Pondering PLAYOFFS & OFFICIATING

DOB

Recommended Posts

I can say that the officiating in the playoffs improves greatly. The teams of officials that you see are more technically and mechanically sound than what you see during the regular season. This should not be surprising because, just like the playoff teams, the chapters send their best to the playoffs.

But in my many years of coaching and watching playoffs, I have observed that there is one glaring difference between games officiated during the regular season and those officiated during the playoffs.

I'm not going to say yet because I want to see if others have observed and noticed the same thing or is it just me.

I just wish they could review the Tatum coldsprings game and do something about the kid punching our QB in the privates more than once. I know he is a teenager. but something should be done. He should not be allowed to play in any UIL event from now on.

The regular season refs must not know the rules. I know in our game Friday night there were no flags thrown on 2 different things we have been flagged on more than once in regular season. The main one is the offsides on kick off. I do have a question. On kick off if the ball lands in the end zone is it an automatic touch back? The ref would blow the whistle even though player never touched ball.

As soon as the ball crosses into the end zone it is a touchback...no one has to touch it or cover it up...also if a player catches the kickoff in the end zone it is still a automatic touchback...a player does not have the option to bring it out anymore...

We had one Friday night where the kid caught the ball tight on the line and his momentum carried him in and he was allowed to return the kick. All I could think of was that they determined he had caught the ball within the field of play and although his momentum carried him in he had to return the kick.

But I thought the TB rule stating that if a ball went into the endzone that it was an automatic TB was an International Rule and not a rule here in Texas. In fact now that I think about it I'm pretty sure we had another kick that was caught two yards deep returned.

Ok thanks. Not many schools our size have a kicker that can put it in the end zone so I have never really thought about it. We don't do it much even though we have the kicker to do it. Leonard did not think we could do it either because we OSK most of the time. We did have a very strong wind that helped.

Both our playoff games have been officiated pretty good I think. Had a seven man crew from ET chapter and a five man crew from Houston chapter. Seem to be letter the kids play in the playoffs more so.

Bingo ... I have always noticed that there are fewer holding calls in the playoffs than in the regular season ... it doesn't mean that there's less holding .... only that it seems that chapters are of the opinion that they will let them play and try not to affect the outcome of the game as much as possible ... can be good or bad .... I watched a playoff game on video this weekend where the Tight End held (kept his arms tight but wrapped his hands around the DE's arms) on nine straight plays that the offense ran to his side ... it was a solidly systemic technique, which to me is indication that he learned it from somewhere ...

No shortage of holding call against US in our game with the Rice Birds...

Wonder where the chapter was from? I do know that if you look at playoff stats you will see that teams you pass a lot are more likely to get them in the playoffs than running teams ... I looked randomly at nine teams that are still playing and the overall relationship was that they averaged 4.8 penalties per game in the regular season and only 1.67 in their playoff games ....

lol. The J Dawgs had the same issue friday night while we were beating up those Stafford Spartans. Literally our left guard #68 had 3 consecutive holding calls one of them negating a beautifull 60 yard td run. where the week the before against kilgore my Dawgs had one penalty the whole game and came in the last couple minutes on a roughing the passer.

to your point DOB i do agree more so than not for sure. Prime example being (and of course it drove myself and fellow Dawg fans i sit with craazy!) our last two regular season games one at home the other away when there was an offsides the officials would immediatly blow the play dead. Friday night the officials would throw the flag but let play keep going allowing it to be as we football fans call it "free play".

I know what you mean. We have a designed play that does not work as good when they blow whistle. Lol. Our Bi-dist game our QB had a td called back because the refs thought someone else had the ball and blew the whistle when that person got tackled. A team should not be penalized just because the refs got fooled also. Almost made my head explode. Lol

That is incorrect. The receiving team can bring the ball put if he catches it before it touches the endzone or if he touches it in the field of play and it rolls into the endzone. The only automatic touchback is if it hits the ground before being touched or goes out of the back of the endzone.

Yea. I was wrong...but I have seen several get blown dead even when it is caught in the end zone....I called a ref friend of mine and he said that maybe the official thought that the player wasn't making an attempt to come out...
