Marshall Football: Claude Mathis hired as AD/HFC

From what I understand..... 7th grade football will remain non-contact.

That seems to be the trend in district 16-5A as Marshall, Sulphur Springs, Texas High, and MP have all switched.

I had mixed feelings about this when it happened.....but we've won 2 district championships in 9th grade and one in 8th grade since the no-contact 7th grade started. Just focusing on technique from what I've been told.

I'll see what I can find out though.

Heard they may need a third 8th grade team because of numbers.... and possibly 2 full freshmen teams for next year. Sounds like we may be splitting the JV into 2 squads when available next year too.

7th grade football will be coming back, maybe not this fall but in 2018 for sure. Teze Hurd will not play qb, he will play wr & db this fall, he is drawing interest from several schools. I look for there to be a battle for qb from Herrington, Dekendrick Bender and JJ Green. The Mavs are spending a lot of time running 7on7 during their athletic period.7on7 was not taken seriously by Harper so these kids aren't very familiar with how competitive the sqt meets are. Mathis wants them to experience a sqt, not sure which one they will enter.

Some updates:

Highland Park coaches were very complimentary of the baseball facilities when they were in town over the weekend with the Playoff series.

Had one of the boosters say that a friend of theirs (HP parent) was amazed at the community support and size of the crowd Marshall had at the game. Stated no one in their district had anywhere near the support the Mavs have. Nice to receive compliments from a well respected program and their fans.

The new Marshall Junior High building is nearing completion. The athletic facilities for the school are outstanding. The gym is going to be fantastic..... Coach Mathis is putting in a top notch weight facility for the school that will be used by all sports. He's really investing into the Junior High program. LONG overdue. Sounds like the entire MJHS athletic program is getting a make-over and he's very involved with it. I'll post some pics of the new school/gym/athletic areas ASAP.

Have had several sources tell me that all of the 2015 bond projects ($110 Million) are coming in well under budget. With the surplus and the sell of the old properties..... this could leave somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million left over. Seems to be some debate where this money will go. With all new schools K-8..... most seem to be of consensus that it will all go to the renovation of MHS. The first bond included a $30 reno of MHS including new cafeteria, performing arts center, and classroom updates. Obviously 10M is a lot less than 30M..... so will be interesting to see what the school board does.

Maverick Stadium appears to be at the top of the list for Mathis, which also had a $5 million reno planned in the first bond. Press Box, concessions, and restrooms are his target. Will see if this is something the community will take care of much like they did the athletic center in 2005 without using tax money. Some have suggested that some of the surplus money can be used...other oppose that idea. Stay tuned.

Mavs will have 3 Jerseys this year..... red, grey, and black. Mixed thoughts on this. The new red ones are outstanding. The black ones from the last 2 years have grown on me somewhat. Haven't seen the grey....so I can't say. But hey....it's the trend these days and it seems to excite the players. And isn't this who this is all about?

Again I've heard about an explosion in numbers participating in football class. Mathis reported he's got more current 9th graders than he has 10th and 11th graders combined.... which is impressive considering those soph and junior classes are pretty big. May be record numbers for us dressing out.

A 7 on 7 schedule has not been announced, but it's going to happen. I've received different info from different people. I've been told the Tuesday night league with Evangel, Carthage, and Waskom is expected to continue. But I've also been told that Mathis has set up some 7 on 7 with Henderson as well. Also haven't been able to confirm SQT participation.... but rumor has it they will be in the Tyler tourney. Possibly Lufkin. I've heard rumor the ETBU 7 on 7 tourney in Marshall this year has been scratched since they are in the process of installing turf at Ornelas Stadium.

The new OC Jake Greidle (Lake Travis) will be in town Wednesday to meet the players.

TCU, U of Houston, and Texas A&M have been at practices taking a look at some guys.

Doesn't sound like many of Harper's staff will be sticking around. Several are headed to Texarkana from what has been talked about (Ludlow...hate to see that. He's a great coach). Hale and Sartain may be gone too.

Current DC Joslin may be staying, but he won't be DC. Scuttlebut has it that the new DC (not named yet) is currently at one of the Dallas ISD schools... but I've also heard the DC could be coming over from DeSoto after the state track meet. Conflicting reports....no idea which is true. Hope Joslin stays.... great coach and young smart guy. Heard 3 other defensive coaches will be coming to Marshall from DeSoto.

Several offensive coaches are expected to stay including Williams, Bird, and Cisneroz. Interesting fact..... the new OC (Greidle) is coming from Lake Travis.... which is where Bird played football with his dad (retired from Marshall after the 2015 season). So Bird and Greidle likely know each other and share some offensive knowledge from LT.

Since apparently this has become an issue in Nacogdoches.... it's been confirmed that head Mav baseball coach Dunaway and head Mav basketball coach Carson will only coach their sports. They won't be coaching additional sports.

Mathis is pushing for a hurry up offense. Wants to run 3 plays/min.

The WR corps is coming together nicely with plenty of reps.... and plenty of targets with varsity experience: Chandler Kelehan, Dekendrick Bender, Taj Washington, Seelah Smith, Marje Smith, Tre Macon, Cortez Herd....... that's 7 possible targets.... just in upperclassmen. Got some freshmen that have looked strong too.

Sounds like the QB position will be a battle over the summer with 7 on 7 and into drills. With two scrimmages in August... we should be in good shape.

Apparently......last year's starter Herrington has looked very good in practice. Looks like he's really put in a lot of work over the offseason. It may be his spot to lose. But sounds like he'll have some competition..... including the QB of last year's 9-1 district champion 9th grade team. Cortez Heard could also make a push for the QB slot. But Herrington has had an outstanding spring from what I've been told.

Looks like Mathis is planning on installing a 3-4 defense. Hard to say though until the DC gets to town. Lots of technique being taught in practice concerning blocking and tackling.... which has been a MAJOR problem for us the last few years. Our tackling has been atrocious at times.

Still hearing things about an indoor practice facility.....but only from 1-2 people. Not sure this rumor even has legs.... or if this is just wishful thinking for some. But that's how all the talk about the video board got started too.... soooo.... we shall see.

Sorry for the long post. But wanted to catch up everyone on the mix of fact/fiction/rumor/small town life. Sounds like there is a TON of excitement around town.

More to come later.

GO MAVS GO

That pretty much covered it all for me lol you've been clutch since Etsupersite man, Its an exciting time to be a Maverick

Harper had put together a fantastic staff while he was here. I wish them all the best.

But Mathis....wowzers. He's putting together a beast staff. Sounds like he needs it too. Numbers are up ridiculously from what it seems.

Getting guys from Lake Travis and DeSoto to come out to the woods. So he's bringing in pedigree.

I'm ready for us to climb back to the top of the mountain. Harper did a lot of ground work to rebuild the program.... he left us in good shape. Mathis seems to be all business and determined to succeed.

Thank you sir!

Working on a huge historical section. Hope to have it completed in time for the season.

all time stat leaders

memorable games (from winning and losing teams)

Players that went on to great things

best teams

Really want to dig deep on the 1926 and 1928 semifinalist teams.....obviously because so few people alive know anything about them. Of course the 88 (Dallas Carter quarterfinals) and 89 (semifinalists Vs. Permian), 90 (Champs- Vs. Converse Judson )teams.

Several of the 90's teams..... and of course the 2004 and 2005 state runner up teams.

Several other teams (quarters and region semis).

Even some of the losing teams had some fantastic games and storylines.

Work in progress.

If I recall correctly..... they were state ranked in week 10..... but the loss to Lufkin put them at risk......

then a Saturday afternoon freak upset Lee had of JT made them sit at home.

That was the year we beat the #1 team in the state on a Saturday day game, beat Monroe Ouachita who was #1 in 5A Louisiana, barely lost to Evangel the #1 team in Louisiana 1A, then beat #1 Longview, beat state ranked JT, lost to Lee and Lufkin on a missed TD to Starling in the end zone finishing us at 3-2 in district and missing the playoffs.

Are you calling the JT win over Lee in 98 an upset? That definitely was not an upset.

Marshall ISD Athletic Director/Head Football Coach Claude Mathis has officially hired his chief offensive, defensive and special teams assistant coaches with the additions of Jake Griedl, Jarry Poth and Brent Pradia to the Maverick coaching staff Monday evening.

The three assistants were approved by the MISD school board during the boards regular May meeting, completing a trio of significant hires for Mathis as he builds his first coaching staff since being named the Mavs head coach in late March.

Griedl will assume the role of Offensive Coordinator for the Mavs after four seasons as an assistant coach at defending Class 6A state champion Lake Travis High School. Griedl, who coached wide receivers and was Strength and Conditioning Coordinator with the Cavaliers. During his four years on staff, Lake Travis won two state championships, with three trips to the state semifinals. Prior to his time at Lake Travis, Griedl coached one season at Boerne High School after one year coaching receives at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Ark.

A Houston native, Griedl attended and played football at TAPPS Tomball Concordia Lutheran High School and continued his playing career at Concordia University-Nebraska, where he was a three-year starter at slot receiver. He earned his undergraduate degree in History and is currently working on a masters degree in Kinesiology.

Jake and his wife, Garland, were married in May 2016.

Jarry Poth will join the Mavs staff as Defensive Coordinator. A coaching veteran of 19 years, Poth comes to Marshall after two years as defensive coordinator at Somerset High School, where the Bulldogs were a regional semifinalist and two-time district and bi-district champion. It was Poths second tour of duty as Defensive Coordinator at Somerset, as he spent 2006-2012 as Defensive Coordinator that included a regional final appearance in 2010.

Poth spent the 2012-2015 seasons in the college ranks, first at Sul Ross State University and then at Oklahoma Panhandle State. At Oklahoma Panhandle, Poth was the coordinator of a defense that ranked No. 4 in the county in total defense and No. 1 in the nation in pass efficiency in NCAA Division II.

Poth began his career at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, where as Defensive Coordinator his teams made three state championship appearances. He also coached at William B. Travis High School from 2000-2003.

Jarry and his wife, Melissa, have been married for 18 years and have five children: Katie (17), Ryan (14), Megan (11), Ava (5) and Conner (2).

Pradia brings 13 years of coaching experience to Marshall and will serve as the Mavs Special Teams Coordinator and will also coach safeties on defense. He comes to the Mavs from Del Rio High School, where he served as Special Teams Coordinator and Safeties Coach on a Rams team that won the District 29-6A championship and finished the season at 10-2.

Prior to Del Rio, Pradias other high school coaching stop was at Mesquite High School from 2011-2014, where he helped coach the Skeeters to three straight playoff berths. During that span, Mesquite won a district, bi-district and area championship along with an undefeated regular season in 2012.

Pradia also has nine seasons of experience in the college ranks, with stops at Wayne State, Peru State, University of St. Thomas, Dodge City, Fort Scott Community college and Alabama A&M.

Pradia holds a bachelors degree in Engineering in 1994 from Kansas Wesleyan and a masters in Sports Management from Wayne State. Along with his football duties at Marshall, Pradia will also serve as the Mavs Head Boys Track Coach.

Brent and his wife, Naomi, have two children: Brent II and Nyla.

The Mavs are scheduled to open the season on Sept. 1, hosting Tyler Lee in Maverick Stadium.

Sounds like Mathis has brought in not only some pedigree.... but a some experience too.

The new OC is coming from one of the most successful programs in the state of Texas. He may not have been doing it that long.... but to already have a couple of championship rings and other deeps runs makes a difference. Not to mention he's coming from a team that's known for it's offensive fire power.

He wants to start teaching the same offense at the lower levels so that by the time they are getting to varsity.... it's all memorized. THIS is something we've sorely missed since the Bill Harper days. SAME OFFENSE 7-12. Glad to hear it.

The DC is coming to town with a TON of experience. Good news. He's no stranger to Marshall... having worked at SRSU.... he was in Marshall to play ETBU for football. He must have liked what he saw when he was here. Sounds like he's had some stout defenses through the years. Sounds excellent.

Bringing in a special teams coach is huge. We have REALLY struggled in this department for a while And coming from Mesquite is nice.... that's pedigree again. Not LT pedigree, but Mesquite has had some good years. Maybe he can shore up some of our issues.

Can we ever have a kicker again? Someone that can boom a kickoff through the endzone? I absolutely HATE pooch kicks that GIVES a third of the field up to the opposing team. We've done it forever..... through several coaches (Harper, Harris, Southern). Hell... I remember Bill Harper doing it too.

I don't want to be greedy...but a consistent PAT kicker would be great too.

Not even going to be selfish and ask if a FG could actually become an offensive threat.

Mathis putting together a good staff.

Exciting times.

I know Coach Poth well, he's one of my favorites..probably should already be a HC at this point with his pedigree...I know he was up for a couple of openings in San Antonio this year....worked with him some while he was at Sul Ross as I helped with a 7on7 SQT in Alpine....

I am 99.9% sure Marshall will be playing in the Tyler 7on7 Tournament June 17......first chance to see the new look Mavs compete against outside competition in a somewhat meaningful setting...

One Mathis long time coaching buddies will be his asst head coach, Donald Miller from Desoto. He & Mathis were roommates at SWT ( now Texas State ). He will also coach the dline. He is also a heck of a track coach. He's staff is coming together. Mathis had all football players 7th thru 11th parents come to a meeting last night at the high school. The place was packed. Mathis covered a lot topics. The excitement continues to build in Marshall.

With all the old schools closing and new schools opening in the Fall.....I have a feeling MISD is going to focus all efforts on the proposed renovations at MHS.

Another bond?

Loans?

Pay for with surplus?

I hope they can find the money for Maverick Stadium too. I know they had proposed 5.5 Million in stadium renovations in 2013. The new turf looks great.... the new scoreboard is amazing.... but the stadium needs a lot of work.

new lights

new concessions

new restrooms

new bleachers

new pressbox

new ticket booths

new fencing and gates

pay now or pay later...... don't want to end up in a situation like some other schools in the region (Carthage, MP, Henderson). Will end up being much more expensive.

BTW....if the proposals to the main MHS campus go through...wowzers. MISD may have some of the best facilities K-12 in the region. Long overdue too.
