Two one point wins over your biggest rival, is something to cherish. For the second consecutive meeting, Longview knocked off their arch rival Lufkin by a single point. Following a 43-42 comeback victory in the post season last year, the Lobos one up themselves by blocking an extra point with 34 seconds remaining in the contest to send themselves to a 1-0 record in the opening game of the 2015 season. The 21-20 victory over the Pack gives the Lobos a series lead over Lufkin for the first time since 2003, 37-36-4. The win also marked John King’s 121st victory as the head coach of the Lobos, moving him into sole possession of first overall in wins by a head coach in Longview history. But the road following the victory over the #10 ranked Panthers doesn’t get any easier as they travel back to Tyler for the third time in their past four games where the John Tyler Lions, fresh off an opening season loss to Plano are awaiting them. The 89th edition of Longview and John Tyler will cap the Trinity Mother Frances Classic on Saturday night, with games on Thursday and Friday at Rose Stadium prior to Saturday. The visit to Rose Stadium will mark the 70th overall visit, not counting the old Rose Stadium with this stadium opening in the late 1940s. In the first 69 visits, the Lobos have posted a 42-26-1 overall record with last season’s two point loss to Lake Ridge ending a 15-game winning streak in Tyler. In 1980, Clifford Ward tallied two first quarter touchdowns before the Lobos and Highlanders traded touchdowns back and forth the remainder of the game with Longview opening the season with a 28-13 victory over Fort Worth Eastern Hills. In 1986, the Lobos and Bulldogs met for just second time in 31 years. Kilgore jumped out to a shocking 18-7 lead midway through the 3rd quarter before Longview stormed back to steal a 21-18 victory. in 1997, Longview opened their state finalist season with a 41-14 victory over the Waco Lions behind two touchdowns from Fred Talley and two from Jay Hurst. The win was Longview’s 9th straight over the Lions. In 2003, Malcolm Kelly, Chris Jones and three Jerrel Williams touchdowns spurred the Lobos to a 35-12 victory over Monroe Neville. Longview tallied up 473 total yards in the victory. In 2008, Longview held Tyler Lee to 111 total yards on the night and added two 4th quarter touchdowns to send the Lobos to a 21-0 victory over Tyler Lee. In 2009, the Lobos and Red Raiders concluded the Trinity Mother Frances Classic with a dominating victory by the Lobos, 31-7. The win gave Longview their 7th consecutive over Lee. In 2014, John Tyler overcame a slow start to grab their second straight victory inside Lobo Stadium with a 41-25 victory. The 40 points marked the first time since 1996 that JT had scored 40 or more on Longview.

The Lobos walked into Sulphur Springs on Friday night looking for their 10th district championship in 11 seasons under head coach John King, and did just that as they clinched at least a share knocking the Wildcats from their four game winning streak with a dominating 49-6 victory. The win also clinched the 11th consecutive season of having a #1 seed heading into the post season, with the last time Longview being a #2 coming in 2003. The Lobos now head home to face the Hallsville Bobcats in the district finale and for senior night at Lobo Stadium. Longview has won 10 straight senior night contests, last losing to Lufkin in 2003. The Lobos will be looking to clinch the outright district title, while Hallsville will be looking to clinch a playoff berth. The two schools have met only twice in their history, with the Lobos outscoring the Bobcats 66 to 7 in the two games. Hallsville's only score came in the 2008 meeting, midway through the 4th quarter to draw the game back to a 14-7 contest before Tyler McCray finished it off on the following series. Longview comes in having scored 50 or more point in four of their regular season games, tied for a school record for most 50 or more point contests in the regular season with the 1927 squad. Head coach John King heads into the Hallsville game just two wins before former head coach Doug Cox for most wins in by a coach in school history. In 1930, the Lobos rolled to a 2-7 victory over Atlanta at Fair Park. In 1947, Fox Cashell's 9-yard field goal in the second quarter boosted Longview to a 3-0 victory over the Tyler Lions in Lobo Stadium. Longview improved to 8-0 on the year with the victory. In 1958, Longview's playoff hopes came crashing down with a 30-0 loss against Texas High inside Lobo Stadium. In 1969, the Lobos rallied to a 21-18 victory over Lufkin at Panther Stadium. In 1980, Ronnie Hunter slammed home three rushing touchdowns to lift Longview to a 21-6 homecoming victory over John Tyler. In 1986, Tim Greaves's 25-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter gave Pine Tree the 10-7 lead and the Pirates held a comeback off as Pine Tree ended Longview's hopes of a district championship with a 10-9 victory in Lobo Stadium. In 1997, Longview fell behind 14-0 after one quarter before roasting the Mavericks 40-7 the rest of the way. Fred Talley scored three touchdowns, including a 63-yard run in the second quarter to give Longview the lead as Longview clinched the perfect regular season with a 40-21 victory over arch rival Marshall.

And boy did they get one. Grim Park has a way of taking on a life of its own an it almost proved fatal for the Lobos as they saw a 13-0 and 21-7 lead disappear into single digits heading into the final 12 minutes of play. But the Lobos grabbed the chances that were put in front of them against Texas High in the fourth quarter and ran away with a 38-20 victory, scoring 17 straight points in less than 5 minutes of game play to seal it. The win marked Longview's 10th consecutive over Texarkana, and their 7th in a row at Tiger Stadium at Grim Park. Longview has not lost in Texarkana since 1980, despite some unreal tests on the grass field. Despite never trailing, it no doubt showed how much work the Lobos still have to do before they showdown in the bi-district round with a 16-5A foe. As the Lobos defeat one Tiger…another one comes along as the Mount Pleasant Tigers visit the new Lobo Stadium for just the second time. The two times will meet for the 10th time overall on Friday, but only the third time since 1954 and fourth time since 1930. In the two previous recent district contests, Longview ran away with both by a 95-7 combined score. In 2008, it took just one play from scrimmage to put the Lobos on top. In 2009…it took two. The Lobos have historically dominated the series, with only a 1928 tie and a 1930 loss preventing the Lobos have holding a perfect record against Mount Pleasant. Only one of Longview's win was not decided by at least three scores. As Longview turned their season around after two season opening losses, the Tigers have yet to do so. Mount Pleasant heads into their contest against Longview on a 7 game losing streak (0-7) this season, and having lost 13 of their previous 14 contests with only last season's season finale win over Pine Tree (49-34) being the victory. Despite the losing streak, the Tigers have definitely been in some close ball games…falling to Jacksonville and Pine Tree by just two, Hallsville by 12, and Greenville by just a single point after leading in the 4th quarter against the Lions. Mount Pleasant heads into Lobo Stadium as the Lobos look to clinch a playoff spot, keep top spot in the district and while the Lobos are riding a 29 game home district winning streak. The game against Texas High marked Coach King's 60th district contest as Longview's head coach..and the win improved him to 57-3 in those district games (95% winning percentage). A win tonight would all but clinch up a district championship, but the main thing for Longview at this point is to continue to learn and improve. ON THE LINE: A win for Longview clinches a playoff spot for the 14th consecutive season. A loss for Mount Pleasant eliminates them from post season competition. However, an ineligible player was found on the Gilmer squad and a 2-0 victory was given to Longview..giving them their first ever district title. In 1930, Mount Pleasant knocked off Longview for the first time, 31-11. In 1941, Kilgore defeated Longview 20-0 inside Lobo Stadium, giving the Bulldogs their third straight win over the Lobos. In 1947, Amy Rogers pulled in a 42-yard pass from Rex Stuckey early in the third quarter and that was all that was needed as Longview improved to 7-0 on the year with a 7-0 victory over Kilgore. In 1952, Longview destroyed Nacogdoches 39-0 for their second win of the season only to see it erased with a 2-0 forfeit loss following Billy Dodson being ruled ineligible a few days later. In 1969, after falling behind by two points early in the fourth quarter, a 48-yard touchdown run by Rodney Coxx and a 9-yard touchdown run by Mike Northcutt in the finale frame lifted Longview to a 24-19 victory over Bishop Lynch. In 1975, the Lobos improved to 8-0 with a 21-8 victory over the Tigers from Texas High at Grim Park. In 1980, penalties did the Lobos in after falling behind 10-0 to Texas High. Despite having a chance to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, the Lobos ended the night with 78 yards in penalty yards as the Tigers remained undefeated 10-8. In 1986, Joe Johnson and Johnson Harris each scored 1-yard touchdown runs as the Lobos, somehow, found a way to defeat Marshall for the 18th consecutive season despite 5 turnovers and finishing the night with -2 passing yards. In 1997, Fred Talley rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns, including a 95-yard touchdown run, as the Lobos remained undefeated at 8-0 with a 42-3 victory over Nacogdoches at Dragon Stadium. In 1998, Longview fell behind 17-0 after one quarter but fought back to pull within three in the fourth quarter. But that was as close as they would get, despite getting the ball with 2 minutes remaining, as the Red Raiders remained perfect at 8-0 with a 31-28 victory over the Lobos. In 2003, the Lobos raced out to a 20-6 lead at the break only to see touchdowns by Antoine Bush and DeBrennon Erskine in the final 1:29 of play to pull the Lions to within one of a tie. However, Adrian Brooks blocked the following extra point with 11 seconds left and Longview held on to clinch a post season berth with the 20-19 win. In 2008, Tyler McCray scored two touchdowns and Aaron Johnson added on another as Longview escaped with a close victory over the Hallsville Bobcats, 21-7.

Even more impressive for Longview, the Lobos scored 50 or more in their third consecutive contest...a record that had not been reached by a Lobo squad since the 1927 team. The win marked the 58th overall over the Mavs, and was Longview's 29th consecutive home district win dating back to the 2003 season. John King is now 56-3 in district ballgames. So now, after recording #14 in a row over the Mavs, the Lobos look toward continuing another streak. Longview has won nine in a row over the Tigers of Texarkana, and 11 of their previous 12 meetings. The Tigers last knocked off Longview in 1984, with a 6-0 win at Lobo Stadium. Longview strolls into Grim Park holding a six game winning streak at the venue dating back to 1980 when the Lobos fell 10-8 to the Tigers. Texas High has had an up and down season thus far. The Tigers could easily be sitting at 6-0 on the season, but just as easily could be staring 1-5 in the face. The only contest decided by more than 10 points so far has been their 42-29 win over Sulphur Springs. The Tigers started out at 1-2 in non-district, barely losing to Whitehouse (by 3) and Arkansas High (by 6 in OT) and knocking off Kilgore (by 6 in triple OT). In 1986, a close game saw the game end as close as possible as the Lobos and Lufkin Panthers battled to a 10-10 tie on homecoming night. In 1997, Shawn Byrdsong tallied on a 95 yard pass reception, then added another later in the third quarter as the Lobos put up 521 yards total offense in a 42-25 homecoming victory over the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. In 2003, after a 7-7 first quarter, the Lufkin Panthers took over play in the second quarter posting 25 points with E.J Shankle's 79 yard run and Jorvorskie Lane's 65 yard pass reception leading the way. In 1980, Clifford Ward rushed for 131 yards and two first quarter touchdowns to lead Longview to a 28-13 win over Fort Worth Eastern Hills. Ronnie Hunter and Zane Butter tacked on the other two touchdowns for Longview. In 1986, trailing by 11 midway through the third quarter, two touchdowns by Scott Combest and Thomas Snoddy lifted Longview to a 21-18 victory over Kilgore at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos and Panthers first met in 1932, where Lufkin walked away with a 34-0 victory at old Panther Stadium. Since then, the two schools have fought to a even line with last season's victory by Longview evening up the series at 35 all with four ties in between. Only two teams have played Longview more than the Lufkin Panthers have, the two being Marshall and John Tyler, but no school has played Longview more in the post season with 7 meetings in the post season between the two schools. After a two year run of being district teammates, the next five meetings between the two schools came in bi-district action, with Longview winning 3 of the 5. The next two postseason match ups came in 2002 and 2004, with Lufkin walking away with both games. Last season, Lufkin took a 3-0 lead after the end of the first quarter before the Lobos exploded in the second for a school record 35 points to take a 35-10 halftime lead. Battling back and forth in the second half, the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 55-30. John King returns for his 11th season as Longview head coach, lacking just 10 victories to become the winningest coach in school history behind Doug Cox. The Lobos are 5-5 under John King in opening week play, having lost their previous two to Coppell. However, historically, Longview is quite impressive in opening week play. The Lobos have managed a 66-31-7 all-time record in those games, with the longest streak of consecutive wins ending in 1983 after 19 straight wins. The Panthers come into the 2014 season looking to rebound from their most disappointing season in quite some time. Todd Quick returns for his 3rd season as Pack head coach, looking to rebound from Lufkin's first losing season since finishing 4-6-1 in 1995. Lufkin saw their opening week unbeaten streak end in 2012 at 19 straight games when John Tyler knocked off the Panthers, 35-21. Lufkin returned to their winning ways in opening week games last season though, as the Panthers put on a show rebounding from an early deficit and finishing off with a 52-28 victory over the Lions. Despite the recent success for Longview against Lufkin, and their last visit to Abe Martin being a victory, Lufkin itself has not been a kind place for the Lobos in the past decade. Longview had one of the more impressive records at Abe Martin Stadium following their 28-17 victory there in 1997, improving their then record at the stadium to 9-4-0. Since then, a train wreck. The first five games of their eight game losing streak in Lufkin, the Lobos saw the Panthers completely dominate the first half of play only to have to claw their way back into it to make the game look more respectable than it probably should've been, with all five of the games being won by at least two scores. The closest Longview came to winning during the losing streak came in 2007, with Lufkin rallying from down 13 to score with 1:09 remaining in the game to win 16-13. In 2010, the Lobos again had a 13-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, only to have Lufkin hold the Lobos on fourth down at the Panther four as time ran out to secure the Pack 28-21 win. Longview will be rolling into Lufkin to start the 2014 looking for their first four game winning streak over the Panthers since a five game winning streak that stretched from 1989 to 1993. In 2008, Longview opened the season at the eventual state champion Allen Eagles and battled to a 7-7 half-time scoreline. However, five fumbles (one lost) did Longview in during the second half as two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter were all the Eagles needed to knock off the Lobos 21-7. Longview out gained the Eagles 343 to 260 but it wasn't enough. The loss was the third straight season opening game loss for the Lobos, the longest stretch of opening season game losses since the early 1950s.
