Ranger manager there LEADER admits to drugs use.

Why do we still support these type of athletes? We also have the steriod use and Woods story.

We let college coaches cheat and change schools before thye get into trouble, the list just goes on and on and on. At every level of sports. WHY................. do we accept it?

This is just the tip of the ice berg. :nowhearthis:

It is a by-product of what happens when technology and voyerism cross paths.

The sky is not falling.

Sports are still good in and of themselves and are still "bigger" than individual idiots.

It's a reflection of our culture. The days of Tom Landry and Roger Staubach are fading fast away. Morals have slipped from the home and the work place. When Tiger Woods comes back the ratings will go out the roof while Tim Tebow is openly mocked because of his faith. Instead of things being black or white things just seem gray to the masses.

There is an entire lack of responsibility. Imo these athletes have been babied. They are allowed to get away with more because of their status. It starts in middle school. If you are talented all you have to do is focus on sports schoolwork and responsibility fall to the wayside. I'm not saying there arent good people..Tebow is amazing. He is so confident in his faith and he uses his status to help others. But for every Tebow it seems you have 3 Pacman Jones. I'll never forget a few years ago the Pacers and Pistons had a huge brawl. I was so and am ashamed that I am from Indiana. I had a friend tell me something that these player's lack...It is something I have learned from my own father as well...My dad gave me his last name and it is my duty to protect it and bring it honor. Maybe it is the lack of a father figure. But when you combine money stature and lack of character together you get a truely toxic mix. When a player kills a human being or fights dogs and is allowed to continue making millions there is something wrong. What is wrong with this country? In our own way we idolize criminals and then applaud them for just staying out of trouble. It is absolutely sickening

Most of the time, it's only the bad news that gets reported. You don't see all the professional players that donate to charity and do other noteworthy deeds.

This, no one thinks Arnold Palmer is the worst human alive but Tiger Woods is. In the 70's everyone in sports was on speed.

Values are relative to your situation or so says our society. Then when our society treats groups of people like gods and lavish them when ungodly amounts of wealth, not for what they produce but for mere entertainment purposes we should not be surprised by how low there values are.

I agree with you both.

Again, another excellent post that I totally agree with. We've become a society that has to be entertained rather than knowing how to entertain ourselves and we don't mind paying the big bucks for it. Therefore, the value system is turned upside down. Why does my teacher wife make $40K/year after 25 years of teaching 6,7,8th grades and molding young minds but the football coach makes double or more and teaches nothing. It's ok though because I'm proud of her accomplishments and what she's done for the kids she's played a part in their young lives. The money is really not the issue, it's more about what our creator asks us to do.

It's all gonna change in this country soon and it's not going to be pretty or pleasant for many many people.

When you are a cleric in the Church of the Megadome, then you end up acting like it. Our priorities are so skewed these days. People would cut English out of school to save the sports programs. That is how far out of touch we have become with what is important and what is just a distraction or entertainment. We are going down the same path as Rome, because we are ignorant of history or we ignore it.

I find it funny when people say things like..our values are slipping or sports stars TODAY have less morals and so on. No..we simply just know about it instantly and it is plastered all over the news, web,tv for 24/7. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE.

Players in the past still boozed up chased women cheated on their wife did drugs and got into all the same problems that the stars of today do. It was just not splashed all over the paper when Mickey Mantle got drunk and drives his car off the road after spending the night with a woman he met in a bar while his wife was out of town.

Players in the past wanted more money just like players now. They just did not have the avenue to go for it all because the owners had the rules in their back pocket keeping players basically as indentured servants.

So if you want to ask "what is wrong" with sports today..it is simply because of ESPN cable tv and the internet WE as fans know to much compared to fans in the past.

So you are saying everything is the same as it was in 1950's and 1960's we just hear about it more often now becuase of ESPN? I gotta disagree with you CoachBennet. I wont argue that people have been making bad choices since Adam and Eve but I will argue with how often "bad choices" are made are not at the same level as back in the day, but worse. Becuase what one generation says "is bad" the next generation will say "well maybe it aint that bad", what one generation says "well that aint so bad" the next will say "it is ok", and over time things get worse and worse.

all I know is as far as sports go today's stars are just more exposed IMO...It is just like in the real world..we always hear about the teenage pregnancy rates and how bad they are now..when stats wise they are almost exactly the same as they were in the 40's and 50's...The differnce? It was not reported back then in newspapers or on a CNN

I think sports stars from the 50's and 60's and earlier got put on these pedastels because the news did not report on them 24/7 and people just dont want to admit they were just as flawed

The Cowboys had their coke scandal in the 70's. I think we simply hear about it more today, because of media coverage. Read Jim Bouton's "Ball Four" . It's been happening since the beginning of time. What makes us think that our generation are any better or worse than the past ?

I agree. When the folks doing right get as much attention as the "ME crowd",then something might change.
