LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES 11.22.2014 - Mansfield Lake Ridge 37 Longview 35 - Rose Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW December football has returned to Longview. After four seasons of 3 Regional rounds and 1 Area round miscues and mistakes, the Lobos dominated the Wylie Pirates from the get go in a 35-14 victory inside the comfy confines of AT&T Stadium. The win marked Longview’s first win at the home of the Cowboys since the 2nd to last game ever at Texas Stadium, a 41-30 victory over Denton Guyer in the 4A State Semi-Final. The win also pushed Longview’s record to 11-2 on the season, the 8th time the Lobos have reached at least 11 wins under head coach John King. With the win, Longview heads back to AT&T Stadium for the 5A Division I State Quarterfinal…marking the 13th time in program history the Lobos have reached the Quarterfinal round. Awaiting them is a foe that ended their season the previous year in 2014, Mansfield Lake Ridge. The Eagles come into the contest with a healthy 13-0 record, having rarely been tested on the season and are a week off from producing over 700 yards of offense against the Poteet Pirates. The Lobos will rely on their defense to win the game, a defense that has yet to give up more than four scores in a contest, and has allowed just four once all season long. The lowest the Eagles have been held to, point wise, was against Keller Fossil when they scored just 30 points. Lake Ridge has scored 50 or more points in each of the last 6 weeks. The Lobos will be looking to win their 60th overall playoff game as they enter into the contest, with their last Quarterfinal win coming against Mesquite Horn in 2010. However, the missed extra point on the Indians’ last touchdown sparked the Lobos and began a huge comeback that would see the Lobos take the lead into the locker room 21-0. Despite a 99 yard touchdown pass given up in the 3rd quarter, Longview would not be denied and rolled all over #3 and undefeated Waxahachie, 50-26.

LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES First Meeting. FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW Redemption. It was something that was on the minds of most fans heading into last Friday’s Bi-District round contest between Longview and Lufkin. Would Lufkin get similar redemption that Longview had achieved the previous season after falling in the first match up of the two teams during the regular season? For the second consecutive season the Lobos and Panthers met in the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs after meeting each other in the regular season. Unlike 2014, however, the Lobos removed any doubt of a similar ending as they took control with two 3rd quarter touchdowns and stretched it to a three touchdown deficit for the Panthers early in the 4th quarter to knock off Lufkin, 31-10. The win marked Longview’s third consecutive over the Pack since falling in embarrassing fashion to open the 2014 season, 44-14, at Abe Martin Stadium. It was Longview’s 6th win in their last 7 meeting against the Pack, and also gave them the overall playoff lead between the two schools at 5-4. The 9th meeting between the Lobos and Panthers in post season play marked the most meetings for any opponent in post season for the Lobos by a good margin. The 5 playoff wins over Lufkin is now tied for most over a single school in team history, tied now with Killeen Ellison (who Longview has a 5-1 playoff record against). The bi-district victory also gave Longview their 10th consecutive bi-district victory, a feat that seemed unrealistic just 10 years ago when Longview saw their 2005 season end to South Garland 14-13. Longview also won their 9th game of the season for the 12th consecutive year under John King, with the last time the Lobos not achieving at least 9 wins in a season coming in 2003. Now the Lobos turn towards redemption themselves as they move forward to the Area Round where a 10-1 state ranked Mansfield Summit Jaguar team awaits. Last season, the Lobos saw a Mansfield Lake Ridge squad come into Rose Stadium and knock the Lobos out of the post season before the third round for the first time since 2006. The question turns to, can Longview overcome the mini hurdle that has become the Mansfield ISD squads. The Jaguars are enjoying their best season in school history, sitting at 10-1, with it’s only loss to those Lake Ridge Eagles by a 55-35 scoreline. After a slow start in their own bi-district contest that saw them lead by just a 6-0 over Dallas Kimball, the Jags woke up in the second half and dominated the Knights 35-7. For Summit, they will be looking for their first ever area round victory. The Lobos will return to DeSoto’s Eagle Stadium for the first time since a 2010 contest against DeSoto that saw them knock off the heavily favorited #7 Eagles, 38-35, to claim a share of the district championship. Longview is 2-0 all-time at Eagle Stadium, with the Lobos’ other victory coming in a 1998 victory 16-10 over DeSoto. In 1930, Jefferson scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and Longview never recovered as the Loboes fell 19-13 to Jefferson at Fair Park. In 1931, James Hill started the score and Wendell Harper added two more touchdowns as Longview controlled the game from the get go in a 24-6 victory Jacksonville. In 1936, the Lobos dominated Marshall 34-0 at Lobo Stadium to clinch the 9-1A district title. In 1942, Dean Sanford blocked a punt and returned it for a score to set up the rest of the night as Longview dominated Marshall 28-7 at Lobo Stadium to clinch the district championship. In 1953, George Myers tallied a touchdown and took a 7-0 lead into the 2nd quarter only to see the Tigers of Texas High take over as Texarkana rolled to a 27-7 victory. In 1959, the Lobos rolled up 263 years rushing as Douglas Bruner and Ray Chancelor both scored two touchdowns in a 47-6 victory over Lufkin to secure a share of the district championship. In 1964, Lufkin helped Longview close the season with a 14-8 victory over the Lobos at Lobo Stadium. Mike Maberry’s reception was the Lobos’ lone score on the night that saw the Lobos hold the Pack to just 162 total yards on the day. In 1993, Longview battled Temple to a 7-7 tie going into halftime, but it wasn’t to be on the day as the Lobos fell 28-7 to the Wildcats behind two touchdown from Delarrius Wilson. L’Vendric Fite was Longview’s only score on the day. In 2004, Vondrell McGee opened things up in the first quarter and helped spear head a 513 yard rushing day from the Lobos as Longview rolled over Dallas Jesuit in the rain, 44-14. The win ended Jesuit’s first ever season in the UIL. In 2010, the Lobos rushed out to a 17-0 lead at halftime before a back and forth 2nd half saw the Lobos knock off the Colonels of South Garland. The Lobos held the Colonels to just 175 total yards on the day.

The Lobos and Panthers meet for the second consecutive season in the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs, and the same setting will take place as the two squads meet for the 3rd time ever at Rose Stadium in Tyler. It will be the 9th time in Lobo history that Longview has met an opponent in back to back years, the first since meeting Rowlett in back to back bi-district games in 2012 and 2013, and the second time the Lobos and Panthers will meet back to back (1936 and 1937). Along with this game being the fourth meeting between the two schools in just the past two years, Longview and Lufkin will meet for the 9th time overall in post season play. Both teams have 4 wins a’piece. This is the fourth playoff meeting since 2002, with Longview winning last year’s game in record breaking fashion with a 28 point comeback and a two point conversion to pull out the victory 43-42. This all marks just the fourth regular season rematch in Lobo history, with three of them coming against Lufkin. After squaring off in the opening week of the season, a game that saw the Lobos block an extra point to pull away with a 21-20 victory, Longview went on to grab a share of the district championship and finish the regular season with an 8-2 record for the second straight season. Lufkin, on the other hand, finished 2nd in district play and finished with a 7-3 record with one win being decided by coin flip, their best record since finishing 9-4 in 2012. Not much hasn’t already been said about Longview and Lufkin when comes to their rivalry. It’s a rivalry that dates back to 1932, and has seen pretty much everything you could imagine. From 4th quarter comebacks, like Longview’s 12 point 4th quarter to knock Lufkin out of the post season in 1940, to back and forth games, like Lufkin’s 35-32 victory in 1955 that included a 46 point 2nd half. From the district title games of the 1970s to the overtime games in 1998 and 2008. From seeing over 30,000 at SFA in the 2004 playoff game to the unreal comeback in last season’s comeback victory for Longview. It’s a 77 game history, going on 78 after Friday night, that continues to be one of the best rivalries in the state of Texas. And one that is as close as could be. Only Longview’s one point win separates the two in any statistical record. It will once again come down to who makes the most mistakes. With the district championship on the line, it was the Lions who were celebrating at the end of the night having won the tiebreaker on penetrations 2 to 1. The Lobos’ lone penetration of the night ended on a fumble at the 13 yard line. In 1964, John Tyler book ended the 1st and 4th quarters with scores in the 2nd and 3rd to escape Rose Stadium with a 14-0 victory over the Lobos. Longview was held to just 86 yards on the night. In 1970, Longview was held to just 91 yards in the season finale as the Lobos fell to Lufkin, 7-0. Clifford Davis scored the only touchdown of the night from 9 yards out in cold, rainy night at Lobo Stadium. In 1981, Longview’s Donnie Centers saved the day against Pine Tree in two ways. First, he picked off a pass with 2:13 left on the clock on his own 2-yard line as the Pirates were looking for the winning score. Then, he caught the winning touchdown pass with 1:17 left from 36 yards out and the Lobos escaped Lobo Stadium with a 13-7 victory over cross town rival Pine Tree. In 1987, Terance Carter hauled in a 62 yard pass late in the first quarter and the Lobos never looked back as they knocked off Killeen Ellison inside Texas Stadium, 28-10, in the Bi-District Round. Ray Allison, Kevin Middleton and Mike Tidwell all added scores for the Lobos. In 2004, the Lobos traveled to Williams Stadium in Garland fresh off a 10-0 regular season. With Raider players talking all week in the Dallas paper, the Lobos put quick work to their bi-district opponents, as the Vondrell McGee show took over. McGee tallied five touchdowns, four in the first half, as the Lobos ran for 403 yards rushing and tallied up 515 total yards in a 49-27 victory. In 2009, Trey Metoyer caught a 69 yard pass in the first quarter to send chills up an upset over Longview fans early on against Whitehouse. However, in the 2nd quarter, the Lobos took complete control. The Lobos rushed for 378 yards on the night racking up 508 total yards and holding the Wildcats to -4 on the night in a 52-9 victory. 7 different Lobos tallied touchdowns on the night for Longview. It was Longview’s first home playoff game since 1984. In 2010, fresh off an upset of #7 DeSoto just a week prior, the Lobos opened their post season run against David Ash and Belton. Just as fast as it had started, Longview strolls into Hallsville for the 4th all-time meeting between the Lobos and the Bobcats to end the regular season..looking to clinch a share of the district 15-5A title and clinch the top spot in Division I. If the Lobos were to win, it would be the 12th consecutive season they will enter the post season with the #1 seed in their respective division. Longview closed off their home portion of the regular season with a dominating 48-10 victory over the Wildcats of Sulphur Springs, sending the ‘Cats to their 12th straight win and clinching their 15th straight post season appearance. The win also was Longview’s 34th consecutive home district victory. Hallsville made their statement last week with a clinching victory to return to the post season with a 58-24 win over Pine Tree at Pirate Stadium. It will be the Bobcats’ 6th playoff appearance in 11 years under current head coach David Plunk. Last season, the Bobcats came into Lobo Stadium needing a victory to clinch a playoff spot…and walked out with their season ending from a 42-28 loss (coupled with Marshall defeated Sulphur Springs by a certain amount). So while the game doesn’t have as much significance for Hallsville as it did last season, Longview must win to claim that top spot in D1 and to hold onto a spot for the district title, as both Texas High and Marshall are tied with the Lobos at 5-1 in district play. In 1931, the Lobos knocked off Kilgore 19-6 at Fair Park in Longview. In 1953, the Panthers of Lufkin handed Longview a tough loss with a 14-13 victory at Panther Stadium in Lufkin. In 1959, the Lobos held a 6-0 lead going into the 4th quarter against Texas High at Grim Park. Raymond Van changed that for Texarkana with a 9 yard run to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead. However, Ray Chancelor answered immediately and the Lobos walked out of the Border City with a 14-8 victory. In 1964, the Lobos hung on strong for a 12-0 victory over Texarkana at Lobo Stadium. In 1970, Jeb Blount kicked two field goals and James Lomax ran in from two yards out as the Lobos came from behind to knock off Texas High, 12-7, at Grim Park. The Tigers were ranked 10th in the state coming in before the upset victory by Longview. In 1981, the Lobos grabbed a 10-6 lead midway through the 4th quarter on an 11 yard reception from Tony Kindle and looked poised to add to it driving to the John Tyler seven yard line. But disaster came and in an instant the Lobos lost all hope of a victory and a district title. A fumble by Gahlen Johnson on the Cujo 7 yard line gave JT the ball back only to be followed up by a 89 yard pass reception to Willie Walker. William Oliver added on with 20 seconds left from 5 yards out as the Lions knocked off Longview, 19-10. In 1987, leading by only a point at halftime..the Lobos erupted for 27 points in the 2nd half behind two touchdowns each from Ray Allison and Mike Bobo in a 34-12 victory over Pine Tree at Pirate Stadium. The Lobos rolled up 356 yards rushing and 25 first downs in the victory. In 1992, L’Vendric Fite scored from one yard out 4 seconds into the 4th quarter and Daydrion Taylor ended the night with a 21 yard interception return for the score in a 13-0 victory over Marshall. The win gave Longview it’s second straight district championship. In 1998, Fred Talley scored four touchdowns and rolled up a school record 387 yards rushing to cap his Lobo career as the Lobos dominated Nacogdoches, 27-0, at Dragon Stadium. The 387 yards remains a Lobo record as the birthday boy that night capped the greatest (statistical) career any Lobo has ever had. In 2003, Longview fumbles three times and threw two more interceptions as the #1 Lufkin Panthers held off the Lobos in a 14-0 victory at rainy Lobo Stadium. The 14-0 shut out was the last time the Lobos have been shut out. Jorvorskie Lane and Ashford Ayers scored the runs for the Pack in the victory.

After falling to rival Marshall, 28-25, the week prior for the first time in 15 years, the Lobos hosted Texas High who hadn’t beaten the Lobos since 1984. On Saturday morning, that streak continues as the Lobos rolled out to a 28-0 lead and held on for a 35-14 victory over the Tigers. The win was Longview’s 11th consecutive over Texas High and 40th overall in the series that dates back to 1922. With the win, Longview all but clinched the top seed in the Division I bracket of the playoffs with three games to play unless there are any upsets along the way. Enter, the Mount Pleasant Tigers. Mount Pleasant is fresh off an 0-10 season last year that has seen them improve greatly in Corey Homer’s second season as head coach of the Tigers and right in the thick of the 15-5A playoff race. A win against Longview would do wonders for Mount Pleasant’s playoff chances after dropping a pivotal game against the Pine Tree Pirates. The Tigers are currently tied with Hallsville for the 4th place spot but the Bobcats have the tiebreaker. The Lobos travel to Mount Pleasant for the first time since 2009, and for only the second time since 1928. In all, it will be Longview’s 5th visit to Mount Pleasant where they have yet to lose a game. The Lobos have won four in a row against the Tigers in a series that dates back to 1924 but have seen the two schools face off only 10 previous times. In those 10 meetings, Mount Pleasant has scored more than 10 points in just one contest…the one game they were able to defeat Longview (31-11 in 1930). Longview will be looking for their fifth victory in a row over the Tigers, a streak that dates back to the 1954 season. A win for Longview would keep their district championship hopes alive, as undoubtedly most eyes of Lobo fans will be glued to the Texas High/Marshall contest right up the road in Texarkana. In 1964, David Reese and Glenn Cobb scored first quarter touchdowns for the Lobos but it was all the scoring Longview would do for the day as Tyler Lee scored 22 unanswered in a 22-14 victory over Longview inside Lobo Stadium. In 1981, a 57 yard flea flicker between John Jean and Tracy Holmes in the fourth quarter sent Texas High to an upset victory over the Lobos, 14-11. Jimmy Motley grabbed the early lead for Longview on a safety before Ronnie Hunter scored the only Lobo touchdown of the day. in 1987, Marshall jumped out to a 20-7 lead before Mike Bobo went to work. Three touchdowns later, the Lobos took control. Earnest Hunter sealed the victory on a 7 yard run in the fourth quarter as the Lobos knocked off the Mavs 34-22 inside Lobo Stadium. In 1992, LaMarcus white ran for three touchdowns and 261 yards rushing to bolster Longview’s 482 yard rushing day in a 42-14 shellacking of Tyler Lee at Rose Stadium. Chad Daniels, Fred Coleman, Daydrion Taylor and Alton McAlister also scored for the Lobos in the victory. In 2009, Carey Fortson returned the opening kickoff all the way for a touchdown and the Lobos rolled all night long to a 45-0 victory over Hallsville at Bobcat Stadium. The Lobos and Mavericks meet on the gridiron for the 105th time, with Marshall’s Maverick Stadium the setting for this potential 15-5A District Championship match up. The Lobos, fresh off their first shutout since 2012 in a 51-0 romping of Greenville, head into Maverick Stadium full of confidence after back to back 51+ point margin victories to open district play. One of those 51+ point margin victories came against crosstown rival Pine Tree as the Lobos defeated Pine Tree two weeks ago 61-6 in Lobo Stadium. That same team, took Marshall down to the wire in last week’s second district game for the Mavs as Marshall struggled all night long before pulling out a 35-28 nail biter. The win improved Marshall to 2-0 in district play, and 5-0 overall for the first time since 1996. The Lobos and Mavericks will meet for the 105th time this coming Friday, and for the 83rd consecutive season…dating back to the 1933 season. And while the series is one of the longest in the state of Texas, the Lobos and Mavericks haven’t exactly been the closest of competitors. In 1968, the Mavericks defeated Longview 20-3 in Lobo Stadium…the following season began a streak that saw the Lobos defeated Marshall 19 consecutive seasons. Following 12 seasons of battling back and forth, the Lobos currently are trying to match the previous streak..holding a 14-game winning streak over the Mavericks that dates back to the 2001 season. During the streak, the Lobos and Mavericks have battled to just four contests that have been decided by two scores or less. Last season, the Lobos defeated Marshall 56-13 inside Lobo Stadium. Marshall hasn’t scored more than three scores on Longview since a 30 point night in 2009 during a 47-30 loss. The 56 points were the most a Longview team has ever scored on a Marshall squad, and just the second time the Lobos have scored 50 on Marshall. Marshall opened the series with an 18-2-2 series lead in the first 22 games from 1909 to 1931. After taking a year off in 1932, the Lobos and Mavs have met every year (82 seasons). In those games, Longview is 56-23-3. Since the original streak started in 1969, the Lobos are 37-8-0 against Marshall. The Lobos also returned to Marshall for the first time since a 26-14 victory over the Mavs in Maverick Stadium. In the new Maverick Stadium, Longview has found it almost as a home away from home…sporting a 13-4-0 record with the first match up happening in 1981 there. The Lobos haven’t lost in Marshall since 2000, where they fell 38-28. Regardless of past games, this week’s game has potential to be for the 15-5A district championship. Marshall has not won a district championship since 2005, while Longview is looking for their 11th district championship in 12 seasons under John King. In 1942, Robert Crowley’s three touchdown night spearheaded Longview to a 42-7 victory over Athens at Lobo Stadium. John Dunaway, Bill Hughes and J.T. Jeffress also added scores for the Lobos. In 1953, Robert Bayliss’ 20 yard touchdown reception from George Myers on the first play of the fourth quarter that ensured a 27-20 victory for the Lobos over Palestine inside Lobo Stadium. George Myers rushed for two touchdowns on the night as the quarterback threw for a then school record 298 yards. In 1959, a last second comeback attempt from Longview fell short as the Lobos fell to West Monroe in Rebel Stadium, 13-7. Douglas Bruner was Longview’s only score on the night on a 33 yard pass in the 4th quarter. The Lobos turned the ball over 5 times on the night in a game that saw Kim Flint’s pass intercepted with 28 seconds remaining that ended any chance of a comeback. In 1964, Longview fell to Houston Smiley, 21-18, in their first ever visit to Jones-Cowart Stadium. In 1970, James Lomax rushed for two touchdowns that saw Jeb Blount added a field goal in the 2nd and David Hiett score in the 3rd quarter as the Lobos rolled over John Tyler 27-8 at Lobo Stadium. Longview’s defense held John Tyler to just 27 yards on the night, including just 5 rushing yards, and grab two safeties in the same game. In 1981, Kenny Frazier rushed for two touchdowns in the first half inside Abe Martin Stadium in the only two scores of the game as Longview knocked off Lufkin, 12-0. In 1987, Ray Allison ran for three touchdowns and Eric Faggett added on two as well as the Lobos rushed for 308 yards rushing on the night in a 50-0 defeat of Nacogdoches. In 1992, LaMarcus White rushed for a 70 yard touchdown in the first quarter and Devin Lawson caught a 40 yard pass in the 3rd as the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 14-6 at Lobo Stadium. In 1998, in arguably the biggest match up between the old foes, the #1 Lobos and #4 Mavericks met at Lobo Stadium in a game that still is talked about to this day. Fred Talley’s 226 yard rushing night wasn’t enough to slow down Kendrick Starling who finished the night with 157 yards receiving behind two touchdowns as well as a kickoff return for a score, as the Mavericks upset Longview 35-28 in double overtime. In 2009, Tyler McCray rushed for three touchdowns behind a 453 total yard night for the Lobo offense in a 44-0 thrashing of Mount Pleasant. After ending a 40-game losing streak last season, the Lions opened the 2015 season with another victory over North Garland. Since, it’s been a lot like 2009-2013 as the Lions are now coming off a 31-21 loss to Mount Pleasant which ended the Tigers own 13-game losing streak. On the flip side, the Lobos enter the contest with a 17-game district winning streak dating back to 2012. The 17 game district winning streak is the 2nd longest in Longview’s history, tied with the 17 games from 1975 to 1977. The longest district winning streak is 36, between 2004 to 2010. The Lobos also won their 32nd consecutive home district game with the 61-6 victory over Pine Tree, dating back to 2004. In 1936, Longview rushed off to a 40-0 victory at Lobo Stadium over Mineola. It was just the 3rd game played at old Lobo Stadium. In 1942, Babin scored on a 16 yard reception in the first half and Sam Fromagus recovered a blocked punt in the end zone as Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson squeaked by Longview 14-6. Robert Crowley’s 74 yard reception in the 4th quarter was Longview’s only score of the night. In 1953, the Lobos suffered a home loss to Corsicana by a 25-14 count. In 1959, Pete Mobbs’ two yard touchdown run in the first quarter was all the Lobos would need to knock off Grand Prairie. Larry Shoemaker and Jerry Earnhardt each returned interceptions for score, while Douglas Bruner and Ray Chancelor also ran in markers as the Lobos rolled to a 32-0 victory over the Gophers. The win was Longview’s 6th in a row. In 1964, Gerald Carney’s 27 yard field goal with 5:04 remaining sent Mesquite to their first victory of the season in a 3-0 win over Longview at Lobo Stadium. The loss was Longview’s first of the season. In 1970, Longview won their 9th straight game as the Lobos rushed to a 27-0 victory over Marshall inside Lobo Stadium. Ronnie Davis scored twice in the first half before James Lomax and Larry Smith added on scores. The Mavericks were held to just 58 yards on the night in the 2nd game that would be become a 19-game winning streak for the Lobos over Marshall. In 1981, Gahlen Johnson’s three touchdown and 210 yards rushing day capped Longview’s 37-0 victory over Nacogdoches at Lobo Stadium. The Dragons were held to just 136 yards as Ronnie Hunter, Jessie Floyd and Willie Thompson also added markers for the Lobos. In 1987, Mike Bobo and Earnest Hunter both scored twice as Longview rolled to a 35-6 lead over Texas High inside Grim Park. The largest margin of victory for the Lobos inside Grim Park was capped with a touchdown by Ray Allsion and Calvin Jackson in the fourth quarter as the Lobos dominated the Tigers, 49-6. Earnest Hunter put up 163 yards in the 371 total rushing day for the Lobos. In 1992, the Lobos rolled up 292 rushing yards behind Amond Hutchings and Alton McAlister as the Lobos knocked off Ruston at James Field, 23-12. L’Vendric Fite, Chris Judy, Amond Hutchings and David Danielson scored the markers as the Lobos rolled up a 23-6 advantage late into the game. In 1998, Longview scored 10 point in the first half of play and it was all that it needed in a 10-3 victory over the Ruston Bearcats. The 10 points were the first 10 points the Cats had given up on the season after having previously outscored their opponents 158-0. Erik Hargrave kicked a first quarter touchdown before Fred Talley sealed the winning touchdown with a 28 yard reception from Trey Pierce. The win was Longview’s 14th straight regular season victory. In 2009, the #4 ranked Sulphur Springs Wildcats visited Longview’s Lobo Stadium for the first time…and were shown just how difficult it was to win there. 394 rushing yards behind two touchdowns from both Aaron Johnson and Dakota Anthony stopped Sulphur Springs’ 14-game winning streak dead in it’s tracks as the Lobos absolutely rolled to a 45-0 victory.

Following a tough 22-15 set back to Shreveport Byrd, the Lobos return home for the first time in a month. Longview’s loss was it’s first inside Independence Stadium since a 19-15 loss to #1 West Monroe. Awaiting them is their cross town rival Pine Tree, who has already equaled their entire win total from last season. The Pirates opened the season with a 37-9 victory over Jacksonville, their first over the Tribe since 2007. The Lobos and Pirates will meet for just the fourth time since 1987, and at Lobo Stadium for the first time since 1986. Pine Tree’s last visit to Lobo Stadium was a disaster for Longview, one that some claimed as the biggest upset in the history of PT Football. Tim Greaves 25-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter gave the Pirates the 10-7 lead and they held on for the 10-9 victory. Pine Tree’s only other victory over Longview (in 1982, 22-20) also came inside Lobo Stadium. Longview hasn’t defeated Pine Tree at home since 1984. The Lobos will definitely have many distractions during the pre-game, with both Homecoming and Green Out taking place. However, those distractions haven’t paid off for the opponents in years past under John King. The Lobos are a perfect 11-0 on homecoming night under John King, with the last the game was decided by a single score coming in 2010 against Mesquite Horn. Last season’s 56-7 victory over Greenville tied the second largest margin of victory for a Homecoming game in Longview history (only behind the 1991 Homecoming victory over Nacogdoches, 59-6). The last time Longview lost Homecoming came in 2003, 18-14, to #9 Tyler Lee. Pine Tree also enters Lobo Stadium for Green Out 2015. The Lobos are 11-2 all-time in Green Out contests, however Longview has lost 2 of the last 4 (2014 vs John Tyler, 41-25, and 2011 vs Allen, 42-23). The Lobos will be looking to win their 5th in a row over the Pirates, which would be the longest such margin of the series. To start the series, Longview won the first four which started in 1978 before the 1982 upset. The Lobos also will enter the contest with a long streak that has continued since King’s arrival as head coach. Longview has won 31 consecutive district home games dating back to 2003. Pine Tree’s lone victory last season came in a 31-29 victory over Mount Pleasant. The past three seasons Pine Tree is 1-16 in district play while the Lobos 16-game district winning streak overall with the last loss coming in 2012 to Mesquite Horn, 25-17. Under John King, the Lobos have just three district losses and a 60-3 district record overall. Since Longview’s first trip back to the East Texas district in 2008, Pine Tree is 3-41 overall in district contests. In 1936, hosting Fort Worth Masonic Home, the Lobos and Mighty Mites battled to a 0-0 tied inside Lobo Stadium. The tie was the only falter of the regular season for Longview. In 1948, Gene Hardin’s 11 yard run in the 3rd quarter as the lone marker in Longview’s 6-0 win over the Paris Wildcats. The win was the lone win on the season for Longview. In 1953, Denison rolled to a 28-14 victory over Longview inside Lobo Stadium. The win extended one of the longest losing streak’s in Longview history to 9 games. In 1959, Kim Flint, Douglas Bruner and Willard Wright ran over the goal line in a 22-6 victory for Longview over Arlington Heights. The Lobos held the Yellowjackets to 150 total yards on the night that saw the Lobos fumble 8 times. Heights’ only score of the night came on a 13 yard interception return. In 1964, despite holding the Bulldogs to just 55 yards on the night, the Lobos needed a 3rd quarter touchdown from James Street to put a staple on a 21-14 victory over Carthage. Mike Crawford and Don Stout added the other markers for the Lobos. In 1970, behind a 301 yard rushing night and a defensive showing that limited the Bulldogs to 66 yards, Longview strolled over Kilgore 28-0. James Lomax, Matt Dove, Ronnie Davis and Larry Smith were the touchdown men that gave Longview it’s points. In 1987, the Lobos saw a 14 point disappear to the Bulldogs of Trimble Tech before a 20 point fourth quarter paved the way for a 40-14 victory. Ray Allison’s three touchdown night capped the Lobos’ 26 point second half. In 1992, Bryan held a 21-7 lead over Longview with just 8 minutes to play inside Viking Stadium before the fireworks began. Eric Andrews 81 yard screen pass from Chris Judy kickstarted Longview’s comeback before Chad Daniels hauled in a 47 yard pass to pull within one. Judy gave Longview the lead by finding Brent Goerner wide open for the two point conversion and Longview shocked Bryan with a 22 point 4th quarter in a 29-21 victory over the Vikings. In 1993, Darren Danielson’s 30 yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining in the contest sent the Lobos to a 17-14 victory over Bryan in Lobo Stadium. L’Vendric Fite’s 26 yard run and Wardell Glaspie’s 56 yard interception return were Longview’s other scores on the night that saw both teams struggle to do much of anything offensively. In 2009, Jojo Thurman of Texas High pulled Texarkana within 3 points of the Lobos inside Grim Stadium with just 7:28 remaining. However, the Lobo offense would never give the ball back to the Tigers going on an 82 yard drive to run out the clock. Da’Cedric Hunt tallied two touchdowns along with a 17 yard run by Aaron Johnson and a 52 yard run by Keylon Shaw in a 28-25 victory over Texas High.

After throwing three interceptions and fumbling one muffed punt, the Longview Lobos improved to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2011. In the win, the Lobos won their 46th game over their arch rivals from north Tyler behind a strong running game that surpassed 300 yards. Tylan Miller’s three touchdown night gave him 5 on the young season, and shot him up into a tie for 8th all-time in touchdowns scored by a Lobo with 26. After a long night of scoreboard technical issues, searching for an officiating crew and turnovers/penalties that plagued the Lobos in the first half, Longview came out in the second half and dominated Cujo limiting the Lions to 90 yards total in the half. The 34 points Longview has allowed in the opening two games of the season is the least amount of points they’ve allowed to open a season since 2011, when they allowed just 22 points. Next up for the Lobos is a familiar location against an unfamiliar team. Independence Stadium in Shreveport has been kind towards Longview, especially in recent years. The Lobos have a 6-1 record inside the stadium, with three wins coming in the last five seasons. The last two visits for Longview to Shreveport for the Battle on the Border have been as close as you could have seen. A missed extra point was all that separated Longview and Olive Branch back in 2013, while the Lobos held off a comeback attempt from Monroe Neville last season in a 19-13 victory over the eventual State Champions from Louisiana. The opponent for the 2015 finale of the Battle on the Border will be Shreveport Byrd, a team Longview hasn’t faced off against in 54 years. The Yellowjackets are a team that, dating back to 1928, has completely dominated the Lobos historically. A 6-game losing streak is only bested by Lufkin’s 11-game winning streak over the Lobos for the longest winning streak ever against Longview. The 6 consecutive losses to open a series is the longest Longview has ever gone without at least one win to start a series. Byrd finished 12-1 last season, only losing to West Monroe in the 5A State Quarterfinals. In 1969, Longview won it’s 6th straight season opener with a 27-7 victory over the Bisons of Dallas Sunset. In 1975, a 306 yard rushing night coupled with holding the Rams to -4 yards rushing gave Longview a dominating 34-0 victory over Waco Richfield at Paul Tyson Stadium. Thomas Cook put up two scores in the 3rd quarter following Leo McCoy and Johnny Fuller touchdown’s in the first half for the Lobos. In 1980, after a scoreline first quarter…a 22 point 2nd quarter paved the way for Nathan Harris and Terry Morrow to tally up the points in a 35-19 victory for the Lobos over Fort Worth Paschal. Nathan Harris pulled in four receptions for 144 yards in the effort as the Lobos rolled to a 2-0 start. In 1986, despite a snap over the punter’s head giving the Bulldogs a safety, the Lobos steam rolled Fort Worth Trimble Tech to the tune of 28-2. Thomas Snoddy had two first half touchdowns that paved the way for the Lobos. Joe Brookins’ 70 yard interception return sealed the deal for Longview in the 2nd quarter. In 1997, trailing 7-3 at halftime from Leo Buckley Stadium in Killeen, the Lobos came out eating up clock and yards in a drive taking up over half the 3rd quarter before Shawn Byrdsong hailed in a pass from Jay Hurst to put the Lobos up 10-7. A safety late in the fourth quarter was the rest of the scoring as the Lobos knocked off Killeen 12-7 to move to 2-0. In 2003, Lake Highlands ran back the longest interception return given up by Longview in school history with a 90 yard return by the Wildcats’ Steven Coleman..but it wasn’t enough as Longview slipped past LH 24-14. Rogers Taylor and Quincy Grant gave the Lobos the two touchdown lead before the two schools traded scores the rest of the way. In 2008, a 52-22 victory over Evangel that saw the Lobos rolled up 454 yards of offense and hold the Eagles to -21 yards rushing on the day behind 11 sacks on the day for the Lobo defense, was forfeited shortly after because of an ineligible player used on one play late in the fourth quarter. Regardless, the Lobos jumped out to a 38-0 lead on their former rivals in Evangel, ranked #2 in the state coming in, before the Eagles answered on the day in the 4th quarter. The Lobo defense rolled up 115 yards in yards lost on the night. The game was originally scheduled to be played against Barbers Hill but Hurricane Ike forced the cancellation and the Lobos and Eagles were forced to scramble for opponents.

Two one point wins over your biggest rival, is something to cherish. For the second consecutive meeting, Longview knocked off their arch rival Lufkin by a single point. Following a 43-42 comeback victory in the post season last year, the Lobos one up themselves by blocking an extra point with 34 seconds remaining in the contest to send themselves to a 1-0 record in the opening game of the 2015 season. The 21-20 victory over the Pack gives the Lobos a series lead over Lufkin for the first time since 2003, 37-36-4. The win also marked John King’s 121st victory as the head coach of the Lobos, moving him into sole possession of first overall in wins by a head coach in Longview history. But the road following the victory over the #10 ranked Panthers doesn’t get any easier as they travel back to Tyler for the third time in their past four games where the John Tyler Lions, fresh off an opening season loss to Plano are awaiting them. The 89th edition of Longview and John Tyler will cap the Trinity Mother Frances Classic on Saturday night, with games on Thursday and Friday at Rose Stadium prior to Saturday. The visit to Rose Stadium will mark the 70th overall visit, not counting the old Rose Stadium with this stadium opening in the late 1940s. In the first 69 visits, the Lobos have posted a 42-26-1 overall record with last season’s two point loss to Lake Ridge ending a 15-game winning streak in Tyler. The Lobos still have yet to lose to a Tyler ISD squad inside Rose Stadium since October of 2002 against Tyler Lee (28-21). The last time Longview lost against John Tyler in Rose Stadium came 15 years ago in 2000, by a 27-14 count. Longview and John will meet for just the fourth time in the previous 8 years, after having met every season from 1931 to 2007. A series that Longview took control of with a 9-game winning streak from 2001 to 2007, has gone back and forth the past three meetings. John Tyler rolled to a 41-25 victory last season inside Lobo Stadium, marking the second consecutive victory in Longview for Cujo. Coming into the game, the Lobos will be looking to start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2011, where they knocked off Marshall and John Tyler on consecutive weeks. The Lions will be looking for a 2-game winning streak over the Lobos, which hasn’t happened since John Tyler won three straight from 1998 to 2000. Kilgore jumped out to a shocking 18-7 lead midway through the 3rd quarter before Longview stormed back to steal a 21-18 victory. in 1997, Longview opened their state finalist season with a 41-14 victory over the Waco Lions behind two touchdowns from Fred Talley and two from Jay Hurst. The win was Longview’s 9th straight over the Lions. In 2003, Malcolm Kelly, Chris Jones and three Jerrel Williams touchdowns spurred the Lobos to a 35-12 victory over Monroe Neville. Longview tallied up 473 total yards in the victory. In 2008, Longview held Tyler Lee to 111 total yards on the night and added two 4th quarter touchdowns to send the Lobos to a 21-0 victory over Tyler Lee. In 2009, the Lobos and Red Raiders concluded the Trinity Mother Frances Classic with a dominating victory by the Lobos, 31-7. The win gave Longview their 7th consecutive over Lee. In 2014, John Tyler overcame a slow start to grab their second straight victory inside Lobo Stadium with a 41-25 victory. The 40 points marked the first time since 1996 that JT had scored 40 or more on Longview.

The Lobos walked into Sulphur Springs on Friday night looking for their 10th district championship in 11 seasons under head coach John King, and did just that as they clinched at least a share knocking the Wildcats from their four game winning streak with a dominating 49-6 victory. The win also clinched the 11th consecutive season of having a #1 seed heading into the post season, with the last time Longview being a #2 coming in 2003. The Lobos now head home to face the Hallsville Bobcats in the district finale and for senior night at Lobo Stadium. Longview has won 10 straight senior night contests, last losing to Lufkin in 2003. The Lobos will be looking to clinch the outright district title, while Hallsville will be looking to clinch a playoff berth. The two schools have met only twice in their history, with the Lobos outscoring the Bobcats 66 to 7 in the two games. Hallsville's only score came in the 2008 meeting, midway through the 4th quarter to draw the game back to a 14-7 contest before Tyler McCray finished it off on the following series. Longview comes in having scored 50 or more point in four of their regular season games, tied for a school record for most 50 or more point contests in the regular season with the 1927 squad. Head coach John King heads into the Hallsville game just two wins before former head coach Doug Cox for most wins in by a coach in school history. King will be looking to become the 2nd coach in Longview history to wrap up 60 or more district wins. ON THE LINE: A win for Longview clinches an outright district championship. A win for Hallsville clinched a playoff berth, however a loss does not eliminate them. In 1947, Fox Cashell's 9-yard field goal in the second quarter boosted Longview to a 3-0 victory over the Tyler Lions in Lobo Stadium. Longview improved to 8-0 on the year with the victory. In 1958, Longview's playoff hopes came crashing down with a 30-0 loss against Texas High inside Lobo Stadium. In 1969, the Lobos rallied to a 21-18 victory over Lufkin at Panther Stadium. In 1980, Ronnie Hunter slammed home three rushing touchdowns to lift Longview to a 21-6 homecoming victory over John Tyler. In 1986, Tim Greaves's 25-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter gave Pine Tree the 10-7 lead and the Pirates held a comeback off as Pine Tree ended Longview's hopes of a district championship with a 10-9 victory in Lobo Stadium. In 1997, Longview fell behind 14-0 after one quarter before roasting the Mavericks 40-7 the rest of the way. Fred Talley scored three touchdowns, including a 63-yard run in the second quarter to give Longview the lead as Longview clinched the perfect regular season with a 40-21 victory over arch rival Marshall.

And boy did they get one. Grim Park has a way of taking on a life of its own an it almost proved fatal for the Lobos as they saw a 13-0 and 21-7 lead disappear into single digits heading into the final 12 minutes of play. But the Lobos grabbed the chances that were put in front of them against Texas High in the fourth quarter and ran away with a 38-20 victory, scoring 17 straight points in less than 5 minutes of game play to seal it. The win marked Longview's 10th consecutive over Texarkana, and their 7th in a row at Tiger Stadium at Grim Park. Longview has not lost in Texarkana since 1980, despite some unreal tests on the grass field. Despite never trailing, it no doubt showed how much work the Lobos still have to do before they showdown in the bi-district round with a 16-5A foe. As the Lobos defeat one Tiger…another one comes along as the Mount Pleasant Tigers visit the new Lobo Stadium for just the second time. The two times will meet for the 10th time overall on Friday, but only the third time since 1954 and fourth time since 1930. In the two previous recent district contests, Longview ran away with both by a 95-7 combined score. In 2008, it took just one play from scrimmage to put the Lobos on top. In 2009…it took two. The Lobos have historically dominated the series, with only a 1928 tie and a 1930 loss preventing the Lobos have holding a perfect record against Mount Pleasant. Only one of Longview's win was not decided by at least three scores. As Longview turned their season around after two season opening losses, the Tigers have yet to do so. Mount Pleasant heads into their contest against Longview on a 7 game losing streak (0-7) this season, and having lost 13 of their previous 14 contests with only last season's season finale win over Pine Tree (49-34) being the victory. Despite the losing streak, the Tigers have definitely been in some close ball games…falling to Jacksonville and Pine Tree by just two, Hallsville by 12, and Greenville by just a single point after leading in the 4th quarter against the Lions. Mount Pleasant heads into Lobo Stadium as the Lobos look to clinch a playoff spot, keep top spot in the district and while the Lobos are riding a 29 game home district winning streak. The game against Texas High marked Coach King's 60th district contest as Longview's head coach..and the win improved him to 57-3 in those district games (95% winning percentage). A win tonight would all but clinch up a district championship, but the main thing for Longview at this point is to continue to learn and improve. ON THE LINE: A win for Longview clinches a playoff spot for the 14th consecutive season. A loss for Mount Pleasant eliminates them from post season competition. However, an ineligible player was found on the Gilmer squad and a 2-0 victory was given to Longview..giving them their first ever district title. In 1930, Mount Pleasant knocked off Longview for the first time, 31-11. In 1941, Kilgore defeated Longview 20-0 inside Lobo Stadium, giving the Bulldogs their third straight win over the Lobos. In 1947, Amy Rogers pulled in a 42-yard pass from Rex Stuckey early in the third quarter and that was all that was needed as Longview improved to 7-0 on the year with a 7-0 victory over Kilgore. In 1952, Longview destroyed Nacogdoches 39-0 for their second win of the season only to see it erased with a 2-0 forfeit loss following Billy Dodson being ruled ineligible a few days later. In 1969, after falling behind by two points early in the fourth quarter, a 48-yard touchdown run by Rodney Coxx and a 9-yard touchdown run by Mike Northcutt in the finale frame lifted Longview to a 24-19 victory over Bishop Lynch. In 1975, the Lobos improved to 8-0 with a 21-8 victory over the Tigers from Texas High at Grim Park. In 1980, penalties did the Lobos in after falling behind 10-0 to Texas High. Despite having a chance to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, the Lobos ended the night with 78 yards in penalty yards as the Tigers remained undefeated 10-8. In 1986, Joe Johnson and Johnson Harris each scored 1-yard touchdown runs as the Lobos, somehow, found a way to defeat Marshall for the 18th consecutive season despite 5 turnovers and finishing the night with -2 passing yards. In 1997, Fred Talley rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns, including a 95-yard touchdown run, as the Lobos remained undefeated at 8-0 with a 42-3 victory over Nacogdoches at Dragon Stadium. In 1998, Longview fell behind 17-0 after one quarter but fought back to pull within three in the fourth quarter. But that was as close as they would get, despite getting the ball with 2 minutes remaining, as the Red Raiders remained perfect at 8-0 with a 31-28 victory over the Lobos. In 2003, the Lobos raced out to a 20-6 lead at the break only to see touchdowns by Antoine Bush and DeBrennon Erskine in the final 1:29 of play to pull the Lions to within one of a tie. However, Adrian Brooks blocked the following extra point with 11 seconds left and Longview held on to clinch a post season berth with the 20-19 win. In 2008, Tyler McCray scored two touchdowns and Aaron Johnson added on another as Longview escaped with a close victory over the Hallsville Bobcats, 21-7.

That's what Longview accomplished on Friday night, ripping the Marshall Mavericks to the tune of 56-13 inside Lobo Stadium. Longview, for the sixth consecutive game, scored on their first drive of the game as they grabbed a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. Longview has scored at least 21 points in the first quarter now in three consecutive ball games and has outscored their district 15-5A opponents 133-13 in the first half this season. Even more impressive for Longview, the Lobos scored 50 or more in their third consecutive contest...a record that had not been reached by a Lobo squad since the 1927 team. The win marked the 58th overall over the Mavs, and was Longview's 29th consecutive home district win dating back to the 2003 season. John King is now 56-3 in district ballgames. So now, after recording #14 in a row over the Mavs, the Lobos look toward continuing another streak. Longview has won nine in a row over the Tigers of Texarkana, and 11 of their previous 12 meetings. The Tigers last knocked off Longview in 1984, with a 6-0 win at Lobo Stadium. Longview strolls into Grim Park holding a six game winning streak at the venue dating back to 1980 when the Lobos fell 10-8 to the Tigers. Texas High has had an up and down season thus far. The Tigers could easily be sitting at 6-0 on the season, but just as easily could be staring 1-5 in the face. The only contest decided by more than 10 points so far has been their 42-29 win over Sulphur Springs. The Tigers started out at 1-2 in non-district, barely losing to Whitehouse (by 3) and Arkansas High (by 6 in OT) and knocking off Kilgore (by 6 in triple OT). Since knocking off the Bulldogs, the Tigers have gone 3-0 in 15-5A play taking advantage of turnovers more so than anything. The Tigers trailed 7-0 and 14-7 at Pine Tree and were tied 21-21 before they pulled away late for the 10 point win over the Pirates. The 31 points allowed by Pine Tree was the first time this season they had not allowed at least 40 points, and the second time the Pirates held their opponents under 50. Longview and Texas High will meet for just the fifth time in the last 25 seasons, and in district play for just the third time. The two schools met for 38 consecutive season between 1952 and 1989 before the Tigers dropped to 4A. The 61 meetings is fourth most in Longview's school history against an opponent, behind only Marshall, John Tyler and Lufkin. A win for either squad will put them in the driver's seat for the district championship, a mark the Lobos are looking to win for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons. Longview has won 12 consecutive district ball games overall. Texas High has won 8 straight. In 1947, Longview dominated the Henderson Lions from start to finish as they grabbed a 33-0 victory. In 1952, the Lobos dropped to 1-4 on the season as the Wildcats of Palestine posted a 20-6 victory over Longview in Lobo Stadium. In 1958, Mack Thomas put Longview on the board in the second quarter with a one yard run, only to see Dan Pearson level the game on a 60-yard punt return in the 3rd quarter. The visitors left Stark Stadium feeling as if they had missed out on an opportunity as the Orange Tigers held off the visiting Lobos, 6-6. In 1969, Rodney Hill booted a 34-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining ending any chance of a Marshall post season berth as the Lobos grabbed a 17-16 victory over the Mavericks in Marshall. In 1975, Leo McCoy tallied two touchdowns with Llewellyn Fambles grabbing another as the Lobos handed John Tyler a 23-0 loss in the second to last game at old Lobo Stadium. In 1986, a close game saw the game end as close as possible as the Lobos and Lufkin Panthers battled to a 10-10 tie on homecoming night. In 1997, Shawn Byrdsong tallied on a 95 yard pass reception, then added another later in the third quarter as the Lobos put up 521 yards total offense in a 42-25 homecoming victory over the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. In 2003, after a 7-7 first quarter, the Lufkin Panthers took over play in the second quarter posting 25 points with E.J Shankle's 79 yard run and Jorvorskie Lane's 65 yard pass reception leading the way. The Panthers held on in the second half with the final, 35-21 Lufkin. In 2008, a back and forth affair saw the Lobos and Mavericks tied at 21 all at the break. But in the second half, it was all Longview. 29 unanswered points in the second half of play gave Longview a dominating 50-21 victory over their long time rivals.

The Lobos and Panthers first met in 1932, where Lufkin walked away with a 34-0 victory at old Panther Stadium. Since then, the two schools have fought to a even line with last season's victory by Longview evening up the series at 35 all with four ties in between. Only two teams have played Longview more than the Lufkin Panthers have, the two being Marshall and John Tyler, but no school has played Longview more in the post season with 7 meetings in the post season between the two schools. After a two year run of being district teammates, the next five meetings between the two schools came in bi-district action, with Longview winning 3 of the 5. The next two postseason match ups came in 2002 and 2004, with Lufkin walking away with both games. Last season, Lufkin took a 3-0 lead after the end of the first quarter before the Lobos exploded in the second for a school record 35 points to take a 35-10 halftime lead. Battling back and forth in the second half, the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 55-30. The 55 points marked the second time in school history the Lobos had scored 50 on Lufkin, the last being in a 62-0 drumming in 1958. Longview managed 490 total yards against the Lufkin defense, the second consecutive season the Lobos have netted over 445 yards against a Panther team. The win also marked Longview's fourth consecutive win over the Panthers at Lobo Stadium dating back to a 31-24 win in 2007. The current three game winning streak for Lobos started in 2011 when Longview rebounded from a 10-0 deficit to knock off the Panthers 24-10. The two touchdown victory was the first time since 1997 that Longview had knocked off the Panthers by at least two scores. The next season, the Lobos improved upon stretch by defeating the Panthers by a 45-14 score..the largest margin of victory for Longview (31) since a 44-6 victory at Lobo Stadium in 1976. The more important stat for Longview though was their first win at Abe Martin Stadium since 1999, a span of eight games. The 45 points scored at Abe Martin Stadium by Longview was the most the Lobos had ever scored there, and the most scored in Lufkin since a 47-6 victory in 1959. Both teams enter the 2014 dropping down to the newly created Class 5A. For Longview, a return to their 2008/2009 district where Longview went 12-0 in district play between the two seasons. For Lufkin, they drop from the top classification for the first time since the 1920s. The Lobos are coming off a season that saw their own mistakes due them in with two defensive touchdowns being the final marker that ended a Longview season that set numerous school passing records. John King returns for his 11th season as Longview head coach, lacking just 10 victories to become the winningest coach in school history behind Doug Cox. The Lobos are 5-5 under John King in opening week play, having lost their previous two to Coppell. However, historically, Longview is quite impressive in opening week play. The Lobos have managed a 66-31-7 all-time record in those games, with the longest streak of consecutive wins ending in 1983 after 19 straight wins. The Panthers come into the 2014 season looking to rebound from their most disappointing season in quite some time. Todd Quick returns for his 3rd season as Pack head coach, looking to rebound from Lufkin's first losing season since finishing 4-6-1 in 1995. Lufkin saw their opening week unbeaten streak end in 2012 at 19 straight games when John Tyler knocked off the Panthers, 35-21. Lufkin returned to their winning ways in opening week games last season though, as the Panthers put on a show rebounding from an early deficit and finishing off with a 52-28 victory over the Lions. Despite the recent success for Longview against Lufkin, and their last visit to Abe Martin being a victory, Lufkin itself has not been a kind place for the Lobos in the past decade. Longview had one of the more impressive records at Abe Martin Stadium following their 28-17 victory there in 1997, improving their then record at the stadium to 9-4-0. Since then, a train wreck. The first five games of their eight game losing streak in Lufkin, the Lobos saw the Panthers completely dominate the first half of play only to have to claw their way back into it to make the game look more respectable than it probably should've been, with all five of the games being won by at least two scores. The closest Longview came to winning during the losing streak came in 2007, with Lufkin rallying from down 13 to score with 1:09 remaining in the game to win 16-13. In 2010, the Lobos again had a 13-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, only to have Lufkin hold the Lobos on fourth down at the Panther four as time ran out to secure the Pack 28-21 win. Longview will be rolling into Lufkin to start the 2014 looking for their first four game winning streak over the Panthers since a five game winning streak that stretched from 1989 to 1993. The longest winning streak for the Lobos in the series was a six game winning streak from 1980 to 1985. Lufkin's, of course, is their infamous 11-game winning streak that stretched from 1999 to 2007. The 11-game losing streak is by far the longest losing streak to a single team in school history, with only two other schools even reaching the six game mark (Marshall and Shreveport Byrd). Seven Maverick turnovers did the job as the Lobos grabbed a 28-0 halftime lead en route to a 49-16 season opening victory. Vondrell McGee marked his first two touchdowns as a Lobo in the second half. In 2008, Longview opened the season at the eventual state champion Allen Eagles and battled to a 7-7 half-time scoreline. However, five fumbles (one lost) did Longview in during the second half as two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter were all the Eagles needed to knock off the Lobos 21-7. Longview out gained the Eagles 343 to 260 but it wasn't enough. The loss was the third straight season opening game loss for the Lobos, the longest stretch of opening season game losses since the early 1950s.
