The Longview Lobos have opened the 2022 5A Division I State playoffs with two resounding victories, that has seen junior Taylor Tatum take completely over the games. Tatum, through two playoffs games, has eight touchdowns and over 450 yards of offense, the most by any Lobo in program history through two playoff games. The 38-17 win, Longview's 7th consecutive 20+ point win, over Frisco Lone Star moves the Lobos into a familiar territory of the Regional Semi-Finals. For the first time in three seasons, it will not be Denton Ryan awaiting the Lobos in the Regional Semis. This will be Longview's 14th trip to the Regional Semis in John King's 19 seasons as Lobo head coach. It also is a round that has seen the most Lobo losses in a single round. The Lobos are 7-6 under John King in the previous 13 trips to this round of the playoffs. While the Lobos only have to look back to 2018 for their last Regional Semi-Final victory, Port Arthur Memorial enters tonight's contest looking for their first victory this deep into the playoffs since 2011 when the Titans defeated Spring Branch Memorial, 24-14. The Titans enter the third round of the playoffs for just the sixth time in program history, holding a 1-4 record in those games. Their two playoff wins this season are more than the Titans have had combined in the last five seasons. Port Arthur Memorial last entered this round of the playoffs back in 2017 when the Titans were defeated by Temple, 33-29. This will be Longview's 11th all-time game against Port Arthur ISD but the first since a 1947 2-0 victory against Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson. The Lobos and Yellowjackets faced off ten times between 1937 and 1947 with Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson taking a 5-3-2 series lead in those ten games. Longview and Port Arthur Memorial will each be playing their second game at Lufkin's Abe Martin Stadium this season. Longview previously defeated Lufkin, 56-7, down at Abe Martin back in September while the Titans escaped with a 52-50 four overtime victory last week against the Wakeland Wolverines. This will be Longview's 28th overall game at Abe Martin, dating back to its opening 1973. Longview will be looking to make history to win its fourth contest in a row at Abe Martin. The Lobos have won 3 in a row at Lufkin three times in its history, and is currently riding that three game winning streak dating back to 2019. The Lobos will be looking to even it's record at Abe Martin as well, as they currently hold a 13-14 record all-time there. While this will be the first ever time to play a playoff game at Abe, this will be the third time Longview has faced off in a playoff game in Lufkin. Longview defeated Lufkin, 19-0, in 1937 before falling to Lufkin, 33-0, in 1942. In 1915, Marshall knocked off Longview, 24-0, at Tee Pee Park. In 1926, Gilmer defeated Longview, 7-0, in Fair Park in Longview. In 1937, Marvin Jordan led the way with three touchdowns as seven different Lobos scored in a 57-12 victory over Gladewater at Bear Stadium to cap a 10-0 regular season. In 1943, Longview held Gladewater to 67 total yards as 7 turnovers by the Lobos weren’t enough to turn away a 42-7 victory over the Bears at Bear Stadium. The Lobo defense produced 10 turnovers themselves in the win. In 1948, Gladewater ended a 9-game Lobo winning streak thanks to Bobby Honeycutt’s three touchdowns in a 33-7 beatdown of Longview at Lobo Stadium. Six Lobo turnovers doomed Longview on the night. In 1954, Dub Thomas tallied three touchdowns to help lift the Lobos over Marshall, 27-18, on Thanksgiving Day at Lobo Stadium. In 1989, Ernest Hunter rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns but the passing performance of Huntsville quarterback Steve Clements overcame the Lobos in a 24-14 victory by the Hornets at Texas Stadium. Clements passed for 266 yards and three touchdowns. In 2006, a 96 yard kickoff return, a 42-yard field goal followed by a blocked field goal in the dying seconds were enough to lift Garland to a 24-21 win over Longview at Texas Stadium. The Lobos managed 377 yards on the night and held the Owls to just 117 but two short fields in the third quarter were enough to give the win to Garland. In 2017, beyond 462 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, Longview ran passed Dallas Jesuit, 75-43, at Kincaide Stadium in Dallas. Jaquan Edwards had four touchdowns while Keilyn Williams rushed for three in a game that saw the Lobos score 11 touchdowns on just 36 snaps.
