  1. Two teams that have played in fits and starts all season... with Tenaha clinching district last week, Maud and Overton are fighting for who plays who in the postseason. 3-0 Tenaha 2-1 Overton 2-2 Timpson 1-2 Maud 0-3 Mount E. 0-4 Fruitvale Hmm, do three teams go into the postseason, or four? Because at 1-2, Maud is on the outside looking in. If they win, that's a three-way tie for second but I'm not sure how the tire-breaker would work. That would mean they beat Overton, who beat Timpson, who beat Maud, who beat Overton, who beat Timpson, who beat Maud, who beat... With a win, Overton would finish second in 11-2A and likely face Evadale in bi-district. Man, I'm not sure what'd be a neutral site for that game... Lufkin? Maud had a pretty hot start, so I don't know what happened against Timpson, but I reckon we'll have to score more than 9 points to beat them. Plus, I don't think this one's gonna come down to a last-second field goal. If Overton leads late, they'll run out the clock. If Maud leads late, they'll probably try to run it up for the sake of playoff calculations (I know I would). The Cards are usually tough at home (3-0 this season), so the Mustangs are gonna have to grab some momentum early to offset the homefield advantage. Can they do it? We'll see...
  2. Who wins the district and what order will the playoff teams be seeded? Maud Cardinals Mt Enterprise Wildcats Overton Mustangs Tenaha Tigers Timpson Bears
  3. Overton vs. Normangee Wildcat Stadium, Whitehouse 7 p.m., Friday, November 14 The Mustangs are riding high after surviving their nailbiting 30-28 win over Maud, while the Panthers hope to get back on track after a shellacking by Iola. Both are programs in the midst of rebuilding. Overton is a very young team, with sophomores and freshmen that start on both sides of the ball. The Panthers have more senior starters than the Mustangs have seniors, but Overton's youngsters are actually more experienced in the post-season than Normangee's, as this is the school's third-straight playoff appearance. I don't know much about our friends from down south, but I'm certain they're not willing to settle for "one and done." Looking at their schedule, they've won and lost some close games, so I suspect they've got what it takes to play four quarters. Having taken on some tough squads in Mart and Iola, they won't be intimidated by the young Mustang upstarts. Overton is showing steady improvement since a disappointing loss to Timpson with a hard-fought loss to speedy Tenaha, a surprising rout of Mount Enterprise, then last night's gutsy performance against a determined Cardinal squad. There's a lot of excitement and confidence bubbling up, and the team seems to be showing a consistency that has eluded them for most of the season. Normangee will win if... they can make big plays on offense. Overton has a plodding, time-consuming offense. If the Panthers can force a shootout, they'll keep the Mustangs off-balance. On defense Normangee has to load the box to slow down Overton's three-headed rushing attack. Overton will win if... they don't get in 3rd and Long too often, and hold on to the dang ball. Mustang junior halfback Julian Herndon (6-2, 210lbs) can run the ball 30-40 times easy, but speedy junior Kam Hawkins and explosive sophomore Tanner Lee can break the big play. If Overton's running game gets rolling, the Panther D is gonna have a long night. Defensively the Mustangs don't have to pitch a shutout, just prevent the big play. I predict the Mustangs will control the clock on offense, bend but not break on defense. The game will be close throughout, with Overton pulling away late. The Mustangs win the battle of the kelly green teams, advancing to the next round: 33-20.
  4. Maud at Overton 7:30 p.m. Friday Coach Roy Stadium Two teams with a lot in common, and some pretty competitive matchups in recent years. They've played for playoff position and district titles, so having something on the line is nothing new. This year it's the third and final playoff spot. The winner has a shot at the postseason. The loser starts shooting hoops. A lot in common between these two teams, including their results against common opponents. This one's too close to call. I vacillate between homer and poormouther on this'n, but, really, I think it depends on which team plays consistently for four quarters. Yeah yeah, it sounds like something John Madden might say, but it's legit. Both teams have squandered leads and given up games they should've won. The winner is gonna have to play a complete game. With fingers crossed, I think Overton takes this one—scoring late and holding on for a hard-fought win by a narrow margin.
  5. All Saints at Overton, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Coach Chester Roy Stadium All Saints is coming off a solid win over Timpson, while Overton tries to get back on top of the horse after a shellacking in Ore City. Who's got the edge, by how much? Who wins this one, why?
  6. Overton at Ore City, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Rebels Stadium Overton's coming off a 3-7 one-and-done trip to the postseason, while Ore City looks to rebuild after an 0-10 campaign a year ago. Who's got the edge, by how much? Who wins this one, why?
  7. Overton at Big Sandy, 6 p.m. Friday at Wildcat Stadium So yeah, once again, it's just a scrimmage — but it sure beats playing with yourself. Uh, I mean, it sure beats playing against yourself. Please don't ban me. But anyway... What are some things you're hoping to see out of your kids? Overton showed some backfield depth, but struggled to pass the ball. Defensively there was poor tackling and blown assignments. Was this just early-season jitters or a sign of things to come? Big Sandy remains a mystery as well. They've got some young talent on the roster but are struggling to assert themselves. Both teams have good coaching staffs, and they've got their programs going in the right direction. It'll be interesting to see which team has made more progress during the preseason. Thoughts?
  8. Overton at Grapeland, 9 a.m. Saturday at Sandies Stadium Yeah yeah, I get it, it's just a scrimmage — no one's trying to "win" or anything. But what are some things you're hoping to see out of your kids? Grapeland and Overton are both two young teams trying to turn their programs around. I don't know where the Sandies are in this process, but the Mustangs have a lot of young, raw talent. While there's only three or four seniors, there's a bunch of sophomores who started last year — and some gifted freshmen coming up. Barton & Co. believe in starting the best 11 guys on a side, so seniority doesn't count for squat if you don't put out. I've seen and heard good things coming outta practice thus far, Saturday is a chance to see how much progress has been made... or if we need to go back to the drawing board. Thoughts?
  9. So here it is: Fruitvale Maud Mount Enterprise Overton Tenaha Timpson I know almost nothing about Fruitvale, except that they're a former six-man school. Timpson and Maud are pretty tough year-in and year-out, Overton and Mount Enterprise should enjoy a rather spirited Rusk County rivalry (it's been too long since these neighbors have played). Tenaha is the obvious favorite in this district, but they shouldn't expect anyone to lay down for them. Thoughts?
  10. I've got us (Overton) in a district looking like this: District ?- 2A Division II Overton (152) Tenaha (142) Timpson (147) Mount E (102) What about y'all? What sort of district do you see your former-1A now-2A school landing in?
  11. Frost vs. Overton Class 1A, Division II Bi-District Playoff 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 in Palestine
  12. Last year Colmesneil struggled through a monsoon in a defensive struggle, with the Mustangs escaping with a 13-2 win. This year the Bulldogs are hosting an Overton squad trying to overcome youthful mistakes and nagging injuries. The Mustangs are on a two-game skid while Colmesneil's riding high at 2-0. How do these two teams match up? Which team has the advantage? Who do you think is gonna come away with the win?
  13. Last year Beckville and Overton battled back and forth in a hard-fought contest, with the Mustangs eeking out a 28-21 win at home. This year the Bearcats are at home and hosting an Overton squad trying to sort out its defensive and special teams woes. Historically the Mustangs dominate this series, though in recent years (since 2000) it's been roughly a 50-50 split. How do these two teams match up? Which team has the advantage? Who do you think is gonna come away with the win?
  14. Last year Class 2A Winona jumped out to a quick lead on Class 1A Overton and then just poured it on, with the game finishing a 52-22 non-district home win for the Wildcats. In this year's season opener, Winona travels to Coach Chester Roy Stadium in Overton, where the Mustangs haven't lost a game since 2011. How do these two teams match up? Which team has the advantage? Who do you think is gonna come away with the win?
  15. Prosser's Prediction for 10-1A D-II, Region III 1.) Maud (8-2, 3-1) 2.) Detroit (6-4, 2-2) 3.) Overton (6-4, 2-2) 4.) Cumby (4-6, 1-3) 5.) Union Hill (0-10, 0-4) 2013 outlook: Maud looks to be the heavyweight in this district. But if Overton can figure out a way to replace 4 starting linemen, their standout QB K.J. Luster and two-way leader Jesse Roach, they will most definitely stake a claim. Detroit returns a bunch of starters, just not their star. They'll remain in the hunt. Cumby has talent but lost their coach. If the right guy comes in, they'll be scrappy. Union Hill continues to twist in the wind. Overton prediction: I'm as hardcore a homer as they come, but Overton's offensive line (or lack thereof) scares me. We've got some tough youngsters coming up, but I just don't know if they can fill the holes left by the graduation of Greg Moore, Clay Martin, and Weston Gillis. If they can, we'll go 8-2 (or maybe even 10-0!), but if they can't toe the line, every game will be a white-knuckle battle. Overton has a lot of young speed and size coming up. If they can put it all together, they'll be a force to be reckoned with. But if they try to coast, they'll need help just to make it to the playoffs.
