LAST FIVE GAMES IN SERIES 12.26.2020 - Denton Ryan 27, Longview 9 - Mesquite Memorial Stadium FULL GAME LOG GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW: The hot, summer months have turned again towards the sights of football season for the 113 year in Longview, Texas. Fresh off a season unlike any other in Lobo football, where most people were just happy to have been able to finish the season period, the Lobos head into the 2021 season with their biggest test to start a season since facing the 2008 Class 5A Division I State Champion Allen Eagles in 2009. Much like those Eagles, the Denton Ryan Raiders steamrolled through their regular season en route to their third state championship in program history. The meeting between Longview and Denton Ryan will be the first time in program history for the Lobos to open a season facing a team that had previously knocked them out of the post season. Last season, Denton Ryan and Longview battled to a 13-6 Ryan halftime lead. The Raiders dominated the second half though, rolling to a 27-9 victory at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium. The 18 point loss was the largest playoff loss for the Lobos since a 38-10 loss to Austin Westlake in the 2012 playoffs. With the new season, Longview sees the departure of their all-time total and rushing touchdown leader in Kaden Meredith, who finished his Lobo football career with 60 total touchdowns and 57 rushing touchdowns. Stepping into that starting rushing spot, is expected to be sophomore sensation, Taylor Tatum, who already holds an offer from the University of Washington. Joining him on the field, is all-time offer holder at Longview High School in Jalen Hale, who as of this preview, holds 32 offers heading into his junior season. Jalen Hale’s 14 touchdowns in his first two season as a Lobo, already sits 5th all-time in receiving touchdown in Longview history, 9 behind record holder Kamden Perry. The big question for Longview this season, though, is who will be the starting quarterback. Junior to be Jordan Allen returns, but Josh Thomas, a transfer in from Jefferson, has thrown a wrench into the starting spot. Thomas, a senior, holds two offers heading into his first and final campaign as a Lobo. As for the Raiders, departure of senior Bear Alexander to Fort Worth Brewer as highlighted their off season in 2021. Still, the Raiders bring back heavy numbers on a defense that was beyond impressive throughout the 2020 state championship campaign. The Raiders will be breaking in a new quarterback themselves, as Seth Henigan departs for Memphis following his undefeated senior year. Khalon Davis takes over the reigns as the Raiders look to continue their winning ways in 2021. The Raiders head into the 2021 season having won 59 consecutive regular season games, 21 non-district games and 15-overall. Ryan’s last non-district loss came back 2014, a 20-13 home loss to the Rockwall Yellowjackets. The test in December for Longview was a monumental test. The test for the Lobos in August, will be no different. The site is set as Longview and Denton Ryan kickoff their 2021 seasons from Frisco’s Ford Center at the Star. But a 23 yard touchdown run by Carey Fortson sparked Longview in the third quarter to 28 points and a 28-17 lead midway through the 4th quarter. A Da’Cedric Hunt rush, an unbelievable run by Tyler McCray and an Aaron Johnson run were the scores for the Lobos. Allen pulled to within three points late in the 4th but Longview held on for a thrilling 28-25 victory of open the year. In 2015, Longview and Lufkin met a year after Longview overcame a 28-point deficit to knock the Panthers out by 1-point…and this rivalry game was no different. Malik Jackson got the scoring going for the Pack before Longview’s Michael Ross tallied. Tylan Miller gave the Lobos the lead in the 2nd quarter before a 92-yard punt return from Savon Fields had the game tied at 14 at halftime. Tylan Miller gave the Lobos the lead in the 4th quarter, before Jadrien Bennett pulled in the touchdown to pull Lufkin within 1-point again in the last minute of the game. Deciding to kick the extra point, Longview’s Ameron Dean blocked the extra point attempt to give the Lobos a 21-20 victory.

Longview returns to the national landscape for the second consecutive year, and for the sixth time overall. But for the first time, the cameras of ESPN will be amongst the crowd. Longview comes into Rose Stadium fresh off a 53-0 beat down of the Marshall Mavericks. The Lobos, winners of a school record 18-consecutive games, saw the Mavs control the tempo in the first quarter to the tune of a 0-0 contest with Marshall running the 40-second clock down to 1 second every single play. Longview’s one possession in the first quarter ended in a punt. Following the first quarter, the Lobos..and more so Kaden Meredith…took over. Longview ended the half up 17-0. A quick score to start the second half deflated any chance the Mavericks had. A safety following the kickoff, then a kickoff return of the kick pushed the game out of distance and the route was on. Longview rolled to the tune of 53-0 over the Mavericks, the largest such margin of victory in the series’ history. The win marked the fifth time the Lobos have scored at least 50 points on the Mavericks in the last 11 seasons. Previous to 2008, Longview had never scored 50 or more points on a Marshall football team. The shutout was also Longview’s 19th overall against the Mavericks, and third since 2011. Overall, it was Longview’s 18th victory in the last 19 meetings over the Mavericks. Since Longview’s first 19-game winning streak started over the Mavs in 1969, 50 years ago this season, Longview is 42-9 against their long time rivals from the east. The Lobos now switch focus to their rivals from the west, the John Tyler Lions. Fresh off a rebounding season in 2018, that saw Cujo nearly upset the defending state champions, the Lions opened their 2019 campaign with a loss to the Mesquite Horn Jaguars. Then followed things up with a 34-7 loss to their cross town rival, Tyler Lee, 34-7. The Lions, after missing the post season two years ago, bounced back last season after the drop to 5A Division I. But the Lions still suffered big time early on in the season, with big losses to Cedar Hill & Longview to start the season. JT had a scheduled meeting with Euless Trinity, but it was cancelled. Last season’s victory for Longview marked their 50th overall against the Lions, the second most over a single program in school history. Since defeating the Lions in 2001, which sent the Lobos to the post season and the Lions home for the year, Longview is 13-3 against John Tyler, having won the last two meetings. Longview rolls into Rose Stadium on a high note, having not lost to John Tyler at their home away from home since the 2000 season. The Lobos have won the last seven meetings against John Tyler at Rose Stadium, and have won the last 14 overall against TISD dating back to 2002. Overall, the Lobos have won 20 of their last 21 visits to the Rose City, with the only loss coming to Mansfield Lake Ridge in 2015 by two points. Since ending their 20-year playoff streak back in 1967, the Lobos have pounded their way to a 34-15-1 record over John Tyler. The Lobos will be rolling in, looking to win their 19th game in a row overall and their 12th non-district contest in a row. Longview held the Wildcats to 31 overall yards on the night. In 1969, Longview knocked off Dallas Sunset, 27-7, at Lobo Stadium. In 1975, Thomas Cook rushed for two scores, while Leo McCoy, Johnny Fuller and Sherman Johnson would each tally one each in a 34-0 Longview victory over Waco Richfield in Paul Tyson Stadium. The Lobos held the Rams to just 40 total yards on the night, including -4 rushing. In 1980, Zane Butter started the scoring before Nathan Harris tallied two of his own in a 35-19 Longview victory over Fort Worth Paschal at Lobo Stadium. Terry Morrow and Ronnie Hunter each scored on the night. In 1986, Thomas Snoddy rushed for two touchdowns while Joe Brooks returned an interception for a score from 70 yards out. Rolanda Reese finished the scoring with a 40 yard pass reception in a 28-2 Longview victory over Fort Worth Trimble Tech in Lobo Stadium. In 1997, David Monsivais kicked a 35 yard field goal but the Lobos saw a 7-3 lead for the Killeen Kangaroos on the scoreboard as the half ended. Shawn Byrdsong would change that in the third with a 7 yard passing touchdown before the Lobo defense came up with a safety in the fourth as Longview knocked off Killeen at Leo Buckley Stadium, 12-7. In 2003, Rogers Taylor hauled in a 41 yard passing touchdown and Quincy Grant rushed in from one yard out as Longview took out the Wildcats of Lake Highlands at Wildcat-Ram Stadium, 24-14. Chris Jones and Ryan Howard tallied for the Lobos in a game that saw Steven Coleman of Lake Highlands return a 90-yard interception for a score. In 2008, Longview rushed all over the Evangel Eagles in a 52-22 beat down at Lobo Stadium in a game that was scheduled due to Hurricane Ike. However, the Lobos would later have to forfeit the game due to a player playing one play in the fourth quarter that was ineligible. The game is best known for Evangel finishing with -21 rushing yards thanks to 11 Lobo sacks. In 2015, Longview grabbed the lead in the 4th quarter thanks to a Jacorian Jones 11 yard passing touchdown followed by a two point conversion. But it wasn’t to be as Shreveport Byrd came right back and punched one in from Deuce Caston in a 22-15 Yellowjacket victory over Longview at Shreveport’s Independence Stadium. Longview finished with just 85 rushing yards on the night.

It has been 12 long years since Longview walked out of Lobo Stadium with a victory against John Tyler, but the Lobos on Friday night cruised to a 41-13 victory to end John Tyler’s 3-game winning streak over the Lobos at their home stadium, and end John Tyler’s 5-game overall winning streak inside Lobo Stadium. With the win, Longview improved 3-0 on the season. That marks the first time since 2004/2005 that Longview has had back to back 3-0 starts to a season, following Longview’s 3-0 start to the 2017 season. It’s just the fifth time in 15 seasons under head coach John King that Longview has started 3-0. The other time being in 2009. The win also marked Longview’s 50th overall win against John Tyler. It’s the 2nd program that Longview has at least 50 victories against, the other being Marshall with 61 victories now. Now the Lobos turn their attention to a state that after constantly filled Longview’s non-district schedule for the better part of a decade and a half, has only been on Longview’s schedule once this decade. Longview heads to Louisiana for the first time since 2015, and travels to Ruston for the first time in 16 seasons. The Lobos and Bearcats haven’t met in 16 seasons, but they’re definitely no strangers to each other. Longview’s old offensive coordinator from the beginning of John King’s era calls on the Lobos this week as second year head coach, Jerrod Baugh, takes helm against his former head coach. It’ll be the first time for John King to face a former assistant coach as a head coach. Longview and Ruston have met 10 times previously, with the Lobos winning the last two in 2001 and 2002. The Lobos opened the series in 1992, with a 23-12 victory at Ruston. Ruston then won the next two meetings, in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, the #10 Bearcats were able to make a goal line stand against Longview to win 14-9. In 1994, the #1 ranked Bearcats took advantage of a missed extra point to win 14-13. The Lobos then won the next three. Ruston’s only win by more than a touchdown came in 1999 when they hung 51 points on the helpless Lobos. It was the first time in 47 years that Longview had given up 50 points or more. Excluding that 51-18 victory, the other three Ruston victories have come by a total of 12 points. The visit to Ruston will mark just the 2nd time since 2010 that Longview ventures to Louisiana for a non-district game, and 3rd time overall since 2010 (playoff game in Shreveport in 2010). The Lobos are looking to improve to 4-0 for the first time since finishing 10-0 in 2005. WEEK FOUR 11-6A SCHEDULE: Longview at Ruston (James Field) Mesquite vs Hurst L.D. Bell (E.H. In 1945, Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson handed Longview a 19-13 loss at Lobo Stadium. In 1951, Lufkin’s RV Holleman run in from 6 yards out to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead. But a missed extra point would cost Lufkin after Claude Pliler would haul in a 10 yard pass reception to tie the game. The following PAT was good and Longview upset Lufkin, 7-6, Lufkin. In 1956, Longview and Denison battled back and forth all night in a game that saw 12 touchdowns between the two teams. Pete Burks tallied 4 for the Lobos, and behind 30 first downs and 477 rushing yards, the Lobos knocked off the Yellowjackets, 47-33 at Lobo Stadium. In 1984, Clifford Powell, Leon Hendrix and Joe Johnson would all register scores for the Lobos as Longview would dominated the Eagles in Abilene, 21-0. In 1990, Bobby Taylor’s 75 yard pass reception in the first quarter was just the beginning for the Lobos as Longview would go on to route Carrollton Newman Smith, 49-12. The Lobos would hold the Trojans to just 135 yards on the night while tallying for 399 for themselves. In 2001, Tate Casey would pass in a 23 yard pass reception in the first quarter and Willie Andrews would rush in for two touchdowns as Longview rolled over Ruston, 35-7, at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos, fresh off a 35-28 national televised win over long time rival Lufkin, headed into Marshall's Maverick Stadium and handed the Mavericks one of their worst losses ever in their home stadium with a 60-14 Lobo win. Longview tallied three times in the first quarter and never looked back, strolling to a point total that Longview had never reached against the Mavericks before. The 60-14 win increased Longview's lead in the series to 19 games and gave the Lobos a three game winning streak over the Mavs. Since their 2015 upset victory, Marshall has not been able to get a single thing going in the three games against the Lobos, struggling to a 157-28 scoreline in favor of Longview. The Lobos now turn their attention to another long time rival, their third in three weeks, in the John Tyler Lions. The Lobos and Lions will meet for the 95th time on Friday night as the two storied programs are two of East Texas's most traditional powers. The Lions got a little revenge on their cross town rivals last Saturday night, handing the Tyler Lee Red Raiders an ugly 65-21 loss, following an upset Red Raider victory last season that saw the Lions miss the post season for the first time since 2007. The win for Cujo seemingly rectified the Lions' opening season, 57-7, loss at the hands of DFW powerhouse Cedar Hill, where the Lions could not get a single thing going their way. The Lions come into the rivalry game having won their past five games in Lobo Stadium, three of which have come against the Lobos. Longview's last victory over the Lions at their home stadium came in 2006, when the Lobos had to come from behind to win 28-21. Since that win, the Lions have had three straight blow out victories, with all three match ups being multiple score games at halftime in favor of the Lions. Overall, the Lobos and Lions have traded victories back and forth in the last six meetings, with neither team being able to regain control of the series, following Longview's 9-game winning streak over the Lions. The two schools will meet for the 95th time, after three previously unfound games were discovered from 1917 and 1920. The series dates back to 1912, when Longview registered a 13-7 victory in Longview. The two schools will meet for the 46th time overall in Longview this coming Friday, where Longview plans to celebrate Green Out and Homecoming. The Lobos are 14-2 all-time in their Green Out contests, dating back to 2002, with the only losses coming to Allen in 2011 and John Tyler in 2014. The Lions are 1-3 in Green Out contests. Under John King, the Lobos are 14-0 in Homecoming contests with Longview's last loss coming in 2013 to Tyler Lee (18-14). This will be the first time since 1992 that John Tyler will be the Homecoming opponent for the Lobos, when Longview pulled out a 17-16 victory. Overall, the Lobos are 38-13-4 in Homecoming games. The Lobos are looking to improve to 3-0 on the season for just the fifth time in 15 seasons under John King, and for the first time in back to back seasons since King's first two seasons in 2004 and 2005. The Longview Lobos opened the 2018 football season with a national televised audience watching on, in the 82nd edition of their long standing rivalry with the Lufkin Panthers. Back and forth the two rivals went until the final three minutes when a loose fumble right at the 50 gave the Lobos a chance to bring home the win. And that’s exactly what junior quarterback Haynes King did. Throwing the ball up for grabs, Lobo receiver Kaden Kearbey came down with the game winning touchdown. Following an interception just two plays from scrimmage later, the Lobos sealed their win with their third straight win over the Panthers and their 6th in their last 7 meetings. Next up for the Lobos is another long standing rivalry with the rivals from the East, in the Marshall Mavericks. The 108th edition comes to Marshall’s Maverick Stadium after a solid win for the Mavericks in the 2nd year of the Claude Mathis era for the Mavericks. The Mavs traveled to Tyler to take on Tyler Lee and walked away with a comfortable 42-29 victory. The win in the opening game was Marshall’s first since 2015, and just their third opening game victory in the last decade. The two rivals will meet for the 108th time, and for the 86th consecutive season. A series dating back to 1909, the two schools have met every year since apart from 1913, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925 and 1932. The Lobos come into the game having won two in a row against the Mavs, and 16 of the previous 17 contests. Since the start of their 19-game winning streak over Marshall back in 1969, Longview has registered a 40-9 against the Mavericks. Inside Marshall’s Maverick Stadium has been just as impressive for the Lobos winning 7 of the last 8 games there, with the lone loss coming in 2015 with a 28-25 loss. Bobby Taylor’s 96 yard kickoff return was Longview’s only tally in the first half. In 2001, trailing the three-time defending 5A State Champions and #2 ranked Midland Lee, 17-13, heading into the 4th quarter, Lobo mania returned with a big celebration. The Lobos had not made the post season in four years and used that aggression to make their returning statement with a 20-point 4th quarter to knock off the Rebels in Lobo Stadium, 33-17. Fred Hawkins tallied all three touchdowns to seal Longview’s biggest victory in years. In 2007, Mark Johnson tallied twice and Johnny Garrett added three more insurance as the Longview Lobos dominated the Mavericks of Marshall from the get go in a 41-7 victory at Maverick Stadium. It’s a feat they’ll be looking to match this Friday night as they welcome the South Oak Cliff Golden Bears for Homecoming 2017. The Lobos, 2-0 on the young season, are fresh off a 41-7 win over the Marshall Mavericks. The win over the Mavs was their 16th win in the last 17 against Marshall, and was their 60th overall in the long standing rivalry. After hosting the 107th battle between the Lobos and Mavericks, Longview now turns to hosting Dallas ISD’s South Oak Cliff in the 7th contest between the two schools. The Lobos have never lost against the Golden Bears, with only a 1962 tie blemishing an otherwise perfect record over SOC. Last season, the Lobos 7-0 early to the Golden Bears after a long drive of 17 plays to open the game. From there on, Longview rolled to a 62-14 win. For the second straight year, the Golden Bears will be the opponent for Homecoming 2017. The Lobos improved to a perfect 13-0 last season under John King in Homecoming games, and will be looking to continue that trend against their final non-district opponent on Friday. Longview has scored at least 50 points in their previous 5 Homecoming games (52, 55, 56, 61, 62). South Oak Cliff is the 17th DISD school the Lobos have faced. Longview is 47-8-2 in the previous 57 games against Dallas ISD schools. Longview’s last loss in Longview to a DISD school came in 1966 when Dallas Woodrow Wilson escaped Longview with a 19-14 win. The last overall loss to a DISD school came against Dallas Carter in 1991, 26-0, in the Area Round of the playoffs.
