State Championship Games at Jerryworld

I've attended pro and HS games at both AT&T and NRG.

There is no comparison between the two to be sure..... but NRG should ABSOLUTELY be in rotation with AT&T (and the Alamodome for that matter).

If NRG is good enough for the Houston Texans and a bowl game.... it's good enough for ANY high school team.

After the reno.... The Alamodome may be a better venue than NRG..... but even still..... Houston should be in the rotation.

TBH..... Houston got a raw deal the year they hosted with several "new" schools that landed in the finals like Frisco Lone Star and (not sure?) Mansfield Lake Ridge.  These new schools don't have tons of alum like a Katy or an Allen or a Converse Judson.  Those older schools that are traditional powers have GENERATIONS of fans to draw from.  Some of these new schools have less than a decade of alum to draw from.

It hurt attendance that season no doubt having all those newer schools.  Houston didn't get lucky with a ton of big draw schools like it seems like Dallas has been blessed with.

But the Alamodome should DEFINITELY be in the coversation with the renovations.  It's an NFL caliber stadium now.  And if it's good enough for the Alamo Bowl and MULTIPLE Final Four championships.... it's good enough for Pleasant Grove and Longview.

Same with NRG.

Couldn't disagree more.  None of them "deserve" to play at any particular location and/or be on TV.  It's a wonderful thing that 6-man is even on the Fox App, but like it or not, there just aren't that many people going to tune in to it, if there were, they would be on TV.

Okay, we can disagree, but I never mentioned TV.  I understand Fox making money, but I do think the small schools should get to play in the venue with everyone else, regardless of TV or not.  I’ve seen some some 5A teams with very little crowd support.  No doubt the UIL would love to fill the stadium, but teams don’t get to play there because of fan base.  It’s the State Championship venue, so let the small teams play.  They earned it.  Jmo.

Should rotate.

NRG is good enough for pro football but somehow idiots think it isn't good enough for a HS game?

Yea okay.

I don’t think it’s an issue about the quality of the stadium. I have yet to visit NRG or AT&T, so all I have to go on is what I read here on SDC. The year it was held at NRG, I remember hearing from folks from multiple different schools about how the stadium staff seemed totally oblivious to the magnitude of the event, and  less than half the concession stands were open. It simply appeared that AT&T works hard at putting on a better event. I do understand that the year NRG had it, many of the schools involved were “new” programs that don’t bring the crowds that teams like Katy and Lake Travis do. If the Alamodome has upgraded and added locker rooms to accommodate multiple games, then give them a shot at it.

Allen vs Duncanville drew nearly 28k fans. Katy vs Northshore drew 13k. I would love to see it rotated but there is no doubt that Jerry loves high school football and has built something special  with the UIL. No one puts on a show like AT&T. The Alamodome would also be a great venue because they can host events outside the stadium. Downtown San Antonio is a great place to spend a weekend.

AT&T is awesome....Mr. Jones does a great job in putting on the games....but remember that the most important thing is that high school athletes are playing for a state championship and the metroplex schools do get an advantage when the game is played in their neighborhood every year...bigger fan base...less travel...more fans plus a lot of the top 5A-6A schools in the area play there either in playoff games or pre-season games.  There is some advantage to playing in a place with which you are familiar.  If the sites were rotated to the other domed stadiums then the Gulf Coast and San Antonio schools would at least have the same opportunities that Metroplex schools get every year.  I don't know that there is a solution for the far west and panhandle schools...nothing out that way with a roof.

Those games are televised.

On Fox Sports SW Or Fox Sports One, and not everyone gets that package.

And real fans want to be at the game. And, players like to see bigger crowds there supporting them.

I'll say it again: It's not fair that the smaller classification teams have to play on Wed/Thu/early Fri, because fans can't get to the games and because kids have to miss school.

I agree regarding Wednesdays.  That's a garbage day to play a HS game.

But, the attendance numbers would say otherwise regarding Thu & Fri.  It's certainly a tradeoff between having all teams being able to play on Fri or Sat; or having the one venue where fans can go and see it ALL!  For me, it's worth the tradeoff and I know that it's coming, so I plan ahead and request the vacation days so I can be there.  Tens of thousands of others do the same each year.  So yeah, it's a tradeoff that doesn't work for some, but the big picture says it's working.

NRG did NOT make the effort in 2015 to make it a great experience for ALL of those involved.

It was not a fan friendly or media friendly experience and from what I was told, it was not near as enjoyable for the players or coaches either.

Also, Texas Live between the current Rangers ballpark and Jerry World makes the championship games being at AT&T that much better.

People griping about the 6 man and 2A teams having to play on Wednesday..that’s just something very little can be done about unless you back up their seasons by one week so those title games can be played the Friday and Saturday before the 3A and above schools play the next week. There’s just nothing that can change it if you want all of them to be at one stadium, the greatest sports arena in the world.

Well, trust me. its not working for a lot of fans. I've been having this discussion with fans from Cameron to Mineola and lots of other small towns for a few years. Our own former 1st team All-State QB lives right in Dallas and I think only managed to get off work for one of the title games we played there.

Cowboy stadium is the best there is and Arlington is a great location. It's the best thing, or they wouldn't be doing it! It's just terribly expensive to attend! You can't ever expect it to be filled up! Houston is just down and out of the way. San Antonio is just too far down, in my opinion. It's easy in and easy out. I have never had a problem navigating the roads around the stadium for the high school venues. Not one bad experience. It's not about being fair. It's about being the best. It just makes sense! Let's cherish that, because not much else does make sense anymore.

Life just gets in the way sometimes. There is no perfect answer that would accommodate everyone. Being from Daingerfield and going to our playoff games since 1966 we played in the Dallas  FW area numerous times. History has proven that no area comes out to High School football games that they have no school involved like the DFW area. Compound that with all the football crazies within 150 miles you have a large pool to draw from for this location. We will drive 150 but not 250 or 400..

The fact that people say "It's not about being fair" pretty much says what you need to know.

Life isn't fair. And a lot of people in this nation these days are abusing the heck out of the idea that it should be. But in this particular case, we could at least take a serious look at doing better.

As they're slowly winding down, what do you think would make the state championship games more enjoyable for fans to watch it?

My suggestion, if it stays at Jerry World, is to allow the sale of alcohol.

Ha! That would certainly make Arlington police departments weekend a lot busier

Not going to happen and absolutely shouldn't happen.

Somehow/someway - have certain sections reserved for the fans of each team.......the bigger the school, the more sections reserved........you have to have a certain color/type ticket to sit in those sections........ if caught sitting there without the specific ticket, you are escorted out and have to pay again to get back inside.

I like to go watch all the games, and I know there are others who do that.  Setting aside the fact that this would never work, it's also not fair for those who paid the price of admission which is good all day, and showed up early to get a good seat.  I cant speak for everyone else who does this, but while I might not be wearing your school colors, I'm a fan of whatever team whose fans I am sitting among for that game.  You should be happy to have the added support and noise.  And even if I wasnt cheering for your team and just enjoying a state championship football game, if you're gonna kick me out of my seat for not being from your town, you might as well kick out people who are from your town who dont cheer loud enough and aren't paying attention or are wearing the wrong colors.  What's the difference?
