just 3 games decided within two scores (31-21 vs Rockwall in 2017, 28-19 vs John Tyler in 2017 and 42-35 vs Rockwall in 2018). The Lobos return to Hanby Stadium for the first time since a 2017, 61-3 victory over Mesquite. Previous to that victory, the Lobos had lost three consecutive games in the stadium, including twice in a row to the Jaguars. The Lobos hold an 9-3 overall record inside Hanby. Longview's last victory over Horn in Mesquite came in 2011, a 38-30 back and forth affair. Since becoming head coach in 2004, the Lobos are a perfect 15-0 in games following their bye week..with last season's 50-3 win over the Jaguars being the second largest margin of victory of the entire 2018 football campaign. The Lobos and Jaguars meet for the 13th time in school history, which sits as the 16th most against a single program in Longview's history. The two programs first met in 2004, a 42-14 Lobo victory in a rain soaked Hanby Stadium. Longview jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the series, with Horn's first win not coming until 2012, a 25-17 win at Hanby. The two squads have met three years in a row following Longview's return to 6A, with the Lobos taking two of the three meetings. Longview heads into the game, looking to stay perfect no doubt, but with a win Longview will have clinched their 78th winning season in 110 seasons of Lobo football. In the last 49 years (not counting this season), the Lobos have winning seasons in 45 of them. In 1963, Kenny Walters scored two first half touchdowns with Tommy Tompkins rushing back a 50 yard interception for a pick six as the Irving Tigers knocked off Longview, 18-0, at Lobo Stadium. In 1974, Glendale Smith rushed in from one yard out while Ricky Watts brought back a 78 yard interception return for a score in Longview’s 13-0 victory over Tyler Lee at Lobo Stadium. The Lobo offense managed just two first downs and 80 yards total on the night. In 1985, Jason Baird and Cloyd Boyd tallied all the points Longview would need to avoid a massive upset over the Dragons. The loss for Nacogdoches was their 18th consecutive loss. Both teams amounted for just 204 total yards on the night. In 1991, Andre Davis would tally three scores while John Washington brought in another two as Longview knocked off Lufkin, 36-27, at Abe Martin Stadium. The two teams went offensively wild combining for 54 first downs and 969 yards of total offense. The Panthers attempt 53 passes in the loss that saw Lufkin erased a 21-7 deficit to take a 27-21 lead only to lose it back to Longview in the 4th quarter. In 1996, Jacoby Shepherd nearly lead Lufkin to an win over the Lobos at Lobo Stadiu, but two tallies from Tajuan Stoker and Fred Talley’s 4th quarter score brought home the victory for Longview, 20-18. In 2002, Matt Flynn rushed in from one yard out with 4:19 to tally his third score of the night, that would propel Tyler Lee to a 28-21 victory over the Lobos at Rose Stadium. Longview returns to the national landscape for the second consecutive year, and for the sixth time overall. But for the first time, the cameras of ESPN will be amongst the crowd. Longview comes into Rose Stadium fresh off a 53-0 beat down of the Marshall Mavericks. The Lobos, winners of a school record 18-consecutive games, saw the Mavs control the tempo in the first quarter to the tune of a 0-0 contest with Marshall running the 40-second clock down to 1 second every single play. Longview’s one possession in the first quarter ended in a punt. Following the first quarter, the Lobos..and more so Kaden Meredith…took over. Longview ended the half up 17-0. A quick score to start the second half deflated any chance the Mavericks had. A safety following the kickoff, then a kickoff return of the kick pushed the game out of distance and the route was on. Longview rolled to the tune of 53-0 over the Mavericks, the largest such margin of victory in the series’ history. The win marked the fifth time the Lobos have scored at least 50 points on the Mavericks in the last 11 seasons. Previous to 2008, Longview had never scored 50 or more points on a Marshall football team. The shutout was also Longview’s 19th overall against the Mavericks, and third since 2011. Overall, it was Longview’s 18th victory in the last 19 meetings over the Mavericks. Since Longview’s first 19-game winning streak started over the Mavs in 1969, 50 years ago this season, Longview is 42-9 against their long time rivals from the east. The Lobos now switch focus to their rivals from the west, the John Tyler Lions. Fresh off a rebounding season in 2018, that saw Cujo nearly upset the defending state champions, the Lions opened their 2019 campaign with a loss to the Mesquite Horn Jaguars. Then followed things up with a 34-7 loss to their cross town rival, Tyler Lee, 34-7. The Lions, after missing the post season two years ago, bounced back last season after the drop to 5A Division I. But the Lions still suffered big time early on in the season, with big losses to Cedar Hill & Longview to start the season. JT had a scheduled meeting with Euless Trinity, but it was cancelled. Last season’s victory for Longview marked their 50th overall against the Lions, the second most over a single program in school history. Since defeating the Lions in 2001, which sent the Lobos to the post season and the Lions home for the year, Longview is 13-3 against John Tyler, having won the last two meetings. Longview rolls into Rose Stadium on a high note, having not lost to John Tyler at their home away from home since the 2000 season. The Lobos have won the last seven meetings against John Tyler at Rose Stadium, and have won the last 14 overall against TISD dating back to 2002. Overall, the Lobos have won 20 of their last 21 visits to the Rose City, with the only loss coming to Mansfield Lake Ridge in 2015 by two points. Since ending their 20-year playoff streak back in 1967, the Lobos have pounded their way to a 34-15-1 record over John Tyler. The Lobos will be rolling in, looking to win their 19th game in a row overall and their 12th non-district contest in a row. Longview held the Wildcats to 31 overall yards on the night. In 1969, Longview knocked off Dallas Sunset, 27-7, at Lobo Stadium. In 1975, Thomas Cook rushed for two scores, while Leo McCoy, Johnny Fuller and Sherman Johnson would each tally one each in a 34-0 Longview victory over Waco Richfield in Paul Tyson Stadium. The Lobos held the Rams to just 40 total yards on the night, including -4 rushing. In 1980, Zane Butter started the scoring before Nathan Harris tallied two of his own in a 35-19 Longview victory over Fort Worth Paschal at Lobo Stadium. Terry Morrow and Ronnie Hunter each scored on the night. In 1986, Thomas Snoddy rushed for two touchdowns while Joe Brooks returned an interception for a score from 70 yards out. Rolanda Reese finished the scoring with a 40 yard pass reception in a 28-2 Longview victory over Fort Worth Trimble Tech in Lobo Stadium. In 1997, David Monsivais kicked a 35 yard field goal but the Lobos saw a 7-3 lead for the Killeen Kangaroos on the scoreboard as the half ended. Shawn Byrdsong would change that in the third with a 7 yard passing touchdown before the Lobo defense came up with a safety in the fourth as Longview knocked off Killeen at Leo Buckley Stadium, 12-7. In 2003, Rogers Taylor hauled in a 41 yard passing touchdown and Quincy Grant rushed in from one yard out as Longview took out the Wildcats of Lake Highlands at Wildcat-Ram Stadium, 24-14. In 2008, Longview rushed all over the Evangel Eagles in a 52-22 beat down at Lobo Stadium in a game that was scheduled due to Hurricane Ike. However, the Lobos would later have to forfeit the game due to a player playing one play in the fourth quarter that was ineligible. The game is best known for Evangel finishing with -21 rushing yards thanks to 11 Lobo sacks. In 2015, Longview grabbed the lead in the 4th quarter thanks to a Jacorian Jones 11 yard passing touchdown followed by a two point conversion. But it wasn’t to be as Shreveport Byrd came right back and punched one in from Deuce Caston in a 22-15 Yellowjacket victory over Longview at Shreveport’s Independence Stadium. Coming into the season, Longview's Haynes King was all the talk about this 2019 Lobo squad. After week one against Lufkin, all the talk is about how impressive the defense was. The Lobos, despite a less than stellar performance from King, relied on the defense in the fourth quarter to bring home the win and they did just that. After stopping Lufkin on a 3 and out, the Lobos fumbled a punt on their own side of the field. Two drives later, including having given up another turnover with under 3 minutes to go, the Lobo defense bowed and brought home Longview's just second win at Abe Martin Stadium since 1997. The 24-21 win improved Longview to 1-0 on the season, giving them their 4th consecutive win over their arch rival Lufkin and also extended a winning streak that stretched back to last season's 16-0 State Championship squad. Longview also improved to 99-24 in this decade, a school record for wins within a decade. With the week one victory, the Lobos now welcome another long time rival to their home opener in the Marshall Mavericks. Marshall came in extremely high in the rankings for 5A Division II, but after a two hour lightning delay, saw their season start on the wrong side of things with a 27-20 setback to the hands of the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. The Mavs turned the ball over four times in their loss, that saw the Red Raiders lead throughout. Marshall and Longview will meet for the 109th time, with the two schools having met consecutively since the 1933 season, 87 seasons ago. The Lobos, riding a three-game winning streak over the Mavericks, have dominated the series in recent years running up a 17-1 series record in the last 18 years. Overall, since 1969, the Lobos are on a 41-9 run against their rivals to the East. Early in the series, it was Marshall who dominated. From 1909 to 1931, the Mavericks held an 18-2-2 record over the Lobos. The two teams did not play in 1932. Since then, Longview has controlled things apart from one six game Marshall winning streak in the late 40s into the early 50s. Since that 1932 break, Longview has stormed over the Mavericks to the tune of 59-24-3. The last five meetings between Longview and Marshall, however, has seen historical highs for the Lobos against the Mavericks. Prior to 2014, Longview had only registered 50 or more points against the Mavericks just once in their history. Since then, the Lobos have managed 56 twice and 60 once. Longview's 60 pointer last season at Maverick Stadium, was the most points the Lobos had ever scored against the Mavericks and the most ever scored at Maverick Stadium. In 1985, the Lobo defense shut down Fort Worth’s Eastern Hill Highlanders to the tune of a total of 93 yards on the night. Brian Williams hauled in a 13-yard pass to get Longview on the board. Clyde Boyd and Jason Baird were the only other Lobos to tally points, as Longview rolled to a 17-0 victory at Lobo Stadium. In 1991, Dion Marion tallied three touchdowns and Charles West hauled in another as the Killeen Kangaroos passed all over the Longview Lobos, 27-7, at Lobo Stadium. John Washington was the only Lobo to tally in the season opener, hauling in a 19-yard passing touchdown. In 1996, Waco’s Joseph Montgomery rushed in from one yard out to give the Lions a 7-0 lead in the 4th quarter. Tajuan Stoker had different ideas, however, coming right back with back to back touchdowns. Adrian Lee would return a 21-yard fumble for a score to give Longview a final score victory of 23-7 at Paul Tyson Stadium. In 2002, welcoming in the #2 team in the country, the Lobos and Evangel Eagles traded blow for blow for three quarters. Evangel took a 28-21 lead into the 4th quarter, before the Lobos took off. Alex Cammack kicked a 17-yard field goal late in the 4th quarter, before Marcus Maxey picked off a David Booty pass and preserved the 31-28 victory over Evangel that pushed Longview back into the state spotlight for the first time in five years. Joel Armstrong tallied two scores, while Chris Jones and Malcolm Kelly tallied the other two touchdowns for the Lobos. In 2013, despite trailing 7-0 after one quarter to the Mavericks of Marshall, Jeremy Powell and Ja’Mycal Hasty would each tally two touchdowns to give Longview a 26-14 victory over the Mavs at Maverick Stadium in Marshall. Longview rushed for 331 yards on the day, while holding the Mavs to 85 on the ground. It was Longview’s 13th victory in a row over their rivals from the East.

The phrase every high school football program aspires to be going into a new season. The Longview Lobos, get that honor in 2019. The Lobos finished off the 2018 football season with a staggering come from behind victory over Beaumont West Brook, 35-34, in front of over 48,000 in attendance at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium. The victory for Longview ended 81 years of frustration that has seen celebration after celebration come through the city since that December day last year. Now, the focus is reset and a new season of Texas High School Football is upon us. Longview will open as the defending 6A Division II State Champions with a trip to their arch rival Lufkin’s home stadium, that has seen many, many frustration be handed to the Lobos in recent seasons. The Lobos visit Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin for the 25th time, suffering losses in 10 of their previous 11 visits to the home of the Lufkin Panthers. Longview’s lone win at ole Abe in that span came in 2012, when Longview grabbed a stunning 45-14 victory over Lufkin. Lufkin comes into the 2019 football season after suffering another disappointing end to their football season. The Pack saw their 2018 season end at the hands of the Rangers from Frisco Lone Star, 49-21. The loss was one of just two for Lufkin last season, the only other loss being an opening week, come from behind victory by the Lobos, 35-28. The Lobos come into the 2019 football season having set every single school record imaginable in the 2018 season. Longview has won 16 consecutive games, dating back to their 2-point loss to Waco Midway in the 2017 6A Division II State Semi-Finals. The 16 wins in a row is tied for longest in school history. The 16-0 mark was a school record, among every single passing offensive records there is. Longview’s offense in 2019 will have to overcome losing Kamden Perry, who set every receiving record there is to set at Longview High School. And they’ll get a huge test right out of the gate with state ranked Lufkin, who has suffered three consecutive losses to the Lobos. Longview will be looking for their first four-game winning streak over the Panthers since they recorded five consecutive wins over Lufkin from 1989 to 1993. Since ending the 11-game losing streak to Lufkin in 2007, Longview has recorded a 11-4 over the Pack…including a 9-2 record in the previous 11 meetings. In those 11 meetings, the Lobos have won three playoff contests, two fo them by one point. Longview and Lufkin have met 82 times previously. Up until this previous run by the Lobos, the two schools were neck and neck in the overall series. But Longview’s recent dominance in victories has pushed the Lobos up to holding a four game series lead. Longview’s 41 victories over the Panthers sits 4th all-time in school history in wins over a single opponent, while Lufkin’s 37 victories over Longview sits third in school history in losses to a single opponent. The 82 meetings are the third most meetings in school history. The two programs first met in 1932, a decisive 34-0 Lufkin victory at Panther Stadium. Since that 1932 game, the two teams have not met on a football field just 12 years (1934, 1935, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1950, 1957 and 2005). Overall, the two programs have met 10 times in the post season, 20 times in non-district play and 52 times in district play. The Lufkin Panthers are one of just three teams in Longview’s history that the Lobos do not have a winning record in district contests again (the two teams are tied at 25 wins a piece and 2 ties). Longview also does not have a winning record against Gilmer (3-5-3) and Jefferson (1-1-1). The Lobos will open he 2019 football season as defending champions for the first time since 1938. Longview opened that 1938 season with a 20-6 victory over Dallas Woodrow Wilson. Their winning streak did not ended from the 1937 season (16 games) until three games into the 1938 season, a 13-13 tie against Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson. The Lobos also open the season having won eight consecutive non-district games dating back to their last visit to Abe Martin Stadium in 2016 (a 35-24 Panther victory). It will be a season of high expectations for both programs, one trying to keep their newly earned crown and another trying to reclaim old glory that has alluded them since they themselves won their crown. And while there won’t be any TV cameras showing the game live as there were to start the 2018 football season, Longview and Lufkin will no doubt put on another show for all of East Texas to see. Welcome to the 2019 Texas High School Football Season. WEEK ONE 11-6A SCHEDULE: Longview at Lufkin (John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium) Mesquite vs Lake Highlands (E.H. The Lobos dominated early and often as Malcolm Kelly and Joel Armstrong struck for two first quarter touchdowns. Longview didn’t let up and rolled to a 42-14 victory over the Mavs at Lobo Stadium, behind 243 rushing yards. The Lobos overcame a 6 fumble night in the victory, and held firm against Marshall’s vaunted passing attack that threw for 39 tries on the night. In 2013, Longview met Coppell at Allen Eagle Stadium in the Tom Laundry Classic that saw the Lobos take a 17-12 lead over the Cowboys into the 4th quarter. However, Coppell struck back in the 4th, following a Longview touchdown by Dorian Leonard to increase the lead to 24-12. The Cowboys punched over three touchdowns in the final frame, including their final touchdown with just six seconds left, to grab a 32-24 victory over the Lobos.

Thought we'd have a scrimmage thread for the scrimmage this coming Friday. Tigers visiting Lobo Stadium, with varsity scrimmage starting around 7 PM. Lobos open their defending State Champion season with their lone scrimmage of the season. Second time the two teams have ever scrimmaged against one another, with the only other time being last season up in Texarkana. Longview had a 16-0 season last season, ending with the 6A Division II State Title coming back to East Texas, while Texas High had their worst season since finishing 5-5 in 2000, with their 3-7 record. Lobos and Tigers know each other very well, having met 63 previous times on the gridiron. Longview is 40-22-1 in games between the two schools, with the Lobos having won the past 11 meetings. Texas High's last victory in Longview came in 1984, when the Tigers escaped Longview with a 6-0 victory. Texas High hasn't beaten Longview at Grim Park since 1980, a 10-8 Tiger win. Two teams in very different places right now, but hopefully it can be a solid scrimmage this Friday night at Lobo Stadium.

The Lobos return to the fateful round of last season’s disappointing loss that saw the Lobos have two tries at field goals to push themselves into the 6A Division II State Championship, only for both field goals to be missed and for Waco Midway to advance to a spot that the Lobos felt was rightfully their’s. The redemption tour continued for Longview, as they knocked out one of the toughest defensive units they’ve faced all season with a 14-0 victory over Spring Westfield at Waco ISD Stadium. The win marked Longview’s first playoff victory at Waco ISD, after falling to South Garland in 2003 in overtime and to Pflugerville on the exact date in the exact round 11 years ago in 2007. It was anything but pretty for the first time this season on offense for the Lobos. Longview was held to season lows in all categories outside of first downs, but the Lobos overcame and for the first time this season counted on their defense to bring home the W for them. Longview held the Mustangs to a mere 100 total yards on the night, and just seven first downs overall, in their first shut out of an opponent since 2015. The shut out also marked Longview’s first playoff shut out since a 24-0 victory over Tomball in 2010. The win propels Longview into the State Semi-Finals for the second straight year and the ninth time overall in school history. It will be Longview’s 5th Semi-Final trip in 15 seasons under head coach John King. On the other side of things, a completely new opponent and a completely new area that Longview has never faced a team from. Amarillo Tascosa got the big upset victory out in Lubbock with a 48-27 victory over previously undefeated Haltom. The Rebels advanced to the State Semi-Finals for the first time since 1964, after knocking off their second undefeated team in the post season, which includes Arlington and Haltom. The four playoff victories in a season is the most in Tascosa football history. Their last tripe to the State Semi-Finals included back to back losses to Garland in 1963 and 1964. Since falling to Garland 21-7 in 1964, the Rebels had made the quarterfinals just twice (1966 & 1967) and had advanced past the Area round just once (2015). This will be Tascosa’s first ever trip to AT&T Stadium, while Longview will be returning to the land of Jerry Jones for the third time after defeating Wylie 35-14 in 2015 and then falling to Mansfield Lake Ridge in 2015, 56-53, on a missed field goal in the final seconds. It’s sure to be a barn burner as the Rebels look to advance to their first ever State Championship while Longview is looking to return for the first time since 2009, and for their fifth trip overall. LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES 11.17.2017 - Longview 42, Beaumont West Brook 21 - Lobo Stadium 11.11.2016 - Beaumont West Brook 34, Longview 33 - CA Thomas Multipurpose Center FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW And so…we meet again. A grudge match for the Class 6A Division II State Championship. Longview and Beaumont West Brook had never met before the 2016 Bi-District contest. After Saturday, they will have met three consecutive years in the post season. In 2016, Longview, despite winning a co-share of the district championship, had to travel to Beaumont to take on the Bruins. The Lobos lead most of the way, grabbing a 24-14 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. The two squads continued to trade scores before a Bruin touchdown, followed by a blocked PAT return by the Lobos gave Longview a 33-27 lead late into the 4th quarter. Longview was driving to score late in that 4th quarter before a fumble by D’Crayvan Polk on the 10 yard line gave the Bruins hope. West Brook drove the rest of the way, including completing a fourth and six inside the final two minutes of play, and scored the winning touchdown and extra point to knock off the Lobos, 34-33. The two schools would meet the following year, in 2017, at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos and Bruins would battle to a 7-6 Lobo lead at halftime before a 28-point 2nd quarter would explode the Lobos into a gigantic lead. The Bruins would tally late on a 4th quarter strike, but the game was done. The Lobos rolled 42-21. And so, the 2018 edition of this new rivalry will be held on an even higher stage. The Class 6A Division II State Title game. Longview improved to a program best 15-0 with a thrilling 45-42 win over an upstart Amarillo Tascosa team. The Lobos led 35-7 at one point before the Rebels turned the switch on in the second half. Longview grabbed a 45-28 lead with five minutes left, but penalties began to hurt the Lobos and the Rebels drew within 45-35. An onside kick followed by a hook and ladder play brought the Rebs to the final score of 45-42. Longview recovered the onside kick and Haynes King picked up the lone first down needed and it was done. Longview advanced to it’s 5th all-time state championship game, and first since 2009. The Lobos will be looking to end a streak that dates back to 1937. It’s a streak that has been mocked by East Texans and the rest of the state for ages. Longview is the program that can’t finish. 81 years the Lobos have gone without a state championship. And for the 4th time since that 1937 1A State Title, the Lobos will get their shot to end it. Beaumont West Brook improved to 13-2 with a 35-30 victory over favored Austin Westlake in their State Semi-Final. Following their lone bye week of the 2018 season, the Lobos come back into play looking for revenge for their lone loss of the 2017 district campaign. Last season's 52-34 loss was just the 2nd time in team history that Longview had allowed 50 or more points to a Metroplex school and marked the lone loss for the 2018 season up until the 6A Division II State Semi-Finals where the Lobos fell to Waco Midway. Longview, 5-0 on the season, was also undefeated coming into last season's Mesquite Horn contest at 3-0. The loss helped spur the Lobos forward all the way to the second to last game of the season, before falling on a missed field goal in the dying seconds. The Lobos reached the 5-0 mark after coming from behind five separate times and taking the lead in the fourth quarter over a stubborn Rockwall side in a 42-35 shootout. Mesquite Horn has seen last season's success go completely out of their minds, as the Jags have battled to a winless 0-6 record. Despite opening the season with two State Champions in Allen and Highland Park, not much was thought of Horn's 0-2 start but since, it's been a continuing battle of disappointment. The Jags fell to Cedar Hill and a close loss to Arlington had the Jags sitting at 0-4 going into district play. The biggest upset loss was their 20-17 loss to last season's 1-9 Mesquite Skeeters. This past week, the Jags battled but couldn't overcome the dynamic duo in Rockwall as the Jackets defeated Horn, 41-35. This week's meeting marks the 12th meeting between the two schools, dating back to 2004 when Horn moved to 5A for the first time after opening in 2002. Longview dominated the series for the first seven games, before the Jags finally knocked off the Lobos 25-17 at EH Hanby Stadium in 2012. The loss in 2012 set Longview back to the 3rd spot in district, the only time Longview has not finished first or second in district play under head coach John King. After winning the next two meetings, the Lobos dropped last season's decision to mark a 9-2 overall series record. Horn comes into the contest not only winless on this season, but also winless in Lobo Stadium. Longview has won all five previous meetings between the two schools underneath the Piney Wood trees of East Texas. Horn's closest contest at the stadium was a 13-8 loss in 2010, where the Jags actually grabbed a lead into the 4th quarter before falling. Last time the Lobos and Jags met in Lobo Stadium, Longview jumped out to a 41-17 lead heading into the 4th quarter before the Jaguars battled back to make it a game scoring 20 points in the final frame. Longview is looking to improve to 6-0 on the season for the first time since 2005. The Lobos have won 10 consecutive games inside Lobo Stadium, the last loss coming to John Tyler in 2016. Longivew is 65-5 under John King inside the comfy confines of Lobo Stadium, with one loss being a forfeit. In district games, Longview is 40-1 under King at Lobo Stadium. Overall in district play, the Lobos are 79-6 under John King. Currently, the Lobos have won 11 consecutive regular season games and are currently on a seven game district winning streak. The Jags are on a seven game overall losing streak, dating back to last season after their season ending 34-24 loss to Coppell. Horn's last victory came in the bi-district round last year in a 45-24 victory over Conroe Oak Ridge. Brian Steinsiek missed a 36-yard field goal with 30 seconds remaining to preserve the Lobo win. In 1990, Andre Davis tallied twice for Longview with John Washington pulling in a 21 yard reception as the Lobos knocked off Lufkin at Lobo Stadium, 21-16. In 2001, Tommy Griffin scored quickly to lift John Tyler to a 14-0 lead, before Longview went to work. Willie Andrews ran in from 57 yards out in the 3rd quarter to lift Longview to a 17-14 lead before he tallied another in the 4th to give Longview a 24-14 over John Tyler. The win would later end Longview’s four year streak without post season play. In 2007, Longview would tally 435 yards total before a 73 yard pass reception to Travrus Brown and a 52 yard run by Johnny Garrett as Longview would knock off North Mesquite, 38-21, at Lobo Stadium. In 2012, Tory White, Antonius Sanders and L’Darrius Peterson would all tally two touchdowns in the first half, as the Lobos rushed out to a 49-6 lead over Rockwall Heath before holding on the 2nd half for a 52-27 victory over the Hawks. Longview would rush for 321 yards on the night.

That was the theme for the Lobos during their 56-28 victory over the Ruston Bearcats, in a game that saw three school records fall and two others tied. Longview's Haynes King threw for 359 passing yards to set the new school record in that category, surpassing Joel Armstrong's 314 passing yards he set in 2000 vs Tyler Lee. Behind 185 of those 359 passing yards, was Kamden Perry, who set the new school record for receiving yards in a game with those 185 yards. Each player also tied the school record for passing touchdowns in a game (5) and receiving touchdowns in a game (3). Overall, the Lobos set a school record for passing yards in a game with 379 total passing yards. Even with the school records and the 56 points, the Lobos hurt themselves a lot of times throughout the game. The Lobos, after receiving the opening kickoff, drove down the field and were in a prime position on the two yard line of Ruston to put up the opening score. However, a fumble started things off on the wrong foot. Three more fumbles would come for Longview on the night, two by high/bad snaps. 10 of Ruston's 18 points came directly from those two bad snaps. The Lobo defense also had their own struggles on the night, giving up a season high 535 yards on the night (8th most allowed in team history). But when the going went tough, the Lobos made numerous 4th down stops inside their own 25 and the Lobos were able to hold Ruston scoreless in the 4th quarter. With the win, Longview improved to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2005. And won their 9th consecutive non-district game, their longest since a 18-game non-district winning streak dating from 2001 to 2005. Next up on the slate for the Lobos is District 11-6A. Longview finished 2nd in district play last season, behind Mesquite Horn, in a season that marked just the 2nd time in 14 seasons that Longview did not win at least a share of the district crown under John King. The Lobos are 12-2 in district openers under John King, with both seasons the Lobos lost their district opener being the two seasons they did not win a district crown. Rockwall is Longview's first opponent, a team looking to win their first district crown since the 2015 season. Longview heads back to Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium for the 2nd straight season to face off against the Yellowjackets, a place the Lobos have never lost at. The Lobos are 3-0 all-time against Rockwall at the Wilk, and 5-0 overall. Last season's 31-21 victory marked just the 2nd time in the 5th previous games in Rockwall that the Lobos have allowed 21 points. The Jackets are averaging just 12.7 points a game at home against the Lobos since the two teams joined districts for the first time against one another back in 2004. But this season seems to be a different story for the Jackets. Rockwall is scoring at insane pace of 54.7 points a game, including a 73 point performance against Arlington Martin. The Jackets have scored at least 42 points in all three of their games so far this season, and likely would've in their cancelled game against Rowlett. The two schools have met a previous 8 times, with Longview winning 7 of those contests. Rockwall's only victory came in 1931, when the Jackets knocked off Longview, 20-6, in a Class B Bi-District game. Since then, Longview has rung up seven consecutive victories. The two schools have met only once in non-district play, when the Loboes of 1934 handed Rockwall a 14-7 defeat. In the 6 district victories against Rockwall, 4 of the 6 games have been decided by two scores or less. After a 4 point victory in 2004 and a 2 point victory in 2005, the Lobos blew out Rockwall in consecutive seasons by 33 and 34 points respectively. In 2016, Longview struggled to control the game and nearly fumbled it away at the end before the Lobo defense stepped up for the 36-29 victory. Last season, after struggling mightily in their first two district games, saw the Lobo defense lead the way in the form of holding Rockwall on an 18-yard drive to 0 points and also blocking a field goal. This helped Longview to grow a 24-14 lead, before Rockwall drew within 24-21 in the 4th quarter. Jalen Carr's 2nd pick of the night ended any doubt for Longview and helped the Lobos to a 31-21 win. In 1928, Sulphur Springs grabbed it’s only victory ever over the Lobos, 12-6. In 1929, Owens rushed into the end zone in the 3rd quarter to give Longview a 7-6 lead before a blocked punt recovered by Longview in their own end zone in the 4th quarter gave Marshall an 8-7 victory over the black and gold of Longview in Marshall. In 1945, Jim Hickey rushed in from 30 yards out in the 1st quarter to cap the scoring as Paris notched a 6-0 victory over the Lobos at Noyes Stadium. In 1951, Longview’s Dick Nash started the scoring with an 81 yard rush and the Lobos never looked back in a 26-7 victory over Denison at Lobo Stadium. In 1956, Fort Worth Amon Carter-Riverside picked up two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to lift them to a 31-19 victory over the Lobos at Lobo Stadium. The Eagles rushed for 321 yards on the night in the win. In 1962, David Kiergan tallied the only touchdown of the night as Longview upset Spring Branch Memorial, 8-0, at Reggie Grob Stadium in Houston. In 1984, Joe Johnson rushed for two touchdowns, and Alvernon Jones hauled in a 56-yard pass reception as the Lobos knocked off Tyler Lee at Rose Stadium, 27-3. In 1990, the Lobos pulled in three first quarter touchdowns and added a safety before the quarter ended to spark a 44-20 victory over #8 Dallas Roosevelt at Lobo Stadium. In 2007, Longview need just 91 seconds to show they were the better team as the Lobos rushed out to a 20-0 lead before you could sit in your chair in a 50-18 romp of Dallas Carter that would begin Longview’s dominance at Kincaide Stadium in Dallas. In 2012, behind 9 fumbles by Longview, the Lobos were slapped and slapped hard in a 33-7 to Mesquite for the Skeeters’ first win over Longview in 48 years. Marco Rodriguez would kick 4 field goals in the contest for Mesquite, as the Lobo D did their best to hold off the Skeeters.

It has been 12 long years since Longview walked out of Lobo Stadium with a victory against John Tyler, but the Lobos on Friday night cruised to a 41-13 victory to end John Tyler’s 3-game winning streak over the Lobos at their home stadium, and end John Tyler’s 5-game overall winning streak inside Lobo Stadium. With the win, Longview improved 3-0 on the season. That marks the first time since 2004/2005 that Longview has had back to back 3-0 starts to a season, following Longview’s 3-0 start to the 2017 season. It’s just the fifth time in 15 seasons under head coach John King that Longview has started 3-0. The other time being in 2009. The win also marked Longview’s 50th overall win against John Tyler. It’s the 2nd program that Longview has at least 50 victories against, the other being Marshall with 61 victories now. Now the Lobos turn their attention to a state that after constantly filled Longview’s non-district schedule for the better part of a decade and a half, has only been on Longview’s schedule once this decade. Longview heads to Louisiana for the first time since 2015, and travels to Ruston for the first time in 16 seasons. The Lobos and Bearcats haven’t met in 16 seasons, but they’re definitely no strangers to each other. Longview’s old offensive coordinator from the beginning of John King’s era calls on the Lobos this week as second year head coach, Jerrod Baugh, takes helm against his former head coach. It’ll be the first time for John King to face a former assistant coach as a head coach. Longview and Ruston have met 10 times previously, with the Lobos winning the last two in 2001 and 2002. The Lobos opened the series in 1992, with a 23-12 victory at Ruston. Ruston then won the next two meetings, in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, the #10 Bearcats were able to make a goal line stand against Longview to win 14-9. In 1994, the #1 ranked Bearcats took advantage of a missed extra point to win 14-13. The Lobos then won the next three. Ruston’s only win by more than a touchdown came in 1999 when they hung 51 points on the helpless Lobos. It was the first time in 47 years that Longview had given up 50 points or more. Excluding that 51-18 victory, the other three Ruston victories have come by a total of 12 points. The visit to Ruston will mark just the 2nd time since 2010 that Longview ventures to Louisiana for a non-district game, and 3rd time overall since 2010 (playoff game in Shreveport in 2010). The Lobos are looking to improve to 4-0 for the first time since finishing 10-0 in 2005. WEEK FOUR 11-6A SCHEDULE: Longview at Ruston (James Field) Mesquite vs Hurst L.D. Bell (E.H. The win over the Mavs was only the 2nd in 18 meetings against Marshall for Longview. In 1931, Marshall shutout Longview, 14-0, at Fair Park in Marshall. In 1935, Jim Whitten’s 1 yard pass reception in the first quarter was all it took as Longview knocked off El Dorado from Arkansas, 7-0, at Fair Park. In 1945, Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson handed Longview a 19-13 loss at Lobo Stadium. In 1951, Lufkin’s RV Holleman run in from 6 yards out to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead. But a missed extra point would cost Lufkin after Claude Pliler would haul in a 10 yard pass reception to tie the game. The following PAT was good and Longview upset Lufkin, 7-6, Lufkin. In 1956, Longview and Denison battled back and forth all night in a game that saw 12 touchdowns between the two teams. Pete Burks tallied 4 for the Lobos, and behind 30 first downs and 477 rushing yards, the Lobos knocked off the Yellowjackets, 47-33 at Lobo Stadium. In 1962, Henderson knocked off Longview, 22-18, at Lobo Stadium. In 1973, Mike Mock would kick a field goal and run in from 1 yard out, while Bobby Hunter and Steve Gaddis also tallied for Longview, in a 24-0 victory over Dallas Hillcrest for the Lobos. In 1979, Clifford Ward would rush in from two yards out in the first quarter before the Kangaroos of #9 ranked Killeen would tally on a 4-yard rush from George Leaito to tie the game as Longview and Killeen tied at Lobo Stadium, 7-7. In 1984, Clifford Powell, Leon Hendrix and Joe Johnson would all register scores for the Lobos as Longview would dominated the Eagles in Abilene, 21-0. In 1990, Bobby Taylor’s 75 yard pass reception in the first quarter was just the beginning for the Lobos as Longview would go on to route Carrollton Newman Smith, 49-12. The Lobos would hold the Trojans to just 135 yards on the night while tallying for 399 for themselves. In 2001, Tate Casey would pass in a 23 yard pass reception in the first quarter and Willie Andrews would rush in for two touchdowns as Longview rolled over Ruston, 35-7, at Lobo Stadium. Longview would rush for 305 yards and add an additional 116 yards passing in the rout. In 2012, Longview and Lufkin would each score two touchdowns to be tied 14-14 after 1 quarter before the Lobos took over. Longview would score three touchdowns in the 2nd quarter and roll up 446 yards overall on the night in a 45-14 beatdown of the Panthers at Abe Martin Stadium. The win would end Longview’s 15 year run without a win in Lufkin.

The Lobos, fresh off a 35-28 national televised win over long time rival Lufkin, headed into Marshall's Maverick Stadium and handed the Mavericks one of their worst losses ever in their home stadium with a 60-14 Lobo win. Longview tallied three times in the first quarter and never looked back, strolling to a point total that Longview had never reached against the Mavericks before. The 60-14 win increased Longview's lead in the series to 19 games and gave the Lobos a three game winning streak over the Mavs. Since their 2015 upset victory, Marshall has not been able to get a single thing going in the three games against the Lobos, struggling to a 157-28 scoreline in favor of Longview. The Lobos now turn their attention to another long time rival, their third in three weeks, in the John Tyler Lions. The Lobos and Lions will meet for the 95th time on Friday night as the two storied programs are two of East Texas's most traditional powers. The Lions got a little revenge on their cross town rivals last Saturday night, handing the Tyler Lee Red Raiders an ugly 65-21 loss, following an upset Red Raider victory last season that saw the Lions miss the post season for the first time since 2007. The win for Cujo seemingly rectified the Lions' opening season, 57-7, loss at the hands of DFW powerhouse Cedar Hill, where the Lions could not get a single thing going their way. The Lions come into the rivalry game having won their past five games in Lobo Stadium, three of which have come against the Lobos. Longview's last victory over the Lions at their home stadium came in 2006, when the Lobos had to come from behind to win 28-21. Since that win, the Lions have had three straight blow out victories, with all three match ups being multiple score games at halftime in favor of the Lions. Overall, the Lobos and Lions have traded victories back and forth in the last six meetings, with neither team being able to regain control of the series, following Longview's 9-game winning streak over the Lions. The two schools will meet for the 95th time, after three previously unfound games were discovered from 1917 and 1920. The series dates back to 1912, when Longview registered a 13-7 victory in Longview. The two schools will meet for the 46th time overall in Longview this coming Friday, where Longview plans to celebrate Green Out and Homecoming. The Lobos are 14-2 all-time in their Green Out contests, dating back to 2002, with the only losses coming to Allen in 2011 and John Tyler in 2014. The Lions are 1-3 in Green Out contests. Under John King, the Lobos are 14-0 in Homecoming contests with Longview's last loss coming in 2013 to Tyler Lee (18-14). This will be the first time since 1992 that John Tyler will be the Homecoming opponent for the Lobos, when Longview pulled out a 17-16 victory. Overall, the Lobos are 38-13-4 in Homecoming games. The Longview Lobos opened the 2018 football season with a national televised audience watching on, in the 82nd edition of their long standing rivalry with the Lufkin Panthers. Back and forth the two rivals went until the final three minutes when a loose fumble right at the 50 gave the Lobos a chance to bring home the win. And that’s exactly what junior quarterback Haynes King did. Throwing the ball up for grabs, Lobo receiver Kaden Kearbey came down with the game winning touchdown. Following an interception just two plays from scrimmage later, the Lobos sealed their win with their third straight win over the Panthers and their 6th in their last 7 meetings. Next up for the Lobos is another long standing rivalry with the rivals from the East, in the Marshall Mavericks. The 108th edition comes to Marshall’s Maverick Stadium after a solid win for the Mavericks in the 2nd year of the Claude Mathis era for the Mavericks. The Mavs traveled to Tyler to take on Tyler Lee and walked away with a comfortable 42-29 victory. The win in the opening game was Marshall’s first since 2015, and just their third opening game victory in the last decade. The two rivals will meet for the 108th time, and for the 86th consecutive season. A series dating back to 1909, the two schools have met every year since apart from 1913, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925 and 1932. The Lobos come into the game having won two in a row against the Mavs, and 16 of the previous 17 contests. Since the start of their 19-game winning streak over Marshall back in 1969, Longview has registered a 40-9 against the Mavericks. Inside Marshall’s Maverick Stadium has been just as impressive for the Lobos winning 7 of the last 8 games there, with the lone loss coming in 2015 with a 28-25 loss. Longview’s last visit, in 2016, resulted in a 56-7 victory over the Mavericks. WEEK TWO 11-6A SCHEDULE: Longview at Marshall (Maverick Stadium) Mesquite vs Grand Prairie (E.H. The two teams combined for a total of 16 first downs on this defensive day in Lobo Stadium. In 1979, Clifford Ward scored the first three touchdowns on the night and Nathan Harris added another in the 2nd quarter as Longview rolled past Dallas Thomas Jefferson, 27-6, in Lobo Stadium. The Patriots only were able to muster 155 yard on the night. In 1984, Joe Johnson tallied two touchdowns in the first quarter as the Lobos dominated the Highlanders of Fort Worth Eastern Hills, 38-14. Longview used a 31-point first half to take control of the game as four different Lobos scored on the night. In 1990, Killeen grabbed a 9-7 lead heading into the 4th quarter from Leo Buckley Stadium before Andre Davis took over. After a 61 yard rushing touchdown gave the Lobos the lead, Andre Davis got his 2nd on a 4th yard rush to seal the victory for Longview with a 21-9 win over the ‘Roos. Bobby Taylor’s 96 yard kickoff return was Longview’s only tally in the first half. In 2001, trailing the three-time defending 5A State Champions and #2 ranked Midland Lee, 17-13, heading into the 4th quarter, Lobo mania returned with a big celebration. The Lobos had not made the post season in four years and used that aggression to make their returning statement with a 20-point 4th quarter to knock off the Rebels in Lobo Stadium, 33-17. Fred Hawkins tallied all three touchdowns to seal Longview’s biggest victory in years. In 2007, Mark Johnson tallied twice and Johnny Garrett added three more insurance as the Longview Lobos dominated the Mavericks of Marshall from the get go in a 41-7 victory at Maverick Stadium. Longview produced four turnovers in the victory that saw Dacorris Ford return an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. In 2012, a week after losing senior quarterback Bivins Caraway, the Lobo special teams and defense pulled through in big ways to help push Longview past North Little Rock, 30-14. A 84-yard punt return and a 4th quarter blocked punt return for a touchdown highlighted the day for Longview.

In their 82nd meeting overall, the Longview Lobos will do battle with the Lufkin Panthers in the opening game of the 2018 football season. The Lobos, coming off a 13-2 season and an appearance in the 6A Division II State Semi-Finals in 2017, will be looking to continue their recent magic against the Pack. Longview has won 5 of their previous 6 meetings against Lufkin, and 8 of their last 10. Those numbers include three playoffs victories, which culminated in last season’s State Quarterfinal match up that saw the Lobos come from behind in the final minute to erase a 32-26 deficit and walk away with a 33-32 victory over their rivals. The two squads will take a break from meeting in the post season the next two seasons with Lufkin dropping to Class 5A Division I while Longview remains in Class 6A. Returning for Longview is a host of offensive support all over the field. But the highlight will undoubtedly by Longview’s junior quarterback in Haynes King. King took over for the Lobos following their 52-34 loss to Mesquite Horn four games into the 2017 season as a sophomore. King never looked back after getting his first start the next week against Tyler Lee, finishing the season with 25 passing touchdowns which ended as the 2nd best passing touchdown mark in a season by a Longview quarterback. The Panthers also returned their quarterback in Kewone Thomas, but will face to find a way to replace all everything running back in Isaiah Phillips who finished with three touchdowns and 237 yards against the Lobos last November. Longview and Lufkin will be meeting for the 12th consecutive year, in which they will have played 17 games in those 12 years. The two schools have met twice in 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2017 in recent seasons. Overall, the two schools will be meeting for the 82nd time where Longview has gained a 40-37-4 overall record in the previous 81 games. The series dates back to 1932, where the Panthers ran away with a 34-0 victory in Panther Stadium. The series has mostly remained closed through it’s nearly 90 year history, with Longview’s 8 game lead being the largest margin. Longview’s largest victory in the series came in 1958, when the Lobos take advantage of four Lufkin turnovers in a 62-0 victory in Longview. Lufkin’s largest victory in the series came in 1954, when the Panthers ran for over 440 yards and intercepted 4 Longview passes to run to a 48-7 victory. Longview and Lufkin have met 10 times in the post season, the Lobos having won 6 of the 10 including the last three. Lufkin will enter Lobo Stadium on a six game losing streak in Longview. The Panthers last win in the city of Longview came in 2003, when the Pack shut out the Lobos 14-0 in game that saw nothing but rain, rain and more rain. Since then, the Lobos have picked up a 31-24 victory in 2007, a 24-10 victory in 2011, a 55-30 victory in 2013, a 21-20 victory in 2015 and a 35-16 win in last season’s season opener. Two bitter old rivals meet for the fourth time in three years in post season play after two unexpected victories propelled their teams to the 6A Division II State Quarterfinals. The Lobos are fresh off a victory that saw them fall behind 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter only to claw their way back before halftime and take the lead, never to relinquish it. One final grasp wasn't enough for #8 Klein Collins to come from behind and Longview held onto the victory, 30-24. On the other side, the Lufkin Panthers saw themselves dominate the Spring Westfield Mustangs before nearly squandering a 14-3 lead. The Pack were able to hold on in New Caney though, and bring home a defensive 14-11 victory. The two teams now turn their attention to each other. An opening week win for the Lobos over Lufkin, 35-16, might give some fans the idea that Longview will walk away with the victory...but leave no doubt that these are two very different teams from that opening week clash. A young Lufkin squad has matured and reeled off 7 consecutive victories on the season after falling to the Woodlands in their only other blemish. The Pack are into the State Quarterfinals for the first time since 2005 and are enjoying their highest win total in a single season since 2006 when the Pack finished 11-1. Longview, on the other hand, has since an even bigger difference as injuries had decimated the Lobos early in the season and a quarterback change four weeks into the season following the loss to Mesquite Horn has propelled Longview all the way into the final 8. Longview's Haynes King became the 3rd Longview quarterback to ever throw for 20 touchdowns in a season with his four touchdown day against Klein Collins, and improved himself to 9-0 as the starter of the green and gold. Longview's Jaylin Brown, fresh off a week where he broke the record for most career receiving touchdowns in a Lobo uniform, pulled in three against the Tigers to broke the single season receiving touchdown record. The two teams have faced off 9th previous times in the playoffs, with Longview holding a 5-4 edge. The two teams have faced off four times since John King became a coach at Longview High. Once in 2002 when King was an assistant, the Pack edged the Lobos 24-21 at Rose Stadium. In 2004, in King's first season as the head coach, the Panthers came from behind to defeat Longview 31-21 at Homer Bryce Stadium after trailing entering the fourth quarter. In 2014, Longview erased a 28-0 hole against Lufkin and came from behind to win 43-42 at Rose Stadium. And in their last meeting in 2015, at Rose Stadium, the two teams were level at 10 going into halftime before Longview dominated the second half and rushed their way to a 31-10 victory. Since ending the Pack's 11-game winning streak over Longview in 2007, the Lobos have rolled to a 9-4 record over the Panthers and more recently, since 2011, Longview has gained a 7-2 record over the Pack. It's a game everyone in East Texas was hoping to see for a 6A Region II Final when the playoffs began, and it's one we're getting. What a showdown Saturday night will be! Longview sent their statement to the rest of the region following their 42-21 demolishing of the Beaumont West Brook Bruins. The Lobos held a slight 7-6 lead at halftime only to come out roaring in the 3rd quarter to the tune of a 28-point quarter and a 35-14 lead. Another touchdown added in the fourth pushed the Longview lead to 42-14 before the Bruins finally broke the scoring run in the final minutes with the second stringers in. For Longview, it avenges a loss to these same Bruins from a year quarter. A loss that saw the Lobos blow a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter down in Beaumont to fall 34-33. The win gives the Lobos their 10th 10-win season under current head coach John King, and their 60th playoff win in program history. Next up for the Lobos is a familiar playoff opponent in the Dallas Jesuit Rangers. The Lobos and Rangers meet for the 3rd time in the playoffs, after previous meetings in 2004 and 2012. In 2004, the Rangers came in with a 10-1 record to the Area round meeting as the Lobos came in 11-0. In a rain drenched game, Longview walked away with a 44-14 victory. In the 2012 meeting, a profilic offense was suppose to give the Rangers a big chance but after a back and forth 1st quarter, Longview imposed their will on Jesuit and ran away with the contest with a 57-25 win. The Lobos return to John E. Kincaide Stadium for the first time since their 2013 Bi-District contest against Rowlett. Kincaide has become a 2nd home for previous Longview teams, as the Lobos sport a 10-0 record at the Dallas ISD based stadium. 9 of those 10 victories came in the post season. Those 3 of those games saw the Lobos not score 30 points, and only 2 of the games were within two scores. Longview will be looking to advance to their 10th Regional Round appearance under John King. Last season, the Lobos saw a 10-point 4th quarter lead escape them in the later part of the quarter following a fumble inside the 10 yard line that would've sealed the deal for the Lobo gave the Bruins new life. West Brook walked away with the 34-33 victory. The loss for Longview marked the first time in 11 seasons that the Lobos failed to reach the 2nd round of the playoffs. Both John King's losses in bi-district play have come at the hands of a missed field goal as the clock ran out, and each came by a single point. Longview's last three seasons have ended at the hands of missed field goals. In 2014, Longview missed a long field goal in the ran as time ran out to fall to Mansfield Lake Ridge, 37-35. In 2015, Longview missed a chip shot field goal in the final seconds that would've sent the Lobos into overtime as they fell again to the Eagles, 56-53. And then last season's 34-33 loss to West Brook. The Lobos travel home where they are holding onto a 7-game home winning streak. Longview is 180-37-6 all-time at new Lobo Stadium, which opened in 1976. That record also includes a 62-5 mark under John King with one forfeit included. Longview will be hosting it's 3rd playoff game at Lobo Stadium where in 1984 the Lobos fell to Bryan and had to wait until 2009 to host another when Longview demolished Whitehouse 52-9. For the first time since 2009, Longview will host a home playoff game in the first round of the 2017 Class 6A Division II playoffs. That’s what the Lobos have earned following a 49-7 thrashing of Rockwall Heath. The win improves Longview to 8-1 overall on the year, with the only loss the first district game of the season when Horn handed the Lobos a butt whooping. The Jags have gone undefeated so far in district play with one game remaining, giving Longview one last hope at a district championship. But the important thing for Longview is the clinching of a home playoff game, something that they didn’t get last season despite being co-district champions. Last season, Longview was forced to travel all the way to Beaumont, Texas to take on the West Brook Bruins. Despite holding a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Lobos saw their season end on the hand of one extra point, 34-33. This season, the role will be reversed. The Bruins have lost two games in district play and now will be forced to take on the Lobos in Longview this season. But first, the Lobos must close out against a Mesquite team that’s reeling. Since starting the season off 1-1, with a dominating win over Garland 49-13, the Skeeters have seen their season under first year head coach Jeff Fleener go down the drain. The Skeeters are on a 7-game losing streak, with the closest game being two 15-point defeats to North Mesquite and John Tyler. The last three weeks fo the Skeeters, they have surrendered at least 45-points. The Lobos are coming off one of their more dominant games of the season, a 49-7 beatdown of previously 4-1 in district Rockwall Heath. The 42-point win was the largest margin of victory this season for the Lobos. After falling behind 7-0 after one quarter, the Lobos exploded in the second for a 21 point outburst. In the second half, the onslaught continued with a 28-point half. The win marks the 14th Senior Night in a row that the Lobos have won, all under current head coach John King. Longview’s last Senior Night loss came in 2003 when Longview fell, 14-0, to Lufkin. This week, the Lobos return to a place that was once kind to them…but the last three visits have been nothing but struggles. E.H. Hanby Stadium was once a perfect record for Longview, sitting at 8-0. But it’s last win came in 2011. Since, the Lobos have fallen 33-7 to Mesquite in 2012 and now back to back losses against Mesquite Horn, 25-17 in 2012 and 52-34 early this season. It’s a streak that needs to end this week for Longview, mostly for momentum to continue and going into next season where the Lobos will undoubtedly still be coupled with Mesquite ISD.
