collincoguy
Last night the Keller ISD school board voted to charge those students who use the school bus to arrive and depart the school a charge of $150 per semester. If a family has two or more kids who ride the bus they will only be charged $150 for the first child and $135 for all other children. Being that there is two semester in the school year that can hit a middle income family pretty hard. Keller ISD superintendent respondent that due to budget cuts, and the lack of support for a property tax increase they really did not have much choice. The reason I write this in the High School Sports forum is that today many people who were calling in to talk radio in the Dallas area were upset that this same school district just recently chose not to charge those students who participate in extracurricular activities the largest being band and football. The estimated savings to the district as reported by the channel 8 news would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000 which would cover if not greatly reduce the cost of student bus fare. Some parents are stating that the charge is so high because it is being used to fund the usage of these school buses by the sports programs when they have to travel. What I was amazed to hear was the Superintendent saying that the use of these buses by these programs is not considered in the overall annual cost for the transportation department. Man that can't be right and will we start to see more and more of these types of issues.
DaveTV1
Maybe they should do what I did from the 2-9th grade and walk or ride their bike to school.

Thats what I had to do too, but Celina was a very small town back then and my parents said they had no worries of harm coming to us when we walked to school. Keller is not small and I can understand the parents being upset especially if and I say again if the money they pay for transportation is also being used to pay for athletic transportation at no cost to those students who participate. JasonDellaRosa
I would imagine the cost of transportation for athletics is tabulated under the athletic budget, since it can vary from year to year based on schedules. the transportation budget for getting kids to school won't vary unless there is a major population shift. osup116
The supt. of Keller ISD makes 388,000 a year. The parents are paying to let their kids ride a bus the taxpayers bought. That runs on fuel the taxpayers bought. Sounds like double taxation. Did the Supt. take American History when he was getting his PHD.

Well that has to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard.  Nevermind the fact that things today are not as they were when you were in school, but you have no idea how far these kids may live from the school they attend.  Well, unless you walked the route all around the loop it's only 4.40 miles taking 69 through the "city" to RE Lee. I'm sure there were other short cuts you could have taken that Mapquest doesn't point out. Since the average american male walks a pace of approximately 3 miles an hour what in the world were you doing those other two hours? LOL

Lobo97
no you find someone to help out. to keep from paying all of that money. Â That's not the argument. If everyone had someone to help out, their kids wouldn't be riding the school bus to begin with. Not everyone is fortunate to enjoy the same support system as everyone else, and this isn't happening in Tyler it's happening in Keller so you have no idea the distance some of these kids may have to go. Let's also not forget the fact that not every parent wants their Elementary kid walking that distance to school. Again, this isn't 20-30 years ago anymore. There are FAR more dangers to worry about today than we did then.

When you're a kid, 2 miles is a BIG difference. With that said, I'm now wondering exactly how far it was. I mean, first you said 7, now it's 5. First you said you got to school at 7, now it's 6. WildcatsRule
Sounds like the choice for the school district is to shut down the buses or charge people to ride them. A little bit more "figure it out for yourself", and a little bit less "I can't. It's too hard" would do this entire country some good.

Well lets start by just stating that you were a JR in High School which is not the same as a young child. Second your above statement as to how you became a student at Lee with Coach Ubanks recruiting you on his summer team because your statement "wanted me to come over to Lee". Why how is this not a UIL violation. I mean you mapped the whole thing out as to how he had everything worked out by working you out on his summer team so you could be ready to help him win district when school started...Oh well that is far another post. This one is about the cost of those parents in Keller who will now have to pay to have their children ride the bus. One lady said she had three kids and that her husband was a deployed soldier I am not sure where he is deployed. Anyway she said this extra cost was a big burden for one this was just decides so there has been very little time to prepare or save for this expense. The district is stating that payment must be received within the next two weeks. Some are asking for some type of monthly fee or a payment plan, but the school said that presents it on set of problems. They did not go into details. osup116
What I've gathered is those activists that fought ( and won! ) against the recent proposed property tax increase are now more or less calling for the supts resignation. But then again who has an issue with the $388,000 salary? This country is all about "free" markets and capitalism correct?  Working a state funded job is neither of those. The taxpayers should be all over the school board.
