GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW

Righting the ship was goal #1 for Longview this past week, and the Lobos passed with flying colors. After falling to rival Marshall, 28-25, the week prior for the first time in 15 years, the Lobos hosted Texas High who hadn’t beaten the Lobos since 1984. On Saturday morning, that streak continues as the Lobos rolled out to a 28-0 lead and held on for a 35-14 victory over the Tigers. The win was Longview’s 11th consecutive over Texas High and 40th overall in the series that dates back to 1922. With the win, Longview all but clinched the top seed in the Division I bracket of the playoffs with three games to play unless there are any upsets along the way. Enter, the Mount Pleasant Tigers. Mount Pleasant is fresh off an 0-10 season last year that has seen them improve greatly in Corey Homer’s second season as head coach of the Tigers and right in the thick of the 15-5A playoff race. A win against Longview would do wonders for Mount Pleasant’s playoff chances after dropping a pivotal game against the Pine Tree Pirates. The Tigers are currently tied with Hallsville for the 4th place spot but the Bobcats have the tiebreaker. The Lobos travel to Mount Pleasant for the first time since 2009, and for only the second time since 1928. In all, it will be Longview’s 5th visit to Mount Pleasant where they have yet to lose a game. The Lobos have won four in a row against the Tigers in a series that dates back to 1924 but have seen the two schools face off only 10 previous times. In those 10 meetings, Mount Pleasant has scored more than 10 points in just one contest…the one game they were able to defeat Longview (31-11 in 1930). Longview will be looking for their fifth victory in a row over the Tigers, a streak that dates back to the 1954 season. A win for Longview would keep their district championship hopes alive, as undoubtedly most eyes of Lobo fans will be glued to the Texas High/Marshall contest right up the road in Texarkana.

In 1914, Marshall handed Longview a 31-0 loss at the Fair Grounds in Marshall.

In 1925, the Lobos escaped with a 13-0 victory over Carthage at Fair Park in Longview.

In 1931, Jefferson and Longview held each other to a 0-0 tie at Fair Park in Longview.

In 1936, Longview rolled over Texarkana’s Tigers in a 26-0 beat down of Texas High at Lobo Stadium.

In 1942, J.T Jeffress, Robert Cowley and Ken Abney all went over the goal line for the Lobos in a 21-0 beat down of Kilgore inside R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.

In 1964, David Reese and Glenn Cobb scored first quarter touchdowns for the Lobos but it was all the scoring Longview would do for the day as Tyler Lee scored 22 unanswered in a 22-14 victory over Longview inside Lobo Stadium.

In 1981, a 57 yard flea flicker between John Jean and Tracy Holmes in the fourth quarter sent Texas High to an upset victory over the Lobos, 14-11. Jimmy Motley grabbed the early lead for Longview on a safety before Ronnie Hunter scored the only Lobo touchdown of the day.

in 1987, Marshall jumped out to a 20-7 lead before Mike Bobo went to work. Three touchdowns later, the Lobos took control. Earnest Hunter sealed the victory on a 7 yard run in the fourth quarter as the Lobos knocked off the Mavs 34-22 inside Lobo Stadium.

In 1992, LaMarcus white ran for three touchdowns and 261 yards rushing to bolster Longview’s 482 yard rushing day in a 42-14 shellacking of Tyler Lee at Rose Stadium. Chad Daniels, Fred Coleman, Daydrion Taylor and Alton McAlister also scored for the Lobos in the victory.

In 2009, Carey Fortson returned the opening kickoff all the way for a touchdown and the Lobos rolled all night long to a 45-0 victory over Hallsville at Bobcat Stadium. The Lobos held the bobcats to 94 total yards on the night and just 4 first downs.

#25 Holloman is the RB. He is a junior and is a pretty good back. He has been slowed tremendously the last few weeks but he is still about all we have on offense.

If you are into linemen, we have some big ones that should get some opportunities at the next level. Left tackle is the Caleb Johnson and he is huge and a junior. Thomas Spann is the center and is a pretty good sized kid as well, also a junior. Kobe Mattews is another good looking kid, started as a freshman, also a junior but he did not play against PT.

#3 LaDarrius Patterson will line up some at QB and seems to keep it every single time he lines up at QB so it has not worked very well lately. He is a senior and started as a sophomore with Cannon, Flanagan and Rogers, at receiver but we absolutely cannot throw the ball so it does not really matter who we have at receiver.

Defensively, #2 JK Lee is pretty dang good. He has played CB all year, but played S against PT due to an injury to one of our safeties. He is a junior.

#1 Keenan Brown is the other S, he is a senior and is pretty good as well.

Lots of other kids are contributing on D. We are better defensively that we have been in a long time, which we have been so bad on D for so long, the only way to go was up.

Should not be much of a contest. Agree with Triton, looking for some positives and no injuries for either team. This is the beginning of what could be three long weeks.

I didnt see them beating PT or Hville. With them barely beating Grnville an SS. Was nice to see them get 2 more district wins than everyone expected. Showing improvement, so the next 2 years should be interesting.

Of these three teams who would you rather be?

Well if MP somehow wins 2 of the next 3 which i truly dont see happeening. And if Hallsville and Pine Tree somehow choke then MP will get in. But the odds are against them. They needed to beat Pine Tree and hope Hallsville lost Pine Tree. But I think Pine Tree will get in because they could possibly beat Hallsville.
