It's a simple three-part formula that's almost impossible to replicate anywhere else.

1.) Nobody leaves. That's it. The kids who are playing for Tennyhaw now are the great-grandsons of former Tenaha standouts. Even though there's no real industrial-commercial infrastructure (which means most daddies have to work elsewhere), nobody throws a temper tantrum and decides to enroll their kid in the town next door. Or if they do, they're the rare exception.

2.) Community support. I'm sure Tenaha has occasional drama flare-ups, but everyone (for the most part) sees things as "us versus them" that is, Tenaha versus the world. They don't tear each other apart over football mama drama or booster club politics. Everyone toes the party line, or they get run outta town.

3.) Coaching. Head over to the Smoaky Historical Section and look at their head coach history. Pretty impressive. With only rare exception, Tenaha hires excellent ADs, who then acquire quality assistants. What does that mean? Money. Which means the school district (and by extension the community) supports investing in the program. (see #2) Look at that wicked bus they got. Nothing scandalous. They put it to a vote, and it passed easily. The people support their school, period.

When I look around at small-school programs who seem like they can never get their stuff together, it's always because of at least one of these three things. Some of the better ones are usually able to at least achieve two outta three. Tenaha does all three well. So long as they continue to do so, they'll continue to be one of the class programs of 2

Most schools go thru cycles...they just reload somehow.

We've had ups and downs.

The Jackson years were mostly ups. Mid-late 80s, other than a semi-final appearance in '87 weren't great, but mid 90s were outstanding. '01-'02 under Bickham was very good. The year and a half under Landrum was a disaster. Starting in '05, y'all have been on a roll.

As I've discovered since I've started following 2A - up and down years. Last years grad class only had 26 kids (13 boys I think). Only @ 4 played football & baseball. None in basketball. Knute Rockne couldn't have done a whole lot. But that gives Evadale 17 returning starters, so we're having a good year. We seem to excel in baseball here. The girls have done great for about 5 years. But there are cycles. But they can't spell cycle in Tenaha. As you said, just reload. Remind me of West Orange-Stark (and that's a Hugh compliment).

Everybody's 0-0 and every game matters. Can't overlook anyone. Here's our slate this week:

Grapeland (3-2) at Overton (3-2)

Tenaha (5-0) at Mount Enterprise (1-4)

Wortham (3-2) at Timpson (3-2)

Scores, predictions, smack talk?

This right here is killing high school sports. Wannabe specialization. Apparently the major leagues are scouring 1A schools for the next Tyrell Jenkins. [eyeroll]

I can remember having a 40-man varsity roster, with enough scrubs to keep a respectable JV year in and year out. Now, shoot... struggling to break 30 total. Plenty of talented athletes watching from the stands. "Focusing on another sport." I don't get it, I just don't get it. Why not go out for every sport? If you're working on an athletic scholarship in baseball, basketball, tennis, golf or whatever and you want to specialize, why stay at a 1A-2A school? Might as well transfer into the closest 4A+ and work on your game year-round.

Oh, and by the way... Tyrell played four sports throughout high school. Even ran track during baseball season. Got banged up during football season his senior year, rolled his ankle during basketball season. If you got it, you got it. No college wants a "hothouse flower" athlete.

What fascinated me the most was lack of participation by the boys in that class, in all sports. Usually, the majority of boys here will play 2 or 3 sports. May not be great athletes, but they participate. To me, that's the great thing about 2A, getting to play all the sports you want.

Can't wait for the start of district. One thing our coach holds back is a lot of the formations, and stuff that he's going to use in district play. No telling what you might see.

The game I ready to see is Joaquin vs Alto. Joaquin is the only good team Tenaha has played. If Joaquin wins, then Tenaha is the real deal. If Joaquin loses or gets blown out, and finish 3rd or 4th in there district. Then Tenaha has nothing to back anything up with.
