The Lobos and Mavericks meet on the gridiron for the 105th time, with Marshall’s Maverick Stadium the setting for this potential 15-5A District Championship match up. The Lobos, fresh off their first shutout since 2012 in a 51-0 romping of Greenville, head into Maverick Stadium full of confidence after back to back 51+ point margin victories to open district play. One of those 51+ point margin victories came against crosstown rival Pine Tree as the Lobos defeated Pine Tree two weeks ago 61-6 in Lobo Stadium. That same team, took Marshall down to the wire in last week’s second district game for the Mavs as Marshall struggled all night long before pulling out a 35-28 nail biter. The win improved Marshall to 2-0 in district play, and 5-0 overall for the first time since 1996. The Lobos and Mavericks will meet for the 105th time this coming Friday, and for the 83rd consecutive season…dating back to the 1933 season. And while the series is one of the longest in the state of Texas, the Lobos and Mavericks haven’t exactly been the closest of competitors. In 1968, the Mavericks defeated Longview 20-3 in Lobo Stadium…the following season began a streak that saw the Lobos defeated Marshall 19 consecutive seasons. Following 12 seasons of battling back and forth, the Lobos currently are trying to match the previous streak..holding a 14-game winning streak over the Mavericks that dates back to the 2001 season. During the streak, the Lobos and Mavericks have battled to just four contests that have been decided by two scores or less. Last season, the Lobos defeated Marshall 56-13 inside Lobo Stadium. Marshall hasn’t scored more than three scores on Longview since a 30 point night in 2009 during a 47-30 loss. The 56 points were the most a Longview team has ever scored on a Marshall squad, and just the second time the Lobos have scored 50 on Marshall. Marshall opened the series with an 18-2-2 series lead in the first 22 games from 1909 to 1931. After taking a year off in 1932, the Lobos and Mavs have met every year (82 seasons). In those games, Longview is 56-23-3. Since the original streak started in 1969, the Lobos are 37-8-0 against Marshall. The Lobos also returned to Marshall for the first time since a 26-14 victory over the Mavs in Maverick Stadium. In the new Maverick Stadium, Longview has found it almost as a home away from home…sporting a 13-4-0 record with the first match up happening in 1981 there. The Lobos haven’t lost in Marshall since 2000, where they fell 38-28. Regardless of past games, this week’s game has potential to be for the 15-5A district championship. Marshall has not won a district championship since 2005, while Longview is looking for their 11th district championship in 12 seasons under John King. Longview was rewarded with a 2-0 victory. In 1931, Shreveport Byrd humiliated Longview by a 50-0 scoreline. In 1936, Longview knocked off Fort Worth Polytechnic 18-0 inside Lobo Stadium. In 1942, Robert Crowley’s three touchdown night spearheaded Longview to a 42-7 victory over Athens at Lobo Stadium. John Dunaway, Bill Hughes and J.T. Jeffress also added scores for the Lobos. In 1953, Robert Bayliss’ 20 yard touchdown reception from George Myers on the first play of the fourth quarter that ensured a 27-20 victory for the Lobos over Palestine inside Lobo Stadium. George Myers rushed for two touchdowns on the night as the quarterback threw for a then school record 298 yards. In 1959, a last second comeback attempt from Longview fell short as the Lobos fell to West Monroe in Rebel Stadium, 13-7. Douglas Bruner was Longview’s only score on the night on a 33 yard pass in the 4th quarter. The Lobos turned the ball over 5 times on the night in a game that saw Kim Flint’s pass intercepted with 28 seconds remaining that ended any chance of a comeback. In 1964, Longview fell to Houston Smiley, 21-18, in their first ever visit to Jones-Cowart Stadium. In 1970, James Lomax rushed for two touchdowns that saw Jeb Blount added a field goal in the 2nd and David Hiett score in the 3rd quarter as the Lobos rolled over John Tyler 27-8 at Lobo Stadium. Longview’s defense held John Tyler to just 27 yards on the night, including just 5 rushing yards, and grab two safeties in the same game. In 1981, Kenny Frazier rushed for two touchdowns in the first half inside Abe Martin Stadium in the only two scores of the game as Longview knocked off Lufkin, 12-0. In 1987, Ray Allison ran for three touchdowns and Eric Faggett added on two as well as the Lobos rushed for 308 yards rushing on the night in a 50-0 defeat of Nacogdoches. In 1992, LaMarcus White rushed for a 70 yard touchdown in the first quarter and Devin Lawson caught a 40 yard pass in the 3rd as the Lobos knocked off Lufkin 14-6 at Lobo Stadium. In 1998, in arguably the biggest match up between the old foes, the #1 Lobos and #4 Mavericks met at Lobo Stadium in a game that still is talked about to this day. Fred Talley’s 226 yard rushing night wasn’t enough to slow down Kendrick Starling who finished the night with 157 yards receiving behind two touchdowns as well as a kickoff return for a score, as the Mavericks upset Longview 35-28 in double overtime. In 2009, Tyler McCray rushed for three touchdowns behind a 453 total yard night for the Lobo offense in a 44-0 thrashing of Mount Pleasant. It was Longview’s first ever visit to Sam Parker Field and first visit to MP in 81 years.
The Real Mavfan
Lobos take this one fairly easily i believe. Marshalls defense wont be able to stop Longviews running game. The Mavs may be able to put up a few points since we are fairly balanced. If Marshall plays anywhere as badly as they played tonight it will be over and ugly quick. Five0pd310
Marshall won't play again like they did tonight. That being said, Longview still wins but I don't believe it will be total domination, by any means.

WP4L
Yall can name the score... But absolutely no way that LV lose this game. PT had too much success against Marshall this week....after absolutely doing nothing against Longview the week before.

The Real Mavfan
Coach Harper is doing well on his own but just my 2 cents worth if we leave Hart at QB and have a 2 rb formation with both Haller and Mills it would be much more difficult for defenses to key on one specific player. It would also keep open the possibility of either run or pass to make it even more difficult. When Haller is at qb its a pretty safe bet hes gonna run it. Mavchamp
They've been desperate since 1969. Tis true. Longview has owned us the last 45 years. Longview been desperate since 1937 though. #shotsfired

But it's hard to say how good honestly when your opponents have been Crandall, Royse City, Arkansas High, PT and Hallsville...although you all did handle up on Hallsville way worse than Texas High did. Weak schedule coming to roost on us. And maybe Texas High too. Like I said.... Never been more disgusted with a win in my life. Pisspoor effort by the Mavs tonight. mav01
The second half play calling was very one dimensional, but usually we are very far from it. They just let haller take over and get the win tonight. We had several long pass plays so haller is far from all we have. Our problem tonight(other than all the fumbles) was not allowing Hart and Haller to be in backfield at same time. When that happens defenses cant key on Haller. It was easy to know what we were doing. We looked like last years early season offense. Haller will need to pass the ball (like he did every night but tonight) if hes goin to play qb. Was our worse coached game of the year by far. Hart in its a pass, Haller in, its a run.
