Lufkin had a very good Spring with 136 kids out for JV and Varsity. The Spring game rosters had 78 listed on the varsity and 58 on the JV. Good participation. Lufkin will have a few 3 year guys coming back for their senior year. Have some depth at several key positions that we haven't had for a couple of years. Have a very good crop of JV guys moving up to fill the holes left by graduation. Should be a better year for the Panthers than 2013 with all the injuries and the 5-6 finish.

I normally don't take much from an intra squad scrimmage, especially after they have practiced against each other for 4 weeks, however you can see where certain players show the potential to step up, fill some holes and help the team during the coming year. They for the most part looked solid across the board. Always something to improve on in all phases of the game. However, an improved more diverse defensive strategy has helped IMO and a few new tweaks and additions to the offense looked interesting. Lufkin use to run some Pro sets back in the Reggie days and they have brought some of that back. Very large and tall O line with three of them 6'3" or better and 295 plus. back ups have size too. Good mix of experience and young in the LB corp this year with some size. Haven't had any real LB in about 4 years. Deep WR group with three kids 6'2" or better, good hands, w/ KeKe Coutee in the slot. Have 4 very good RB prospects to back up or play the two man sets with senior Stephen Sowell. QB Cumbie comes back for his senior year and has grown taller and bigger since last year. Some quality back ups in #14 Brooks, #13 Rogers ( will be the QB for Lufkin in 2015-16) and #12 Abney. Rogers, a sophomore will start at WR this year. Abney is a back up slot receiver.

Kicking game will be in good hand with 3 very capable kickers. Javier Montes had a 52 yard FG in the scrimmage and the other kicker #24 had a 44 yarder, both had plenty of distance.

Of course I expect about 10-15 of these guys on the varsity spring roster will start next year on the JV. So Lufkin should still suit out 60 - 65 kids, which is plenty.

Coaches all seem to be pleased with everything, all will be ready to finish putting in the rest of the offense and defense sets when they come back in August. Panthers begin 7 on 7 now and host their own SQT on June 6th with 12-16 teams on hand. Lufkin will be alright this year, very competitive group.

Is the offense the same?

If you notice my comments on this new district 16-5A have been very open ones about the competition. Our Lobo fans over in 15-5A, don't see our new district as a tough one as I do. That's okay. While some think JT and Lufkin will dominate things ( wish that were true) , we must give credit to Ennis that made a very nice run in the playoffs and gave Aledo all they could handle. Nacogdoches is not a one trick pony either they return most of their team from 2013. Whitehouse had a great year in 2013 and although they graduate most of that group, the playoff run is usually a carryover to the next group. Regardless to some people's opinion , I believe it will be a dog fight for Lufkin and JT and that is a good thing. A program should not want it any other way. Corsicana is still my dark horse team. I think Jacksonville and Lindale are the odd teams out here. The Ennis program is on the upswing again and will be a tough district out for Lufkin and JT. Nacogdoches and Whitehouse IMO will play huge rolls in the outcome of this district, but to think JT and Lufkin will own things in this new district? I don't think so.....:)

I pretty much agree with all of this. In my opinion I see the district finishing up:

1.Ennis

2. JT

3/4 Nac/WHouse

Whitehouse seems to have lost quite a bit, but they may suprise us all! Corsicana is always a suprise to me...they have some great looking athletes, but couldn't get it going last year. Jacksonville has a great qb, but didn't have much to support him last year. I saw Lindale at the Gilmer and ETBU 7 on 7. They look more athletic than they have in the past, but still have a lot gaps to fill.

If Lufkin does.not make the playoffs in this district with what they have coming back, there will be big fires lit in Lufkin by their fans. They have been very unsatisfied with playoff results for a few years now anyway. Not making a big showing in this new district will not help the cause at all. It could happen.

Why?

You said this district will be more competitive/better than your old one. Y'all struggled to even get into the post season last year. So to you it shouldn't be a big surprise if Lp struggles to get in or even miss.

I like where you are going with this, but not having Lufkin in top is a mistake. JT has owned this district until last losing for the first time in 20 games. Going into District Whitehouse the one to beat because they are defending district champs

PackAttack,

you kind of contradict yourself a little in your last few posts... Your first post was very informative and told us how and why you felt LP would be better in 2014 than they were last year, then you give credit to Ennis, JT, WH and Nac saying how tough your new district will be (which I 100% agree with that!! Not sure there is a tougher 5A district in Texas) Then you say some suggest LP and JT will dominate (while you disagree) but go on to say that if LP doesn't at least make the playoffs there will be "fires lit in Lufkin by their fans"

Here's my take on 16-5A, Lufkin makes the playoffs, if they don't I agree that staff may be in trouble (not that I think they would deserve to, but it's becoming the nature of the business). District Champ is Lufkin (giving them the nod over Ennis because they get them at home) , 2nd is Ennis, 3rd JT, 4th and by a slim victory over WH is NAC (once again going with the home team) So I have Whitehouse, Corsicana, Jacksonville and Lindale starting their hoop dreams first in 16-5A!

Lufkin has to Tyler to play JT.

I think Ennis will give JT trouble. And like I said, seems like WHouse has lost a lot. But I know they'll still be strong.

I will have to wait and see. JT is playing three power run teams in the preseason to get ready for Ennis.

Very true. If they can have success with those 3, they may not have any trouble with Ennis. Which may surprise Ennis. From what I heard when realignment came out, they weren't too concerned with their new district. I hope some 16-5A teams can suprise them!
