Marshall Football: Claude Mathis hired as AD/HFC

You have to have the Jimmy and Joe's along with the x's and o's. It's pretty simple, both can make each other look a whole lot better.

Exactly, either one by themselves can win you some games, but that's it. Great coaching can make little Jimmy and Joey look a heck of a lot better. And a team full of studs can make a decent coach look like Belichek. You put both together and you get something special.

And as far as D1 talent every year, that's not the case. Take this year for example.

Peyton Bickham (football), East Texas Baptist

James Ebarb (football), East Texas Baptist

Tanner Elliott (football), Tyler Junior College

Tre Gatlin (football), Navarro College

Nic Moore (football), Tyler Junior College

Austin Russell (football), Tyler Junior College

We might see some of these young men at a D1 university after JUCO, but Surratt lead this team to a state title without 1 D1 Senior on the team. In fact we have only had 1 young man sign a D1 LOI since 2014, and that was to UTSA last year. During those 3 years Carthage still has a 30-12 overall record and 11-2 record in the playoffs. Won 2 region 3 championships, and a state title. This would be in what can be considered a "down" time athlete wise over those 3 years. A great coach does not need D1 talent to have success. Now give a great coach D1 talent, and they will dominate.

That is not a logical argument. The JUCO kids would have went D1 if they got the job done in the classroom.

Also, you have the number 1 RB in the class of 2018.

Surratt is a great coach. Carthage has been blessed with great athletes and has a great set up as far as the district they are in and the opponents they match up with in the playoffs. Carthage as a whole is in a unique situation. That's most likely why Surratt hasn't left. He knows it would be hard to re create what they have in Carthage. Gilmer is another situation that's unique. It takes more than just great coaching or just athletes to go deep in the playoffs and have a chance at winning state year in and year out. Both of those places have great set ups all the way around.

Calling Surratt a "good" coach is a pretty big understatement. Before Surratt showed up Carthage would have a kid go D1 every 4-5 years. A couple kids would go to Kilgore or TJC every year. When you win, the recruiters will come. We have always had the same talent level at Carthage. These are the same kids we have always had. They are just coached up and fully bought into the program now. And as far as D1 talent every year, that's not the case. Take this year for example.

That's great and all, but Surratt isn't coming to Marshall, so let's let this topic live on in a different thread...

Saw where Hines committed to LSU. I was looking, and it looks like Marshall is gonna have an awesome o-line next year. Couple other potential D1 guys. That is a 1st year coaches dream. You can do alot of things when you win up front. Looks like that will be a huge strength for the Mavs next year. Definely going to make a coaches job alot easier on offense.

I bolded this out because he was committed to Wyoming forever. So he did have a D1 player on the team that was a senior.

Now back to the topic for me.

But could a Surratt disciple¿

I'd be okay with that if he has a plan in place that he can execute. It needs to start in 7th grade and finish at the varsity level.

I want someone who is more than a perceived winner. I want someone who made other guys winners. If this person help make Surratt a winner with some of his ideas and learned from Surratt in return, then he would be ideal.

Does anybody actually know the final 3 or just speculation? Seems like this one has been all over the place. This is one of the top 10 jobs in ETX, as far as football is concerned. I would think there was plenty of quality applicants. Hope Marshall gets their guy. ETX football as a whole is a heck of a lot better when Marshall is good.
