GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW

And with that, the 106 regular season of Lobo football comes to end. Just as fast as it had started, Longview strolls into Hallsville for the 4th all-time meeting between the Lobos and the Bobcats to end the regular season..looking to clinch a share of the district 15-5A title and clinch the top spot in Division I. If the Lobos were to win, it would be the 12th consecutive season they will enter the post season with the #1 seed in their respective division. Longview closed off their home portion of the regular season with a dominating 48-10 victory over the Wildcats of Sulphur Springs, sending the ‘Cats to their 12th straight win and clinching their 15th straight post season appearance. The win also was Longview’s 34th consecutive home district victory. Hallsville made their statement last week with a clinching victory to return to the post season with a 58-24 win over Pine Tree at Pirate Stadium. It will be the Bobcats’ 6th playoff appearance in 11 years under current head coach David Plunk. Last season, the Bobcats came into Lobo Stadium needing a victory to clinch a playoff spot…and walked out with their season ending from a 42-28 loss (coupled with Marshall defeated Sulphur Springs by a certain amount). So while the game doesn’t have as much significance for Hallsville as it did last season, Longview must win to claim that top spot in D1 and to hold onto a spot for the district title, as both Texas High and Marshall are tied with the Lobos at 5-1 in district play.

ON THIS DATE IN LOBO HISTORY: November 6th

In 1925, Longview rolled all over Mount Pleasant with a 33-0 victory.

In 1931, the Lobos knocked off Kilgore 19-6 at Fair Park in Longview.

In 1953, the Panthers of Lufkin handed Longview a tough loss with a 14-13 victory at Panther Stadium in Lufkin.

In 1959, the Lobos held a 6-0 lead going into the 4th quarter against Texas High at Grim Park. Raymond Van changed that for Texarkana with a 9 yard run to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead. However, Ray Chancelor answered immediately and the Lobos walked out of the Border City with a 14-8 victory.

In 1964, the Lobos hung on strong for a 12-0 victory over Texarkana at Lobo Stadium.

In 1970, Jeb Blount kicked two field goals and James Lomax ran in from two yards out as the Lobos came from behind to knock off Texas High, 12-7, at Grim Park. The Tigers were ranked 10th in the state coming in before the upset victory by Longview.

In 1981, the Lobos grabbed a 10-6 lead midway through the 4th quarter on an 11 yard reception from Tony Kindle and looked poised to add to it driving to the John Tyler seven yard line. But disaster came and in an instant the Lobos lost all hope of a victory and a district title. A fumble by Gahlen Johnson on the Cujo 7 yard line gave JT the ball back only to be followed up by a 89 yard pass reception to Willie Walker. William Oliver added on with 20 seconds left from 5 yards out as the Lions knocked off Longview, 19-10.

In 1987, leading by only a point at halftime..the Lobos erupted for 27 points in the 2nd half behind two touchdowns each from Ray Allison and Mike Bobo in a 34-12 victory over Pine Tree at Pirate Stadium. The Lobos rolled up 356 yards rushing and 25 first downs in the victory.

In 1992, L’Vendric Fite scored from one yard out 4 seconds into the 4th quarter and Daydrion Taylor ended the night with a 21 yard interception return for the score in a 13-0 victory over Marshall. The win gave Longview it’s second straight district championship.

In 1998, Fred Talley scored four touchdowns and rolled up a school record 387 yards rushing to cap his Lobo career as the Lobos dominated Nacogdoches, 27-0, at Dragon Stadium. The 387 yards remains a Lobo record as the birthday boy that night capped the greatest (statistical) career any Lobo has ever had.

In 2003, Longview fumbles three times and threw two more interceptions as the #1 Lufkin Panthers held off the Lobos in a 14-0 victory at rainy Lobo Stadium. The 14-0 shut out was the last time the Lobos have been shut out. Jorvorskie Lane and Ashford Ayers scored the runs for the Pack in the victory.

Posted this on the 6A board but gonna post this here as well -

Look each district (with a Division I perspective)…

9-5A -
Frisco Wakeland has clinched the top spot. Frisco Centennial and the Colony face off for the final playoff spot. Winner takes the runner up spot in Division I. (There could be a weird 3 way tie in there but it’s highly unlikely)

10-5A -
Good luck trying to figure this one out cause I have absolutely no idea. Denison takes on Prosper and Wylie takes on McKinney North in the final week of the season…so a 3 way tie is very possible. I have no idea who gets in or what. All I know is if Denison or Prosper get in, Wylie East goes Division I.

11-5A -
Sealed and done. Creekview is the top spot, Neman Smith is the second spot.

12-5A -
Sales and done. Mesquite Poteet is the top spot, Rockwall Heath is the second spot.

13-5A -
Dallas Kimball already clinched the top spot, comes down to Dallas Samuell and Dallas Adamson for the 2nd spot. Adamson has South Oak Cliff to end the year while Samuell has Spruce. Spruce defeated Adamson earlier in the year, so most likely it’ll be Dallas Spruce in that second spot.

14-5A -
Tomorrow is D day in this district. Legacy takes on Timberview tomorrow. A win by Legacy would eliminate Timberview, while a win by Timberview would draw them into a tie with Hachie (who has the head to head on them). There is a chance that this could go to a big time three way tie if Timberview were to win, at 3-4, as Lancaster takes on Hachie to close the season…Legacy takes on Red Oak and Timberview takes on Summit. I have no idea who would go under that scenario. But yea, Legacy winning would just go a long way to seal things up.

15-5A -
Longview has the tiebreaker on Texas High and would clinch the top spot with a win at Hallsville or a Texas High loss at Mount Pleasant. Both clinched spots in Division I.

16-5A -
John Tyler has clinched with two games to play. Only way Lufkin doesn’t get in the post season is if they lose out, and Corsicana/Nacogdoches wins out. No idea how the point system would work but either way they’re most likely in. John Tyler wins tomorrow against Jacksonville, they’ll clinch the top spot in Division I. Lufkin win tomorrow, they’ll clinch a playoff berth.

Lobos should win handily IMHO......

Obviously PT isn't the best gauge.....but when I saw the Bobcats on Thursday, they looked like a completely different team than the one we played a month ago.

Looks like they have worked out their problems. O-line was very effective. If they can balance their running attack with a decent passing attack, they could keep it close.

Longview's defense is just so stinking fast..... hard to run against them. You better have a passing game to keep them honest, or they will crush you in the box.

Honestly....IMHO.... the margin of victory in this game for Longview will depend on this: are the Lobos going to cram the ball down the Bobcat's throat..... or are they going to try and pass the ball more than they should??? If they do the first, Lobos BIG. If they do the other, Lobos in a close one.

JMHO.
