  1. Seeing where everyone is headed to catch the best action this week! Where will you be headed???
  2. The whole season is nice, but the playoffs are the best time of the year...I'll be shooting Timpson vs Centerville at the Tomato Bowl in Jacksonville...you can see my pics on my Facebook page.
  3. Here we go. I know I've seen plenty of 1-2 win teams make the playoffs, but don't recall ever seeing a zero win team. Well we have 0-10 Iraan. Any others? I know it's the system, but why not have some integrity, or whatever one wants to call it, and just forfeit the game.
  4. The Alto Yellowjackets (District 10-2A Champions) will take on their former district mate Joaquin Rams (District 11-2A Runner-up) in the area round of the playoffs. The game will be played Friday, November 22nd at 7:30 at Lufkin’s Abe Martin Stadium; Alto is the home team. The winner will advance to Round 3 to play the winner of Big Sandy (10-2A 4th seed) vs. Groveton (12-2A Runner-up). The Jackets lead the series 13-2 with the Rams winning the last two meetings. Who advances? For the second time in three years, the Lobos and Rangers meet at John E. Kincaide Stadium in the Area Round of the playoffs. In that meeting, the Lobos and Rangers combined for 1,238 total yards and 118 points. While Jesuit’s attack was through the air, 433 yards and 51 pass attempts, Longview did their damage on the ground with 462 rushing yards. The Lobos completed 7 passes on just 7 pass attempts and rolled up 75 points on the Jesuit defense on just 36 offensive snaps. The star for Jesuit that day was Parker Towns, but EJ Smith tallied two scores that afternoon, while Longview’s Haynes King returns after throwing three touchdowns and accounting for 234 total yards on the day. The two programs meet for the eight time because of both teams dominating performance in the first round. Longview started their defense of the 6A Division II State Title with a 41-10 beat down of Temple at Lobo Stadium. Longview rolled up 537 yards on the Wildcats, while holding the vaunted Temple offense to just 218 yards on the night. The Wildcats had not had a game all season below 490 yards. Jesuit hosted Lakeview Centennial and rushed for 342 yards on the night, and accounted for 404 total yards, in a 45-14 beat down of the Patriots. The Lobos come into Friday’s contest against Jesuit holding the state’s longest winning streak at 27-game. The Lobos tied John Tyler’s 27-game winning streak, from 1994 to 1995, on Friday night, tying the longest winning streak in 6A/5A East Texas History. The Lobos and Rangers come into Kincaide Stadium, or better known as Lobo West to Longview fans, meeting for the 8th time. The Lobos have dominated the entire series against the Rangers, a series that dates back to 1972. The two programs met four years in a row in non-district action between 1972 and 1975, where the Rangers did not tally a single point. The closest contest was a 1973 Lobo victory at Lobo Stadium, 14-0. The two programs did not meet again until 2004 in the Area round, when the Rangers switched from a TCIL schedule and joined the UIL. The Rangers had lost just one game that season as they walked into Lion Memorial Stadium in Ennis. After a lengthy delay due to rain, the Lobos rushed for 513 yards to introduce Jesuit to the big boys and handed Jesuit a 44-14 beatdown. Jesuit and Longview met again in the Area round in 2012, this time at Wildcat-Ram Stadium in Richardson. While the Rangers were able to be competitive for a half and lead the Lobos 19-14 in the second half, the Lobos dominated the rest of the way and defeated the Rangers, 57-25. Tory White’s 99-yard rush for a score is the best thing Lobo fans remember from that contest. The last meeting came in 2017. Meeting at Kincaide Stadium, Lobo Stadium West has become a huge home for the Lobos under John King through out their playoff runs. Longview has run out an 11-0 record at Kinciade, and a 10-0 playoff record, dating back to 2007. It’ll be a big showdown on Friday night between the Lobos and Rangers. In 1945, Joe Young scored three times, Bobby Dill returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score while the Lobo defense held the Bears to just 116 yards on the day as Longview steamrolled Gladewater, 39-7, at Bear Stadium. In 1951, Dick Nash rushed in from two yards out in the third quarter to tie the game, but Marshall's 46 pass reception by Jimmy Moore in the 4th quarter gave Marshall a 14-7 victory over Longview at Maverick Stadium. In 1963, four different Panthers tallied scores, including a 32-yard reception by Robin Welch and a 55-yard run by David Paulette to give the Panthers a 28-6 victory over Longview at Panther Stadium. Rusty Musser scored Longview’s only tally in the 4th quarter, a 47-yard run. In 1974, Leo McCoy scored twice, and Steve Gaddis added the other Longview tally but it wasn’t enough as Plano’s Tony Wallis scored from 8 yards out with 8 minutes to play in the 4th quarter to lift the Wildcats to a 28-21 victory at Rose Stadium. In 1986, Jimmy Smith rushed in from two yards out, the Lobo defense forced a safety and Alonzo Adams returned an interception for a score in the 3rd quarter to lift Longview to a 14-7 victory over Conroe McCullough at the Astrodome in the Area Round. In 1997, Fred Talley, Shawn Byrdsong and Jay Hurst all tallied for Longview as the Lobos knocked off Plano East, 21-10, at Texas Stadium in the Area Round. The Lobos forced three turnovers on the day to bring home the victory. In 2014, Longview fell behind 16-0 early in the second quarter, came back to take a 21-16 lead late in the same quarter before ultimately falling to the Mansfield Lake Ridge Eagles at Rose Stadium, 37-35. Jett Duffey’s Eagle rung up a program worst for the Lobo defense, 579 yards on the night, but a missed field goal from 49-yards out in the pouring rain as time ran out was the nail in the coffin. In 2013, McKinney Boyd jumped out to a 10-7 halftime lead, but Longview jumped right back with 20 unanswered points in the third quarter as the Lobos knocked off the Broncos, 27-10, at Wildcat-Ram Stadium in Richardson. Travis Howard’s 25-yard fumble return for the score finished the day on a very chilly Saturday afternoon.
  6. Been waiting on the thread and it hasn’t shown so here ya go.. come on SH welcome to the playoffs ... you guys need to get more excited about being here than this. 8. The West Rusk Raiders slipped by the Winnsboro Red Raiders in a must win game for WR..West Rusk is open this week. Gladewater (4-1) and Sabine (4-1) have a lock on the top two playoff spots...if Tatum (2-3) can upset Gladewater and Winnsboro can knock off Mineola (3-2) that would set up a four-way tie for the other two spots. It appears that West Rusk (3-3) needs Winnsboro and Tatum to lose to lock in a playoff spot and would be the third place team virtue their win over Mineola. Below ~ RB Gavin Smith scores the winning TD for the Raiders Friday night against Winnsboro, 37-33

In 1927, Leonard Ray and Bernie McCreary tallied scores in the second quarter on pass receptions from Ross as the Loboes knocked off Gilmer 12-0 to cap a near perfect regular season. In 1933, Durham Bivins and Jim Whitten led the way, as Whitten returned a 100 yard pass interception and followed it up with a 70 yard pass touchdown as the Lobos knocked off Lufkin at Panther Stadium, 29-12. In 1938, Gladewater knocked off Longview, 26-6, at Lobo Stadium. In 1949, Jerry Stewart would steal the show for the Bears of Gladewaters with four touchdowns. After falling into a 34-7 deficit heading into the 4th quarter, Sonny Jones and the Lobos would pull to within 34-27 at Bear Stadium but that was as close as they would get as the Bears hung on for the victory. In 1955, Dub Thomas and Tony Rothrock tallied touchdowns in the first quarter and the Lobo defense would hold the Mavericks to 146 yards on the day as Longview knocked off Marshall, 31-7, at Maverick Stadium. In 1967, Longview would take a 13-6 lead into the 4th quarter against #2 Richardson, but the Eagles would dominate the 4th quarter with two Mack Roger touchdowns in a 21-13 Richardson victory at Lobo Stadium. In 1972, Jeff Brumbaugh would tally twice as Longview was held to 158 yards total on the night in a 27-0 dominating performance by the Plano Wildcats at the Cotton Bowl. In 2001, Longview and Allen would battle back and forth until the Lobos trailed the Eagles, 20-17 heading into the 4th. Joel Armstrong led the Lobos to the Allen 48 with 12 seconds to play, before the Lobos were tackled in bounds as the Allen 33 and time run out on the Longview comeback. In 2007, Mark Johnson would tally twice as Longview jumped out to a 21-0 lead over South Garland. Both teams would trade touchdowns in the 2nd half but the Lobos were not going to be denied and held on to a 28-14 victory over the Colonels in Texas Stadium. In 2012, Tory White would rush for two touchdowns, including a 99 yard rush, as Longview rolled up 468 yards rushing and 574 yards total in a 57-25 beat down of the Jesuit Rangers at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.

  17. Two teams that have played in fits and starts all season... with Tenaha clinching district last week, Maud and Overton are fighting for who plays who in the postseason. 3-0 Tenaha 2-1 Overton 2-2 Timpson 1-2 Maud 0-3 Mount E. 0-4 Fruitvale Hmm, do three teams go into the postseason, or four? Because at 1-2, Maud is on the outside looking in. If they win, that's a three-way tie for second but I'm not sure how the tire-breaker would work. That would mean they beat Overton, who beat Timpson, who beat Maud, who beat Overton, who beat Timpson, who beat Maud, who beat... With a win, Overton would finish second in 11-2A and likely face Evadale in bi-district. Man, I'm not sure what'd be a neutral site for that game... Lufkin? Maud had a pretty hot start, so I don't know what happened against Timpson, but I reckon we'll have to score more than 9 points to beat them. Plus, I don't think this one's gonna come down to a last-second field goal. If Overton leads late, they'll run out the clock. If Maud leads late, they'll probably try to run it up for the sake of playoff calculations (I know I would). The Cards are usually tough at home (3-0 this season), so the Mustangs are gonna have to grab some momentum early to offset the homefield advantage. Can they do it? We'll see...
  18. Who wins the district and what order will the playoff teams be seeded? Maud Cardinals Mt Enterprise Wildcats Overton Mustangs Tenaha Tigers Timpson Bears
  19. Overton vs. Normangee Wildcat Stadium, Whitehouse 7 p.m., Friday, November 14 The Mustangs are riding high after surviving their nailbiting 30-28 win over Maud, while the Panthers hope to get back on track after a shellacking by Iola. Both are programs in the midst of rebuilding. Overton is a very young team, with sophomores and freshmen that start on both sides of the ball. The Panthers have more senior starters than the Mustangs have seniors, but Overton's youngsters are actually more experienced in the post-season than Normangee's, as this is the school's third-straight playoff appearance. I don't know much about our friends from down south, but I'm certain they're not willing to settle for "one and done." Looking at their schedule, they've won and lost some close games, so I suspect they've got what it takes to play four quarters. Having taken on some tough squads in Mart and Iola, they won't be intimidated by the young Mustang upstarts. Overton is showing steady improvement since a disappointing loss to Timpson with a hard-fought loss to speedy Tenaha, a surprising rout of Mount Enterprise, then last night's gutsy performance against a determined Cardinal squad. There's a lot of excitement and confidence bubbling up, and the team seems to be showing a consistency that has eluded them for most of the season. Normangee will win if... they can make big plays on offense. Overton has a plodding, time-consuming offense. If the Panthers can force a shootout, they'll keep the Mustangs off-balance. On defense Normangee has to load the box to slow down Overton's three-headed rushing attack. Overton will win if... they don't get in 3rd and Long too often, and hold on to the dang ball. Mustang junior halfback Julian Herndon (6-2, 210lbs) can run the ball 30-40 times easy, but speedy junior Kam Hawkins and explosive sophomore Tanner Lee can break the big play. If Overton's running game gets rolling, the Panther D is gonna have a long night. Defensively the Mustangs don't have to pitch a shutout, just prevent the big play. I predict the Mustangs will control the clock on offense, bend but not break on defense. The game will be close throughout, with Overton pulling away late. The Mustangs win the battle of the kelly green teams, advancing to the next round: 33-20.
  20. Maud at Overton 7:30 p.m. Friday Coach Roy Stadium Two teams with a lot in common, and some pretty competitive matchups in recent years. They've played for playoff position and district titles, so having something on the line is nothing new. This year it's the third and final playoff spot. The winner has a shot at the postseason. The loser starts shooting hoops. A lot in common between these two teams, including their results against common opponents. This one's too close to call. I vacillate between homer and poormouther on this'n, but, really, I think it depends on which team plays consistently for four quarters. Yeah yeah, it sounds like something John Madden might say, but it's legit. Both teams have squandered leads and given up games they should've won. The winner is gonna have to play a complete game. With fingers crossed, I think Overton takes this one—scoring late and holding on for a hard-fought win by a narrow margin.
