GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW

How close of a series can you get? Despite playing 76 games, spanning 82 years, the two old rivals have seen themselves play to a stalemate. Whether it’s the non-district record between the two districts, or the district meetings or whether it’s the eight playoff contests between one another, the Lobos and Panthers enter the 77th edition of Longview/Lufkin looking to break the tie. Last November’s 28 point comeback by the Lobos to knock the Panthers out of the post season is everything this rivalry has become as the two schools remain deadlocked at 36 wins a’piece and four ties between them. Despite Lufkin’s dominating 44-14 opening week victory last season, and what looked like a repeat of such in the Bi-District round of the post season, the Lobos used a spark late in the 2nd quarter from Emmanuel Gordon to propel them into a 2nd half comeback that was one for the ages. Tylan Miller’s three touchdown second half and Jordan Wyatt’s two point conversion catch paved the way for the Lobos as they outscored the Panthers 43-14 after falling behind 28-0 midway through the 2nd quarter. The game marked the first time Longview had passed over 300 yards since 2000, and for only the third time in school history. The win gave Longview their 4th win in 5 meetings over the Panthers, and their 6th in the past 9 contests, putting away any thoughts of the 11-game win streak the Pack had held over the Lobos just eight seasons ago. Despite the Lobo first round victory, the two schools both ended their season in disappointment. The next week, the Lobos fell behind 16 point to Mansfield Lake Ridge before mounting a comeback again, this time in the 2nd quarter alone. However, it wasn’t enough as Lake Ridge took over in the 2nd half and held a 37-28 lead before the Lobos put forth one last ditch effort. A missed 49-yard field goal attempt, that just barely missed to the left, was all that kept Longview from moving onto their 8th consecutive Regional round appearance, as the Lobos fell 37-35. Lufkin looks to build off a 6-5 season, one that saw the Panthers lose all five games by a combined 20 points. Despite the closeness in results, the Panthers fell to an 11-11 combined record the past two seasons. Prior to the past two seasons, Lufkin had lost just 11 combined games the four previous seasons. The past two seasons combined for the most losses in back to back years for the Pack since 1994-1995 during Jim Slaughter’s last season as head coach and John Outlaw’s first season as leader. Lufkin comes into Lobo Stadium this season looking to end a four game skid in Longview, having last defeated the Lobos inside Lobo Stadium back in 2003 14-0. Just four meetings have been held in Longview since that last district game between the two schools, with the Lobos scoring an average of 39 points in the four contests. Longview will open the 2015 season looking to make history against their arch rival. Head coach John King enters the game against Lufkin tied with Doug Cox for most wins ever by a Lobo head coach with 120. Doug Cox finished as head coach of Longview after the 1987 season with a 120-34-4 overall record in 14 seasons. John King enters his 12th season as Longview head coach with an overall record of 120-28.

ON THIS DATE IN LOBO HISTORY: August 28th

In 2009, Longview will welcomed the defending 5A State Champion Allen Eagles into Lobo Stadium for the season opener. In the first half, the Eagles showed why they had won the school’s first state title a season ago, jumping out to a stunning 17-0 lead going into the break. Five Lobo turnovers, two lost, plagued the Lobos throughout the night but once Longview found it’s groove the Eagles couldn’t cope. Carey Fortson started the comeback before Da’Cedric Hunt and Tyler McCray punched the ball over the goal line to give the Lobos a 21-17 lead going into the final frame. The two clubs traded fourth quarter touchdowns as the Lobos knocked off Allen, 28-25.

I am not going to vote in the poll. We all know this is a huge rival game for both schools. Not bad for a season opener. Lobo Stadium is a tough place to win, just like Abe is for Lufkin. We all know that winning this game early does not represent where these two team will be the middle of November, as Lufkin can attest from last season. On paper Longview has a ton of returning starters, 49 seniors I believe, while Lufkin replaces a senior core that had carried them for two years, although those years were 5-6 and 6-5, I would not read too much into that. Lufkin will be young at many spots. From 7 on 7 it looks like some potential exist to be okay at some point in the season for the skill guys. This will be an intense game because it always is, the kids on both sides get up for this game, even if we played 4 times a year, it would be the same. Longview should be the clear favorite here, I would expect nothing less based on what the Lobos have coming back and playing at home. It will be a learning curve for the young Panthers. Lufkin starts the season with three straight road games @ Longview, @ Tyler Lee , @ Shreveport and West Monroe. Then an off week then finally we open at Abe in district against Nacogdoches on 9/25. Lufkin will know a lot more about where they stand by then. Longview 's O Line will be hard to stop.

Will 007 be making the trip unlike the last time Lp came to the View?

I'm not making any promises. After the lost last season in Tyler, I said that I wasn't going to Lv, but I'm not sure now. Honestly, I haven't been doing much driving since losing my mom last month, but I definitely want to go to it. I want to know if the defense is better under the new DC.
