The motto to the rest of the regular season will sing true, as the Lobos inch ever so closer to a district championship, a first since 2019's 11-6A district title. Last week, the Lobos returned to the gridiron from the bye week to blast 5A Division One new comer Forney, 46-7, in the first meeting between the two squads. The Lobos controlled the very get go, racing out to a 22-0 lead before Forney had a chance to know what hit them. The win improved Longview to 6-0 on the season, but most importantly 3-0 in district. With that, the Lobos see four teams remaining in front of them in their quest to return to the mark of district champions. This week, the North Mesquite Stallions are back on the schedule after a two year hiatus. The Stallions dropped down from Class 6A in last February's realignment. However, the Stallions have found just as little success in 5A D1 as they did in Class 6A. North Mesquite comes in off a 28-14 loss down at Lufkin, dropping to 1-2 in district play. North Mesquite's lone win in district play was over crosstown rival West Mesquite, who currently sits at 0-3 in district play. The two teams last met in 2019, when the Lobos won their 24th consecutive game in knocking off the Stallions 55-0. The win also marked Longview's 7th in a row over North Mesquite, dating back to 2010. Since the Lobos lost to North Mesquite back in 2010, Longview has outscored the Stallions 346-83 in those seven meetings. The last two meetings have been the largest margins of victory for Longview in the series, outscoring the Stallions 118-3 in those two meetings alone. Overall, Longview has 12 wins over the Stallions to just three losses. The two teams first met back in 1971, when the Stallions visited Longview and walked away with a 36-23 victory thanks to a 17-point outburst in the fourth quarter. In the next meeting, delayed until 1988, the Stallions knocked off the Lobos at Lobo Stadium again in a 28-14 victory. Those two wins are the only time a Mesquite ISD squad has ever had a series lead over the Lobos. Since then, the Lobos have rolled over the Stallions, all in district play, by a 12-1 series margin. North Mesquite's lone district win over the Lobos was definitely a big win, back in 2010. Longview took a 14-3 lead into the 4th quarter at Mesquite Memorial Stadium only for Joe Bergeron and the Stallions to overcome Longview and defeat the Lobos 24-14. The win snapped a 36-game district winning streak for the Lobos. The loss also remains the only loss since John King over that saw the Lobos give up a multiple score lead in the fourth quarter. The Stallions almost did the same four years prior in 2006, when Longview took a 27-14 lead into the fourth quarter at Mesquite Memorial only for North Mesquite to storm back and take a 28-27 lead on the Lobos late. Longview's D'Marcus Miles denied that comeback, however, as the Lobos escaped with a 35-28 win. The two teams are meeting at Mesquite Memorial Stadium for the 7th time, with Longview holding a 5-1 record against the Stallions at their home venue. Overall, this will be Longview's 17th trip to Mesquite Memorial Stadium, holding an 11-5 advantage in the previous 16 games. Of course, Longview fans know Mesquite Memorial quite well after recent years in seeing their season end at the hands of Denton Ryan in both 2020 and 2021 at Memorial. That said, outside of opponent not ranked No. 1 in the state and not named Denton Ryan, Longview has won their last 5 contests there. As Longview enters tonight's contest, they can not clinch a playoff berth this week though tiebreakers would be the only way to eliminate the Lobos in that case. Longvew can however, clinch a playoff berth and a top two seed with a win this week and next week. Hardy Miller hauled in an 11-yard scoring reception as well. In 1949, Henderson’s O’Neal Brightwell rushed from 31-yards out to tally the only score of the game in a 7-0 Lion win over Longview at Lobo Stadium. In 1977, Sam Lanier, Kenny Jackson, Bobby Portley, Reno Hutchins and Melvin Lewis each scored a touchdown as Longview rolled over John Tyler, 35-0, at Lobo Stadium. The Lobos tallied 27 first downs and managed 461 total yards while holding the Lions to 168 yards on the night in the win. In 1983, Joe Johnson rushed for three Lobo touchdowns, including a 67-yarder in the 4th quarter, as Longview knocked off Lufkin, 36-13, at Abe Martin Stadium. That's the mantra the Longview Lobos rang out following their 49-13 beat down of the Rockwall Heath Hawks. The Lobos, with the win, moved to within a win of clinching the program's 19 playoff consecutive playoff appearance. Already a school record at 18 years in a row in the post season, the Lobos have never gone to the post season for an entire decade (Lobos missed the post season in 2000 prevent the 2000s from completing an entire decade in the post season). Longview rolled to within one game of clinching that post season berth, by eliminating the Heath Hawks, the first team to be mathematically eliminated. The Lobos saw quarterback Haynes King return to this 2018 form, by throwing four touchdown passes on the night in a 10 for 14 night for the senior. King now holds 5 of the 15 four or more passing touchdown nights in Longview school history. The win for the Lobos was their 6th in a row over the Heath Hawks, the sixth time in school history the Lobos have opened a series with 6 or more victories in a row. Longview now turns their attention towards eliminating another team from playoff contention, in the North Mesquite Stallions. Second year head coach Tim Seder has not been able to bring North back to its glory days in his first couple years as head coach, with the Stallions staring a fourth consecutive season without a post season berth in the face. The Stallions have opened 11-6A play with three consecutive losses, getting outscored 156-34 in those three losses. The Lobos return to Hanby Stadium just two weeks apart from having knocked off North's rival in Mesquite Horn. The Lobos and Stallions will meet at Hanby for the first time in the series' history. This will be the seventh time for the Lobos to take on North in Mesquite, with all six previous games being at Mesquite Memorial where the Lobos hold a 5-1 record against the Stallions. In what will be the 15th game of the series, the Stallions actually hold the most wins over Longview by any Mesquite ISD squad at three. North's last victory came in 2010, when Joe Bergeron and the Stallions went wild on a Lobo squad in the fourth quarter, as they erased a 14-3 Lobo lead and defeated Longview 24-14. Since that loss, six games ago, the Lobos have outscored North 291 to 83. The Stallions previous two wins came in 1971 and 1988, both non-district meetings. Longview rolls into Hanby holding a 23-game winning streak, the state's longest. The Lobos also are holding a 23-game regular season winning streak, the second longest in school history, and a 15-game district winning streak, the fourth longest in school history. I should be a big night from the Lobo offense as the Lobos and Stallions meet at Hanby for the first time. WEEK EIGHT 11-6A SCHEDULE: North Mesquite vs Longview (E.H. The stretch run to the 2017 playoffs finally gets back underway this week after the entire district enjoyed a week off from action. It was a much needed week off for the Lobos of Longview after suffering numerous injuries through the first 6 weeks of the season (and even stretching into two days and the scrimmage week). But before they took the week off, Longview enjoyed a much needed and extremely important victory over the Rockwall Yellowjackets, 31-21. The Lobos lead throughout the game, grabbing a 24-7 lead late into the 3rd quarter before the Jackets crawled back into the game in the 4th. A second interception by Jalen Carr ended any doubt who would win the game. Carr ended the night with three picks overall. The win for Longview improved the Lobos to 5-1 on the season with four big games remaining in North Mesquite, John Tyler, Rockwall Heath and Mesquite. The win marked Longview’s 7th consecutive victory over the Yellowjackets, and improved the Lobos to 4-0 all-time at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium. Longview now turns it’s focus to North Mesquite, who is coming off a 7-point loss to Rockwall Heath and sits at 1-2 in district overall. The Lobos and Stallions meet for the 13th time, 10th in district play as the Lobos look to win their 5th in a row over the North Mesquite. Since falling to the Stallions in 2010, Longview has rolled up four convincing victories over North with the Lobo offense scoring at least 37 in all four of them. Longview is looking to win their 10th game against a single opponent for the 15th time in school history. The Stallions no doubt will be looking to turn the curse of Lobo Stadium as they look for their first win in Longview since 1988. North Mesquite’s been somewhat of a shock in district 11-6A so far this season. No doubt, most expected them to completely struggle and finish at the bottom of the standings. At one point, the Stallions sat at 3-1 on the season before a blow out loss to John Tyler and a single score loss to Heath brought them back to .500 overall. The John Tyler loss, 44-7, was really the only game they haven’t been in this year. While not expected to make the post season, the Stallions definitely will have their chance to get in as they still have Longview, Mesquite Horn and Rockwall left on their schedule. They probably would have to win at least two of those games to make it in. The Lobos will be looking to continue to improve, as they have following their big loss to Mesquite Horn. Since handing the reigns over to sophomore Haynes King, the Lobos are 2-0 overall with the offense averaging 42.5 points a game. For momentum, the playoff race and the district championship race, this week is a big one between Longview and North Mesquite. In 1967, Joe Miller caught a touchdown pass sandwiched between two Rodney Hill rushing touchdowns as the Lobos knocked off Lee, 21-0 in Tyler. In 1972, Calvin Portley’s first quarter touchdown was all Longview would need in the end as the Lobos knocked off Palestine 28-0 at Luckett-Kolstad Field in Palestine. In 1989, after a scoreline first half, the Lobos came alive at Abe Martin Stadium as the Lobos behind Kevin Madden,Dean Malone and Kim Wallace’s scores shutout the Pack, 17-0. In 1995, Isiah Stoker tallied three times as the Lobos rushed for 334 yards total on the night in a 29-6 win over Nacogodches. After a bye week for all of 11-6A, the Lobos and Stallions meet for the first time since 2013 at the same place they met just three years ago…Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium. The Lobos (5-1) come in as the lone undefeated squad remaining in the district while North Mesquite’s (3-3) big upset of Rockwall Heath pulled them back into the four-way tie for 2nd place in the district at 2-1. A big reason for the Stallions victory was the return of starting quarterback, Ja’Quez Gooch, who was previously injured against Arlington Bowie a little over a month ago. Longview comes into their 7th game of the season off the heels of a big 36-29 win over Rockwall. The Lobo defense need two big defensive stands in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. The win marked Longview’s 36th consecutive victory at Lobo Stadium in district games and improved the Lobos to 69-4 all-time under John King in district games. One of those four losses came at the hands of North Mesquite, back in 2010 at Mesquite Memorial Stadium thanks to a guy named Joe Bergeron. That night, despite holding a 14-3 lead head into the 4th quarter, saw the Stallions rip apart the Lobo defense in the final frame in route to 21 unanswered points. Since that loss, the Lobos have outscored the Stallions by a combined 138-38 in the three games. The two schools meet for the 12th time on Friday night, in a series that dates back to 1971 in a season that saw just second year program North Mesquite pull off the victory 36-23 at Lobo Stadium. The two schools wouldn’t meet again until 1988 in a non-district series that saw the Lobos and Stallions split games. North Mesquite pulled off the dominating win in 1988, 28-14, at Lobo Stadium. Longview, however, came back in 1989 and rallied from a 12-0 deficit entering the fourth quarter to take home the win 15-12 at Mesquite Memorial. The two schools would have to wait until the UIL realignment of 2004 to meet again, where Longview has won the 7 of the 8 district contests between the two teams since. The Lobos will be looking to pull off their fourth straight win over the Stallions and move to 4-0 in district play as Longview continues to fight for their 12th district championship in 13 years. In 1983, Joe Johnson scored three consecutive touchdowns with an added safety as the Lobos dominated Lufkin at Abe Martin Stadium, 36-13. Longview racked up 325 yards rushing on the night. In 1988, Michael Carroll’s two touchdown 3rd quarter marked Lufkin’s 24-6 victory over Longview. 6 fumbles on the night doomed the Lobos at Lobo Stadium, with Shawn Lawson’s touchdown being the only marker for the hosts. In 1994, Chris Butcher tailed two touchdowns of 50+ yards each in a 33-15 victory over Nacogdoches at Dragon Stadium. In 2005, Zach Decker’s 23 yard field goal in the final seconds of the game was enough to send undefeated Longview to a 37-35 victory over Rockwall. Andy Tanner for Rockwall tallied three touchdowns on the night as Longview held off a huge rally by the Yellowjackets that saw them take the lead late in the 4th. In 2011, Longview saw a back and forth match up with Mesquite Horn come down to the final quarter as Longview held on for a win over the Jaguars, 38-30. The win was Longview’s 7th consecutive over the Jags in a game that saw Longview finish with more passing yards than rushing on the night.
