I know y’all are very proud and I am, too, as a Cherokee County native born at Nan Travis! Lol I hope we get to play there again sometime. So glad they didn’t tear it all down and build new. The Yellowjackets (11-0) whipped the Wildcats, 62-0, in a Class 2A, Division I, Region III bi-district contest. Alto advances to play the winner of the Joaquin-Shelbyville game, which will take place on Friday evening, in the Area round late next week. Vi'Dareous High had a night to remember for the Mean Sting. High scored touchdowns on five of his eight carries and wound up as the game's leading rusher, carrying eight times for 209 yards. His night ended early following his final score, which came on the first play from scrimmage in the second half when he found a huge hole that was opened up by the Jacket offensive line and proceeded to run 67 yards, right through the heart of the Cayuga defense, for a touchdown, which made the score 40-0. Julio Serrano, who made good on six of seven point after touchdown tries on the cold and damp evening, delivered a successful kick, giving the Mean Sting a 41-0 advantage with practically a full half of football yet to be played. On Alto's opening possession in the game High ran around the right side for a 61-yard scoring trek that put the Mean Sting on the scoreboard with 9:41 to play in the first period. Aaron Skinner, who also had a big night for Alto, found the end zone for the first time on the Yellowjackets' first play from scrimmage in their second possession when he zoomed up the middle for a 63-yard touchdown. Alto increased its lead to 20-0 with 3:30 left in the first quarter after High ran in from 36 yards. Following the score, Jacket lineman Josh Castillo yelled out from along the sideline,”we built different,” in describing Alto's physical dominance over the Wildcats (4-7), who came in fourth place in District 9-2A-I. That assessment was spot on as the Mean Sting were far superior in speed and size to Cayuga. The Jackets needed just five plays to complete the 72-yard scoring march, which was fueled by a 21-yard pass from Harmon West to Todd Duplichain. Alto closed out the first half by scoring on two of its last three possession — the Mean Sting were driving when time ran out in the half on the Jackets' final possession. High raced to pay dirt from 14 and 2 yards out to account for the Alto scores. Skinner, who carried 14 times for 154 yards, chalked up his second touchdown with 5:49 to go in the third stanza when he displayed a good second effort to score from 22 yards out. Following the PAT, Alto stretched its lead to 48-0. With 8:55 left in the game, Skylar Atkins capped off a two-play mini march by breezing in for a 23-yard touchdown. On the first play of the drive quarterback Will Dixon connected with Taylor Bowman for a 57-yard reception. The final points of the evening were scored when freshman Carter Pursley traveled 6 yards for a touchdown with 2:25 left to play. Alto amassed 510 yards rushing and 149 through the air for a total of 659 yards. The Yellowjacket defense held the Wildcats to minus two yards rushing and five passing for a total of three yards. Jay Pope and Cayle Irvin had pass interceptions in the first half for Alto. This is a statement. I don’t care what team you play that’s a heck of a stat. To hold to 3 yards of total offense is unreal. You can win a lot of games when you have defensive stops like that.
